No five-minute cinematic intro, no contorted faces, manic dialogue & bad jokes, no gongs, farts, & whistles, no sock puppets. Just a guy clearly explaining & demonstrating, in a pleasant voice & with good basic camera work, the attributes, functions, & operation of the watch. This is The Way.

Yep. I didn’t want to do the things that I try to skip when I watch other videos. No “unboxing” either. And I never sell my watches nor do I get any kind of commission when anyone else is selling watches. My general approach is just trying to answer the question: “What is everything I would want to know about this watch before buying it myself?”

Bought the 5610 about 3.5yrs ago. It's been my daily beater ever since has had at least 75% of my wrist time since I got it. This watch to me was great value, it's had an extremely hard life and lots of dings and scrapes on the bezel and strap, yet the mineral crystal is almost pristine. Most criticism of the 5610 seem to be about - 1. The small buttons are fiddly to press. 2. The light only illuminates for 1.5 secs and there's no option to change. 3. In the UK where I live the date is only given in US format and can't be altered. Sometimes people say the time not viewable in the stopwatch, timer etc functions is a bit of a limitation. For me I find my old ear drums just aren't up to the low volume of the alarm, but this is true of all G-shocks, including Master of Gs. In summation, as far as I'm concerned this is the favourite digital watch I've ever owned. It's so durable and reliable I'd be lost without it. It's not so expensive that you can't unleash it as a beater and yet it's still a respectable piece and not seen as cheap by people (that's my take anyway). In the longterm, I'll never be without a G-Shock square, as long as I own a watch.

Yours is the best video review I've found on these. I've just ordered a GW-M5610 and I already know I'll love it. About 11 years ago I got a Casio "Edifice" EQW-700DBJ-1A which is an analog solar "waveceptor", and it's been awesome. Still works perfectly, looks great, and hasn't needed a new battery yet. I really don't _need_ another watch, but I've been wanting a digital and the DW-5600 is so affordable I couldn't say no to myself.

comprehensive review, excellent stuff. I love this watch, but you know, there are way too many buttons and options/menus for my needs. I have never needed a lap timer or stopwatch, or the time in whatever other country. It doesn't make sense for the 12 hour time to just have a "P" showing when it ought to say PM or AM (although why you'd even want that I don't know because you'll know whether it's pm or am in any case won't you, so that's a pretty useless feature). So for me, although I want a G Shock (I don't yet own one) and I love the look of this, there are just so many features on it I will never use because for me, I just want to know the date and time, that's it. Many G Shocks are lovely pieces though, albeit very cluttered much of the time in my opinion, so who knows, if I buy one of these it would be an indulgence but, in honesty, I like my very simple F91W so it's not something on my immediate radar. However, I do like that blue one you show but it's unavailable for any reasonable price here in England.
Great video nonetheless, really enjoyed it.

Awesome watches. I got my 5610 like a year ago, the solar battery died in like 2 months, as a daily driver. xD They replaced it under warranty in a week and everything is working perfectly since then.
Just a few things to add:
    1. In case it's not obvious, the DST auto mode switches DST on and off completely automatically for your home city when necessary, received with the signal
    2. You can switch every WT city individually into DST mode manually by pressing and holding the adjust (top left) button
    3. Compared to regular battery-powered models, the auto EL function stays on FOREVER if you turn it on. Regular Gs are turning this function off after like 6 hours to preserve battery power. However, due to this watch having solar charging, it can recharge the lost energy pretty much within a day or so. I noticed a bug though: if you go to the display test screen with adjust + mode + set(+), the auto EL turns off. Strange. :D
    4. Indeed, if you start a timer the auto receive function is turned off, probably to avoid inconsistencies caused by time mismatch. Figuring this out drove me crazy but I did it on my own.
    5. Leaving the watch in complete darkness (drawer) sends the watch in an even deeper sleep. After a week or so more functions are turned off automatically, such as the beeper, illumination, and even the auto receiver function.
    6. You can actually kill the battery by leaving the watch for too long in the dark (months), so make sure you expose it to as much light as possible, even if it's artificial (indoor lights are light sources too).
I owned many watches in the past few years but this one is just the perfect watch for everyday use. It's rugged, accurate, has a lot of actually useful functions, and what I really like about it that it can work on its own. No smartphone link, no winding, no manual time setting. A really lightweight, fun watch to own. :)

My dream watch to own will be an identical g Shock square that can come equipped with a heart rate sensor, sleep tracker and step tracker. I’m big into walking since 2015 and I’m growing tired of wearing a Fitbit for it. Please ask Casio to make one with the requirements I’ve mentioned 🙏🥲

No, mines exactly the same, it seems all digital g-shocks do it, just because it's in m doesn't mean it's faulty

Set it directly under a desk lamp or such for 8 hours or so and it should show High charge.

Hi Greg, Just want to say thanks for the best & most thorough review of GW-M5610-1ER. I bought t'she same watch a couple of weeks ago & I am impressed with all it's functions. It only took few minutes to set up & force a time sync & all was good. I call it my summer watch as at the moment it's winter in the UK so I'm wearing long sleeve shirts, sweater or a jacket so it's spending it's time sat on a window sill. My winter watch is a W-800H-1AVES, check it out it's a great watch. Thanks again. Mike in the UK.

Just got Gshock GW-M5610-1 at the BX for 45 bucks. LOVE it. I do wish the numbers came a bit bigger like my old PAG 240 (Pathfinder) NOT a deal breaker though
Thing is super light, I put a SUUNTO compass on the band for 15 bucks.

Hi, It's worth paying $40 more for this model instead of the DW5600E-1V? Atomic timekeeping function doesn't work in my country. Excellent review, btw...

This is a very nice watch. I bought a very similar one at Macy's years ago, for $99. The model number is GW-M5600R. It was a smart purchase; problem was, I had no clue about it... First of all, I didn't even know the watch was solar, so when it started to go dim on me, I thought you needed to shake it. When I shook it, it came back to life. Then shaking didn't work, so I gave it to watch repairer to change the battery. Believe it or no, he did change the battery! On top of it, he screwed up the watch, because it no longer made any sound. Long story short, I had a great level of ignorance towards this watch. I just liked the black/orange livery. Now, I have more appreciation for the watch. And yes, I still have it, it's all fixed, and works beautifully to this day. I might even get a new one from Japan, in black/orange.

I'm glad you finally got it fixed. Yes, if you ever wanted to change the battery on one of these tough solar watches you have to be sure you get the right kind and not just a regular, lithium battery.

    • @dvamateur
      @dvamateur 5 лет назад

@@GoodTimekeeper Yeah, I think the watch repair guy changed the battery to the regular one. Of course, it was cheaper. And the reason the watch didn't make any sound, was because the back was mounted upside down. I put it the correct way up, and bingo, it works. It's been working fine though on regular battery. It never blacks out either. I also had the watch on during some nasty white paint job. Oh my, it took me days to clean that off. Anyway, this Casio had been with me through thick and thin. I really keep it now more for sentimental reasons. I also have a standard DW-5600E that I greatly overpaid for in a fancy store. (I paid $99 while at Macy's it was $49...) And I have a funky red one: GLX-5600 with moon phases. That's all for now. Recently the all metal silver one caught my eye, the GMW-B5000D-1. But the pricing on those seems a bit crazy. I had seen it in Macy's for cool $500. I was very disappointed that none of the Macy's watch discounts applied to it. Now I know why after I saw prices for it on eBay. It obviously immediately sold out at Macy's.

Thanks. I wanted the classic look, but seems the new model that ends in "U" has an LED light and not that Kool El Light which is on the light Blueish side.
Found one with the El Light at 108 with Free Shopping. Not that bad of a deal since we're in 2022 and those models are discontinued? But the "U" version is still being Produced?
I think I'll be hunting down the Black version of the original which I think is 5610-1B? Is that correct?
    Thanks for your upload.

Have had the all stainless MTG930DA (module 2688 I think) for well over a decade, love it (seems to have all the same "features" this module has). Way back when, there was an equivalent all back, all metal version that I liked better, but I didn't buy it (kicking myself now, I WOULD prefer the all black version). I was VERY impressed with the module on this one... I'd prefer it to mine just for the screen layout. HOWEVER, the sticking point is the resin band... EVERY resin type band I have had ends up splitting within a few years. My stainless band will last forever. Is there ANY way to pair this module with an all black stainless metal band?

I keep trying to tell myself that I don't have any use for the Atomic Timekeeping, and you're over there telling me all the things that it can do. I bought myself the base model last year or the year before, I really don't remember, and it was starting to look a little beat, so I found a real good deal on a used one that was spotless PLUS it had the inverted display, which I really love, but the guy I bought the watch from hated it a had trouble seeing it. The negative display also affects the EL backlighting in that for the most part, the main panel stays dark, but the actual digits are lit up in that eerie glowing green. I think it also makes it easier for my old, worn out eyes to see. Anyway, it looks like I'm now in the market for Atomic Time when I originally only wanted Tough Solar. It was probably inevitable anyway, since very rarely do I find exactly what I want, and I end up convincing myself to just spend a little more because it's probably going to be with me for a long time, and I'll always hate it because it just does less.
About that Atomic TK... I had heard a while back that the station in the US was going to be shut down, which pretty much renders the function uesless. Has anyone else heard this too? I think it was in another RUclips channel that I heard about it, but it wasn't anytime recently.

Wondering if you would be able to shed any light on following:
Do you see the "greyish" solar panel border lines that go all the way around the edge of the watch, which act as the border enclosing all the solar panel compartments, these borderlines all look to be the same greyish colour all the way around. A friend has a brand new GX-BB56-1DR, except in his watch, some parts of the solar border lines are greyish in colour and some parts of them are copper coloured?
What is your opinion of that? It does not seem to be normal from seeing all the other GX-56BB-1's on yt etc??
It is exactly like the issue in this link:
    forums.watchuseek.com/f17/gw-5000-1jf-solar-panel-color-variation-updated-pics-323060.html
It seems to be something to do with the solar panel coating. However I am not certain that it has no detrimental effect on the watch, do you know anything further on the matter?
    Many thanks.

Also, what are your thoughts for versions with negative display?

    • @GoodTimekeeper
      @GoodTimekeeper  5 лет назад +3

I still think that it's a bit more difficult to read the negative LCD display if you're in a place that isn't well-lit. I finally bought one with the negative display and the "combi bracelet" and I like it, but if I know that I'm going to be in a place with dim lighting I'll wear something else. I recently made a new video showing these G-Shock squares, including some that I purchased after I made THIS video... ruclips.net/video/zYXtExh3Z7o/видео.html
