- 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 review by The Straight Pipes. The 2022 IONIQ5 is putting down 320 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque from a 77 kWh battery and 2 electric motors. At $62,824 CAD, would you take it over the Model Y, BOLT EUV, KIA EV6, VW ID 4 or the Mustang MACH E?

@TheStraightPipes Review the EV6
All I can say is, wait for the Audi EV if cool tail and headlights get ya.
I'm that guy at the Flo station! You guys are awesome! Thanks for the mention!
All fair points by you guys regarding charging infrastructure. I will say though, despite the occasional issue I've had with the 10% of non-home charges, I'm absolutely certain the savings have been worth it. For me, I was paying $1000/month due to my commute. So I'd say it's very much dependant on personal requirements.
PS - my wife and I love you guys now! Subbed and followed on IG!
Great meeting you! Thanks
Send me a message I wanna buy your ioniq @yuritereshyn
josh when you say battery degradation...what you talking about here? is it a fault ? or just the way it is ?
@@TheStraightPipes TrueCar for pricing 🤪
@@deadkemper I drive about 110 km each way basically half the days of the year. When temperatures get extremely cold in Canada, I get a fast charge so I don't get stranded. These two things aren't exactly great for maintaining a strong battery. Particularly when that battery isn't liquid cooled.
I haven't lost a ton of range (maybe 10% max), but it has been enough to be noticeable at times.
It's important to note that part of this is circumstance. We could not longer afford gas and needed to find something more economical. We were limited in choice due to the extremely high pricing of EVs at the time we bought. Maybe we would have got the Kona if we had the choice, but honestly, I think things will work out best for us this way, since EV innovations have improved so rapidly.
BTW, one of the main reasons that the Ioniq 5 doesn't have a bigger frunk is because the wheels are pushed further out than other EVs so you get more space in the cabin. I'll take that trade off any day of the week
Totally agree that it's the design of the year. Such a cool looking machine! If it was actually hatchback size rather than SUV size, it'd be even cooler (to me). Also, props to you guys for sharing the truth about the problems with the charging infrastructure in this province.
They sell those Kona
Really agree that this is a good looking car. Although, I just saw my first Kia EV6 in person, thought it looked really good. I think I like that slightly more from a design perspective.
Ioniq 3 ;)
It isn’t an SUV. Actually shorter than you think so it s a hatchback with a tall roof
I love hatchbacks, but I like the taller sitting position of Hyundai. I had a Subaru WRX and now a Fiat 500. The taller sitting of the Fiat 500 makes it less hassle to get into or out of the car. Smaller cars are lighter and more fun so yeah, this car is big.
This and EV6 are design of the year. Kia/Hyundai are absolutely killing it with their design.
I've never wanted a Kia / Hyundai so much.
Depends on the beholder. I honestly think the new Tuscon is hideous and looks like a newer 2007 Ford Edge.
For real I would never in my life buy a Honda Ridgeline but I love the Santa Cruz
Imo their Palisade is the best looking SUV out there.
I don't like the exterior look but I do like the massage seats!
The car of the Year!
One of the only EVs I’m considering at the moment if I had to upgrade.
This is coming someone who before used to say I would never be caught driving a Hyundai in my lifetime. But it feels like they are FINALLY understanding what the customers want and like.
Hyundai's are still very well built. Less quality issues than teslas. My 2017 Ioniq has been perfect from day 1. Yes, it feels cheap on the inside but it's very reliable. And cheap to own too.
I'd ride a bike first. Hard pass.
You're a few years late to the party
I saw one on the road the other day and you guys are right, this car is massive compared to what I thought it would be size wise after seeing the concept and final design photos. I also love the fact that this car looks like something a kid would've drawn back in the 80s if someone handed them a pen and a piece of paper and said "hey kid, draw a car from 2022".
Saw one of these driving in person last night and it looks really cool. Definitely bigger than pictures would have you think, but not as big as some reviewers say it is. Has a pretty cool road presence.
Tell us your electric car charging experiences below!
My Genesis Gv60 will be wirelessly charged in Korea later.
When I eventually but an EV (hopefully around this time next year or sooner), I will predominantly charge at home.
@@snakeeyes9246 - you’ll need to have one on order within the next 6 months if you want one a year from now.
In Quebec, charging infrastructure works just fine, at least in Quebec city
I have to agree somewhat with charging infrastructure in Ontario - I have an e-Golf and the car is FANTASTIC but the battery is small (35kwH). To go any trips longer than 2 hours, I need to charge on the road. I have had experiences where the chargers don't work (or are broken). Support on these chargers is bad at best - the person on the other end doesn't care. If a station is broken, it can be down for a year. Most of the stations installed by the government at Tims and Scotiabank have never worked. I have 5 accounts Flo, Electrify Canada, Chargepoint, Ivy, Greenlots - all with money on them that you can't exactly bring down to $0. Why we can't just swipe a credit card is way beyond me - that should be legislated. (to be fair, you can consolidate Flo and ChargePoint ...and possibly more... on one card - they allow roaming). Flo is the best by far - especially the units installed at Canadian Tire locations.
The home install of a L2 is well worth the expense and effort (especially with gas prices where they are at now, you will get the return on investment). Home chargers are robust and always work. The cars, especially G1 where they are the same car as the ICE equivalents have STUPID features like fuel doors that lock!!! and freeze up in the winter so you have to spend a few minutes chipping out all the ice before you are able to use a charger at all.
I think we're getting better - Niagara has more than one fast charger now (the area between Stoney Creek and Niagara Falls used to have little infrastructure and the QEW in that stretch really sucks battery for some reason...probably speed :) Still nowhere nearly on par with Tesla - which will be my next EV for sure.
My wife and I just saw one of these yesterday. It's wild that this is like the 3ed EV I've seen on the road and then 3 days later see reviews of.
The designer of this car certainly deserves an award..It looks classy, yet modern..that's a rare combination..🥰😍🥰😍
I think it has a futuristic/throwback look to it. It looks like if a delorean was produced in 2022.
@@TheNegrodamus89 yeah that’s what i was thinking, it’s like if they pulled a mitsubishi and brought back the delorean but made it a cross over

Awesome review guys! Please keep up the focus on practicality as new cars today seem to lean too much more on form than function. Cool PID control shoutout as well!
Thank you for the honest review! Everyone is praising this car as if it’s gonna take over the world but this review really shows what’s wrong with it and hopefully these problems will be fixed fast !
Certainly the attitude of the dealer I visited. Kind of pathetic. No effort, these things sells themselves. Well, not for me.
I love the simplicity in the design both inside and out
Simple and clean
@@DEEBOYGR8 but not TOO clean like in tesla..
@@salemas5 tesla is too simple… it’s boring
Was pretty blown away when I first saw this from a company I never looked twice at. Such a cute little stunner!
No frunk because they extended the wheelbase with flat floor by pushing everything under the hood. Not a bad compromise imo.
the frunk is smaller on the AWD model, but at least it's there. on the Marvel R performance there's no frunk at all compared to the non AWD version (called luxury here for 2WD).
This is pretty close to the ideal electric car. No rear wiper is a bit criminal. I'm keen on the Kia EV6 version, possibly the GT version, depending on price of course. Two dollars per liter gas here in Canada starts that conversation.
Kia is ugly 🤨
I loved both when I test drove them, but my issue with the kia was second row head room. Not really that big a deal for most people but my family is slightly above average height and I don't wanna hear them complain any time I hit a bump😂
The EV6 also doesn’t have rear wiper, unfortunately.
But a 50k electric car ends that conversation. Never understood people who try to justify an electric car to save 20 bucks a week (if that) on gas. Buy it if you like it but as a money saving proposition, its ridiculous.
@@MarTin-ku4lx True - but due to its design it guides the air differently compared to the Ionic5 resulting in a rather dry and clean rear window
Saw this on the road yesterday. It's huge! It looked almost like a hatchback minivan
Videos just get better and better, hope you guys get a chance to do some of the new Mini JCW’s this spring/summer! Fan from NJ
Great review guys! Completely agree I think it’s one of the best looking cars of the year, and I hope for 2023 they make some of the adjustments and improvements that you mentioned including the rear view wiper. The Canadian charging network needs a serious improvement plan over the next couple years to accommodate for the influx of electric cars that are coming on the roads. I personally like Lucid Blue but colour is always personal preference :)
I love the fact that this is the only channel that takes adaptive cruise control seriously cuz it really matters i would choose between a GLE or X5 if one has a better adaptive cruise and better lane centering
❤️ adaptive cruise is life
This car takes it for its futuristic looks. I saw one last week and had to do a double-take. Knew right there, it was going to get raved about. Nice car....The future really looks bright.
Always loving you guys reviews! I can feel your passions and I watched your videos with smile all the time!
Totally agree with the seat situation. Test drove it and found the seats very firm. I’m coming from a Lincoln so I do have some expectations for seat comfort.
The design of this looks especially great in that color! I bet Hyundai could pull off a Ioniq Delorean.
WELL… this aged perfectly
As a daily Uber driver with an electric car. If you have a 100+amp panel in your home you can easily install a 7-11kwh wall unit or just a 14-50 NEMA outlet to use for your vehicle which can fully charge a car within 4-6 hours depending on the vehicle. Installing something like that at home is probably $1000 more or less depending on multiple factors of course.
Then 90-95% of general car owners will only charge at home like you mentioned and makes things very convenient and the rare occasion you need to use a charger on your road trip it is the wild wild west because stations and the infrastructure that we have is so unreliable and behind the rest of the world which I hope changes soon.
Most people use an app called plug share just to see all the chargers on your map and at some point many gas stations, on route will have chargers, Tesla charging stations will open up to all vehicles you just need an adapter and account so things will improve it is just taking a very long time
This is a great review for a car un-enthusiast like me. lol Thank you! Totally one of the best, most thorough car reviews I have ever watched. Great job1

lol loved your EV6 climate control reaction, Yuri 😂
It's amazing that charging is STILL such a problem for non-Teslas. I don't understand how they can screw something up which may at most as far as moving parts goes, has a pump and a fan. Insane.
The problem is independence of the charging network right? Unlike Tesla, which has their own proprietary system, other brands all share electric charge stations with different standards. I think it will get better once the companies can agree on a single system.
@@rnjsghlckd Except the problem isn't with the system - everyone except Tesla has already standardized on CCS. The problem is that the charging networks can't figure out user-friendly payment methods and they can't be bothered to maintain their infrastructure. There is no excuse for those sorts of really basic failures, and the fact that they are so widespread is because outside of Tesla, EV charging is an industry largely propped up by the government. The government will pay the subsidy whether or not the charger actually work, so why bother?
@@ARCNA442 True
@@ARCNA442 To my understanding, there are some differences between countries. However, you are correct that CCS has, for the most part, been standardized in respective regions/nations (more or less). But, my question is with the hardware. I don't contest that there are issues with the payment system, but I wonder how many problems arise with different hardware standards between companies such as BMS. Since the charging of a battery depends on many factors (temperature, voltage, and current), I wonder to what degree has this become an issue?
It is interesting to note that both the Electrify and Petrocan chargers appear to be the same model.
Been watching @thestraightPipes video for while - love your work.
Ioniq 5 owner here since January and there are couples of things I don't agree with.
- the seats are actually pretty comfortable and I'm a slimmer guy
- Head up display is only on the highest trim
- the majority of people (if not 95%) who bought an EV will invest in a Level 2 charger at home. so the statement that they would only slow charge outside isn't a good statement. I don't recall the % but it's like a lot charging outside vs at home. Plus when you're asleep why not charge it at home?
- The rear wipers is not a big deal, just put Aquapel or Rain-X and you're fine (I drive MTL-TO, so if anything it would affect me but it doesn't)
- Agree with the capacitative touch button but not a super deal breaker
Saw one at Walmart yesterday. I will give it to them, at least they have it looking futuristic for being an electric car. Finally the future movie cars are arriving.
Thank you for this one. I was waiting for it
I love the looks of the Ionic5, but the EV6 has some available features that I think are mandatory for me.
Like what?
Also, I may not be in my right mind, but I keep my Stinger GT's nav up to date and do use it. In Atlanta, at least, I can get traffic data via HD radio, so I can see traffic and slow downs. I can navigate around it. I love having the navigation directions in the heads up display. For me, that beats using a map app in Carplay. If Kia had better voice commands and POI search, I'd probably never use Carplay for navigation.
@TheStraightPipes Well, for one, the EV6 has a moonroof that can be open and not fixed like in the IONIQ 5 and other EVs. Btw, can you guys address this stupid trend of EVs only have a fixed glassroof? All the automakers seem to be into it lately.
Like a rearview wiper?
@@TheStraightPipes Off the top of my head, I can think of 3 or 4, but I watched an in depth comparison of the two and came away pretty convinced that the EV6 met my needs better. As noted by Gerard, the sunroof that actually opens is big, for me. Even though the Ioniq 5 has a slightly larger storage area, I think the Kia's is a bit more usable because of the difference in shape. Physical buttons on the Kia for things that are only in the touch screen menus in the Hyundai. To the best of my knowledge, Hyundai hasn't announced N variant. Coming from a Stinger GT2, I'm more likely to buy a eGT or whatever they end up calling it. While not a feature, per se, I really prefer the more driver centric cockpit and controls for the Kia. I prefer their shifter. I prefer the tuning knob to the tuning flap. :)
Non Tesla charging in the US sucks too. My wife drove to L.A. from Seattle. More chargers were broken on the drive than where working. It’s infuriating. I love my ev but if it’s not a Tesla the charging sucks.

I usually don't use the charging stations but two weeks ago I went from Montreal to Toronto with my Kona ev and the charging experience was horrible as most stations were broken and the ones that weren't were already occupied. Really shocked how garbage the infrastructure is for non Tesla chargers
It's like 18-35k 🇨🇦$ cheaper then the model Y. With the tesla you don't even get the government rebate. The only problem is they don't have any in stock for 2022.
With any version higher than base you don't technically qualify for the current rebate which is set at 45,000. Mine is on order and is right at 61k ish, but hyundai canada is giving you the 5,000$ regardless at this time. Who knows how long that'll last.
@@CebsJr from what I'm understanding as long as the base model is lower then 45k$ all the trims will get the rebate. It's the same with the EV6.

This is the best looking EV on the planet 👌 Hands down
Nice review guys. I have a MY on order and am considering buying an Ionic 5 off a dealer's lot instead. Ironically your comment at 19:17 about setting regen is one of the things I prefer about the I5 over the MY. MY no longer allows you to turn regen on/off - it's set permanently on. Since I still own other ICE vehicles, I don't really want to get used to 1-pedal driving in the EV and end up forgetting it's not there in my ICE vehicles. (plus I worry about driving with 1-pedal in slick conditions where mentally I'm trained to fully lift the accelerator pedal when I fell slip
I own a Tesla and drive ICE all day for work. One pedal driving takes like less than 10 minutes to get used to and it has never interrupted my ability to drive ICE
@@WarrenWeekly Yeah but the Ioniq 5 does BOTH! You can one pedal drive and you can coast. Coasting is great! Set regen to zero and you'll get big range increases. That's how my 2017 Ioniq rated at 200km range got a world record of 420km (in europe). By switching off regen and using coasting.
@@ChristianLanctot you can coast in a Tesla. You just don’t take your foot all the way off the pedal.
@WarrenWeekly that's not real coasting. And its really hard to do. You've only got a few cm of foot travel to keep it at coasting. And if the terrain changes, like going down a hill or up a hill, you're not longer coasting, you have to readjust.
It's not really a coasting mode. You're just taking advantage of the spot where the on foot driving part of the software just doesn't accelerate or decelerate. So it may feel like coasting but it isn't.
With real coasting you can actually accelerate going downhill without doing any fancy footwork.
@@ChristianLanctot I guess I just never want to actually do that since it just won’t decelerate unless I use the physical brakes. I find it really easy and it’s super controllable without pads
Thanks for the thorough review.
I LOVE the design of this - EXCEPT - the numerous slits and lines in the weird plastic bodywork. Why didn't they use more of the pixelated look of the lights and repeat that? For such a beautiful machine, the lower bodywork really throws me off - this car would be styling knockout if they had just refined those panels a bit more. Excellent review, as always!!
Design is dope, shrink it down to hatchback size and make it sportier. I'd be all in

I love this car. Unfortunately in the US you can only get the RWD model with a resistive heater. My ideal config would be long range RWD with a heat pump and 20” wheels (also unavailable on the RWD car). Throw in a rear wiper, USB-C, and wireless CarPlay and it would be perfect. Like Yuri, I think the one-pedal mode should be persistent upon restart; it would irritate me to need to turn this on for every drive.
Agreed. Wonder if they go back to default so it won’t be confusing if you switch drivers. But cars now should be able to recognize its driver or offer a driver memory setting selector.
@thestraightpipes you guys should really go to Québec to see how good the government owned charging network is! Keep up with the content!

Great review!
I have to say that by now I kind of wonder if anybody really actually changes anything about their climate control? I for one have it in Auto mode forever and only change the temperature from time to time by a degree or so. Never ever have to change the vents of the speed of the fan 🤔
I mean in the end it's automatic for that exact reason, so I don't have to care at all.
About the charging infrastructure: this seems crazy! Makes me really happy about the situation around here in Germany. Especially because it's so easy to fit a 11kw charger to basically any house because we have a good cable with 400v coming into every house.
Excactly. Defrost should be physical but a/c is a/c, dont have to touch it. I have a same problem with no hd back up camera complaints, how clear do you need to see something blocking you…
The climate control in my car is manually changed all the time...it's not always to the most comfortable temp or fan speed for me, let alone the other people in my car who may have different preferences (some are cold when I'm burning up, and vice versa). Not to mention, the fan speed is not always optimized for the situation (when you need much higher speeds to cool/heat the car, or much lower speeds if it's highly unnecessary and borderline annoying).
@@rousseau327 Sound like a bad automatic AC to me or really specific needs or so...
@@MichaelPanzer The system works just fine, as it was intended by design. Ambient temperature preference is just one of the most preference based things in a car. It's hardly a specific need.
Oh yeah, thanks for the review. One last thing; seat comfort is very subjective. Bjorn Nyland, a self-professed small asian, found the seat comfortable over 1,900 Km.
It is definitely extremely subjective
I like how this is almost the only review where they understand pull the left steering wheel paddle gives you max re-gen and works as a de-facto brake pedal.
As you no doubt know, forecasted range reduction when you turn up the heat only lasts until the cabin comes up to temperature.
11:17 - this is why it's so hard to choose an electric car that's not a Tesla in 2022.This car, the Polestar 2, the Rivian all seem like cool cars but the charging infrastructure sucks if you can't use the Supercharger network.
Didn't Elon say he wanted to open the supercharger network to other EVs? I will never buy a Tesla, but if I can use their network with my future EV(s), that would be a huge help.
@@snakeeyes9246 I think I heard that as well. My guess is that Elon / Tesla wants too much money from other manufacturers for the privilege of using the Superchargers. So, nobody has "licensed" the network for their cars.
I own the low range original 2017 Ioniq EV and even with all the hassles of public charging I still love driving electric. Can’t beat the cost savings and ultra low maintenance. I haven’t seen any battery degradation yet. But i think thats because I rarely DC charge.
If you guys check out Bjorn Nyland's video regarding the Ioniq5 and the EV6, apparently the body design of the EV6 quarter panel and rear causes the aero to flow in a way that keeps the rear window clean. Something you guys can look into when you do your EV6 review.
Such a good design! Thank you for the review.
Damn, Hyundai is nailing it
There's a $1000 coolant change (low conductivity) required every 3 years but not on the EV6?
Digital rear view mirror is coming in next MY as well as preconditioning for charging. I am waiting for those. In the meantime, one can get aftermarket rip spoiler and attach it bottom part of the rear window. That will create vortex and prevent grime from sticking on the window. EV6 gets less grime on the rear window for that reason.
My 2018 ioniq hybrid has all lithium batteries, no traditional 12v system. No noticeable battery degradation. Although it is less than 2kw total and certainly not a plug-in or full ev. Its really a great and still underrated car. I see more driving around all the time. The Ioniq 5 looks great.
Beautiful car. Saw on on the way home last night. The charging issues are why I won’t buy one at this time. I also feel that it isn’t the complete answer to reducing pollution because of its overall cumbersome nature.
Same here, I use a vehicle to get to places for work and for fun, without a reliable charging infrastructure it is a hard sell to me also.
@@mannyechaluce3814 how often do you drive farther than 260 miles in a day?
On road trips, I get. For work, not so much since you can charge it to 100 every night if you would like.

Love the design of this car. Looks 1970s and 2030 at the same time. It looks like it belongs in a video game. My favorite design of the year
Also had 2-door GTI, kills the back with kids. Replaced with Elantra N, plenty of room for rear-facing seat though I have bumped littlest one’s head a few times. Wish it was a wagon but works great as a backup kid car. Kids love the loud noises and call it the “vroom vroom” car. Wanted one last manual before they go away forever. It’s sooooo fun and I get 35 mpg in eco mode, not that I ever use eco mode. Vroom vroom!!!
Great video! The Hyundai Ioniq 5 looks absolutely amazing! It is spacious, flexible and has a sustainable interior made from sugar cane components and crushed PET bottles.
You guys have to get a level 2 at one of your places. Even if you only have a 100amp panel the code in Ontario is actually very forgiving now. even if your panel is “full” it is dependent on usage.
I’ve been watching you guys since the Ioniq HEV/EV trip to Ottawa years ago keep it up.
Ya we wanted to drive it to Ottawa this time but trucks were there lol
@@TheStraightPipes haha ya. Probably better in the Spring/Summer anyway.
@@TheStraightPipes That's exactly what I was going to say. I actually bought a 2017 Ioniq EV pretty much BECAUSE of the HEV/EV review to Ottawa (also bought a '18 Ford Focus EV thanks for that review too), hope to see more eco road trips to Ottawa in the future! If you do a meetup here I'll buy the first round 🍻.
We have an older house with only 100amp service and we just got a ChargePoint Home Flex charger that can go from 16a-40a "on the fly" with the app. So if we are running AC/cooking dinner I may put it on slower charge rate. But electrician said not to worry really unless AC+Microwave+Oven+Dryer+Car...but that would never really happen anyway.
I love this car. It looks amazing, but is it worth having to deal with the electrify America network whenever you take a trip? I think not. Tesla still rules the electric world because of its network.
Electrify America has gotten a lot more reliable in recent months.
Very true, though I will say that for your basic road trip Electrify America will probably serve you fine. I was able to get from Chicago to NYC in a similar amount of time as a Tesla with it's charging network within 5 min of eachother. Only downside is that it might require more planning
i drove from Everett WA back to Salt Lake on EA network.. it was fine
There are other chargers than Electrify America...?
@@brixan... plugshare app
Bezel problem.... wrap it. Done. You're welcome ! lol Nice review guys! Love the Ioniq 5. Looking to pre-order in the next few months.
Upgraded from the seiko to a Rollie?Business must be good! Love the content fellas
It's a great design....hyundai is making a sport version of this called the Ioniq 5N...imagine the design of the ioniq 5 + a little bit tighter suspension and seats. More POWER. Yes. yes yes.
The Korean are killing it lately.
The Japanese and german need to be alert
Great review guys, and finally someone else asking where the rear wipers are on new hatch backs. The Kia EV6, and others also have no rear wiper. Keep on Hyundai/Kia on this as it’s a safety hazard.
The smiles on their faces really help sell the car. Driving should be fun.
I personally like the Kia EV6 looks more of the 2.
Earlier, I went to go to the store, and as I was about to make a right-turn, I had to hit my brakes, as a Ford Mach-E and an Audi e-TRON came racing by, with the Mach-E actually in the lead.
When I got to the store and parked, an IONIK (can't use the correct key)5 pulled in next to me.
Technology may be changing, but idiotic driving still remains the same (looking at you two, Mach-E and e-TRON drivers).
Bought this car in the AWD SE trim last month after driving same Jeep for 15 years, and I'm blown away. My first choice was the Model 3, but for the same price I got this (with AWD!) plus the tax rebate.
I’ve been noticing this this car in Edmonton recently. Loves it, so refreshing. Em Koreans did a really good job with the design.
Someone took a hatchback shape and pressed Enlarge by 40% in Zbrush. 🤣
Finally a proper NON UK review. Getting sick and tired of all the UK reviews with their improper terms and backwards designs and ugly plates.
Thank you!!!!!!
Exterior looks great! Can't get behind capacitive climate controls, however. I'm with Jakub on the white bezels- BLECH!!!! I also can't wrap my head around the size of this thing. It looks like a Golf competitor but has a longer wheelbase than a Telluride and dwarfs a Focus?? I'd have to see it in person.
cant believe this is a production car, looks so futuristic
