“Porsche Wrangler Ioniq 6” - you guys kill me 😂 Honestly I don’t know why anyone picks this over an I5. Yeah, a little more range, but it doesn’t matter when you have 800V charge speeds. I’m choosing an I5 every time. Thanks for the review!
As an owner of a 2022 Ioniq 5, I can get 180KWs out of a 150KW station using 400V chargers. Hyundai take the 400 volts and transform it up to 800 volts for better charging. You don't actually need to use an 800V charger.
There's no doubting Ioniq 5's looks or practicality, and the range is similar in the upper trims (SEL & Limited), but--as others have also stated--the range difference is 19% (361 miles vs 303, or 316 vs 266) in SE trim, which is not insignificant. From the listed Cd and MPGe, it's also safe to assume that gap will widen on highway, where range is likely to be a bigger factor. It's entirely possible someone prioritizes range over interior space or appearance. Since the exterior design contributes to that, it'd be unfair to call it just a styling/marketing exercise.
FYI, my 23MY Ioniq 5 changes lanes on the highway when in smart cruise control mode. I've seen an Ioniq 6 in a dealer's lot when picking up my 5 and agree with you guys, even on the styling alone I'd take the 5 again any day. And with crazy fast charging, the range difference is not critical for me.
Even the original 2022 Ioniq 5s had HDA2 which included lane change and the detection of being cutoff and slowing down automatically. The subsequent Ioniq 5s ran into sensor shortages resulting in Hyundai downgrading to HDA1.5 which had neither feature. That's what is being referred to in the video.
'Styling' aka beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, a personal thing. I love the style of this car and reckon it has it all over the Ioniq 5 which looks like a brick in comparison. Must be something to do with the tastes of millennials and the current prevalence of hulking great SUVs on the roads as being the 'normal car'. This Ioniq 6 harks back to the great stylish cars (2-wheel drive) of the '70s.
Two additional things that need to be discussed. Can it fit two or better, three full sized adults in the back seat, and how comfortable/smooth is the ride? I'm nearly 60 and I will be looking for a comfortable full family sedan. Mostly for around town, including west Toronto/Mississauga winters.
Great video and conversation. I am a long time EV driver and that is rare considering how little they been around and the small population that actually likes owning one. EV's are just too expensive for the general population and the range isn't there yet. I understand material costs rare metals and all but if we really want to push EV's we need to make them cheaper and easier to charge. A Bolt is probably the best EV or a Nissan Leaf for costs but always have a second car as well. I think people need to realize they are just commuting cars to eliminate half the costs of owning a vehicle
Don’t know why this would have not enough range. Current EVs have around 10 times range then people statistically drive daily. Plus being able to charge it in 10-15 minutes eliminates any fear of long breaks for longer trips
Model 3 in the US can be quite affordable depending on the state. The base model is $40K (which is now below the average price of a new car BTW), and on top of that you get a federal tax rebate of $7500 and in some states thousands more off that, which gets the price down to roughly what you'd pay for a Honda Accord. Once you factor in what you'll save on gas and maintenance it will cost you less than a Honda Civic over 5 years. I get that not everyone can afford a new car, but if you can afford a new car, you can afford a Tesla model 3. And as you know, Bolt and Leaf are even cheaper (though far inferior IMO).
If you know it is heavily inspired by 1930s streamliners, mostly the 1930 Saab, you can appreciate the design much more And those little fins (7:08) on the inside are for the screens of the optional camera side mirrors, like blank buttons for options you don’t have
@@ScubaSteveCanada I did see it, it looks a lot better, I know, but I generally feel like it more closely resembles the concept car than most other brands do. Concepts are often ideas without budget, since hyundai still isn’t a premium brand I never expected anything like the concept to actually exist. I don’t understand what you mean that the Ioniq5 looks like the prototype, it is a very different design?
As others have said, the reason to choose the 6 over the 5 is efficient/range, and style preference. But I also get what James and Thomas are getting at. Being on the same platform and close to same weight, they haven't differentiated the ride/handling enough to give up the utility. The trunk is really small, 12cf. The model 3 is 15, or 19, depending on how it's measured. The 6 is a subcompact trunk in a midsize sedan. So it's a family sedan without the trunk. And feels the same as the 5 in driving. So I see why they would choose the 5. Interesting that the biggest draw, 360 miles range, is on a trim level not available till later in summer...
I think one reason for the ioniq 6 is if the extra 50 miles of range matter to you. Otherwise i agree thqt the ioniq 5 is a more practical car for the same price
I really wanted this car because i think it looks so cool. Im looking to get an EV as my next car in a year or two. But hearing them tell me in plain terms why an iqonic 5 actually makes more sense has me changing my mind probably. That’s what i appreciate about these guys, they tell it how it is. They aren’t just talking up cars like theyre trying to sell you something for the sponsorship (in fact they trash their fair share). Keep doing what you do ❤
@@Vberar Ioniq 5 has an ultra fast rate for charging; as the infrastructure expands, the range is less of a concern. Plus, with new battery tech, manufacturers will be making 500 to 600 mile ranges. Kind of outdates these EV ranges at 300 mlles or 500 Kms. Yes, my AWD, LR Ioniq 5 gets me over 500 kms on the highway ... in summer, not cooler weather.
I am so hyped for you to drive the Ioniq 5 N. Then you will realize that appealing to the heart is ABSOLUTELY a thing for EVs ;) It uses the same tech for "shifting" as the Vision cars, at least according to my hyundai salesman.
It seems you completly missed the reason for this car. It´s all about range and efficiency. Pretty sure it´s the fastest car to cover a 1000 miles on the market, if you have access to 350 kw chargers, like we do in big parts of Europe. That said, I agree with you about the Ioniq 5 is a better daily driver. And on a side note, my Ioniq 5 from 2021 can change lanes, it´s part of HDA 2, that you can get in the Ioniq 6. As always a nice alternative video about a car. Keep up the good work, I enjoy your stuff even if you don´t have all the facts straight :)
Great video, but I think it should be mentioned that ioniq6 is way more aerodynamic and therefore more efficient than the ioniq5. That means more range on the highway, less charging cycles and the batteries should degrade less.
I've ordered mine. It 'spoke straight to my heart' immediately!! I love, love love the Look! LOL i already have a potato shaped Tuscon with a trailer for all my space and hauling needs.
Interesting. The Australian versions get cameras and display screens at either end of the dash unlike this top Canadian version. Some say mirrors are a higher definition alternative anyway.
Ioniq 5 N is coming ftw. The biggest issue with Ioniq 5 is lack of buttons to operate basic things like audio..you guys forget that. The ev6 and gv 60 fix that
Y'all totally missed the point! This is a hyper mileage long distance modern day streamliner highway cruiser. The Ioniq5 is more practical but the 6 gets 60 more miles of range - thats huge! It reminds me of something Saab would make, down to that rear end design and center moutned window switches ✨
The Iomiq 5 also switch lanes automatically if you turn on your turn signal. And it does also cemter itself in the lane and can move within the lane if the car next to the Ioniq 5 swirles in to your lane. At least in my Ioniq 5 produced in 2021 European spec
@@volcalstone No he did not. Original 2022 Ioniq 5s used HDA2. Due to lack of sensor parts, Hyundai used HDA.5 which did not have those two features in 2022 models.
I just leased the 6 SEL AWD and absolutely love it. I have a Mustang and a Mazda CX-5, and the Ionic kicks the ass of both of them, I don’t know wtf these guys a talking about. I don’t use the lane keeping because I don’t like the car deciding where in the lane I drive. I don’t really like SUVs so I haven’t even considered the 5, (the wife chose the Mazda) the only thing I like about the Mazda is the doors lock when you walk away. Tbh there is a lot of bells and whistles I don’t need, the 318 mile range is more than I need and better than any car I’ve ever owned. More over its improving my health, I’m getting up earlier, do my daily walk, which I’ve been avoiding, while it charges (I bought it for work and drive up to 150 miles a day) It jumps off the line and hits 100 mph before you know it. Again better than both my other cars. With the write offs and the free 2 years of charge it cost me less than the gas I was using. Plus the Mustang is getting old and was starting to rack up repairs. The 6 also comes with 2yrs free maintenance. Based on my early experience I’m completely sold on electric, have been waiting years for electric to happen anyway. I’m not disappointed.
People seem kind of indifferent of the look it seems. I've seen a real one for the first time in the last days and I think it is absolutely stunning. The comparison to the EQ Mercedeses is logical, yet still, while those look like ugly blobs, this is amazing. Just my 2c though.
Stunning? I think it's horrendous... I would be ashamed to even get into one. Not joking, not trying to be rude, I was actually like: "what the hell happened to designers lately..."
I think it's one of the ugliest cars to be released since the Fiat Multipla... I know they're supposed to be "inspired" by the Porsche 911, but I can't see it, it's just extremely ugly.
A car as a tool isn't strictly down to storage space. I mean between this and the 5 i don't know if that's the only difference. But the overall car size is massively important.
I now own the Ioniq 6 and love it. It improved so many little things from the Ioniq 5, although hopefully some of those things come to the Ioniq 5 via software updates. The only minor criticisms are the front sensors still go off in reverse and can't be silent by default in reverse, and the current limiter of 115 mph seems a little low not that I would ever try to go that fast outside of the track. If you want a track car, you should wait for the Ioniq 5N or 6N, but they will cost a lot more.
Hyundai has been knocking it out of the park with respect to new style/style direction. Where they take a few steps back is with the details. This car (much like the Ioniq 5) suffers from WAY too much weird body cladding on the lower portion of the vehicle. If I purchased this car, I'd have that weird black strip that runs into the back bumper painted body color - that would go a long way to tone done how weird the little vertical elements on the front and rear bumper really break up such a beautiful car. This is another example of where the concept car was WAY better looking. Perhaps for the 2nd gen - they'll edit some of the plastic bits and just focus on the shape. Great review, as always - I love your channel.

Can't stand the look of this thing, but weirdly happy that Hyundai have the guts to try things. Absolutely love the 5 however. Hit (5) and a Miss (6) imo.
Hyundai Kia and Genesis is working so hard and is improving like never before I especially like Ioniq 5 Genesis and EV 9 They still have room to improve but they have been checking all the right boxes
The Ioniq 5 or EV6 seem to be the better choice personally. The Prophecy was a home run and they kinda botched it in production imo. Great video again guys.
I've been following the rollout of this car for months, and so far I've not seen a single photo or video of the front end with a North American sized license plate affixed. If someone has a link to such a photo, please post it in reply to this comment. I'm wondering where it attaches so that it doesn't affect either the forward-facing sensors or the air intake louvers. Thanks!
when I first purchased my Kona EV in 2020 and it was the summer with stock nexen tires, I saw 361 miles in eco mode at 100%. I wouldn't be surprised if this eclipsed 430, given how hyundai's numbers through EPA are drastically underwhelming.
I hate to agree. I thought they learned their lesson with the new Sonata. Apparently sales are down because of the styling. This is not a pretty car, nor will it be a classic.
I know what James meant, and I agree, but I will say my Pixel 3 died about a year ago and so I had to get a new phone and ended up with the Pixel 6... I honestly miss the Pixel 3. It wasa better design in almost every way... Fast enough, screen was big enough, felt *way* better in the hand, fingerprint reader location was *way* more logical, wasn't as big and felt more natural in a pocket. Really a shame and I wish I had shopped around more for something as close to that as I could get, because most of the newer phones aren't well designed.
The new Samsungs are pretty good in the hand (if the S ones aren't in your budget, the A series are really good as well, I own one myself, and they don't cost an arm and a leg)
I've said this several times to different people, but compared to my s22 ultra, objectively I believe the s21 ultra is a better phone in both design and overall performance. Kind of wished I went to that when I upgraded from the s20 ultra, or waited for the s23 ultra (lots of reviews noting it's a genuine upgrade compared to the current turd in my pocket). However if there's one phone design that I would love to see modernize, it's the LG G2. That design is my all time favorite for a phone, right next to the HTC One M7.

I don't completely agree. The phones had underwhelming hardware even for the time. So today's processing would not run on them. The cars are finished products and will continue to run. Sure there will be cars with better CPUs, bigger and faster batteries. But the car itself will run just as well as it does today. No different than a Toyota Corolla from 2010 vs today.
I did a test drive of the car just today, salesman allowed me to go as fast and as sharp in corners around the parking lot. Only complaint was just head space in the back oh and no camera mirror but I can live with that.

Honestly I don’t know why anyone picks this over an I5. Yeah, a little more range, but it doesn’t matter when you have 800V charge speeds. I’m choosing an I5 every time.
Thanks for the review!
The reason why some of us would pick the I6 over I5 is the fact that some of us still do love our sedans, like I do!
@@ScubaSteveCanada wasn't aware of that, thanks for clarification!
My personal preference is range :)
I couldn't care less about the range. I rarely drive 300 miles in a day.
Just test drove the Ioniq 6 RWD in Black
Looks amazing in person!😎
I think the main thing that's gonna motivate some people to choose the Ioniq 6 is the extra range. iirc the base model 6 has around 100 km more
Hi Phil. I'm Phil. 🙂
If you know it is heavily inspired by 1930s streamliners, mostly the 1930 Saab, you can appreciate the design much more
And those little fins (7:08) on the inside are for the screens of the optional camera side mirrors, like blank buttons for options you don’t have
It will age like fine American cheese left out on the counter.
@T Bread Guess you never saw the Prophecy prototype ... far better design than the Ioniq 6. The Ioniq 5 is very close to the prototype.
Excited for the N version of this as Hyundai has teased the RN22E
I think one reason for the ioniq 6 is if the extra 50 miles of range matter to you. Otherwise i agree thqt the ioniq 5 is a more practical car for the same price
Far more practical and with the avg daily commute being around 50 miles, I'd have the 5 all day every day.
@@makatron I certainly love mine! It's a great car

@@DFWsCars yeah and oddly enough I kinda like 3 over Y because how the drive feels, even though Y got the hatch thus making it far more practical.

Google RN22e.
Keep doing what you do ❤
Well if range dosen't mean much for you
Many manufactures will be releasing their own models in that time frame; well if the manufacturer doesn't mean much for you.
@@ScubaSteveCanada wow 500 km thats a lot, at what speed ?
And not just a little more range...we're talking a Tesla-challenging ~360+ miles or something along those lines.
I've ordered mine. It 'spoke straight to my heart' immediately!! I love, love love the Look! LOL i already have a potato shaped Tuscon with a trailer for all my space and hauling needs.
I’m excited to see an N version of either the Ioniq5 or 6 come to market.
The Ioniq5 N is being tested now. There are a bunch of photos and videos of it drifting on ice in camo. Can't wait to see how it compares.
I only care if it handles better. These are more than fast enough. But that will be hard to do because they're so heavy.
Interesting. The Australian versions get cameras and display screens at either end of the dash unlike this top Canadian version. Some say mirrors are a higher definition alternative anyway.
Could be regional requirements? I remember hearing some regions still mandate physical mirrors.
Yes....those wings in Aust are screens.
Ioniq 5 N is coming ftw. The biggest issue with Ioniq 5 is lack of buttons to operate basic things like audio..you guys forget that. The ev6 and gv 60 fix that
Like it, but they really need to get the base model / standard equipment on par with the model 3.
Agree. When they were saying if you want the “appliance car” meaning most bang for buck- Model 3 is the play.
"The boot opens when you..." 😂
Wow not only 2 videos the same day but the same week, wow. Thank you boys keep it up
IMO, the only reason to choose this version is the efficiency and range, but those can be very important reasons for many.
Most of us want a “package” The Ionic 5 and Tesla Model Y has it, those will outsell the sedan “brothers“
The Iomiq 5 also switch lanes automatically if you turn on your turn signal. And it does also cemter itself in the lane and can move within the lane if the car next to the Ioniq 5 swirles in to your lane. At least in my Ioniq 5 produced in 2021 European spec
I think he got it mixed up with the GV60 which only has HDA 1 not 2 like the ioniq 5. I'm not sure which one the EV6 has atm.
@@volcalstone No he did not. Original 2022 Ioniq 5s used HDA2. Due to lack of sensor parts, Hyundai used HDA.5 which did not have those two features in 2022 models.
If the EV6 or the Ioniq 5 are the EVs to go for, how do they compare to Tesla?
im waiting for the N version that they showed a while back
I just leased the 6 SEL AWD and absolutely love it. More over its improving my health, I’m getting up earlier, do my daily walk, which I’ve been avoiding, while it charges (I bought it for work and drive up to 150 miles a day)
It jumps off the line and hits 100 mph before you know it.
This is even uglier than the EQS. At least the EQS was consistent with it's styling all around, this car is a total mess in the rear
I think it's one of the ugliest cars to be released since the Fiat Multipla... I know they're supposed to be "inspired" by the Porsche 911, but I can't see it, it's just extremely ugly.
it’s the SHITTIEST design I’ve seen in an 3xtremely long time 🧐😬
@@mircea5013 Their Prophecy protype looked much better ... tooo many cooks in the kitchen.
It's been 5 months have you traded it yet?
thank you for being the only major us-speaking car show that says hyundai properly (mostly James)
damn, its much pleasant to look than the M2 earlier 🤣🤣🤣
Specsavers is that way son ---->
My girlfriend: "is that the Property Brothers?"
The 5 prioritizes space and retro style and the 6 prioritizes range and modern styling.
The big selling feature is the extra range.
test drove an Ioniq 6 today, spent a day earlierin the week with a Kia EV6; I have a 2020 Ioniq electric with lease end rapidly approaching. I prefer the Kia EV6 so far. Will be driving a Tesla 3 next week, so we'll see.
nice unique shape; too much black plastic add-ons for a $60k car' awkward resolution to the design of the tail lights.
Efficiency is the point.
For me, this looks similar to GM’s EV1 from the 1900s
GM’s EV1 from the 1990s not from 1900s.

Can't stand the look of this thing, but weirdly happy that Hyundai have the guts to try things. Absolutely love the 5 however.
Hit (5) and a Miss (6) imo.
Hyundai Kia and Genesis is working so hard and is improving like never before
I especially like Ioniq 5 Genesis and EV 9
They still have room to improve but they have been checking all the right boxes
Except, Hyundai Canada is terrible to deal with. The EVs are good, customer relations ... bad, very bad. That matters.
Saab with 90s elantra front.😂😂
I trust you guys because your choice in cars are spot on
The Ioniq 5 or EV6 seem to be the better choice personally.
Thanks!
It doesn't undercut a model 3 in the US
Yeah you can get a Model 3 Performance for just under 54K I believe.
I love how you said "that sounds like a conclusion and we can abruptly end the vide......"
Boys this is a comfortable car. Not everything needs to have stiff suspension.
But all car race car.
when I first purchased my Kona EV in 2020 and it was the summer with stock nexen tires, I saw 361 miles in eco mode at 100%. I wouldn't be surprised if this eclipsed 430, given how hyundai's numbers through EPA are drastically underwhelming.
It looks like a hideously ugly Mercedes-Benz CLS
I hate to agree. I thought they learned their lesson with the new Sonata. Apparently sales are down because of the styling. This is not a pretty car, nor will it be a classic.
So range boost and price cut vs Ioniq5 wasn't worth it?
@@TheElectricGhost if you have the exynos version of S22 buy the S23

@@arian_s_collection Nah I'm in North America. @@TheElectricGhost damn.
Those RedWing Iron Rangers look absolutely fabulous! Nice review also gentlemen.
Thomas hit the nail on the head with the iPhone to EV analogy. Car manufacturers have effectively made cars disposable.
The Ioniq 6 has its advantages, especially in range, but the Ioniq 5 seems more practical 🤝❤
I did a test drive of the car just today, salesman allowed me to go as fast and as sharp in corners around the parking lot. Now look, I tend to drive rental indycars for fun on the weekends on a track, tight corners is nothing new, but the Ioniq 6 going 40mph around a post, getting tighter and tighter of a turn, I almost through up, damn car didn't even break a sweat while listening to country music. 😂 Love the car, will be getting one next year. Only complaint was just head space in the back oh and no camera mirror but I can live with that.
Update the thread when you get one cuz I'm callin bs 😄 I can't believe someone who likes to drive fast would chose this hideous monstosity over an M3P
It’s not just a reskinned Ioniq 5 though. It’s on the same platform obviously, but they’ve made engineering changes to the battery system and other electrics in the name of efficiency.
And yet it has less power and less range vs the competition. Nice job Hyundai
@ManuNarang well it has a smaller battery. It is currently one of the most energy efficient vehicles, if not the most, you can buy.
@@danielboyd7810 for reference, a Model 3 Long range (which isn't as efficient as the standard range) is rated for 135 Wh/km, whereas the Ioniq 6 is rated for 139Wh/km.
Also, correction: one of the most energy efficient vehicles you *can't* buy.
Hardly any electric inventory at any Hyundai or Kia dealerships - Even if you find a dealer willing to take your order, be prepared for massive wait times and exorbitant markups. Legacy automakers are shooting themselves in the foot.
3:52 it would have even so easy for his fingers to have been in the way. I’m s happy James didn’t lose any digits over an EV frunk. It would be called “the frunkening”
Isn’t Tesla 3 performance the best value of a sports EV?
Guys, I have a request.
When Freddie (Tavarish) is finished rebuilding his McLaren P1, I'd like to see you two review it.
For my personal taste it is absolutly hideous... which is a massive shame because i LOVE the look of the Ioniq5. That's basically all i have to say, the rest is fine.
(-70km for larger wheels? Is that normal? O.o)
Fun fact/quirk, when in drive, the four dots on the steering wheel are illuminated blue. In reverse, they are illuminated in red.
The Ioniq 6 is much more efficient than the 5 and offers significantly more range. In 15 years the styling will still be cool and probably unique. And you can switch to a new, modern battery pack. Ioniq 6 isn't worthy a fully produced Throttle House video? LOL.
I feel like James would be best off with a plugin hybrid given his use case so he could go electric around town but on a road trip it's basically just ICE with decent mpg... maybe that new volvo wagon?
Lets face it, this thing looks terrible! The IONIQ 5 on the other hand is stunning.
From where I can get the sweater that James is wearing?
Man this car is hideous
Can't wait for the Ioniq 5 N review!
Polestar 2 for me.
I long for an IPhone 4. That was my last iPhone and the locked in iStore with their clunky/horrific operating system. Thar aluminum and the mini they brought back was sweet. ;) A PHEV is 10 times better than an EV now. EV6 and Ioniq 5 are better though. Advocating for an "SUV" on this channel. How long you've come.
That key is the perfect way to describe their entire brand; looks decent but when you actually your hands on it it’s cheap and disappointing
The visual quality of this video is impressive. It’s totally overshadowed by the gargantuan amount of screen real estate those cameras and suction cups take up.
I can't help thinking of the Ford Sierra RS Cosworth when I see the multi-tier fin/spoiler things on the back.
You guys should have done some more research. This car is not an ioniq5. As good as the vids you guys put out are, I come to expect more research by you guys. Jokes and all aren’t enough. I do like facts to go with them.
Agree with Thomas, don't know about this one. Doesn't seem to have the same spark as the 5 and the point about these things becoming old is true. Can't shake that feeling of it being 'disposable'
