As a person who has been playing table tennis for quite a good time,I recommend watching table tennis games as it improves you.Trust me,this is the way I learnt as well.
Reaching - Move behind the ball Hitting to hard - Placements are more important Ball watching - Hitting shots and not moving. Expect that every ball will come back Tight grip - The grip must be loose so you can move ur wrist very flexibly. Mindless serving - we should think what we gonna serve so we can know where the return gonna possibly be. Pushing long balls - Play top spin on long balls instead of chopping or backspin. Predictable ball placement- we should not be predictable while we hit the ball. Try cross courts and be not predictable. Standing upright - we must bend low on knees. When we bend it adds energy rather standing upright.
One of my biggest mistakes is not watching the ball too close when it is coming towards me. I use my peripheral vision a lot which makes me loose around 20-30% of the points. It is a really bad habit which I am trying to fix. Thanks for the video!
I had training yesterday, near the end of the training I started to pay more attention to the ball by actually looking at it and it immediately made a difference!
not really, there is so much that coaching can entail, stroke devolopment, proper footwork, serve/serve return and sequencing to name a few. What he covered is extremely important but also very fundament.
Always good to have a buddy to throw balls, correct you stuff in the moment without any bias, teach you new techniques, teach you their secret ti their succes and many more,a tt coach can't be beat.think about it when im training im not thinking about doing things right but a coach can tell you and you csn correct it immediatly
Thanks a lot Tom, I am guilty of nearly all those bad habits...I've blamed recent defeats on my racket, but deep down I knew it was bad and lazy habits that defeated me. I have a lot of work to do, thanks for sharing!
@@leob4403 You can’t depend your skill on a racket for example lets say fan zhendong uses a piece of wood, his skill could probably help him beat a semi pro such a adam bobrow.
Best table tennis tips video... Ive been playing tt from last 3 months and I've made almost all the mistakes mentioned here ... Thankfully I have overcome few of them and am progressing everyday ... Hopefully I'll be able to correct all of them soon
I never really thought too much about ball placement because what I was doing seemed to work well. That was until for the first time I played a left handed player and I found I kept setting him up for forehand topspin winning shots, it really threw me off and it was hard to kind of break my habits and change out of my normal groove
I used to play backspin only and assumed everyone would beat me if we ever got into a topspin rally. The only time I'd break that rule was if I thought I could hit a winner. Nowadays I fear topspin rallies much less and incorporate a lot of loops into my game, but I think something that is left over from my previous style is that I put everything into my attacking shots. I'll try reducing the power and see what happens.
I wouldn't say I've mastered the reduced power topspin yet but I've incorporated it for awkward balls that I can't play a full power loop against because I'm out of position. It works differently against different opponents. Sometimes I get a purely defensive block return which is a great opportunity to play a finishing shot because it's harder for them to control the height. Other times it leads to a topspin rally and I either need to just hold my nerve and place the ball well or play a backspin shot placed where they can't loop it. Overall I'd say learning this has improved my game, although it hasn't necessarily been reflected in my results as I feel there's a learning curve.
On point no.5 on mindless serving: just to add on that on top of thinking through what serve we will execute, it is generally useful too (esp. at amateur level) to observe the position and focus of our opponent, so we can serve a type or to a position of his/her weak part at that point in time. But yes, the more advanced our opponent is, the less effective is this approach.
I like to duplicate serves if the opponent can't return it, or they hit it into the net, watch to see if they think they have figured out how to return it properly, and then switch the serve up so they still can't return it. This usually deflates their confidence which makes it easier to win. I.E. my main serve is a back spin corkscrew to the right, if they figure it out I switch to a top spin to the left.
@@Ilicet 4 weeks ago I played against a player who had trouble with my backspin, I noticed it and stopped using it because I felt bad, my coach then said to me that I should keep on using it so ended up using it anyway (still lost the game sadly). Did feel better about using it because he had a serve that destroyed me, so we traded points for a while depending on who served.
Yep - all great tips - excellent work, Tom. I mention a lot of these when I'm coaching but serving and playing with purpose, and pushing long pushes are two things I don't teach enough so that was interesting for me. Cheers.
Excellent video with good tips! As a beginner, I probably make all the mistakes, but I've already been able to successfully improve on the topic of "Standing upright". I think if you focus on certain habits instead of "just playing" you will progress much faster.

I learned the very basics from my coach ages ago, when I took coaching for hardly half a year. I got back into the game more than 8 years later with hardly any attacking power but it felt like recieving and serving were two things i could get decently right. About #5 (mindless serves) I find that I'm controlling which serves I'm doing but what I'm not doing enough is trying to exploit the opponents weaknesses instead I prefer varying to keep them on their toes. It means that I will sometime give them their perfect returnable serves. There's something about "sticking my finger into the wound" that I prefer not to do. @Tom I would add a #9 habit which I see lots of beginners do (or advanced player who don't want to get better): Not turning your hips / Not transferring your weight; lots of people are guilty of using their arm only which is a very bad habit long term.
Agreed about habit #9. Something I am also guilty of. To be honest there could be a list of 100 bad habits! But it would be far too long for one video.
Great one! Another one could be ' not waiting for the ball '. In other words, trying to hit it a wee bit earlier than one should. A bit more time takes both the speed and the spin off the ball.
Great video - sad that I have to say that - you just pointed out a lot of things I still need to work on. Of the 8, I still need to really work on 5 of them. I'm pretty good at varying ball placement. I start low but soon I am pretty upright again (so still working on that). I vary serves (and try to think about them) but I tend to give tail-tail signs of where I'm going to serve (very bad!). I don't try to kill a lot of shots but I'm better at a kill if I do it with a little less force (and therefore more control). So, yes, it was a timely and great video! Thank you!
I just came from training and searched how to prepare for next shot and ball watching is excelent explanation of my problem, maybe 4 out of 8,i'll try to think about it next time.
This is a nice video thank you. I will say one thing - the first one (reaching too far), can be a good fake out move pretending you're overextending in one direction to lead on your opponent and then doing a quick snap

I have started playing Table Tennis after a gap of 7 years and i'm really benevolent to you for your videos. They have helped me in recalling basic concepts very quickly.
I do way too many, but I think that it is a common practice for people who are beginners or intermediate. You try to hit the ball hard so there is no response to that shot, therefore you don't have to hit it again and maybe miss the next ball. I didn't use to have consistency and tried to end points too quickly, with a good serve or a powerful 3rd ball attack, even if there wasn't a chance for it. Another one is that when you do a good serve and feels nice and spinny, you keep watching if the opponent can return it, and if they can, it's probably too late to get in position to do a good 3rd ball. Reaching for me was something that adquired after being beaten up and played with by experienced players who moved me side to side, toying with me, so I tried to reach the ball without moving so I was closer to the other side in case the next ball went there. I think that when you start having a bit of consistency (that I believe is the key), you can start thinking more about ball placement, how much power you need for each shot, and for me also how to get in a comfortable position to hit a proper shot. Very useful tips, Tom, I've been following your channel for a long time and it's given me many good tips to improve my game.
Couch you totally read my mind🤩🤩 i have a table tennis championship this week🏓🏓 i am really training hard and looking for the best way to fix my mistakes 😅😅 I really appreciate this video ❤ Thanks for the help ❤
This is very good explanation. I have more than one, how you name this "bad habits". Only I would name this "mistakes", not a habits. Usually these mistakes done by people who did not have any table tennis proper training like myself. People who had at least 1-2 years of training do not have these habits.
At my company some coworkers brought a table tennis... table and we all started playing, when we have time or during lunch breaks. It is a lot of fun and since we have all kinds of players the difficulty range varies drastically. I am constantly trying to improve and one bad habit that I noticed in myself today is ball watching. A ball gets served to my backhand, I receive it and just stand there leaving my right side of the table open widely.

Thanks for watching Carlos. Sounds like you are making positive changes to your game.
Couch you totally read my mind🤩🤩 i have a table tennis championship this week🏓🏓 i am really training hard and looking for the best way to fix my mistakes 😅😅 I really appreciate this video ❤
Thanks for the help ❤
Greta video. You have covered most my mistakes. Thank you very much.
7 of these are my bad habits. After a while I hope I will replace are with were. Thanks 👍🙏
This is very good explanation. I have more than one, how you name this "bad habits". Only I would name this "mistakes", not a habits. Usually these mistakes done by people who did not have any table tennis proper training like myself. People who had at least 1-2 years of training do not have these habits.
Excellent video ! I would be focusing on improving the 6th problem
thank you for this video... i have all of these bad habits...
will try my best to avoid them in the future ;-)
At my company some coworkers brought a table tennis... table and we all started playing, when we have time or during lunch breaks. It is a lot of fun and since we have all kinds of players the difficulty range varies drastically. I am constantly trying to improve and one bad habit that I noticed in myself today is ball watching. A ball gets served to my backhand, I receive it and just stand there leaving my right side of the table open widely.
Great tutorial! Thank you so much.
You want to know my bad habits? Alle the 8 you told us... Thanks for the interesting video!
Reaching - Move behind the ball
Hitting to hard - Placements are more important
Ball watching - Hitting shots and not moving. Expect that every ball will come back
Tight grip - The grip must be loose so you can move ur wrist very flexibly.
Thank you for this. Excellent video! Just subbed.
Very interesting the way you teach. Thank you very much.
