    20 years of service in the US Navy/Marine Corps combined as a Corpsman (Medic) and what was on my wrist?...the Budget Legend, the Beater King, Combat Tested...THE CASIO G-SHOCK! Love these things, always one in my collection for tough work / tough play. Can't recommend them enough.

      I’m in the Army and I wear a G Shock almost every day. I have decided to really only stick to the solar/atomic, though, seeing as I never have to change a battery or set it. My Rangeman survived being run over on deployment. That thing is never going anywhere.

    "One man's beater watch may well be another man's grail watch" - a coworker who doesn't know a lot about watches used as a beater watch an Omega Speedmaster he had got as a present. Until the watch got flooded in a pool. When the watchmaker told him it would cost about USD800 to repair the watch, he realized that maybe that wasn't the ideal beater.

      My guess is the guy figured since it was a present, it was just some off-the-shelf cheapie, but never got around to looking up what it actually was. I'm wondering what the gifter thought when they found out that they had spent so much money and likely a pretty sizable amount of thought on a gift, only to have him treat it like junk and ruin it.

      That’s strange, my father uses his speedy since 1971, every day, even got swimming in ocean SEVERAL TIMES, didn’t dive with it, serviced the watch 3 times only, the last one was in 2014 when it finally got the hexalite crystal changed after 43 years of beating. People say the Speedmaster is not a tough watch, never owned one. I bought mine in 2013 and I baby the watch and never used it in public locations fearing being robbed. My father’s watch is a pre moon, most people think it’s fake, lol.

    Ironically my 5610 is almost as valued in my collection as much as the Omega's & higher-end watches I love it. Used it to set the other watches against (Solar & atomic clock sync) Has a place in horology circles, not too big for my smaller wrist, simply the best beater. It cost more to polish a scratch out of a Rolex bracelet than to buy this watch. My official 'zombie apocalypse' watch. Can't fault it as a tool watch for the money.€100 in europe.

    40 years ago a similarly designed Casio was the go to watch for all the local windsurfers.
    It was the only watch that you could buy that was waterproof. Unless of course you had the funds to buy a Rolex Submariner whilst you were a twenty something windsurfer! The most amusing thing about it was the on the hour beeper, for some reason it amused us all to leave it on so the evening debrief in the pub was punctuated by about a two minute burst of the short beep sequence as all our watches were marginally out of synch.
    I always reckon with these Casio’s they will still be working if I go over board and get recovered (possibly in a bag...). Sadly that means the good old Titanic trick of “when did they go overboard? When their watch stopped” will be no longer acceptable in the coroner’s court!

    I would love a G-Shock and the tough solar would be perfect for me because I live in Arizona and it's always sunny. However, I can't really justify it considering I have my $12 Casio W-800H that refuses to die and does much more than I need it to. I recently modded it to have the countdown timer and I just polished the screen to make it look nice again. 100m water resistant, seems to be tough enough, nicely laid out easily legible screen.. I dig it.

    Hello from Patagonia: I adore your videos. The light rechargeable battery lasts about 15 years and the watch has to be sent 3000 km away to a big argentina city to be replaced. The cost of the battery is the wage of working 10 to 12 hs + double shipping, this is why so many argentine watchmakers never recommend this bec we do not have to local solar replacementes, just regullar ones. Cheers!!!

      I use the 5610 as a beater during shifts. It's resilience has lasted so far, 5 years. I think it's the best value watch I've owned and don't think there's anything else that offers that level of durability for a digital - at the price. I like the fact the squares are thin and don't wear too high, unlike some of the Master of Gs. They're less likely to get knocked and scraped as a result, in a busy environment. I can't recommend enough.

    What I really like about this channel is the spontaneous and unexpected humor. That beater Jody is priceless! 😃
    Casio solar watches tend to be great. The rechargeable battery is rated for 10 years (at least in the 2 Casios solar powered I got). When I bought the first one, I looked for an authorized repair center to replace the battery in case it fails. It’s well over 10 years, the repair shop went out of business, other authorized opened in my region and the battery still works as new. Cassio isn’t my favorite brand but it’s my first choice when I’m going countryside, an ABC ProTrek is rugged enough.

    A tiny bit of smart watch convenience/accuracy without sacrificing any of the toughness or retro charm.

    A year later...I finally got a Casio again, after about 30 years. Got a GW-M5610 as I like the idea of a solar powered watch. This makes my 4th solar watch (Citizen, Yelang, One Eleven are the others). So, I like the concept, I like the accuracy, and I like the old school square G look, and it is SO light, while being tough as nails. One problem - too dang tiny! I know, I know, I should have tried it on first. I can only buckle it at the very last hole, or if I like it tight, the 2nd to last hole. Geeez! I have the Jays & Kays adapters & use a nato currently. I am trying to find a Casio made longer strap, but so far, no luck there. Will go to Ali Express to look around there eventually. Just wanted to give a heads up to any other would be purchasers of this tier of Casio watches - if you are blessed with larger wrists, better try it on before you buy it, or reconcile to the use of adapters and alternative straps.

She's a cook in a restaurant (well at list she used to, thanks to covid-19 lockdown in Melbourne) and she works in extremely hard conditions as you can imagine. Well, It's good for smaller wrists, the battery lasts 10 years, budget-friendly and has a couple of features for every occasion. Also the screen is so clear and easy to read everything. I have G-Shock DW5600BB-1E and I'm happy with it but the biggest problem is it's really hard to see numerals in blacked-out screen (if you are familiar with this model you understand what I mean).

    Yeah I have the GW M5600, solar and waveceptor. Had it about 8 years now and still perfect, more accurate than any Rolex but timeless look all the same. Recently got a GW B5600 so solar, Bluetooth and waveceptor. The backlight on it can be adjusted to stay on longer but the negative LCD is a little harder to see at all angles than a positive display. I was worried that it would become a drag to read the display but honestly after a week of using it I haven't ever misread or struggled to glance down and get the time off it. So if it's a decent price definitely definitely pick up a GW B5600 as well. (Note it takes about 3 full days in strong sunlight to initially charge the battery on it) after that it's golden 😎

    You should introduce that buckle to a black Sharpie and see how they get on.
    I’ve got a few of these and the problem with the solar is if auto light is on after being indoors a fair bit it switches to power save and the light won’t come on. I just bought a GBX-100 with the huge but always visible negative display and though it’s far from perfect I’m very happy indeed that it has a battery that’ll never stop working (for a couple of years anyway!).
    My perfect beater watch would be a G-Shock with clear analogue hands I can see without glasses, (please not green) tritium tubes and an acrylic crystal for dead easy scratch removal.

      DW stands literally for "Digital Watch" in Casio parlance.

    • @amoledzeppelin
      @amoledzeppelin 3 года назад +8

      @@PaulDoodes Actually, no. Back in time, DW just meant "diver-class water-resistant" and was used not only for G-Shocks but for some usual Illuminators with 20+ bar WR as well, just like MQ meant "men's quartz", AQ meant "ana-digi quartz", AW meant "ana-digi, water-resistant" and MTP/LTP meant "men's/ladies' timepieces". Then, the designations for G-Shocks and other Casio lineups started to diverge, creating further confusion. Now, G-Shock designations can't be easily *fully* translated back as abbreviations, only to some extent:
      - DW - old school digital battery-powered;
      - G - digital, classic lineup upgrade with a dot-matrix display zone (may or may not be solar-powered);
      - GA - ana-digi, battery powered, newer generation;
      - AW - ana-digi, battery powered, older and smaller generation;
      - GD - digital, large, battery powered, newer generation;
      - GW - digital, solar-powered, waveceptor (long-wave radio control);
      - GW-M - digital, solar-powered, multiband 6 (true for intermediate generation, now all radio-controlled Casios have multiband 6);
      - GW-B - digital, solar-powered, multiband 6 waveceptor and Bluetooth time sync;
      - AWG - ana-digi, solar-powered, multiband 5 waveceptor;
      - AWG-M, GAW - ana-digi, solar-powered, multiband 6 waveceptor (the series only differ in size);
      - GM - digital or ana-digi, metal casing, battery or solar-powered;
      - GMW - digital, metal casing, solar-powered, waveceptor, may be Bluetooth-enabled (GMW-B);
      - GBD - digital, battery or solar-powered, Bluetooth-enabled;
      - GBA - ana-digi, battery or solar-powered, Bluetooth-enabled;
      - GL, GLX - G-Lide series;
      - GBX - Bluetooth-enabled G-Lide series;
      - GWG - ana-digi, "Master of G" series;
      - GP* (GPW, GPR etc) - GPS-enabled, "Master of G" series;
      - BG* - Baby-G series;
      - GST, MTG, MRG - G-Steel/MT-G/MR-G series, no additional information here.
      This list is obviously incomplete, but contains pretty much everything I encountered in our stores.

    • @amoledzeppelin
      @amoledzeppelin 3 года назад +1

      @@PaulDoodes Well, in fact, one can tell the key features of any mainstream series Casio watch even without looking at its photo or reading the description. There are several caveats though, for instance, W, besides "10+ bar water resistance", can also mean "waveceptor" in WV models etc, and A *not* always means "ana-digi" in non-G-Shock models. Hovever, once you get a grip at model naming and figure out how the lineups evolved over time, this naming stops looking so strange.

    Whenever I see this watch I get a mental image of Zapata moustaches, mullet hair cuts and knotted handkerchiefs around the neck.
    Can't help it. I don't deny it's iconic nature, it's just that it occupies a time and place . A bit like " Mungo Jerry's. - In the Summer Time " or " Sultan's of Swing " I know exactly where I was when I first heard them.
    So for me, it's a Seiko Turtle. An indestructible watch.

These watches were of this time and place...and for me they remain there, along with flares and platform shoes.

      Jody,
      Thanks for a watch video on a great watch and one that just about anyone can afford - even a pensioner like yours truly.
      So, I fully understand the value of a solar powered G-shock. One of my many 5600 series quit on me the same day as a helo insertion into Afghanistan. Luckily a team mate had a spare Casio (berating me for forgetting the rule of two is one and one is none).
      Today, as a full up geezer, I’m ok with a battery operated 5600 which I purchased along with a Casio F108- (having learned the lesson two is one and...) for under $60. I would like the dual time zone feature, but I have a Bulova Astronaut to do that job when I am travelling.
      There is a reason why Casio watches are on battlefields all over the world - they are well and truly indestructible. Just check out commandosundial for his story. G-shocks are not as wonderful as other watches and unlikely to make it into some future warrior watch collection like watches from other wars, but they are the heat.

    About the auto-backlight function: This only works in darkness when the solar cells don’t sense any light. If you keep that feature on during daytime it will have absolutely no effect on the battery consumption.
