I bought my first G-Shock in January of 1991 as I was being deployed during Desert Storm. I used it daily for 14 years, at which point I bought a new one, just to get some new features.
The first G-Shock ran about 18 years on the original battery, when it started losing time. The battery didn't die until it was just over 21 years old. I was utterly impressed.
Once a week I would throw it in the autoclave at work. It took it like a champ. Working in a hospital requires a clean watch.

If you are thinking about the GWM5610, I recommend the GWM5610U. The GWM5610U has a LED light; it shows the current time while using the stopwatch, world time, and timer; there are five world times (versus one); the date format can be changed; the language of the day of the week can be changed; and you can set the light for a three second duration.

I grab a watch during a PX run on my Basic Training in the Army. 8 years later, after 2 deployment and 5 change of duty stations, I still have it. Change the battery a year ago, slap on a bull bar. still alive and functioning. Durability unbeatable. Perfect watch in my opinion. No need to recharge the battery every 6 hrs. $40 well spent on this Casio g shock dw5600.

I LOVE this watch (and am going to order it).. I have the 5600-e now.. and love this too. I do want to point out, that while there is no doubt this (5610) is the nicer watch, there are features on the lesser 5600 that are far better and make more sense for practical daily use. Things like being able to see the time while in timer mode or stop watch. Or, the fact that I can not set a timer for less than 1-min, (like I can on the 5600). This is a problem for me when in the gym, counting my stretch and rest times. (again, practical use at play here). So, in that case the 5600 is much nicer to use. I also use the repet timer while at my desk all day to remind me to stand and stretch. Love this. and this is also not possible on the 5610. So, its annoying that the nicer watch has less practical features, or at the least a trade off of solar / atomic / world time for things that I think more people will use more often.

I have the GWM5610 and it's the perfect G-Shock for my puny wrist. Just yesterday I met a friend who was wearing the exact same model, and it was cool seeing that mine and his were both on the same exact time to the second. Yay for atomic clocks! Such a great carefree watch, the auto-light is a cool feature as well. I also use it to set my automatics, doesn't get any more accurate.

The atomic model does not serve me where I live, there is no antenna and without going any further in world time Buenos Aires my city does not appear on the list, a bad point for almost all, as well as the excessive and unjustified price for my use.
The automatic light also works in the replaceable battery model, which by the way is the most common and cheap battery model, it is a great advantage, it lasts about 5 years, I had several g shocks and this is the best and most comfortable model to my liking. Flash function with time signal, timer, chrono and alarm is a very important function for me
My favorite is the DW 5600, it is the one I use and the other G Shock I have sold because it does not make sense for me to have watches in a drawer, I only need one, this one.
Casio is the best by far of all the brands.

The DW5600 used a CR2016 battery cell, capacity of 90mah @ 3V, the power wattage is little low compared to the non G shock Casio watch that used CR2032; a 240mah @ 3V that has 10 battery logo, lasted for 10 yrs, then no need to worry about the charging of the tiny Solar battery; 18mah @ 2.3V, saved $100 bucks and buy 5 more Casio 10 year watches for spare.

Great review.I have just bought a used GWM560 for work, a superb piece of kit. The 5600 is an official watch for NASA, just like the Omega Moonwatch, also, the 5600 still displays the time whilst the stopwatch is on, which is a cool feature the 5610 does not. Apart from that, the atomic solar one is the better bet. Interestingly, the 5610 graphics are based on the first g shock, the DW5000 and the graphics on the 5600 are based on the follow up, the hero, which was used in that hockey video……..I bought the hero in 1984 with my hard earned cash at £45, a lot of money then and I still have it and it works perfectly; they change hands for some $300 these days, an awesome built watch.

There are iOS and Android apps that can emulate the radio time signal stations and set these Casios via an NTP time server. Clock Wave app for iOS is my favorite. So even if they were to be shut off, or if you are out of range, your multi-band Casio is still good to go.

I have the tough solar and the non solar versions. I also have other Casio models with tough solar and a Seiko solar. NO denying that it has its advantage of lasting 10 years before a battery swap. However, when wearing the watches in a cycle, it makes little to no difference. The standard model without solar will anyway last 8 years and be ready every second along the journey. Whereas the tough solar has the possibility of losing charge when you really want it - I'm aware owners keep it charged most of the time and don't let it sit for 10 months in the dark but the advantage is nothing more than the extra two years before a battery swap. The extra two years mean nothing during ownership period, just change the battery like you refuel your vehicle and move on, nobody bothers. Conversely, you have to check the battery reserve now and then on the solars, or wear them/take them out to light compulsively just because you bought it and dont want it to lose charge. Multi band actually doesn't add any value in day to day usage unless youre an athelete or work in ultra time sensitive jobs. So save the extra 50 bucks and spend it on another G shock to add to your wardrobe! G's actual USP is its street style so save as much and stock more! The non solar versions actually have more features than you will ever need and so its not a compromise in any form.

One of my biggest pet peeves with the G Shock line is so many of the modules have countdown timers that don't allow the user to set the seconds. I have found the GD 350 line to be the most funtional module yet. The time of day is displayed through the various functions, the user can set the seconds for the countdown timer and the countdown timer can be started from the home screen.

I've had my DW-5600 for 20+ years. It's been my dependable watch for hiking, swimming, kayaking, surfing, and traveling to foreign countries. A CASIO DW-5600 isn't a high value $$$ target for street muggers. Over the past 20+ years, the only thing that I've needed to replace is the watchband (always get a genuine CASIO watchband; and not a knock-off) and battery. I always get my battery replaced at a watch repair shop so the gasket can be pressured checked for leakage. Even though the cost of replacing the watchband and the battery is about the same cost as a new CASIO DW-5600, I still end up replacing the band and the battery. I've also been told that my current DW-5600 is only date programmed up to 2024 or 2026 (e.g., leap year) so I might have to buy a new one. HINT: If the backlight on your DW5600 does not work or is dim, that's your first clue that you need to soon replace the battery. The watch will work fine until the battery completely drains out.

Truth is if everyone had a G shock in their collection they would not need a collection , it really is the ultimate beater and all the watch you'd ever need . trust me I have had dozens of watches in my life and have around 10 now , some are high end Rolex etc , but I've come full circle and now wear almost exclusively my G Shock full metal ( GMW-B5000D-1ER ) it does everything I want and more , meantime two rolexes and a couple of very nice Omegas sit laying in my draw never worn for over three years now , and I am so over expensive watches now . My wrist was too big for my 5610, the narrower case caused the strap to pinch and skew the watch to one side. I ended up putting a different style of G-shock strap on it, that had a wider stance. The same strap that the G-lide uses. The 5600 fits perfectly out of the box. Other than the fit and case shape, of course the 5610 is better.

There's an app if anyone is curious, were if you cant recieve a signal to sync the watch, if you have reception on your phone, you place the watch by the speaker and start the app as the speaker acts like an antenna for the watch. Nifty if your're in a pinch and want dead on accuracy.

I bought two and sent them both back, I thought the first one may have been a bit faulty but the second confirmed that the alarm sound on the 5610U is practically inaudible.
I thought I would give the G-Shock square one more chance in the form of the battery powered 5600E, what a revelation I can hear it just as loud as my cheaper standard Casio models.
Why do G-Shock continually bother with multiple inaudible alarms!
If you don't mind a standard Casio you could try the WV-200R-5ACF, it doesn't claim to be as tough but it has a glass window, 200m water resistance and is multiband5 and you can hear it's alarm and time sounds and it's a similar price to the 5600E but it's not square.

One downside to the DW-5600 is the recessed 'A' (top left) button. Used for settings mode but also, crucially for resetting the stopwatch. Very difficult to operate. The GW-M5610 circumvents this problem by having a long push to enter settings mode (so no need for recessed pusher).

If you need to hear the alarm/ timer function please don't buy the 5610U as there is no point in having a choice of 5 inaudible alarms. The 1 audible alarm and timer is enough for me on the 5600E and I will deal with changing the battery when needed.

The GWM-5610 as we are all aware is a solar watch. I use the timer for a few 5-min periods on a daily basis, without fear of losing battery power. I just expose it to the sun every now and then for a few minutes. Very handy. I've had this watch for nearly nine years now. I also have several other Casio watches. The GLX-5600 has a better display. But I still prefer the my trusty GWM-5610.

    • @watchspec
      @watchspec  5 лет назад +8

      Hi Justin,
Yes, it will. The battery can only recharge so many times before it begins to wear out. However, the battery is rated to 10+ years and Casio tends to be pretty conservative on their ratings. So it may be possible that it never needs to be replaced depending on how your usage cycle\s the battery.
      I hope that helps.

it's hard to determine what's a single charge on this watch because mine has never gone below high but in manual it recommended for normal daily use you have to expose the watch under the sun at least 8 minutes or a few hours under fluorescent lamp. truthfully i never really cared unless you work in a cave or something, you're gonna be fine. the replaceable battery will be fine even after 10 years as reported by long time users on forum. even then, you can easily replace it yourself.

I had to use a pen to push it in. Casio needs to fix it and stop saying it keeps you from bumping it. I have never done that and why aren’t the other Casios like that. I’m going with 5610 this time.
