    I got one of these from Casio direct for about $79 earlier this year. IMO, the quintessential G-Shock watch. Apart from the classic styling, it does absolutely everything you could ever watch a watch to do. Tough Solar and Multiband 6 make it a zero maintenance piece that keeps as close to perfect time as you're going to get. Stopwatch features, time zone features, 200 meters water resistance... it's really the perfect beater watch. For me it's the gold standard for accuracy and I use this watch to set all of my automatics. Great piece, no intention of it to ever leave my collection (and if it ever breaks for some reason it will be immediately replaced). Solid video!

    The greatest non screw back square ever made. The forged steel case back is a nice upgrade over the stamped type case back found on entry level G-Shocks!

    I have a trick to make it sync every night. Just wear your 5600 when you go to bed :) Works every time and I live in Canada! My theory is that the body becomes an antenna for the radio signal.
    Alternatively you can use the Clock Wave app to sync it manually.

    Thanks for the comprehensive review. This is my first 'G' and i have to say i'm very impressed with it. No input needed to keep it cell phone accurate, however i live about 80 miles from the UK atomic clocks at Anthorn, so the signal is strong and ubiquitous. The graphics are multicoloured and gaudy to some folks but i have a couple of 80s Suzi GSXRs so i like them. Solar works as advertised and the watch is smaller and less 'gothic' than many 'G's my only thought is why have'nt i bought one before. Thanks for the post.

    I just ordered mine. I couldn't resist! I have two other G-Shocks, the Riseman and the GW6900, and both are solar and multiband. The watches pick up a signal even here in Northern Canada. I wanted to get this one because the other watches were too thick and hard to wear with long sleeve shirts for work.

    I’ve owned the GW M5610 for about 4-5 years now, I think I bought it in Singapore. I wore it as a beater watch for tough outside work, painting and took it diving a few times. Then I left it on my window ledge for a year not wearing it once. I picked it up again recently to change the rubber to a nato strap and it’s still accurate to the second and fully powered. It does have problems receiving a signal but can achieve it if pointed in the right direction and that’s even through triple glazing. I think if you wear the watch outside then it shouldn’t be an issue. It is still as accurate if not more so than an expensive mechanical chronometer. For a beater watch it’s the best.

  • @KeithBohling
    @KeithBohling 6 лет назад +1

    Great watch and great review. Love mine and though it doesn’t get worn as much as others, it’s great to have the atomic time in my watch box to accurately set my mechanicals.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 лет назад

      Yeah that was my intention, to have it as a reference clock for my mechanicals. I could just manually sync it from time to time or store it in a non-ideal location but I'd prefer it just function the way I had hoped.

    I’ve had both the DW5600 and this 5610 Solar/Atomic and kept the 5600. For my money the 5600 fits my wrist better and is much more comfortable. Better off-axis viewing angles and better EL Backlight as well, backlight is stronger and lasts longer (about 3 seconds) per push of the D button. Also like that I can view current time when in other screens/modes. Alarms on G-Shocks can rarely be relied on to wake up to. Much too quiet and too short of a duration. Casio should take a page from Timex’s book regarding alarm volume and duration. I do like the idea of the solar and the atomic timekeeping, my ideal square G-Shock would be the 5000 model but I’m too frugal to drop $300 on a G-Shock Square. Everybody should have a 5600 at least, these G-Shock squares are classics. Love your videos and your always thoughtfully presented content-thank you for sharing with us. 🙏

      Thanks Man, appreciate you watching and for the feedback. I think I'll just stick with my 5600, I already love that watch and the 5610 sync is a bit more of a hassle than I would prefer to deal with.

    • @Chrishagen
      @Chrishagen 2 года назад +1

      Yes! The strap on the 5610 is set at a sharper angle and digs into the sides of the wrist more. The 5600 seems looser.

      Out of the 9 Casios, 3 are tough solar(gw5610/gw6900/gwb5600). The 5610 (older model) is my favorite, fits my wrist superbly. The resin on gwb5600 is too soft in my opinion, going to swap out bezel & straps on it. I replaced the straps on the gw6900 with dw5600 straps which makes the watch hug the wrist way better than originals

  • @mattkurmas6733

    Did you ever explain why not seeing the time of day while the countdown timer is running was a deal breaker? Seems like if you need to know the time while running SW or timer, quickly flipping to the time and back again would be OK. Seems minor to me.

    • @oklahomahank2378
      @oklahomahank2378 4 года назад

      I would say it is most important on the alarms, as you want to know the current time while setting an alarm. It is also useful in the other modes. If we were not obsessive about the time we wouldn’t be watching this video. I have a base 5600 and a GLX 5600 with moon and tides. If I want those features I go with my 350, which is about my favorite but is huge.

    Touring the mountain states from the UK at the moment and brought this watch with me. I assumed if I had world time set to London when I arrived in Denver it would set the timekeeping time to local using the Fort Collins signal. Alas no change from London time despite passing through F Collins heading north! You mention on the review different time signal frequencies confusing the watch. Any comments welcome. Excellent review by the way.

    Nice review. Shame the sync feature isn’t working for you. I have the positive and negative versions and keep them on a shelf that catches natural daylight when I’m not wearing them. The room also happens to be in the direction the daily signal is transmitted from and it never misses a sync. If you find the direction the signal comes from and make sure the watch is propped upright (not its natural stance when not on wrist) this may help.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 лет назад

      Mine doesn’t seem to mind sitting on its side and syncing when it’s outside where it has a signal, but there’s no chance it will sync when in my watch box unfortunately.

    I may fall into the "knows just enough to be dangerous" catagory, but I am beginning to realize that atomic time is not set in stone as we believed. While the measurement of a second is precise (based on the consistent oscillation of cesium atoms), the time varies dramatically depending on the altitude of the atomic clock that sends the signal. Correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 лет назад +2

      All Lithium-Ion batteries last longer if they stay at medium charge. Staying at full charge will degrade the battery faster, but it will still last for a very long time.

    Great review! I got my DW5600E in 2009, still running great as my edc watch, even without a battery change. The only reason I didn't "upgrade" to 5610 or 5000 is that they can't display the current time in stw/cdt modes.

    I would love to have the 5610 because of the solar and atomic timekeeping, but i just can't stand the look of it!

    It looks like this model now has the time under the stop watch and countdown timer. Also the watches don't always say RCVD to note that it has gotten a signal for time updates, if the watch only updates time it won't show, when you go to the signal screen as long as it says "GET" and not "ERR" it means the time was updated.

    All in all a good review. We are 5 yrs later now and the new module (3495) takes care of a few of your concerns like time display while using stopwatch. As far as the radio synch, it’s just not designed to reliably sync in a watch case away from the window. Do any competitor watches do that? Also, where did you get the idea 24 hr time is only used in the military? Very widespread in all kinds of industries (aviation and maritime just to name two) and also widely used in countries that use the metric system.

    I have an old and new version. The new version has the date in stopwatch mode. Also the manual (new and old), says the watch should be taken off and placed in a window. I think it’s the nature of radio based communication. I personally think the conbo of tough solar and atomic is worth it. I have found changing batteries in the other version can be problematic, particularly with the gasket seal.

    I think it may have been one someone opened, didn't like and sent it right back. Worked out great for me. I also had a 5000U model from ebay that shipped from Japan. It had the same module as my 5610U.
    I ended up selling the 5000, it was really cool with yhe steel case however, with the same functionality I preferred the lighter weight of the 5610 as a daily. Just for anyone that has this but wants a 5000, just another factor to consider.

  • @Amen20
    @Amen20 6 лет назад +5

    Never had a problem with atomic sync, watch sitting in my watchox 3-4m from the window. I would never consider not picking a signal every other day as a problem since it's super accurate anyway... That's just silly.

    • @JustBlueFish
      @JustBlueFish  6 лет назад

      Well in my case, it would never pick up a signal when it's in my watch box. If I wanted to place it on my window frame it would sometimes pick up a signal, sometimes not, but that's not an idea location for me to keep the watch. It's a great watch, but if I'm going to have to jump through hoops to get it to sync up it's not fulfilling my intended purposes.

    • @Amen20
      @Amen20 6 лет назад

      Understandably so, different people different expectations. I would buy this watch again even if it would sync once a month but I don't really care if my watch is running late couple minutes... I guess that's because of my mostly vintage collection

    • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 5 лет назад

      I was once a facilities manager and deployed wall clocks across a corporate campus with this feature. Some of them would not receive a signal, presumably due to radio interference in their particular location... I understand that this is a real problem for people who are in the shadow of a mountain, or in a hollow, and just can't receive the signal from their nearest atomic radio tower. I always planned my vacation on the two days of the year when daylight savings initiated and terminated. The thought of setting dozens of clocks in one day was beyond my limit.

    Great review as always when it comes to specification and personal thoughts.
    Receiving the radio sync 4x a day is not so important. When we realize these watches are +-5s a month the synchro once a day or 2 days is enough.
    Once a day we`ll be in the range of radio wave for sure.
    I agree about the lack of timekeeping indicator during the stopwatch. This is the main failure of this module.

    I love your basic humble reviews of all types of watches. But the one watch you need to review is the Casio G-Shock Frogman GWF-1000 before the GWF-D!000 was created. It is the last true Casio G-Shock Diver's watch with just a timer, like a Rolex Submariner before all the other stuff got in the way. Even though there is an argument between automatics and digital watches as diver's watch. It is also ISO rated.

    • @JustBlueFish

    So do other atomic watches sync when they're in a box? Because if not, the issue is not the watch. Also do you need the watch to sync every night to keep accurate time? I think if it sync'd even just once or twice a year, it will still keep time pretty accurately like any other non-atomic watch

    Help me to understand the atomic function of this watch, if I were to have it set to my local time, and we're to go out of my time zone on vacation, would I be able to sync to the new time zone by pressing a button? Or do I have to select the correct City and wait for it to sync overnight?

    • @loose4bet
      @loose4bet 5 лет назад +4

      The button sync and the overnight sync does the exact same thing. You'll need to change the time zone to the one you're in. The clock can't identify geographical location. You can also set 2nd time zone. Press C once in timekeeping mode, now you can toggle through timezones by pressing D. You get that 2nd timezone name in date box and you have to toggle through all functions (C 4 times) to get back to normal timekeeping. You can also switch the DST in that 2nd time zone by holding A which is independent of your standard setting for DST.
