Meet the all-new Kia EV9!
It’s a new super-imposing 7-seater from South Korea, and Mat’s about to find out if it can compete with class-leading all-electric SUVs like the Tesla Model X and BMW iX!
For starters, just check out that design! The EV9 is oh-so imposing, with a chunky, squared-off design stretching from the front to the rear. We love the blocky wheel arches and the new alloy designs - they’re definitely giving this car a real cyberpunk feel. The headlights & taillights also look great, and we love the black window surrounds & matching roof bars. The blue paint just tops it off, too!
Step inside and the EV9’s cabin is well laid out. There’s a big infotainment & digital dial screen, and thankfully there are several physical and haptic feedback buttons. Interior quality is ok, but if you reach down a bit low you can expect to find some scratchy plastics! Thankfully though we don’t mind as there’s loads of interior storage, and there’s even the option to go for a six-seat set-up in the back.
When it comes to batteries and motors, the entry-level EV9 come with a single electric motor that can produce 203hp. The GT Line edition that we have here comes with dual electric motors and the ability to put down 385hp. Both cars come with a 100kWh battery, and while the entry-level has a range of 350 miles, the GT Line can only manage 315.
So it all sounds great, but all this quality doesn’t come cheap! The EV9 starts from £65,000, rising up to £77,000 for the range-topper! So would you consider spending this much on a Kia? Stick with Mat to see if you should!

EV9 for me is 8.13/10.
So British yet not a smidge posh...absolute joy to watch and listen this channel!
I have the new Tesla Model 3 and I have to turn off my lane keeping assistant & speed limit warnings every time I get into the car. Since a lot of cars are like this I believe it must be some stupid EU regulation. I end up having to turn things off while I'm driving sometimes, which is dangerous as Matt pointed out. It completely ignores my driver profile...
MATT - the kia EV9 is Bloatware on 4 wheels , its a very CRAPPY vehicle.
MATT - High Tech SMART car is the ULTIMATE Luxury (TESLA).
Kia have a 7yr warranty…Range Rover have a seven minute one 😂
LMAO
Range rover be stolen in 5 minutes so it's well thought through 😂
An exaggeration of course. But what is fact, is that anything made by Land Rover seems to suddenly become an unreliable PIA after 3 years or so.. They're (in)famous for it....
😂 💯
@@stephen10. point is, rover is worse in every possible way lol
When Mat put his boots on the seats I died a little
Probably why they have scratchy bits lower down
He doesn't clean them, so he doesn't give a shit i guess.
Get a grip... Why does it matter to you?
for a baby seat?
It's just a KIA, nothing of value was lost
Wow. the rare BUY rec from Matt. Actually not surprised given the long list of things this SUV gets right.
4.9 seconds to 60mph on a rainy day is mental...such an impressive vehicle. Love everything about this. Excellent review as usual
my TT is faster than that so
@@EazyDuz18 Dumbest comment I've seen today...congrats!

@@dhruv0503EV so it doesn't count. You can glue batteries and motors on a 5 ton block of solid steel and it would still go 0-60 in 5 seconds
Boiling a kettle in the back of the car is the most British thing I've seen for a while... A missed opportunity for tea though
Saves you a fortune in costa and starbucks though. Id rather stop and make my own brew and save £3.50 each time.

After all it’s Korean , they like ramen noodles 🍜. Camping is a big thing in Korea
They have a kettle in the crew compartment of their Challenger 2 tanks too - wonder if that ability has been carried over to the 3
I love the rotating seats. It’s got that minivan level of practicality we lost when minivans became uncool.
There are videos online of the Kia carnival and people get confused and think it's an ultra luxury car because of the looks of the interior
The rotating seat in EV9 is also a neat touch. Wish the FIAT 600 Seicento also has rotating seat.
I used to love the rotating seats in my old Renault Espace
Minivans were cool🤔
Very stylish? You sure. Fugly you meant.
I drove one for 2 weeks on a press loan. Was blown away by the quality & real life range / speed. Not to mention the potential for being an on the go car tracking / video editing station.
Loved:
1) six seat configuration is fantastic
2) load area huge with seats down
3) super comfortable on long trips
4) looks beautiful on road
Annoyances:
1) the door handles were never extended when we wanted them, needed to keep unlocking to get to them
2) there’s SO many noises; beeps on road for safety systems, arrival music, vibrations on steering wheel. If you are easily over stimulated this car will enrage you.
3) I can’t afford it.
단점 대부분이 세팅변경 가능함 on/off
That last point is the key one like me you cant afford it!
For me it has way too much useless features that really don't solve anything we'd ever find an issue...like dropping the 3rd row seat from the front. When was there ever handy / a concern
£65k+ though, its not realistic for the majority of vehicle drivers and you know it. EV's are an expensive and resource draining fad, that are going to end up a massive white elephant soon.
And is shoe ugky as hell..😮
I enjoyed watching your review and thanks 👍🏽
Thank you, Matt and CarWow! Never been a KIA fan. However, from 02.01.2024, I've been a happy owner of precisely the same (as per the video) EV9 GT-Line in Matt Blue colour (except my second-row captain chairs are in relaxation mode, fully electric). I did 2000 km in one month, and every single one was packed with joy and excitement. It is just a pleasure to be in EV9. I'm from Finland, and January was the coldest in the past 8 years. Still, my average consumption is 28 kWh/100 km (that is 2.2 miles per kWh). And when it is at least +3, I'm getting 23 kW/100 km (2.7 miles per kWh). Would I recommend KIA? Definitely so!
Edit: Some comments were saying that there were better choices for money. Cars are very differently priced in different markets. As I said, I'm from Finland. I was looking for a big SUV EV. What Finnish market can (or just about to) offer?:
- Volvo EX90 - 119.000 EUR (110.000 EUR after all discounts) - 3 years or 100.000 km warranty (image Pixel LED or Air Suspension fix after warranty)
- Mercedes EQS 4MATIC (base price) - 132.000 EUR - 2 years or 100.00 km warranty
- Tesla Model X (non-Plaid), 6 seater, standard colours - 120.000 EUR (112.000 EUR after all discounts) - 4 years or 80.000 km warranty
I paid 89.000 EUR for KIA (Including winter 21" tyres with rims, towing hook, and all possible features). We are not getting the following features in Finland at all: 2nd-row massage, front grill lightning patterns, LiDAR, and digital side mirrors).
KIA has 7 years or 150.000 km warranty. The Navigation System and Audio Equipment have 3 year or 100.000 km warranty. The battery has a 7-year or 150.000 km warranty. Low-voltage battery (12V) is 2 years without a mileage limit.
Finland's average public charging (DC) price is 0.25 euros per kWh (based on KIA's charging curve, which is very stable for a long time). That is 6.25 EUR per 100 km (60 miles) based on 25 kWh consumption.
Home price (with all taxes and delivery) is 0.10 euros per kWh (in my case). That is 2.5 EUR per 100 km (60 miles) based on 25 kWh consumption.
The current fuel price is ~1.70 EUR per litre (E95).
So, in Finland - KIA EV9 is one of the best choices for money.
There was a lot better choices for the money, bro it’s a good car don’t get me wrong but for 70 there are much better options
@sam-zf7xd not in Finland. Here EV9 is a very financially wise choice

It's funnyhow body coloured mirrors denote base specification nowadays and black is higher specification. It was not that long ago it was the other way around.
Funny you mention that. Friend has a Porsche GT3. He thought my Evo 9 RS was the most expensive model cause it come from the factory strip down with no radio speakers or sound proofing. Black side mirrors also. My other friends’ 9 MR was fully loaded and almost twice the price😅
STUPID Black is the Stupid Fashion !
That’s marketing for ya. Let’s make the least expensive option for us, the most desirable 😅
That’s great that you picked that up…nice one!
I think a difference being, in the olden days, 'black' mirrors were simply unpainted... whereas now, they're actually painted black.
It’s “only” $75,000 (fully loaded) in the US. UK buyers are being ripped off.
It'll be less than that when no one buys it.
There's tax on top of that depending where you are though right?
@@geolykos in the UK, for all consumer goods the price advertised must be the price you pay, taxes included. It’s about time the US caught up.
@@ralphclark It's impossible for the US to "catch up" as every state has different taxes, including some with no taxes (DC, where I live, doesn't excise tax EVs). Saw it live at Brussels airport yesterday and have to say that this looks really good in person
It think it looks a bit too toy-ish and too blocky. But it does all fit together, style wise. But too big for European roads and parkings. And you know these will seat mostly one person 90% of the time. As a freelancer, I need some significant space for my gear, but I'd still prefer a car that is 10-15% smaller. Maybe the EV5, if the range - with smaller battery - doesn't suffer too much. Not sure if I could live with the alarms and notifications all the time, though. Disabling them every time I get in, would get very annoying fast.
It also has decent acceleration rate. On par with even the R35GTR. 0 to 60 in only 4.91 seconds.
I saw it in Athens, it's impressive!!!

My i4 defaults to having the lane assist on. Part of an EU safety thing. Fortunately, I've added it to the shortcuts, so it's only 2 clicks to turn off.
Yeah, you can do that in the EV9 too, makes it a little less annoying ;-)
I promise you he did not have to stand that close to the trunk for it to open like that 😂
That lane assist feature resetting itself is something to do with the Euro Ncap safety rating. I had the same issue with my wife's Lexus NX. Extremely annoying!
That’s a deal breaker for me.
Yep looks like all new cars have this feature :/
The EU made it mandatory. You Brits were so stupid to take it over.
Why make it so hard to turn off though. My civic has a button to the right of the steering wheel to switch that off. Cant be that hard to have a physical button in easy reach for that stuff!

7:48 that swivel is good if you have a toddler in the rear isofix, can feed them while on the move a lot easier than reaching over.
Rear facing is also safer for younger children in general. An upright seat rear facing maybe safer than forward facing, though don't quote me on that
@jcollishaw for babies your correct, but toddlers can't rear face buddy so that's what I was referring to
@@Slowjo369 yeah exactly! You can't normally rear face a toddler and this would allow for it all the time, not just whilst feeding.

Great Video Matt .... I moved from my BMW iX to the EV9 GTS 6 seat 2 weeks ago and I have not been disappointed at all ..... its a great all round luxury SUV .... Despite the badge snobs out there this is a game changer for KIA at this end of the market ... I miss nothing about the BMW and the extra seat and boot space are perfect. One comment on the range ... Its looking like 230 miles in the cold, wet and windy conditions is about spot on right now .... I expect when the weather improves it will get us back up to closer to 300 miles .... But my iX 40 was only getting about 180 miles this time last year in similar conditions so I am still pretty happy .
Wow! iX and EV9 in the same sentence from an owner of both - an accolade in deed!
If you had to comment on the difference in ride comfort?
Very curious about the ride comfort. Especially with the air suspension having ix xdrive50 version..
@@Antiguan_Dart Well the iX40 doesnt come as standard with Air suspension either so the ride and handling are very similar .... I will say that the Kia feels a bit quicker that the iX but the driver aids are more intrusive.
I also drove the iX50 with the air suspension and it was not a significantly better experience .... and the extra cost for the iX50 was not worth it at all
The UK must have a massively more optimistic standard for estimating range than the US. In the US the same spec GT-Line has an estimated range of of 270 miles. Which is far more realistic than 330 for the AWD with a 99kwh battery.
@@jasonstewart764 I think it will be lucky to ever see the other side of 300 in the Dual motor spec ... But having averaged around 220 in the BMW I will be pretty happy around the 270-290 range in the summer and 220 in the winter cold and rain
Love it. Too big for the city in many scenarios? Is there *enough storage space for e-scooters* + charging?
Parked my Audi E-tron next to an EV9 in a parking gararage yesterday and the E-tron looked small in comparison. Parking the EV9 will be a challenge outside of North America where parking spaces are huge.

A real benefit of those captain chairs is to be able to have a regular ‘forward’ facing car seat be transformed into a much safer ‘rear’ facing seat, simply by swivelling the seat. Genius!
Great way to transport the younger children who are too big for a rear facing car seat!
Great way to make it not function as designed in a crash!
That's all I could think. Safe car riding for longer! Love this feature.

@7:17 - I could see that being very useful for a car seat for infants. You want them to be facing backwards and with this, you can put the car seat in facing forwards and just spin the seat. Makes getting the seat in easier and makes getting the infant into and out of the seat easier.

FYI, you can turn LFA and LKA off or on with 2 buttons on the steering wheel; you don't need to use the touchscreen. The Kia EV6 does this and I use it regularly with the simple press of two buttons on the left side of the steering controls, depending on what I want to turn on or off.
Same on my Sportage
I have an EV6. Can you link seat placement to the key. When I use the car after my wife (even with my key) have to change profile manually.
@@MrTinkx the seat position can be saved in 2 ways: The basic setting is the seat memory buttons on the door. There are 2 buttons for 2 positions. You could use 1 for you and 1 for the other person. What I prefer to do is to use both buttons for my 2 preferred seating positions; I created a second user profile for my wife, via the touchscreen, and because the seat memory buttons are linked to the user profile, she has her 2 preferred seating positions saved in the buttons. The user profile saves everything from interface language, to radio stations and accent lighting colour. I hope this makes sense, I have not made a video about it yet.

Kia tech is pretty great to live with on a daily basis. Having driven a K5 GT Line (midsize sedan) for over a year now my only complaints are the lackluster standard brakes and the trim level differences (no Bose on GT Line?) The infotainment is great and absolutely luxury car competitive.

11:05 that editing is on point!
Good to see Matt doesn't kerb the wheels, but also isn't bothered about cutting off the Citroen C1 at the junction. 🤣
Can one flip fold or remove the other pair of seats too ?
So it becomes a proper station wagon ?
We only need two seets and a motherload of storage space
Hey, great idea but sadly no, that's not a feature
I'm actually impressed Mat still has his 996 after all these years.
The brake sound when creeping forward is the parking brake disengaging with an electric motor. It has an “auto hold” function where you can take your foot off the brake while stopping in traffic. It holds the car with the parking brake.
Love that feature on my 2024 Seltos SX. It’s a safety feature and also makes driving easier in the feet
Hey. Its actually to warn people around that the car is moving. I work for Kia. Its not coming from the brakes, there are external speakers around that area
Do you know where they store the fingerpint or all personal data?
What happens in the winter when the handles are frozen and won’t pop out?
I hate to say this because I love Mat and watch every single video on carwow (drag race or not) : those glasses make him look like a serial killer from an American bad movie 😅
Not a fan of EV6 design, but this EV9 looks reaaaaally good - excellent job, KIA.
i think completely the opposite lol
Looks like cancer
Nope... Looks like a 5 year-old with a crayon had a hand in the design...
@@rolands50 you’re thinking of Tesla. No but seriously, design is very subjective, I like the details and thoughtful approach to function that Kia has got going here but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.
Its revolting 🤮
Always great to hear your dulcet tones Matt as a fellow Midlander now living in Kent don't miss Redditch though LOL
I hate SUVs (I like actual CARS, and with manual transmissions), but that thing looks fantastic - especially in that matte blue. KIA is going from strength-to-strengh in styling (and value?).
One day you might actually require some practicality, there's no way I'm ever buying a sedan again, wagons are so rare and it's basically wagon or SUV/CUV as the only choices. There's no point compromising on one car which doesn't do anything well (sedan), if I'm ever rich enough I'd have a practical vehicle and a two door fun one
@@cenciende9401 Minivans are far more practical and efficient than SUVs. And I LIKE minivans.
Man Kia is killing it with these designs.
They’re also killing it with battery fires
Not so much with the prices though
Designs are the worst in my opinion
@@christophe9602 Not so much? Then why it costs 40 grand to change the battery on any Kia ev..on the EV9 a new battery pack is £52k
@@christophe9602 : >> Not so much with the prices though
