The great thing about Thomas and James is that they seem like regular guys. Its also amazing that I would actually watch a video of two guys sitting on a couch talking about cars, says a lot…..
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I wish I could sit down with you guys and just blabber and debate about cars all day long. James, please don't ever get rid of the Miata. I did, and I regret it...
Loved this content. It was PEAK car guy. Had me pausing and searching and guessing your picks before you said them. Excellent choices, gents. Well done!
I mean this in all seriousness. you 2 need your own car show WITH your entire team. your reviews are always spot on and honest. The comedy you 2 bring is always well placed. The Edits give me nostalgia vibes from classic top gear. Its Cinematic, well put together, with just enough messing around. I got through this entire video thinking is was like 15 minutes. It went by so fast!
I have an m235i in a similar blue with red interior. Got it lightly used in place of a model 3 performance and man, despite the model 3 technically being faster, I do not regret that decision. Such an amazingly fun car to drive.
The quality shows. I consume so much RUclips and James and Thomas are up top with Mark and Jack. No one else even comes close to these four guys and I greatly appreciate the work and effort.
I'm very fortunate to have found a terrific, affordable car in my Lexus GS430 3rd-gen. Comfy, crazy reliable, and enough driving dynamics to make my commute entertaining. That said, there is serious magic in dreaming of the 2022 BRZ/GR86, wondering what it's like to rip that little sucker to work.
As an ND owner, I very much struggle with an upgrade path as well. Which partly comes from not having enough funds to spend triple the price on something else. Loved this discussion!
There is no upgrade path from a miata ND its peak fun for twisty roads only thing better is a air cooled 80's 911. Unless ur a heavy track guy, any car u replace the ND with will dissapoint no matter how much it costs. Thats why u should probably add a car instead of replace the ND
The shortest 44 minutes on RUclips. James, what happened to the “I tried to make it last longer” (or something similar to that)? We-Want-More! Silly comment aside, greetings from Greece! You make exceptional videos - be that “extra” or not - which are definitely a Must-Watch. Wish lists are a beloved game, dating back to childhood. Since men remain children, wish lists go on forever! Now, I am more of a rider than a driver (I love cars but only had one, so far), but there are no less than a dozen of cars I would love to have. Down-to-earth personal Top3 would be: i20N, Type-R and Giulia Veloce. If I had to…survive my wife’s nagging, the Top3 would probably be: Jazz, 308 and XC40. Until then, long live my 2004…Panda!
Hi my Greece brother! If time is not come for dream car and you want to change Panda you should try Suzuki Ignis. I bought one and it's so fun, even driving slow speeds. And it's practical, my wife likes it too.
@@TenSapphires Well…were I on the lookout for such a small car, Ignis would definitely be my pick. I have liked it ever since it came out and still has the edge over all other cars in its class!
Ya bro - I flew through this with 2 glasses of scotch and it was one of the best things I've listened to in months. You're car content is unmatched on youtube - but I'd listen to you guys talking about cars for hours. Congrats on all you've EARNED, and keep up the awesome content.
I could definitely go for more of these videos every so often. I have a long commute, it's nice to be able to listen to this like a podcast. Plus, it's nice to hear you guys get to talk in a less structured forum
One of the many things I really love about Thomas and James is that they are real, normal, down-to-earth, gearheads. Thomas races in Lucky Dog, for example, which is one of the best, affordable, grass roots amateur series (which I participate in). There is no exotic hypercar crap in their garages nor in their dreams, unlike many RUclipsrs. They drive and dream about mostly attainable stuff that most of us would be considering. Very relatable. Great series, guys and most excellent video.
Well I have a Volvo 850 Wagon and the only car I want more than mine is the 850 R Wagon :D And the 850 was the reason why I found your main RUclips Channel. Back then Thomas made a review of the 850 as a winter beater. Love you guys keep it up
😂 “i really want that” “the steering lacks…” “doesn’t matter, i really want that.” This was me finding my now owned 2023 BMW M240 RWD. I’m love her and it was all so unexpected. I still have my 2006 Evo IX that is my baby, but I needed something I could share with the wife that was still a beast. Thank you for this content. I enjoy watching genuine dialog between people with experience. The practicality of your choices is both refreshing and reassuring that true car enthusiasts search for something beyond just the body and specs.
Yeah yeah the cars are cool but the T-Rex skull and the golden record from the Voyager behind you are sick! I want those. Also, I see that vibrator charging in the background there :)
Maybe the best Extra to date. Great combination of information and entertainment. Call it infotainment. Hey, I just made up a new word. Seriously, this is like a conversation some car guys might have over a couple of beers.
My car guy friends and I often have this conversation over a couple of beers. We all have different tastes and different goals, and it's fun to see where this takes them. It's also really fun when your friend picks something that makes you reconsider your own decision, like James did with the E63S. Anyways, I highly recommend doing this with your friends. Carve out some time, grab some brews, and chop it up. You won't regret it. Cheers!
I'm with James on the restomod dream car, there's nothing like a well executed blend of classic, soulful style and modern engineering. My dream car is MZR Roadsports' Datsun 240Z and it's even got a dream car pricetag. There's nothing I want more, which is going to be tough news for my kid. Anyone know what a white baby goes for these days?
Mine is a GT3 RS. My second though is a Shelby Daytona Coupe. The company that does the parts for the Cobra that Thomas and James drove in an episode does the parts for the Daytona Coupe so you can do your own.
@First Last nice. only raptor ive been in was the one my dad got while his mustang was getting fixed up. they’re nice asl. if i were to get a truck i’d prolly go with something crazy and get a super snake
Thomas, you own exactly the cars I would own, if I could afford them. From my perspective, great taste in cars, kudos sir! I have been watching since the E46 DIY stuff and it's unbelievable the progress made since those days! Congrats and looking forward to future content!
I’m totally with James. Even though I haven’t actually driven all of the cars you guys have, no new car really draws any awe from me. Maybe a 911 Turbo 4s for a daily? A Singer for some classic enjoyment? Currently own my childhood dream car (a mint 2 door manual Jeep Wrangler) that I’ll have until the day I die, but I truly want a sports car. I have the jeep for nice weather, a work truck for work, my wife has an suv for road trips.. I need something completely impractical. And a bigger garage.
Love the attitude of these guys.... not trying to be funny, they just are.... and it feels like having a chat with your next door neighbour over a beer. Bravo. Keep going
12:41 This really struck a chord. Even with just two "fun" cars, I feel terrible letting one sit, so I combined both into one single car. I might get a boring dedicated daily to go alongside it, but never >1 fun car again unless it's a dedicated track-only car.
I would love a second car, just can't justify the expensive of a car that just sits most of the time. Picked up a cheap, 20 year old motorcycle instead. Less guilt with the super low price tag and super cheap insurance.
Yes Caterham. Thank you for finally bringing them into Throttle House canon. Only driven one once for a short time but it gets under your skin. I firmly believe for visceral driving experience no one does a roadster like the British. The only one I consider more than caterham would be a Morgan
@@nogbadthebad6294 👍🏼unfortunately we don't see many in Canada. Caterhams are a little easier to come by (for sale) and would likely have more track appeal
Loved the video Especially because you mentioned cars that I had the chance to interact with either as a beautiful childhood memory (Mercedes-Benz 190 2.3 16) or on my top 10 of "I want it!" (E63S and Cayman)
I kept my '92 NA Miata and added a Boxster Spyder. I love them both but I cant say the Spyder is multiple X's better than the Miata. Faster, yes, corners better, sounds better, but overall I still will never give up the Miata. Do not get rid of your Miata
I was thoroughly entertained listening to the discussion for 45 minutes, and it feels like you guys discuss your real enthusiast feelings in a very honest, transparent way that doesn't feel intimidating. Your environment feels very inviting and warm for enthusiasts to sit down and talk about cars and makes me want to have something like that in my life. Also, James put down a deposit on the Lotus Emira, or so he told us in a later video, so feels like he was already contemplating this choice for a while... Organic content. Love you guys (as automotive journalists and vloggers, obviously).
In late 2021 I finally attained my dream car- an F80 M3. Sure there are other nicer cars that I would love to have, but I think it’s very similar to what James said about diminishing returns, and working yourself to death to get the “next/newer/nicer” car. The F80 is already a very expensive car to me (especially in this current climate where everything has went up in price). I think I’m at the top of what I think is reasonable for myself- especially considering I’m not a good enough driver to even take full advantage of what the M3 can do. If anything, I need to spend money on some track lessons before considering a “faster” car. P.S. - you guys need to do a video on the F80. You’ve done every other M3. Compare the new G80 to the F80 like you did with the cheapest E9x vs G80 video. Would love to see that. Keep up the great work!
Same here with my Lexus GS F. A lot faster more capable performance sedans out there but this one is special in its own ways. Too bad these guys never tested it either and instead did the RCF.
@@alalal123421 absolutely is. I’d love to hear why not. Just because it’s not as fast doesn’t mean it’s not in the same caliber. More rare, more expensive, and more exclusive.
@@alalal123421 it is true, it’s not an M3. It’s better. More rare. Wayyyy more reliable. Better interior. Better engine ten fold. N/A V8 vs hot turbo I6? Come on now.
I really liked this segment. It's interesting to see what guys who review/drive cars for a living have in their own garages. I also enjoy the vibe between the two of you that makes it real and engaging. Great work on this and on the main site. Thanks.
I really enjoyed the discussion and it’s obvious you two are not snobby or pretentious at all. I currently drive an M340i and my aspirational car is a Taycan.
12:36 YES! Lifelong car enthusiast here. My wife and I did the sports car as 3rd car thing (briefly 4 at a time). Always dreamed of that as a kid. Guess what... it's a HASSLE, and you don't enjoy it properly - like what Thomas found with his E46. We have 1 car now, and it's amazing (Lyft/Uber are great)! 100% convinced we'll always have 1 or 2 vehicles at a time - no more. Alfaholics is one of my 2 dream vehicles! Official dream garage: Rivian R1T and Alfaholics GTA-R Widebody
Owned an ND1 MX5 for 4 years then changed to a 2018 Elise. Absolutely loved the MX5 but the Elise really turns it up several notches. Now own a 250 cup, if it’s a second or third car an Elise is a definite joy and upgrade. I have the fortune of using it as a daily driver and it’s definitely made me question my sanity more than a couple of times. Once the weather clears up, and I’m driving on one of the two roads without potholes everything makes sense again
Thank you for the memory to start this off. I owned a 69 Alfa Spider with SPICA and loved it. Traded it in when I was in the Navy for something with more room to carry stuff when going from duty station to duty station. I have yet to live down that mistake. Before I die, I hope to own another Alfa Spider...
Sounds like James wants a Alpine a110, it is basically a blend between a Miata and a Porsche gt4. Here in Europe the Alpine a110 is considered a superior car to the Porsche (according to reviews) and best of all, it is less expensive, but i'm not shure if it is avalible in the US or Canada. (Please be considerate of my spelling, not a native english speaker)
I am sitting here eating my boiled eggs, bagel, and cream cheese while drinking my coffee; watching this. All while procrastinating going to work. I am self-employed. However, I have better things to do than watching two guys chat on a couch about awesome cars. Buuuutttt, I'd rather watch guys sit on a couch and talk about awesome cars.😁 Great job, guys. Love your videos.
This video was just a delight. You both come across as such personable, fun guys who just love cars. Especially enjoyed James's explanation of his plate on the Miata, such a cool reason for a custom plate. Keep up the fantastic work, look forward to more videos of you two just talking about cars!
I 1000% agree with you, the 190E 2.3 Evolution is not only one of the best looking cars ever and is definitely in my top five. I can just imagine modern engine tech on the 2.3 cossworth, 9k rpm, ITB’s, cf body panels, doors, hood, trunk, modern ignition system, newer lighter wheels and especially modern high performance tires. Talk about a car worth restomod. You should restomod your 190E into a 2.3 E, swap in a Honda K24, cam and valve train to hit that sweet 10k rpm, or turbo it. Not sure how strong the factory trans is but there are plenty out there to drop in.
Just want to say thanks for the content guys. This year I got a failed spinal fusion and cancer from all the x rays n scans and then my car blew up and had to get rid of it. And hard to find a dec sports car on disability. Your content keeps my spirits up and hope to see you dudes around the streets of the GTA to get some merch autographed and a pic. Oh maybe a test between Genesis G70 v Infiniti Q60s 🤙👍🤙👍🤙
Keep your spirits up friend. In 2010 I lost half of my right leg to an IED in Afghanistan and sold a motorcycle and a manual trans car I had at the time. Deep depression afterward, but keeping a positive mental attitude is paramount. I too want to meet the guys, but I want them to autograph my chest…..it’s a rock concert thing.
@@gouldnj thank you for your service sir. Seems like you have to really appreciate driving something that puts a smile on your face and be quite a physical person to understand how stressful it can be.
Honestly can empathize with James, I've yet to find a dream car to aspire to. I have plenty of cars I'd like to own, but nothing that screams "Its my life goal to get this car"
3:20 i would love to see an extra throttle house road trip debrief on this channel! talk is through the process of keeping a $50,000 CAD AE86 and full restoring the beams engine. tell us what’s next for the volkswagon rabbit gti, maybe a supercharger is in order to keep parity with the 86? Thomas did mention in episode 1 of the road trip that his rabbit didn’t really have *that* special of an engine (unlike his current Alfa Romeos featured here). 3:20 man his spaghetti’s itb’s sound amazing!
As a French guy, may I suggest an intermediate price alternative between the Miata and Elise, which would be the Alpine A110 or its GT version for a little more comfort ? It’s light and playful as well. Doesn’t come as a convertible though. And I guess those are quite difficult to find in Canada and the US too 😅 And there’s probably a cost to import them too… Oh well. It was just an idea :)
Love the fireside chat format fellas. My take, I love the C8 for the bandwidth it provides as a GT with a top off, comfortable ride and lots of space. But then it can also handle track days and is quite happy there (albeit with a couple upgrades if you decide to dive deeper). Its my pick in my two car strategy, the daily being a Cadillac ATS 6MT w/LSD, tuned the car is amazing and I love that Alpha chassis. Both cars I couldnt be happier with, great to hear your takes on it all. Keep er up!
I've loved you guys for a couple of years now. Hilarious...down to earth...intelligent...spot on with your reviews and assessments and balance. But James naming his MX-5 in honor of Carl Sagan...your stock just jumped to the top of the car journalist heap. It almost...almost makes me want to trade in my BRZ for the MX-5. If I only liked...at all...convertibles.
You guys need to check out a channel called Homebuilt by Jeff - he's building an Alfa 105 with a Ferrari 360 V8 - forget about the GTA-R. Another great episode fellas, can't think of two other guys i'd listen to for 44 mins without skipping! 👍👍👍
You guys did a really nice job explaining the different driving and usefulness features. I have 5 vehicles, and I am mowing over getting rid of them all, and replacing with an Emira and Raptor Bronco. A few of my cars will be difficult to get rid of due to their level of customization, but I really would love to dwindle down to just the 2 I mentioned. The Bronco ticks the convertible box…
Something I like the bronco for with that removable roof box is it does what a wrangler does without the abysmal crash rating and rollover potential (well a bit better rollover). Maybe it’s just cuz I happen to have a few friends who are really into jeep circles but I know way to many people who have flipped or rolled their jeeps. I literally just took a pic and of one Friday rolled in the middle of an intersection from making a u turn and a pickup tapped its rear tire accidentally
As someone who had a 2018 S4, I would totally agree that the seats in that car are amazing. I would also hard sell the electronic dampers, they are amazing. Love that you can change the character of the car with a couple button presses.
Excellent conversation! I’m currently in a 2020 WRX premium and heavily contemplating what my next jump up will be. M2 has been on the radar for a long time, but this new lotus makes me feel funny in the pants lol. Unfortunately driving them both and then deciding will likely not happen.
Lotus would likely cost the same as a properly loaded cayman GTS 4.0 or a GT4. It’s just like buying a corvette in the UK but in reverse. I was shopping between the new g80 m3 xdrive, lotus evora, and cayman gts 4.0. In the end the Porsche made a lot more sense to me purely from a price perspective and went with it (still waiting for my allocation).

Can we get an extended cut of this? I could listen to you guys talk cars for hours. Maybe a podcast???
Bruhh they should start podcasting
I think this video is an excellent example that there should be an Extra, Extra Throttle House podcast
My first car was an 86 944, I wish I still had it. It was so fun, handled so fantastically!
Loved this content. It was PEAK car guy. Had me pausing and searching and guessing your picks before you said them. Excellent choices, gents. Well done!
5:01 thank you for sharing this story and great piece of poetry james. i hadn’t heard of the pale blue dot until this
The "some youtubers can afford a GT" reference was not lost
I mean this in all seriousness. you 2 need your own car show WITH your entire team. your reviews are always spot on and honest. The comedy you 2 bring is always well placed. The Edits give me nostalgia vibes from classic top gear. Its Cinematic, well put together, with just enough messing around.
I got through this entire video thinking is was like 15 minutes. It went by so fast!
Ive been wanting a vid like this forever. Could listen to u two talking cars for an hour
Carmudgeon-grade chemistry and brilliance. Cammisa and "The Hyphen" Tam-Scott would be proud. I love this so much. Thank you and please do more.
I think Cammisa and James would have legendary chemistry
I have a 2jz swapped 190e and Thomas is right its surprisingly well balanced and really easy to swing the tail out and control it .
Wow sounds like a pretty cool swap, haven't heard of anything like it.
I have an m235i in a similar blue with red interior. Got it lightly used in place of a model 3 performance and man, despite the model 3 technically being faster, I do not regret that decision. Such an amazingly fun car to drive.
Kudos to you guys for hiring a team and spreading the wealth. Rather have 10 friends in a $50,000 whips then my one half mill car for my self.
Ditto
The quality shows. I consume so much RUclips and James and Thomas are up top with Mark and Jack. No one else even comes close to these four guys and I greatly appreciate the work and effort.

@@justinl5747 oh I do, and listen to his podcast. I guess I just think of him as being in a different category.
Bro, the GS F is where it’s at.
@@AnontheGOAT Oh I know. It's just that GSFs cost over five times what I paid for my 430 so it's gonna take a while to save up 🤣
@@dawnpoint ya sucks they are so pricey. Mostly due to how little of them there are.
As an ND owner, I very much struggle with an upgrade path as well. Which partly comes from not having enough funds to spend triple the price on something else. Loved this discussion!
Lotus? Like a used Evora? Unless you’re really into the interior quality of Mazda
There is no upgrade path from a miata ND its peak fun for twisty roads only thing better is a air cooled 80's 911. Unless ur a heavy track guy, any car u replace the ND with will dissapoint no matter how much it costs. Thats why u should probably add a car instead of replace the ND
Lotus is not an upgrade path for ownership. You will find it impossible to find parts for long term and avoid driving it, unlike Miata.
“Pale blue Dot” brought a tear to my eye!
Now, I am more of a rider than a driver (I love cars but only had one, so far),
but there are no less than a dozen of cars I would love to have.
Down-to-earth personal Top3 would be: i20N, Type-R and Giulia Veloce.
If I had to…survive my wife’s nagging, the Top3 would probably be: Jazz, 308 and XC40.
Until then, long live my 2004…Panda!
i didnt realize it was 44 minutes until i read this comment

Well I have a Volvo 850 Wagon and the only car I want more than mine is the 850 R Wagon :D
And the 850 was the reason why I found your main RUclips Channel. Back then Thomas made a review of the 850 as a winter beater. Love you guys keep it up
I wonder whether the winter beater episode was my first one too, and also because I owned a 850! 💪😁

James....sounds like you had your 4 year adventure with the Lotus in all of about 2 minutes and your back with your Miata...welcome back!
People generally don’t come back to an mx5 after owning a lotus.
@@ChapHammersmith True...those two are vastly different when it comes to performance, but unfortunately, reliability as well.
Thomas, you own exactly the cars I would own, if I could afford them. From my perspective, great taste in cars, kudos sir! I have been watching since the E46 DIY stuff and it's unbelievable the progress made since those days! Congrats and looking forward to future content!
Thanks!
2013 Audi RS5!! james loved it i wish he got one :(
@@alalal123421 that thing sounded mean. I’d take one as well!
Hell ya. I just went with the E63s. Love it as a daily. Absolute blast even in Saskatchewan winters.
Yes Caterham. Thank you for finally bringing them into Throttle House canon. Only driven one once for a short time but it gets under your skin. I firmly believe for visceral driving experience no one does a roadster like the British. The only one I consider more than caterham would be a Morgan
Yes! A Morgan. Thought exactly the same.
@@nogbadthebad6294 👍🏼unfortunately we don't see many in Canada. Caterhams are a little easier to come by (for sale) and would likely have more track appeal
Loved the video
Especially because you mentioned cars that I had the chance to interact with either as a beautiful childhood memory (Mercedes-Benz 190 2.3 16) or on my top 10 of "I want it!" (E63S and Cayman)
I kept my '92 NA Miata and added a Boxster Spyder. I love them both but I cant say the Spyder is multiple X's better than the Miata. Faster, yes, corners better, sounds better, but overall I still will never give up the Miata. Do not get rid of your Miata
Had a 1983 190e 2.6 with a Cosworth body kit. Loved that car.
Big fan of your channel guys, from Botswana. Keep up the good work👍
I was thoroughly entertained listening to the discussion for 45 minutes, and it feels like you guys discuss your real enthusiast feelings in a very honest, transparent way that doesn't feel intimidating.

I really liked this segment. It's interesting to see what guys who review/drive cars for a living have in their own garages. I also enjoy the vibe between the two of you that makes it real and engaging. Great work on this and on the main site. Thanks.
I love how Thomas brought up the 2.3-16 because it deserves more recognition, but also wish he didn’t because i wanna snag one before prices go up.

I really enjoyed the discussion and it’s obvious you two are not snobby or pretentious at all.
I currently drive an M340i and my aspirational car is a Taycan.
A Lotus can be a nice replacement for the Miata. They are very fun cars and I think they cost less than a 718 spider.
its next best because we dont get the Alpine a110 here in NA
Question for James, what about an S2000? High revving, roadster, relatively light and not stupidly expensive yet.
Plus slightly more masculine than a Miata
@@BongRipsForDayz If you're buying a car based on masculinity, you're doing it completely wrong
James just added another layer of likability with that Pale Blue Dot reference.
Totally 100% agree. As a huge fan of Carl Sagan myself, glad someone else noticed.
this channel is drifting closer and closer to podcast territory and I love it
Owned an ND1 MX5 for 4 years then changed to a 2018 Elise.
I feel a spiritual connection to James.
Fun car is a modded Fiesta ST. Daily is an Audi Q3.
Unfortunately the Alpine a110 is not available the US or Canada.
@@bolt5564 Well that’s sad, otherwise it sounded like it ticked all the boxes James had for the perfect Miata replacement. Wouldn’t you agree?

This video was just a delight. You both come across as such personable, fun guys who just love cars. Especially enjoyed James's explanation of his plate on the Miata, such a cool reason for a custom plate. Keep up the fantastic work, look forward to more videos of you two just talking about cars!
What a great conversation - cars mixed with real life. Thanks guys!
Love the format ! Please, in your busy schedule, do more of these too :D
James' Miata is gorgeous and I love it. Also I'm pretty sure those rims are up there for the most beautiful factory rims of the past twenty years.
Keep er up!

Ohhhhhhhhh. The pale blue dot reference knocked it out of the park.
I've loved you guys for a couple of years now. Hilarious...down to earth...intelligent...spot on with your reviews and assessments and balance. This should be a podcast. The long form discussions are way better in that format.
On the note of base cars. The upper trim levels of the Corolla isn't much more and does give you a significantly better infotainment setup.
@@k.w5804 So I am here in Tennessee, Corvettes and Porsche‘s are literally everywhere. But Lotus are very rare. It just checks all of the boxes for me.
