Fun fact: The rear cup holder being “jammed” is intentional. You press it in once for a pen holder, and a second time for the cup holders. Kinda strange but that’s what it is.
@@njguy2 use a pocket and put the cup holder in the inside, exposed, of the armrest like every other car and forget the stupidity of the mechanics and forget making it more expensive just for the car to "feel" more expensive.
I think Alex' perspective is really refreshing compared to other automotive reviewers. However, I doubt the EQS' customer base shares/recognizes much of his criticism. Alex seems to really value the characteristics of a hot hatch / sportscar, whereas this car is everything but that.
Mercedes has never made sport cars by itself. Only AMG is transforming mercedes cars into sport alternatives. AMG was purchased by Mercedes, but remained independent, so they can modify as much as they want mercedes cars (in some cases they even redesigned entire engines). Hence, when mercedes designs a car, it is not to race, but for conform and safety.
I mean. 1, he does mention that MULTIPLE times during the video that sport driving isn’t the focus of the car. And 2, his biggest criticism, responsive and smooth braking, is - if anything - a more significant problem in a luxury car.
Brakes shouldn’t have a weird pedal feeling. This is something notices by almost every car reviewer out there. Also, using touch controls on the steering wheel is no luxury experience at all. It’s a lame attempt by MB to lower the price
Andy: "Hey Mercedes" Mercedes:"How can I help?" Andy:"I want to go home" Mercedes:"Oh, wry, Gods" Andy and Alex:"What was that" It was the funniest part of the video!!!
maybe the car thought Andy meant China, and the car was thinking water and electronics don't mix!! either that or the number of charging ponts it would have to calculate it would need to find in a working condition, and the number of weeks it would take to charge to get to China!! haha
12:54 i think you guys colored either the graph or the legend of the EQS and S90 in the opposite colors, because it shows the EQS in purple having very good sub bass and the S90 with less bass below 40hz
Some shots showing the car testing and readouts together might be interesting, or help ensure accuracy during continuity checks of the script and what's shown.
@@jinkim89 Yea agreed, I did pause but unless you are a real audio nerd it's all a little meaningless. Alex is talking about the audio in the background, which I missed as I was pausing and then playing and reading, so lost what he was saying. If his scipt was laid out to use the labs data as a reference it would be better - so "Overall I enjoyed the audio in the car, it feels like it lacks a little bass response in more bass heavy tracks and this is backed up by the data from LTT Labs you can see here *insert graph* - a more in depth explanation can be found at the LTT Labs link in the description" Just dumping these data sets in requiring a pause is complete changing how their viewers are having to interact with the video (IMO in a worse way) which I think they still need to work on. Even the editors notes in this video were so quick I had to skip back multiple times - they are funny and I like reading them (especially the bit about hitting a person on the road and being "dumb that you can't do it") but dang do they go quick.

I had the chance to test the EQS. I agree with a lot of what you said. One thing I did like about the car is that with inteligent recuperation, I basically didn't need to brake. The driving assistance feels helpful more often than it feels annoying. Which was a first for me.
At 12:54 there seems do be an error. According to the context given by Alex and the previous graph I think the colors of the graphs for EQS and S90 were switched. Otherwise great information from ltt labs!
Minus the audio dip. Thats fully intentional, when you pull up to a light, or come to a junction, or a car is in your blindspot. The car will lower the volue slightly so you automatically become more aware of your surroundings... And you can turn it off btw

“So much capacity” really confused me because 80-100kw doesn’t sound like a lot, so 170 looked insane. I would say 107kw is like a 4800 mah battery. Pretty normal.
The cup holder in the back wasn't jammed, it was designed that way. The first click is a pen holder then you give it a half click to get the cup holders. Not sure why its like that but it is what it is. Having the lumbar controls in the screen allows you to adjust the lumbar to a more specific spot to help pinpoint specific spots. The MBUX infotainment is very intuitive and easy to use. Yes there are a lot of sub menus but its easy to figure out.
The screen makes me wonder, how will the Apple CarPlay update work with this car? Also, I love how Dennis was the one to judge the message function given his Intel Extreme Tech Upgrade.

Well I drove the eqs aswell and also found the brake feel a little weird. But you can actually change the regenerative braking with the "shift pedals" so just using one pedal driving is very usable. Though to its credit, the underglow and ground-projected logo that appears when you open the doors was actually kinda cool and managed to not look tacky the fact that they block you from getting under the hood is ridiculous though, stuff like this is exactly why we need tougher right to repair legislation.
The question is: What do you want to repair yourself on a EV like this with a lot of high voltage systems and parts that were designed to the extreme to match the high airflow design (and compact design under the hood)?

@@Gruntled2001 My opinon: I don't think German cars are half bad if you can repair them yourselves. I have a 2013 Audi allroad with 152k miles and in the 2 years I've owned it I've only spent about 2k on it. I did timing chains since they're known to stretch and grenade the engine (this is a maintenance item), brake pads, suspension control arms, motor mounts, etc. all the normal stuff for every other car except timing chains. Timing chains were 2k job at local mechanic, 3.5K at dealer. I did it for $490. If you're getting an E46 with the v8 with rod bearings that wear every 100k miles then yeah you're a sucker for a cool car, but most of them aren't that bad.

Love this test! And I love to see that you show the frequency graphs for the audio systems. This was the first time I saw this. Here in Germany the EQS is at the moment the best of all according to some car journalists. But they didn’t show the touch capacitive steering buttons or the cheaped out buttons or talk about the difference between base model and equipt model. And sometimes thy praise the software. But what you showed doesn’t look like even close to be the best. In my opinion this is overall a great car. But in certain spots it doesn’t live to it price batch.
It's actually quite funny how German car reviewers bash on cars from the US like the Mach E, and American channels complain about cars like the iX. But I totally agree with you. Magazines like "Auto Motor Sport" have always been quite biased, especially towards Mercedes. Don't get me wrong, Merc has made a really interesting car, but things like the buttons were not discussed (or only briefly), so it's kinda nice to see someone mention them. Especially the steering wheel buttons. Whos idea was that, that's so stupid.
"Journalists" don't exist anymore, these days it's just people on the payroll writing "reviews" padded with talking points and sales pitches. It's the same thing as fake Amazon reviews.
In Germany they were the first to implement level 3 automated driving with this one and the s class. You definitely should take a trip down here and try it. It’s freaking amazing.

@@Captain_Coleslaw Just a point, but proprietary does not mean secure. It means that it hasn't been tested by too many other groups, and very few will have validated it. Doesn't mean it's insecure either, but it's not a plus. Security through obscurity won't work for very long once the system becomes more common. There's a reason why open-source stuff is considered to be more secure for most use cases, since it gives so many people a chance to break it that you either find the flaws, or have it proven how secure it is. Here's one thing I'm not entirely clued up about that bugs me.... They claim that EV cars look slightly weird because they need to have less drag coefficient and aerodynamics... But why aren't they making ICE cars as aero efficient as possible? We could of been having ICE cars that looked like these that would be getting better mileage for years now right?
@@theproffessional9 I would expect it to be a whole money scheme where many suited individuals hold many flavoured pies, but there are some cars like the honda insight? I think it's that one with some modification people claim to be getting 90+mpg
@@cagatayy1182 oh yeah that would affect it quite a bit, but there is definitely some clever ways to cool such as BMWs active grilles that open and close as required for a workaround
Most high mileage sedans look kind of like this already. For ice engines luxury cars could be hideously inefficient because Rick people didn’t care about mileage, but Rick people do care about range on EVs
I have now owned my EQS 580 for about 13 months, and I like it much better than my 2017 S550. It is smoother, quieter and more responsive than old S class, and its interior is every bit or more cosetting. The sound system is top notch. It is by no means a sport vehicle, but it is the perfect vehicle for long, comfortable drives on surface roads and major highways. The somewhat unusual brake pedal movement is not in fact a problem because it very quickly becomes second nature. The adaptive crise is excellent and the anticipatory nature of "intelligent recuperation" takes the stress out of city driving. On the "strong recuperation" setting with the "creep mode" disengaged, the car is a very competent "one pedal" machine. The Intelligent recuperation mode is much more sophisticated and efficient, however. Combined real world range is about 325-360 miles in the summer and 260-280 miles in a Northeast US winter with the heat on. My average range over about 20,000 miles has been 281 miles. Of course, highway driving is less efficient that city driving because of wind resistance. The range is excellent for long trips even through charger deserts like the 250 mile stretch through in central Pennsylvania USA The haptic controls are very easy to use, and their combination with a relatively sophisticated voice recognition system make operating the vehicle a breeze. There is no need for knobs and buttons. Because of supply chain problems in mid 2022, I was unable to get some options like auto-close doors and the fragrance system. I am looking forward to adding those features and whatever else has been developed on the next EQS version (perhaps the facelift). I drove the EQS with the Tesla Model S prior to my purchase, and by comparison with the EQS, driving the Tesla is like riding around in a sardine can. We almost never take people for long rides in the back seat, but our friends have found sitting in the back quite an opulent experience. The huge space under the lift back gives the car substantially more utility than our top of the marque, mid-sized SUV Of course, the absence of ICE stench and noise combined with the speed convenience of at home charging, qualities shared with other EVs, is an unmitigated blessing.
As a car guy I love this review. I love my ICE engines. I love my V8s and Audi supercharged 3.0T v6 however I'm excited to see what electric counterparts we can have along side ICE for the average non-car guy/gal. I was expecting this to be like every other tech channel's review of electric cars "Ohh big screen. Ohh technology. Ohh this!" but you very critical of options being hidden in infotainment, Mercedes' effort to stop customers working on their own car, and the capacitive buttons and lack of physical controls, especially climate controls. I've tried cars with climate controls in a screen and it doesn't work. Physical controls are just miles better (pun intended). Thank you for a real review of the car as a whole and not just looking at the shiny screens and technology.
You really ought to integrate the labs data into the videos more. I've always thought that with your hardware reviews as well, where there's hardly any visual cues, and the link between the script and the graph on screen isn't always obvious. Trying to listen to the host usually just ends up with me not having understood any of the graphs, really. On that point, Gamers Nexus's habit of drawing attention to a specific part of the graph at exactly the moment the host mentions something relevant about it is really great. Also the fact that they stay on screen for more than, like, three seconds, really helps. You guys really tend to underestimate the time people need to assimilate a graph. Especially if they're being distracted by the host talking. Anyway, this Labs stuff brings this to a whole new level. It wasn't understandable at all without pausing for a very long time very often, and even then. There were acronyms I didn't know because I'm just not very knowledgeable about audio. You have to pick one way of doing things: does the video have time to include and properly talk about graphs? If the answer is no, don't try to cram it in along with the scripts. People cannot read and listen to different information as the same time effectively. Make it a long subsection of the video at the end, when only interested people will still be watching, or a companion piece, or something.
I've watched all of these electric car reviews and just wanted to say that I love seeing Alex review these cars. I had no idea there were so many electric cars on the market and I'm glad someone is taking the time to find out how good or bad they are so I don't have to.
As soon as he talked about the adaptive breaking, I knew this isnt it. One thing almost everyone will hate is if your brake pedals isnt consistently smooth. Makes you feel so much less in control of the vehicle and much less safe.
I Have the adaptive regen braking enabled on my Hyundai EV and honestly once you're used to it it's fine. You learn to predict how it is going to respond depending upon what's in front of you and can respond appropriately. If the Mercedes version is anything like this, I would be more than happy to live with it.
@@Koda14 I'm not just trashing adaptive braking all together, I'm mostly talking about how alex is saying how he feels about it. I've test driven the Hyundai's with adaptive breaking and its feels a little odd at first but nothing alarming.

My dad is in his fifties and recently bought an EQS. I think he's the perfect audience for this car, he's had his sports cars but now he just wants to drive around in luxury in an electric car. And it really is pure luxury, sitting in this car feels like you're floating on the road in absolute silence.
Love the sound quality graphs, and using the volvo as a baseline / relative target helps. As a sound luddite, this kind of comparison tool helps immensely in determining 'better vs worse', at least for me. Keep on adding objective metrics like these to your vids please! :)
The current S class will absolutely be better. But it depends on what you're reviewing, because that one is absolutely an executive's car. It won't corner. It won't go as the EQS does. If possible, I would like a little more time devoted to "EV stuff". How does it handle charging? Does it do the advertised power? Does it handle preconditioning? How is the route/charge planning (it's supposed to be really good in the EQ series) stuff like that. As a whole, having seen a number of reviews, I think the EQS should've been the EQE...and the current EQE should just not exist. Because this most definitely is NOT an S class, in no way. It's also worth a mention, that pretty soon the EQS (and the S class) will be the first production cars you can order with actual, certified Level 3 autonomy capability according to EU regs. At least here in Germany , not sure about other markets. It'll be very limited (almost uselessly so) but it will be there.
I feel the editor had a fair amount of fun with this one, also yes Alex we need context at 1:50! (I'm sure Alex isn't a sociopathy/psychopath however, so likely the latter)
Me in my 1997 sub compact hatchback, that cost me $1000, regardless of seating position: ah yes there is room for my head in here Alex in a brand new electric Mercedes that costs $123,000 USD sitting in the back: ah yes my head is against the roof and will slam into it if we hit a bump. I want electric vehicles to be available, especially in countries like this one where not owning a car puts you at a severe disadvantage due to lack of public transit, lack of bike paths, frequently long distances between residential and commercial zoning, and lack of sidewalks in high traffic areas. Well ideally I'd like all of those things to be fixed but since that's not gonna happen electric vehicle proliferation becomes important. Before someone like me would ever make that jump though they have to be 1)significantly less expensive 2)run as few things through a computer as humanly possible. I don't need heated seats, massage seats, a giant screen for satnav and stereo, a screen for a gauge cluster, or basically anything else that would reduce failure by not being so "futuristic". Not to be an old man here, but I've got no power steering, a manual transmission, crank windows, fully mechanical door locks, a key that doesn't require a chip to start the car, lights that have to be manually activated, a passable sound system, no ABS brakes, rotor ignition, and good fuel economy (34 city, 42 highway) and I like it.
In the "lab notes" on the frequency response, it looks like the Volvo vs Mercedes labels are swapped. Also, it's a bit confusing why the dip around 20-40Hz is missing in the chart at 12:57.
I hate that there is no going under the hood, they're trying to iPhoneafiy cars "Fixing doesn't happen often, so fuck it let's make it hard and expensive as hell to fix the tiniest things and make excuse about how you might get hurt or damage something"

@@rishabhrawat7856 Of course it’s possible. Throw it fast enough sideways into sand and it will eventually flip. The point is they tested the Mode X at speeds well above the standardised tests, for a car with a much higher centre of gravity than this. With Alex’s comments on the cars handling, the likelihood of someone being able to get this car into a situation where it could roll (especially with passengers) is incredibly low.
The title of the video perfectly describes the problem with this video, Alex actually didn't understand the targetgroup of the EQS. The owners are the same as for the classic S-Class, rich (older) people and CEOs who want to drive or be driven absolutly hassle free and with the most comfort possible. It's a luxury cruiser, not a Tesla Model S "sportssaloon" rival. The EQS is an absolute master piece in most of the stuff the target audience wants, and that has been the case for the S-Class as well for many, many years. Alex describes it as "not the best" driving experience, but it's just not made to be engaging and fun, instead it's made to just flow. I think he mostly just stepped a little bit too much out of his typical zone and tried to propose his expectations on what a car should be on this, instead of seeing it as what it is supposed to be. I definetly get some/most of the other critical points (especially the capacitive touch), i'm not here to overly praise the car, it has its flaws, even some big ones! I just felt like Alex missed some points because of his personal point of view.
The Labs analysis is cool, but I have to pause the video for a couple of minutes every second to actually take it all in and then rewatch it to actually hear what Alex had to say. The format needs work, guys.
My E-Class has the hood latch hidden too, I always just thought it was for aesthetics. By the way, It says EQS-580 on the back, and if that car is similar in spec to their 50+ deciliter displacement AMG E-Class sedans, that price is less extreme than it seems. An E63 AMG is over $100,000, but the EQS-580 probably has a little less horsepower.

I think Alex' perspective is really refreshing compared to other automotive reviewers. However, I doubt the EQS' customer base shares/recognizes much of his criticism. Alex seems to really value the characteristics of a hot hatch / sportscar, whereas this car is everything but that.
S-Class are really focused on a comfortable and luxurious driving experience and not for racing
It looks like an overgrown Neon.
The LTT Lab notes were a nice touch! Really enjoyed the extra info!
Andy: "Hey Mercedes"
Mercedes:"How can I help?"
Andy:"I want to go home"
Mercedes:"Oh, wry, Gods"
Andy and Alex:"What was that"
It was the funniest part of the video!!!
Maybe the car got it that they don't like to drive - because they want to 'go'?
maybe the car thought Andy meant China, and the car was thinking water and electronics don't mix!! either that or the number of charging ponts it would have to calculate it would need to find in a working condition, and the number of weeks it would take to charge to get to China!! haha
Its like we watched the same video or something
Maybe a bit flip lol or it’s sentient?

12:54 i think you guys colored either the graph or the legend of the EQS and S90 in the opposite colors, because it shows the EQS in purple having very good sub bass and the S90 with less bass below 40hz
Some shots showing the car testing and readouts together might be interesting, or help ensure accuracy during continuity checks of the script and what's shown.
@@jinkim89 Yea agreed, I did pause but unless you are a real audio nerd it's all a little meaningless. Alex is talking about the audio in the background, which I missed as I was pausing and then playing and reading, so lost what he was saying. If his scipt was laid out to use the labs data as a reference it would be better - so "Overall I enjoyed the audio in the car, it feels like it lacks a little bass response in more bass heavy tracks and this is backed up by the data from LTT Labs you can see here *insert graph* - a more in depth explanation can be found at the LTT Labs link in the description"
Just dumping these data sets in requiring a pause is complete changing how their viewers are having to interact with the video (IMO in a worse way) which I think they still need to work on.
I believe it's the debut of featuring Labs content.

Hence why most encryption standards are open-source.
@@Captain_Coleslaw my rule of thumb is generally : if it ain't open source and it hasn't yet been stress tested by actual hackers, then you have no reason to trust it

Because gas car drivers don't care about efficiency. *Ahem* 20% efficiency *Ahem*
@@theproffessional9 I would expect it to be a whole money scheme where many suited individuals hold many flavoured pies, but there are some cars like the honda insight? I think it's that one with some modification people claim to be getting 90+mpg
Most ICE cars have a grill at the front for engine cooling. That should be changing the air flow a lot
The range is excellent for long trips even through charger deserts like the 250 mile stretch through in central Pennsylvania USA
The haptic controls are very easy to use, and their combination with a relatively sophisticated voice recognition system make operating the vehicle a breeze.
The huge space under the lift back gives the car substantially more utility than our top of the marque, mid-sized SUV
Of course, the absence of ICE stench and noise combined with the speed convenience of at home charging, qualities shared with other EVs, is an unmitigated blessing.
would love to start seeing write ups of the LTT labs data with the accompanying video as it can be hard to appreciate the data in a video format

Unless you're Linus....😂😂
Love the audio graphs! Having a labs website for the audio and colour data you collect will be great!

Me in my 1997 sub compact hatchback, that cost me $1000, regardless of seating position: ah yes there is room for my head in here
Alex in a brand new electric Mercedes that costs $123,000 USD sitting in the back: ah yes my head is against the roof and will slam into it if we hit a bump.

Yes another great Alex car video :DDD
Having lived in Surrey and Langley for a while. It's so much fun to see bits of it in this video.
3:03 “If we roll over I’d Die” I get the point and I am sure it would just be uncomfortable constantly having your head touching the roof, especially over bumps. But if they can’t roll a Telsa Model X, there is no chance of rolling this.
Other than that fantastic review!
Till you huck it around a corner on a mountain road, it understeers and hucks you off a cliff.
I think they showed in a video that tesla Model X is just hard to roll or will get upright even if it gets rolled, it's not completely impossible
I want to see Linus review it ...it will be interesting if he has gotten already the tycan wagon as a daily
He hasn't
@@ggandalff yeah we would have heard about it if he had it
@@pumpuppthevolume Still with the Volt.
@@benwu7980 yeah that's the latest they showed about his car .....but he did say he bought the tycan wagon ....it's just not clear when he'll get it
@@pumpuppthevolume He said yesterday hie's still driving the Volt, so not sure what up with the Taycan.
Love these tech/auto videos! Keep em comin!
I actually don't own a car.
However I really really like your car reviews.
I also don't even want to own a car, BUT for some reason I really enjoy watching the reviews.
It's a bit refreshing from all the usual hardware, and it's actually interesting what cars are capable of these days in terms of tech.
I honestly am more interested in the cars interior than exterior or performance metrics.
Glad to see you're constantly tweaking your target curves for car audio.
I love cars, and I love PCs. LMG is perfect for me. And I especially love that you guys aren't afraid to be really critical of the cars you review. A lot of the traditional car magazines tend to be nice to the carmakers and not mark the cars down in areas where they are bad, probably for fear that they won't get sent future models for review. I know Linus doesn't give a rat's ass about that so hooray for us, consumers!
Love the new LTT labs content! Very excited for the future of it.
good video, don’t know how to do it better, feedback to labs stuff, me, a pleb, has no idea what the graphs mean so short explanation or text under the graphs explaining like in ltt with idk proceccor speed and the “lower is better” or something similar is what I’d love to see
According to Doug DeMuro's review, the quirk with the rear seat cup holders is intentional. It's for quick access to a pen.
Yeah, one press: Pen holder, two presses: Cup holders
