This song's guitar riff sounds like PowerStation because PowerStation covered "Get It On (Bang A Gong)" and this song uses a lot of the same melodic guitar riffs as that song.

I still don’t get the “rock”? I hear guitar when I make myself, but am I missing something? Does guitar make it rock? Everything else is just more dominant to me. I have to admit, I am horrible at “not hearing” the electric guitar, especially in Duran…it’s why the “guitarist debate” doesn’t phase me much musically. Personally, I have different thoughts, and it’s an old argument, so that’s a moot point. Being on the Spectrum, certain sounds bug me & I’ve learned to tune them out or process them differently. I tend to focus on the bass or the synths & the guitar just disappears without even realizing I’m doing it. Throughout your reactions, I’ve tried to pay more attention, but old habits…

I like the tune.. it’s cool but not amazing however I have always felt like it was a precursor to Meddazaland which I believed you mentioned.

Happy to help the journey Matt. These are the songs which showcase how nuanced Warren's guitar playing is. There are so many great accent pieces in addition to the rock stuff. It also occurred to me to mention, in regards to musing over their lyrics, that Simon has said that as a general rule (not always) he tends to avoid writing about anything that could be considered party politics. He prefers to concentrate on personal politics between people or things that have affected the band and occasionally more broadly social issues. Notably songs like the title track from Paper Gods (social commentary on society's idolising of the notes in your wallet - the Paper Gods).

this is a mess!! too many musical ideas squished into one pop song.lyrically.....well, let's just say it is horrible, poetically and thematically. just like certain Bond movies....not aging good.

"Read my Lips" ...not one of my favorites from this album.

I haven't heard this since the album's release, so since 1990 and I still don't like this. Elements of the sonics ok but it sounds like a rejected INXS track. Overproduction of the album was it's biggest failing and this is a perfect example of that.
I know DD like to sound different with each release but if you imagine waiting a few years after Big Thing and all the experimental avenues they went to , none seemed to lead to this album's sonics.
In the charts we had fantastic innovation from bands like Soul II Soul, Depeche Mode created Violator ... Duran sounded behind everything around them rather than moving forward.

I do remember you saying about the album more generally that it felt like an attempt to do an INXS record. And that's a fair critique. Obviously as a more recent enthusiast of the group, I'm seeing their long catalog in a "compressed" way, but it is interesting for me to think about how longtime fans have interacted with each album upon release.
On that note, I do find it wonderful that most Duran fans who comment here seemed to have really enjoyed Future Past. I certainly did!

@@mattsnider2667 Future Past is an example of when they get the balance of new experimental sonics and their signature sound just right
