- The 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 (~$59,900 CAD as specced, ~$54,900 USD) is the beginning of the new EV series from Hyundai. Today we have the AWD long range model which has been specced with the ultimate package. That means it gets all sorts of goodies such as the vision sunroof, dual motors, and the augmented reality heads up display. Amazing the leaps Kia and Hyundai have made since like a 2002 Accent, Rio and Optima. Super innovative.
It really is impressive. I remember getting these crap Hyundai company cars (or rentals) 20yrs ago & they were terrible. Now Korea makes quality vehicles w/ some luxury benefits & you don't feel like a loser driving one. Kia & Hyundai are doing great things!
I have owned 3 Sonatas. All great cars. Current one is a 2020 base model and it practically drives itself.

Yup, and design-wise kia took a leap when they hired the lead audi designer from early 2000s audi. He's no longer with them but they have it figured out now
If James buys the Ioniq5, he will be the 7th car reviewer to buy a Hyundai/Kia product that I've seen.
Doug Demuro got the Stinger, Carlos Lago has a Telluride, Car Confections bought a Sonata N, and I think the others are Matt from Carwow, MotomanTV, and Everyman Driver.
People that are testing new cars all the time are buying Hyundai/Kias with their own money and putting their families in them; that's really the most compelling argument there is.

I like that both Hyundai and Kia have gone very different directions with their design aesthetics and both been successful. I don't think this looks like a small car but I do think it would look better as a small car.

Excellent perspective and I totally agree. I’d like to see more small EVs which prefer practicality over 0-60 too. 250 miles is more than enough range for most people in European countries, so more Renault 5 sized cars over SUVs.

I'm 6'5" and having your 6'6" sound engineer sit in the back of the car is the most useful bit of information I've seen in countless reviews and videos. Big props for that! This, alone, earned a subscribe XD

I'm considering this for my next car. I remember a Hyundai Pony my Dad drove in the early '90s, how the door slam sounded like a tin can, so flimsy. Hyundai certainly has come a long way.
I had Huyndai ioniq 2017 hybrid. It was pretty good. I had to sell it because I went to financial problems and it wasn't fully electic like this so I couldn't afford gas because well it wasn't even plug in version. I did a huge mistake by buying the cheapest 2017 model but still it was my best car so far and I drove 200km/h one time on an empty highway

Even Korea version of ioniq 5 has digital side mirror.
I think it's better than nomal mirror. Especially when rainning day and night.
I always satisfied it's space and performance.
The funny thing is Everybody looking my car. b cuz it has unique and futurestic design.

It’s really amazing how well Hyundai did with this car. Everyone likes it. It’s funky in all the right ways. It’s modern without being tacky.
I have an Ioniq EV from a few years ago and I absolutely love it. Once I’m done paying it off I will likely get a new one with better range.

Hopefully they don't have the constant/massive fails rolled into an EV as they've had for way too long with ICE setups. Still wouldn't piss away $ on anything from HyunKia as that garbage will never truly cut it.

I just saw one at the mall, it's tacky as hell inside. I know the reviewers in this video liked the exterior styling but I think it looks like the 80s called and want their "futuristic" car back.
First I liked Kia EV6 better but more I look into these two (Ioniq5 and EV6), I am starting to liking Ioniq5 more. It's very unique in design, no cars (gas or electronic) in the market look like Ioniq5, it has it's own style that is very unique. Furthermore, Ioniq5 is capable of covering all round ages target, from young people to old people, don't matter, this car will fit into their style whether you are teens and seniors (60+).. extemely well balanced in styling.
I think Hyundai nailed it to be honest. It looks awesome and ticks so many boxes in terms of what you'd probably want out of a daily driver/family car.
This is the car I ordered in July and still waiting . these reviews make it seem more like I made the right decision. I have mostly driven sportier cars but now I bought a 21 Honda ridgeline and love the more comfort oriented ride. The Ioniq 5 sounds like it rides comfortably and I am near 70 so say no more! I loved the review and you guys have a natural comedic wit (similar to Ryan Reynolds ) so that is a compliment to you guys

I know someone that ordered a Mercedes E series amg convertible and it took a year for then to get it and they were missing some of the chips to complete some of the interior features so she has to go back and take it in to get installed.

The interesting thing is that the Chevy Bolt exists... And no one gives a damn. They squandered one hell of a lead with unfortunate styling and pretty much zero marketing support. Next to this? It would literally be invisible. Awesome work, guys!

GM never marketed it nor pushed with dealers. Crossovers and SUV were short term profit grabs. This is long term business.
@@erichellner956 they were hoping to put support behind the new model year 2021 Bolt EV and EUV but stepped back when the recalls happened for the older models as brand sentiment / consumer confidence in the nameplate were poor. They were / are continuing to suffer in terms of production capabilities due to the chip shortages too. Just a general clusterfuck and lack of ability to capitalise on being early to market, with a cheaper (but worse) EV option. Source: I worked for them

This IONIQ 5 is to EV SUV's as the Mazda MX-5 RF is to the roadster. Both iconic, both current, and both are undoubtedly going to be classics.
Hyundai could just make a 75% scale version of this and sell it as a Golf GTI alternative and the sales would be insane. They really should it'd be so easy.
I'd 100% buy it if it was a hatchback. I hate the size and height of SUVs, but it looks fuckin amazing. I just want the same but smaller.

The exterior design is major 🔥!! It has sharp futuristic lines, with a rally hatchback sort of design to it. Not too big, not too small. It’s really good looking! 10/10!!

Looks like first drawing of VW golf, it's not good looking. It's ok at best. It has nice elements but as whole it not that good. LCD screens in interior also look cheap and boring. Zero style pure utility. Perfect car for people that hate cars.

It has a shortcut for the heated/ventilated seats! Just push the “warmer” button under climate button it will go to that screen if you have latest software update 117 :)

Still one step longer than it should be. Heated and ventilated seats should always have dedicated 1 push buttons. It can still be on a screen but should always remain static. Like the row of controls at the bottom of a Tesla screen.

When I was a kid in the 80’s and they penned what a car in the future would look like, this was it! I can stare at this car all day long. I would easily be proud to drive that thing around any car crowd in town.

Whenever people ask what EV I would recommend, the first car I'd say is the Hyundai Ioniq 5 / Kia EV 6. They nailed it.

I've been eyeing the Genesis GV60. I like the styling more and the overall package but the price might be going out of my range (not officially announced yet but est. to be about 4k more than Hyundai/Kia)

James is a genius!
Hyundai and Kia deserve a lot of credit. They are pushing, innovating and looking for different paths. I couldn't quite convince my family to buy one because cars are big investments and carry a significant fear, but it will eventually happen.
Investments appreciate in value. This won't be appreciating in value any time soon. 😉

I love the way this thing looks. Even 10x better when you see one in person. It looks like the futuristic classic Honda I always wish they had made. I do like the new Honda EV too tho
Hyundai designed the best gear shifter. Great position, easy to operate, no need to look & fully frees up the center console.
This is the first affordable EV that could actually fit my family of 5 (three kids in car seats) and it doesn't have terrible build-quality issues. I'm very interested in checking this out.
Also that recharge speed and range are pretty exciting

@@Superfastjellyfish669 While I agree that charging speed and range are good things, maybe even the number 3 and 4 features for my personally, it could charge in 1 minute and have a thousand mile range but if it doesn't fit my family, it's a no go. I am able to charge slowly overnight at home every day and only need about a 40 mile range typically, so a plug in hybrid with a battery with 40-60 miles of range would be awesome with the right vehicle but we have so much of those in the US.
@@fluxcapacitor3000 Most homes in the US have an outside outlet and if you plug in every night, even with slow charging, you should be fine. EVs should be focused on home charging, not exchanging a gas station for a charging station.

You gotta love what Hyundai/Kia have been doing. I traded in my Audi and got myself a 2022 Sonata N line with that 2.5T and it is absolutely mind blowing what Hyundai are doing while still offering these price points. Fantastic cars. This Ioniq looks better than the Model Y in my opinion.

The only Tesla model body I like is the Model S. The Model 3 looks acceptable. But the Model Y looks like a bloated Model 3. I don't care for the interior of Teslas, however. I like Kia and Hyundai's designs. Even the Sonata which some people criticize. I think it looks great.
Everytime I see this car on YT I'm increasingly accepting of its looks. I definitely think in person I'm more on the EV6 end of it, still, even though it'll be a little bit less unique. My concern is going to be price gap, because this thing gets a Bose sound system and what, mid 300 horsepower at the top end, and it's $60K CAD...
The EV6 will be getting a meridian sound system, and 577 horsepower at the top trim... And I'm really scared it'll be the first Kia ever that is "unaffordable". So we'll see.
One interesting tidbit about the wheels, for some reason in other markets there are actually a shit ton of wheel designs to choose from. In the Hyundai group on FB someone showed their website (Norway) and there were maybe 6 different designs. So even if they don't make it to the U.S., you'd probably be able to fix the wheel problem with enough scheming & searching, but for a decent chunk of money because OEM wheels always cost as much as a human leg.
Human legs are also much easier to come by. Especially since the pandemic when you can’t get certain wheels.

EV6 is also going to be sold by Kia's notoriously garbage dealer network. No chance in hell I'm buying another Kia - no matter how good the cars get - until they've completely overhauled the dealership experience. At this point I think it might require something on the scale of buying back all their existing dealership licenses and starting over.
@@deep.c I've heard the horror stories. Fortunately my Kia dealership has been the best experience I've ever had. It's a shame they can't be consistent. But yeah, I've gone through Nissans, a Mazda, a Honda and a Hyundai and my Kia dealer was my favorite. PERHAPS it was because I had a Stinger, and they have their people put an emphasis on those customers, but that's all I can speak for. Me. The dealership itself is nice too. Good showroom, good salespeople and it's always clean 👌 when I've gone & waited for my oil change.
So as long as they don't change, I'm cool buying another Kia.

We were also impressed by the design features, comfort, futuristic approach and innovative all electric power. Hyundai seems to be putting in the extra effort to bring a solid entry into the EV space, the future is looking bright for electric vehicles if more stylish entries like this get added to the market.
Hyundai did very well on this! The good looks, bigger than it seems, and appliance grade (unremarkable) operation are 100% on point with the market. Get a big (240v) home charger and possibly a work charger (getting more common) and never hit a filling station again! Great review dudes!
"Big home charger" in Europe is 22KW 400V three phase. 🤙
I like where Hyundai is headed with this. As for best looking EV: I'd have to go with the Audi Etron GT (unfortunately in terms of specs it's not as great)
The Audi etron is like a 100k you can’t compare the two. This is the best looking main stream EV for the masses with a usable range and great recharge speed over the Audi
@@Superfastjellyfish669 Um... yes you can compare any two cars in terms of looks. Sure, they're not in the same price bracket and not catered towards the same crowd, but that doesn't make the cheaper or more expensive one any prettier (subjectively). It's also just an opinion (I personally prefer the Taycan over the Etron in terms of EV looks, but I also really like the looks of this Hyundai as well)

@@dlwoans5672 I can compare by saying this Hyundai in my eyes looks better than the Audi, but a Taycan looks better than this Hyundai. Just my personal opinion, and everyone has different tastes. An expensive car can be ugly; again, just because it's more expensive doesn't make it prettier.
@@Superfastjellyfish669 This isn't really for the masses either. No one is spending over $35K for a Kia or Hyundai that's not a Telluride. The closest EV for the masses is either the Honda e or the Nissan Leaf, both of which peak out around 35K for high trims.
Nothing about electric cars is going to catch on until they are selling at Honda Civic/Toyota Corolla prices.
I just got my I5 on Friday and wow I love it. It is the AWD with Ultimate pack. It drives way better then a Model Y. It is was quieter and smooth. It needs a wiper on the back but not a huge issue. You can still see out of it with it a little dirty. I love it and glad I got it. Thanks for the great reviews guys. I am in Edmonton and it is cold so it is getting a proper test here. So far so good.
The wiper Hyundai say they will gonna add digital room mirror.
@@studiobdsj7629 Yes adding a digital rear camera to the rear view mirror is a good idea but it still will get dirty from road salt and grime. still have to clean it. it really does not get that bad you can still see out the back even on the worse days here so far.

@@studiobdsj7629 Yeah I am in Canada, Edmonton, and it is a mess on the roads in the winter. dirt salt and rocks. the front sensors get frozen up and the rear window gets dirty. But you can still see out of it even on the worst days. But you do have to clean the car in the winter for sure.
13 years ago, my father bought the ugliest yellow Samsonite hardcase suitcase I've ever seen. I was horrified, but over time, fell in love with it. It's unlike any other suitcase, and always stands out at the airport - it's the only hideous yellow Samsonite I've ever seen. It's my bag. I love it.
Today, I watched James pull that same Samsonite out of the trunk of an electric car. Huh. You guys have HORRIBLE taste in luggage. Bravo.

This car is so elegant I just bought mine yesterday, I was extremely lucky that they had one in the lot. Super spacious! You can have the seats all the way back and someone who is 6 ft tall sit comfortably. Yes the torque is insane too. I love my new car 🖤
Just seen my first one in person today while in my dads 2022 NIRO EV. These things look sexy in person. Both front and rear end is sharp looking. KIA and Hyundai are both killing it in the EV game

I hope you don't have any problems with the Hyundai. I have a 2019 Kona Electric with the battery that can catch fire. Hyunda's solution is to limit the battery to 80% charge, that's right, knock 20% off the claimed range. With no climate control, the range is 180 miles on the highway, (out of a rated 259). I haven't even tried this in the dead of winter when the heater knocks another 20-30% off the range. Hyundai claims that they have battery replacements but WILL NOT DELIVER IT! I've dealt with three Hyundai dealerships (Mirak, Bill Dube and Newport Hyundai) as well as Hyundai's CSS department and NONE of them have delivered a solutions to "Recall 200".

Curious how the RWD version of this (or the Kia EV6) would do in snow and ice during winter. If the AWD version was available with the smaller battery pack I would have already ordered one.
As one of the RWD owner in S. korea, i would recommend to exchange Nordic tire or considering AWD + all weather tire combination during winter.
@@excelsior2989 thanks for the reply. So RWD with Nordic winter tires seems to be sufficient? (Nordic winter tires will be used in my climate regardless of AWD or RWD)
I can’t speak to this car, but I owned four two-wheel drive EVs through Maine winters, including two rear wheel drive (BMW i3 and Tesla Model 3) and found with good snow tires they were excellent. Because of the battery’s weight and the motors on the drive axles, you have good traction (much like how my ‘72 VW had great snow traction thanks to being rear engined). Personally, if I am going to have a two-wheel drive EV, I’d rather RWD over FWD having owned both, and honestly, while AWD is more fun, I almost never felt like I needed it in snow and ice, even driving in serious snowstorms and on unplowed roads, in the EVs I’ve owned.
I drove RWD in the winter. In my humble opinion, it is much better to lose traction on the wheel that's not doing the steering.
That said, if you have months of snow, then AWD is the way to go.
I moved to the tropics and I can confidently say that with mud and water, RWD is definitely my preferred option. With the option to enable AWD of course.
I'd be looking for the AWD version if I lived where it snows a lot. That Kia EV 6 looks better than the Ford Mach-e (the Ioniq 5 does too - imho

we have the EV6 in Germany and I can say the Car looks sick, it´s very wide and low and has a stiffer suspension as the Hyundai.

The few Hyundais I've known have had electrical issues...doesnt instill confidence in a fully electric vehicle from them.
Great car, as is the Kia EV6...............BUT they are all too expensive. The ordinary man in the street can't afford these prices. Ie Peugot 208 petrol is £19,000 ish. The EV version is starts from £28,695. You are having a laugh. What is the payback period for choosing electric. Sorry no EV buying until parity with todays ICE prices.
Get the Kia EV6 instead.
Better range, sportier ride, still great looks (although of different style).
It's sad that probably the ev6 will be sold more than the ioniq 5. Hopefully the future doesn't mimic today's cars. Ugly and overstyled "sporty" non sports cars with stiff suspension should be gone. I want clean muscular looks and a comfy ride for a daily ev.

i’m interested in the comparison between this and it’s kia counterpart. also if it’s that close to a Tesla model Y, if it’s still worth it considering the access to the Tesla charging network
i think as a secondary non crazy road trip car, it should be great. peace of mind is still tesla. but man v11 update sucks.
Considering the fact that Hyundai was trying to hide their engine fires in their other cars before a whistleblower exposed them, I think I will stay far away as I can from their cars.
The whistleblower got around $24 million for it which is insane
if the leaks were true Apple wanted to use Hyundai’s platform for their own ev, so that gives me a good bit of confidence plus it just looks cool. the Taycan is still the ev i want most but this is tied with the Mach E for the one i might actually be able to get

Hyundai/Kia/Genesis are absolutely killing it right now. I really love the Mach-E, but I’d take this over that all day long.
10 years ago I would laugh at virtually anything that came from the brands, minus a genesis coupe of course. I have to respect the incredible effort they’ve put into rebranding themselves.

Great car overall. Fun to drive but also lots of room inside so it's practical.
It's very efficient (100 MPGe) and ultra cheap to charge at home ($6-$10), so you'll save $10-15k on fuel & maintenance over 5 yrs.
It also has a state of the art 800 volt charging system, so it has a very high fast charging system.
I think a lot of people will like this car, hope it sells well!
Kia and Hyundai will probably own the EV market in 5 years.

Like Tesla and what it stands for, but the build quality is putting me off in getting one. Especially when a better built and cool retro looking AWD Ionic 5 can be had for CAD $30k less with rebates ($50k vs $80k). No brainer. Ionic achieved a "cool, want one" status with its Ionic 5!
So would you recommend the Genesis GV60, the Ioniq 5, or the Tesla 3? Also, Tesla has one of the worst reliability ratings (just above Lincoln, so 2nd to last). Would that impact your decision?

Okay, so just looking at this EV and I have to say.. It looks amazing and the KIA version looks even more amazing but I know that Hyundai makes some of the best looking vehicles in the market today at the price you can be happy with.
The Kia will have a very similar price, after all, they are owned by Hyundai

Take the front and back Hyundai badges off and you'll end up with a very cool new brand of EV called Ionic. Not even the steering wheel has Hyundai badge (good on you Hyundai!). Time for Hyundai to create Ionic as the new EV brand, just like they did with Genesis.

Great review again guys! This (and its Kia brother) looks like a really good EV option for the money here in Canada, and I'm a model 3 performance owner.
Here is the only problem that this car has: You need to suffer the Hyundai/Kia dealership experience to own one. A family member of mine tried to buy a Kona EV a year or so ago. The dealer took a deposit and said to wait 6 months or more for one to come. Fair enough, there is clear demand for EVs. 8 months went by and the dealer seemed unsure about when it would come or what options were included in the order. The salesperson who made the original deal was long gone and the overall interest on the part of the dealership to complete the sale was in a word, meh. She got her deposit back and ordered a LR model 3 which came in 6 weeks.
Car dealerships don't want to sell EVs. About a third to a half of their revenue comes from the service department. EVs have fewer moving parts and require less regular maintenance, meaning less money to the dealer on an ongoing basis. As good as this car looks and I think it looks like a good car at a good price, I predict wait times will be astronomical and dealers will be lukewarm at best to promote and sell them.
If you're going to hold onto your next car for years, then in this new EV market we live in, you will be willing to wait 9-12 months. Especially when such an ionic 5 that has a better build quality than a Tesla MY, cool retro vibe, cost $20-30k less! ($30k less with the government rebates. $80k AWD MY vs $50k AWD 5, in CAD.)

The only problem is the badge. No one is going to be in the market for a $50,000 Kia or Hyundai unless it's a Telluride (and even that needs 100% options to get to 50K, without mark up of course). It's why the Stinger failed, and why this will fail as well.
almost 60k after taxes as specced is not affordable for a Hyundai.
@@lukedowney7421 in the US the base starts right around 40k and hyundai still has 7.5k tax credit. all relative, but i think you’re getting a lot at that price.
@@_nisty 45k for a base rwd Hyundai is still a large chunk of money for an EV people buy to justify lower fuel costs. EVs right now are a luxury. You want awd? That'll cost you 50+. Massive depreciation and finance it for a million years on top of that.
@@lukedowney7421 If dozens of people are just caring about the brand on EV like you, many of them would not considering on buying the Tesla. You know that's more expensive then this. Plus, you should test drive it before you say. This Hyundai is really good, better than the most of the EVs from the OEM's.
I have a 2021 Nissan Leaf and I want either an Ioniq 5 or an EV6, my Nissan feels like it has zero suspension, if i drive over a dropped penny it's like being punched in the kidneys and potholes almost knock fillings out. The headlights on the Leaf Suck too, great distance, very clear but terrible at illuminating the curb side so turning left into a side street in the dark is a gamble as you cant see where you are turning and i've driven into a curb or a ditch twice, now i encroach on purposed on the center line to avoid this. Great Review, I will definitely check one out - the only miserable news is lack of stock across the board.
I just dropped a deposit one one of these (Ultimate spec) today. I will do the same for the EV6 when it is available in Canada. I am leaning towards EV6 but not sure till I have test drove both. ETA on both variants is 9 - 12 months right now.
I can’t wait for them to make a smaller version of this retro/modern looking vehicle! My fiancé is going to need a vehicle soon, and this just seems a bit large for what she needs, but a vehicle with the wheelbase of perhaps an X3 or even a smaller size of a Golf GTI would be perfect for her! This car’s just brilliant!
We all have different preferences, I'm looking at it wishing it was larger and higher off the ground.
Ioniq 6 is just about to hit the shelves. Now would be the best time to pre-order one if you like what you find in the Ioniq 5 but want it in a smaller package

Never remotely considered Hyundai until recently. In March I bought a Santa Cruz and have an Ioniq5 on order for my wife.

The Ioniq5 and the EV6 are the only electric vehicles I would actually consider. I hate the look of Tesla and the squashed frog and catfish designs .Well done Hyundai Group!
My dad has a model 3 and while I do like a lot of the tech inside and the supercharger network is great too, the material quality is shockingly low. I prefer the ionic as well overall

I went to buy one of these but it's not a city car, it's huge. I got a Kona EV instead. 10k less for a tiny hatch that's big on the inside. This looks cooler but the Kona is more practical everywhere else unless you're in the suburbs with a garage
Cool car. I think it looks better than the EV6. Can't wait to see what kind of Genesis electric SUVs come out in the next few years.
