  • The 2024 Kia EV9 ($63,183 starting in Canada, $56,395 starting in the US) is a brand new 3 row electric SUV that can be had in both rear wheel drive and twin-motor all-wheel drive form. In its longest range rear-drive trim, Kia claims a range of 489 km - up from the 370 km range found in the base trim.
    A hefty 379 horsepower and 516 lb ft of torque come with the twin-motor all-wheel drive trims, and the higher AWD trims come with a 6 seat captain chair setup instead of the usual 7 seats. But how does it fare as a people-hauling EV SUV? And how is it to live with? Thomas and James are excited to find out! We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

      Too many like yourself just ignore anything EV, but EV tech is advancing rapidly and ICE can’t really advance much more… EV just keep getting better and better and don’t have the same limitations that ICE have. Most people who ignore EVs would be genuinely surprised by how much better they are getting, all the time. In the future they will automatically charge from the road as you’re driving, and you’ll simply have a plan like a mobile phone, and you’ll *never* have to manually charge again or go to any petrol station. This is something that will happen based on the direction the tech is heading.

      @@jamesgallagher2434 yeah man, ICE cant advance much more lmao bruh my 17 year old diesel goes 1200 km on a single tank. I fill it up and I'm good for 2 weeks. fuckin evs cost 60k euros to go 250 km in the winter, if even that ? the fuck are you talking about. also, my car weighs 1300kg, not some fuckin tank going down the road with 2.5 tonnes

    • @danieltatar7575
      @danieltatar7575 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@jamesgallagher2434 Part of the reason some people ignore everything EV is exactly because of the obnoxious reminders (like yours) of unrealistic expectations that are pushed out by EV marketing teams who think their engineers are some sort of sorcerers.
      Constant promises of techonlogy that will be everywhere in as little as 5... sorry 10... erm, 20... I mean, in as little as 50 years.
      \end of rant
      EVs *are* evolving rapidly, but we're not there yet, and we won't be there with anything that's coming to market this year. So people are safe not to watch reviews for now, unless they're fascinated with the advancement of technology by itself. (But then it's probably better to read up on engineering deep-dives instead of a casual car review.)

    Great review as always gentleman. As an owner of an EV for two years now, I must say, charging and range are so much less of a factor than I thought it would be. That is if you can charge at home. I only charge at public facilities on road trips, and generally speaking, there are a lot of charging options along major highways. I’ve only had one problem in about 25 charging attempts. That was my fault for forgetting it was Thanksgiving weekend, and the line to charge was LONG! Plus, I’ve probably saved a couple grand in fuel, and oil changes so far.

The back seat was so basic and uncomfortable in the Cadillac no heated seats and the front seats were only heated and it was harsh over speed bumps. Then i got in the kia and turned on a massage, adjusted the leg rest and put on the cooled seat and looked around at a nicer more feature packed interior. And the ride was better and it felt faster. I had big hopes for Cadillac but it was a huge let down. Backup camera was really high quality though on the Cadillac.

    I test drove the Kia EV nine a few days ago. It’s best described as the Kia equivalent of a Ford Explorer with a third row.
    The third row is not that great but the first row and second row are fantastic for an electric vehicle. You get heated and ventilated seats all around for the first two rows and this plenty of space for the first two rows. The third row is best for small kids. The only vehicle that I’ve test driven with a third row fit for full-size adults is the grand Wagoneer.
    I am a very big guy at close to 6‘7“. I set in the Kia EV nine the same way I sit in the Ford Explorer and the Ford expedition which is to say that I had plenty of space and could easily drive that car for 1000 miles Without much fatigue. Pretty much every feature that I’d expect an EV was there, including Hyundai/Kia adaptive cruise control with autonomous steering. That feature is fantastic when you’re stuck in traffic. There’s also a massage feature for the driver, although I’m not certain if the passenger seat can get it to.

      @jeffs6090 7 месяцев назад

      High price doesn't necessarily equate to luxury. Something can be expensive and not luxurious at all. Luxury is a feel and a sense. That is why the majority of people cringe when automotive journalists call Tesla a luxury brand. There's nothing luxurious about sitting in a Tesla. However, since it is a feel and a sense, luxury can also be subjective. Just like one person's trash is another person's treasure.

    Personally I think the whole gas vs EV argument is silly. Both have their purpose and pros and cons, I wish the EV fanboys would understand why EVs don't make good sports cars, and I wish ICE fans would acknowledge the obvious benefits of EVs when it comes to daily drivers. I say this as an enthusiast myself, I've owned several manual transmission sports cars including my current c7 Vette. And I'm telling you, when it comes to daily drivers, a well-executed EV is simply better.
    We have a Jaguar I-PACE EV as our daily driver. This replaced our 970 Panamera Turbo (both of which we bought used btw), a car that most ICE fans would probably agree is a pretty good daily driver in its own right. And I can honestly say the Jag is better in every single way. I don’t miss the Panamera one bit, neither does the wife. With the Jag, there’s no automatic transmission to get confused around town, never getting into a hot or cold car with preconditioning, there’s insane instant torque, the smoothness and refinement is unmatched (not only because no engine noise but also because the 1000 pound battery insulates you from road noise), the use of space is excellent (small on the outside and big on the inside because no engine), low center of gravity, naturally perfect weight distribution, being able to blow by anyone in traffic anytime, never being in the wrong gear, way more efficient, never being late because I had to stop for gas, no maintenance, quicker than most v8 family cars and more efficient than i-4 family cars, etc etc. And even though on paper the panamera was faster 0-60, in real life around town it’s not even close - the Jag would be gone before the panamera would even get into the right gear. Yes, it can be annoying on road trips - but it's not the end of the world unless you road trip all the time. It's the better car 364 days of the year, and the worse car 1 day of the year.
    Having said all of that, like I said I'm an enthusiast, and we also have two sports cars (manual transmission c7 corvette stingray and an R56 Mini Cooper JCW, both of which I frequently use for road rallys and autocross), and I have no desire for either of those to be electric. The whole point of those cars is a visceral, loud, lightweight, connected experience with a manual transmission. I know there is a Boxster EV coming soon and I’m sure it’ll be great and smoke my c7 around any racetrack, but I have no interest at all, even as a current EV owner. Sports cars should be gas powered and manual IMO. So as I said, each has their purpose. I don’t see myself ever going back to gas for daily driver, and I don’t see myself ever going EV for sports cars.
    My point is simple: EVs are better at some things, and gas cars are better at some things. "Taking a side" doesn't make sense, even for enthusiasts. Just acknowledge what the other is better at. EVs dont work for everyone (you need a place to charge and can't road trip all the time etc etc), but if it works in your lifestyle - try it before you knock it is all I'm saying. You might be surprised.
    And like I said - just because a car is EV doesn't make it good. There are good EVs and bad ones, just like gas cars. For example, I' not a huge Tesla fan. But, the well-executed EVs are, in my opinion, the best daily drivers, if they fit into your lifestyle.
    ...and this is coming from someone that's currently on his 8th manual transmission sports car (Vette, Mini JCW, 350Z, etc etc). And to be clear - these are my favorite cars, not the I-PACE. But, I have a wife and a kid, and we need something that isn't manual and has a back seat. And in that category, the Jag is by far and away the best we've had.

      You make too much sense to be in youtube comments! I'm with you on this, but of course people on social media tend to take extreme positions. I'm an enthusiast and while my current M3 is not stick, I had my share of stick and raw performance cars that I enjoyed over the years. My wife drives a PHEV and we think it's the best fit for our family. Her daily commute is mostly in EV mode which makes it quiet and relaxing, and we can still jump in and take a road trip without thinking of charging issues on our route or at our destination. I think a big part of the enthusiasts' hate towards EVs is because they're being pushed onto us by politics. Most models aren't selling well despite the incentives.

    Thomas, you just plug it in at night to get that 50-60km back in range. And that’s with only Level 1 (110V) charging. Then you don’t have to worry about finding a Level 2 or 3 public charger. (Most do work btw.)

    What % of North Americans shopping a 3 row own their own homes and can therefore charge at home? Most I'd expect. So for most people likely to be shopping this vehicle, deficiency of charging infrastructure probably isn't a significant factor.

      For around town errands and commutes, yes. The challenge will be cross country road trips.

    • @MLHunt
      @MLHunt 7 месяцев назад

      @@captainvectorgranted. But to me as an EV owner, it'd be more than worth it to have an EV for 50 weeks out of the year even if the charging situation where I travel was so bad I had to consider renting a vehicle for the couple of weeks a year I was on long road trips where charging might be an issue. Of course everyone's use case is different, but I think for most people that own their own houses and want a 3 row as a family vehicle/grocery getter/daily driver, possible charging issues on one or two or three long road trips a year should probably be pretty low on the list of downsides of EV ownership.
      Of course, there are people who buy HD pickups and daily them just so they'll have them the two times a year they move their boat in and out of the water. People don't always make sensible decisions. Or to put it more charitably I guess, everyone has their own priorities.
      My point was that I think reviewers tend to make public charging challenges much more of an issue in their assessments of EV ownership than they are for most people in most cases.
