Hyundai's futuristic IONIQ 5 is a beast of an EV and their new IONIC 6 takes a lot of what people loved about the 5 and puts it in a sleek sedan body. Alex took the new 6 for a week and is here to share his thoughts on why this is his new favourite electric car.

Definitely. Most of us are still waiting for that break-even point where buying an EV is more or less the same as the cost of an ICE. This one's sorta getting there, but it's still $42k for the base model. That's certainly better than most EVs that have been stuck around $80k-150k. One of these days, that economy of scale is gonna kick in... any day now...
I dunno if they have much control over what cars they're able to test drive though. It seems like most of the cars they review are media samples that get passed around, so it depends on what's available. They're usually commenting that they only have a week or two daily driving the cars until they have to pass them on to the next reviewer.

As per usual, Alex is one of the most entertaining reviewers of electric cars on the internet. Great stuff.
In my opinion the Ioniq 6 has a very mixed bag of visual choices. The rear end is great, and probably the best part of the car. The front end is unoffensive in a “we took the shape language of a Porsche from 10+ years ago and gave it sharper lines” sort of way. My issue is with the waist line. I *know* that they were intentionally breaking the mold with where they put the apex of that arc, but I cannot stand how it visually drops after the B-pillar. And I’d rather the waist line meet the rear portion of the roof line in a different, maybe less-sharp way.

Wouldn't covering the back tires and somehow shielding the front tires lower the drag coefficient even more? The rims definitely look pretty but I'm sure people would appreciate increased range even more than wheel aesthetics. I would also add an option to cover the roof and bonnet with solar panels, it would not give unlimited range but it would give some free range every day, at least enough to cover most people's daily commute to and from work, it would be great to never have to visit a charging station during a regular work week. I do appreciate that it's mostly buttons rather than putting everything in the screen so you have to look away from the road to change things, it could do with more recycled plastic though.

    • @0Rookie0
      @0Rookie0 Год назад

A 100W solar panel at an unachievable 100% efficiency for 8 hours a day would give you just over 5 miles a day in the Ioniq 6. It's just not worth it at this point. Add 20 pounds of equipment to a car, and factor in the solar panels would be locked at a flat angle AND it's not always sunny, and its even less worth it. A lot of consumers don't even park in direct sunlight to begin with. Might as well focus on efficiency improvements of the systems they have already.
Covering the wheels does work but air curtain aerodynamic wizardry does most of that and people like the look more of exposed wheels. In a practical sense, having 20 inch wheels is worse than a 18-17", yet that's what people want and buy. The 1st gen Honda Insight did not sell very well, even though it was a fuel efficiency marvel.

I traded in my EV6 for this and enjoy it way more than I ever enjoyed the EV6. The handling is far more refined and I love the ride. The one big thing I do hate is the silver trim around the infotainment reflects onto the windshield as a bright stripe. Sadly it's hard to vinyl wrap because the glass on the infotainment covers the matte silver trim.
That and the US model currently has a graphical bug in the birds' eye camera. It has a black box around the white stock car photo which looks crappy, furthermore the camera button being on the far right is an odd choice.

Really loving this from Hyundai. I went from a Hyundai Sonata to a Tesla M3P. I still love the design language that Hyundai is going with. I would be very tempted by an N variant, but would need Hyundai to fix some non-starters for me. Namely, one pedal braking not being a default setting? So one of the best things about an electric car? Super easy fix in software IMO. Then Carplay and Android Auto being required to be plugged in? Requiring plugging in on say an Elantra might be okay, but not on a car that could cost 60K USD. Everything else though is very well thought out!

10:00 They changed this for e-gmp cars around a year ago. It was incredibly annoying not being able to take your foot of the pedal without getting thrown in the windshield when in a higher recuperation mode. The smoothened this out. But of course this means a slightly increased, perceived latency. But trust me: it is WAY better the way it is setup now.

interesting because that lag after you get off the pedal is a quirk I didn't care for on my test drive. The other thing that bugs me more is them not telling you what your charge level will be when you reach your destination in the nav, that's very helpful for road trips.

In my experience if you can push the BASS through the doors - is better. A lot better. Its great actually. But its tricky to do - fitting 10’’ in a door is a challenge - usually there is not enought space in the door, and you need to fortify the door, the vibrations from 10’’ subs will rattle your door and panels, and you don’t want that.
The reason why a bass thrue the door is better is the following:
    1) you eliminate the problem of Time correction for the sub (front speakers are about 1 to 1.5 meters away from you, if you put sub in the trunk, thats more than twice the distance - so signal from front speakers will reach you faster than the low end of the sub - you have to correct for that, otherwise you will get moody sound (due to interferences between 2 sound sources) and bass coming from the rear. (In a proper stereo - nothing is coming from the rear! You should hear the stage in front of you! Spaning from right to left pillar, and voice* should be comming from the center of the windshield. Bass guitars and bass drums should also come thru the center) Thats ideal) *=unless purposely mixed NOT to be at the center, thats rare.
    2) sound stage - again you want everything up front - if you put sub in the back - you won’t have that. But lets say you have processor, and can adjust the Time correction of the sub - in my experience - that never worked as i wanted - i still can hear the sub from the back. My solution was placing sub in passenger foot well. But that has its own problems.
    3) bass fro(m the doors sound better - that one is MY subjective opinion - turns out that my front speakers (Dyn Audio Esotec 3 342 i think - 3 way system) are capable of pushing almost the same amount of bass vs my 10’’ front subwoofer (focal utopia). AND the doors transmit vibration more, so what happens is - when i listen to say clasic rock - not much bass there - the speakers can handle that, i don’t need the sub. But if I listed to say Die Antwoord - Rats Rule (extremely low end song) - the 10’’ sub chokes - it makes almost no sound at frequencies below 30hz. The doors CAN’T play that frequency good either - but you get the vibration transmitted to the leg. - bottom line - i get more ‘apparent’ bass thrue the speakers. ‘Try blending them you might say - Let the sub and the doors play to the lowest note they can!’’- it does not work that way 🙂 - if door speakers and the sub run together, even with TCR - i loose the bass. I have to invert the phase of sub to get back the bass. And its not perfect either - its certainly stronger at some frequencies, but worse in others. Bottom line - more speakers playing in unison - the more problems you get. The only redeeming quality for the sub, is at the end of the day it DOES sound cleaner for the most part (when playing by itself, up to 80hz) But i would trade the front sub for bigger speakers in the doors. (I had a plant of putting 10’’ in the doors, but …well maybe in the future).
Problem is - DIY is expensive, and becoming more and more inconvenient, and chances that you will get a good sound are slim - you really have to know what you are doing, and read read read and read material. Then trials. Then measurements - for that at least you need a dedicated calibrated mic…
Car manufacturers potentialy have all the tools to make great sound in any car - but i believe most don’t bother, and or fall for marketing (we offer you 17 speaker system! (Why??? What you do with 17 speakers??? How do you even EQ them???? Or do you turn them ON/OFF - only that can somehow make sense - ‘you preffer tweeters on the dash? - here you go” “ prefer tweeters in the pillar? We got you covered!”.). As well as - the placement - i dont belive there is much say from the audio guys where to put the speakers in a car. I think cars come as is - and audio companies have to figure out how to make it sound descent.
I, if i was a car manufacturer , would do the following - biggest mid-woofers you can get in the doors, mid range speakers - also in the door, say just above the woofers, tweeters Idealy should also go somewhere next to the other speakers but thats a compromise (the driver will probably obstruct the tweeter, passenger will not hear it) so lest compromise and put them on the dash. Add middle channel (i never did, it has its own trade offs, but its better if you want all occupants to enjoy somewhat correct stage). Thats it. MAYBE add a sub sub for..well extreme low end content. But you would want 12” sub for that. And put it up front in the dash as well if possible - why not. Thats it. 6 channel class-D power amp (offcores i preffer hybrid Tube-Transistor amp like PHAZE audio Buttler amp, but thats unreasonable for most people) with processor for fine tuning .In that setup processor tuning will be minimal.
