This guy is completely amazing, the way he teaches it and the perfectly timed edits of the video, showing what he is just saying whit a real game on the screen. 10/10
Even 6 year old ones are starting to disguise their servers and use the same movement for top, side and underspin. Just the moment of impact will differ, while the movement can stay the same, so the expansion her was really very good. I like how he add more options for the return at the end of video, but it felt quite a bit oversimplifying first. just to give options in the end. Still, you are right over all pretty good and straight forward explanation.
This is brilliant. Many newer players don't realize that sidespin has to be combined with another spin to be truly effective off the bounce. You can spin a basketball on your finger and it will go nowhere, yeah? The same reason why you need to put sidespin on an "axis" of sorts. Pay more attention to what kind of sidespin than the actual sidespin, and your life will be much easier.
I've not played TT in decades, but these vids are motivating me to get back into the swing (as it were!). Great advice, can't understand why anyone would give it a thumbs down! Many thanks. 👍
Returning spin serves is really hard and tough job to do. You never know what direction your opponent spin serves. I think it is all about playing more with pro athletes. I lost most of my important games only because of not properly returning the spin serves and it caused me lots of trouble and confusion. Cheers for sharing the secrets. I asked most of the best players and even coaches on how to return spin serves properly and smoothly. They never shared it and always reluctant towards it. Now I have cleared all my confusion and start practicing tips you have just mentioned. I hope it works out. I appreciate that. Welldone!
What's harder is returning them well with offensive push, an offensive drive, a lift or a top spin. It is so important to prevent the 3 rd shot finisher.
You need to return the serve on the table in a way the opponent cannot finish the point on the 3 rd shot which is exactly what a good player is trying to do. The goal of the serve is not exactly to win without a return even though it's great, it's actually to take the opponent off guard and return the ball in the center of the table or very high so the opponent can finish up with a top spin. The serve, the return and the third shot are extremely important in table tennis. More important than the spin.
Top notch ! just started TT on a local club, only played when i was 10 to 13 yo at school, and a bit of school competiton. Yesterday Old TT players were giving me a hard time only on serves, and effects everywhere... was hard to engage an exchange, when i did , i could develope my game, but boy thoses serves.... grrrr! Thankfully the coach took me appart and showed me some things at the end of the session, and your video is awsome, cant wait to return serves!
Thank you Tom. I have started playing again, after a 30 year hiatus. Love playing the Chinese at Ping pong parlor in Cambridge. They are all so much fun and great rallies. Today, however, an English guy appeared today who was a bit annoying and full of himself. He had some very difficult serves and wanted to play games rather than rally and practice - which is fine. Anywho, your video has provided some great, clear and concise solution for when I meet Kevin again! 😂 Thanks again❤️🙏👍👌
Thank you so much for this video. I could not return topspin serve, watched this video a couple times and figured it out. Your simplified approach made all the difference. I played in a small work fun tournament and halfway through used this when I could not return serves and ended up winning! I contribute it to your video 100%😀
Ohhh I lost my first competition last week because I didn't this video. Now I am sure I could handle my returning service problem after watching this video, thanks a lot Tom. Warm regards from Jakarta City. Doni
Great lesson and thank you. After watching this yesterday I was finally able to return my son's new well-honed tricky serves with consistency, bothering him no end. Very satisfying it was! Cheers from Sydney - Dave
@Tom Lodziak. You are my hero! Every time I watch one of your videos my game improves slightly. I drunk agreed to a challenge with a mate with some money on the line and I dont really know how good he is so I need my game to be at it's best!
I am a player who has great forehand and decent backhand, moving and positioning and change of pace are my forte, but my serves are below par, and my return of advanced serves is even worse. So, this video was just perfect for me, and I can't thank you enough for explaining things so well. I wish you lived in Belgrade, so I could take lessons from you. Anyway, these video lessons are the second best thing. Thanks a million, Tom!
This has been the best video about receiving serves by far. I was really struggling to understand how to read the opponents moves and what to return their serve with. Thank you
Another excellent, clear, helpful video which definitely will help players of different abilities. Tom has the ability of giving very clear straightforward advice. Many thanks.
One of the best videos ever I have came across. It helped me in my initial days . Lot of credit to U TOM for my improvement. Thank u very much and keep the good work going 👍
I am from Pakistan but I understand all ur techniques very well. I am getting better day by day after watching ur videos. I didn't know the same thing to return topspin serves. Thank u 😃
Best video I ever seen about how to return serves......wow ...what a master of techniques thanks brother!! I subscribed to your channel because of this video
Actually I struggle lot while receiving. Many matches I am loosing bcoz of weakness in receiving. This video really boosted my confidence in service receiving. Very well explained. Hope I ll perform better in coming matches. Thanks a lot sir 🏓🙏
Amazing teacher! So ludicrous but, at the same time, instructive! I've just discovered your channel and already seeing all of your videos. Thx for all the good advices!
I've been playing table tennis at the office for years, and I feel silly for not watching these videos sooner. That section on sidespin was eye opening for me. I learned through experience that sidespin with topspin could be returned with a drive, but my brain didn't put 2 and 2 together for sidespin with backspin.
my colleague pulled me into table tennis after office hour recently , ive been able to really play the game just recently too! (beginner serve and beginner receive ) like a kindergarden learnt how to walk lol.. the thing is , now they keep bullying me with their wicked serve! they aint teaching me things and i kept wondering why does all my return goes way off.. and here i am trying to return back the debt! i hope ill be able to return it soon! in that regards i am very thankful for the guide you have made!
You are not alone. Returning serves is often the hardest part for beginner players. When you are able to read the spin, then it does become easier. Good luck!
@@TomLodziak indeed! well as easy it it seems in the video , it's actually harder to apply it in the game without continuously putting an effort.. i failed for like hundreds of times untill i finally got to actually return it to the odds of 1 in every 3 serve given. like people said you need to actually walk the walk for you to get better.. one at a time! thank you for the encouragement !
@@TomLodziak Just wanted to follow up. I started practicing the push. My friend would normally give me 15 points in a 21 point match (I have a ways to go). Because I was able to use the push effectively, he started only giving me 11 points! Watching more of your videos in hopes that I will have to give HIM some points xD
@@robertloop4181 That's good improvement. Keep practising regularly and you will soon get this handicap score even lower. It will be a very nice feeling when you finally win starting from 0-0.
I'm taking private lessons from a coach. You're right the side spin doesn't matter much, it's the back spin and top spin added to it that is important because when you hit the ball you should position yourself and the racket on the opposite side the ball is going and then you can set a target where you seek to return with either a push, a drive, a lift or a powerful top spin depending on how good and what type of service it is.
Wow tats really very nice approach. A suggestion to you. let your opponent serve and you hit the ball ,in the manner you explain. Also pls position the camera in such a way that it's easily viewable.

05:40 - returning sidespin serves
08:15 - reading spin

It’s basically just: return backspin with backspin. Return top spin with top spin return side spin with down spin or top spin

Don’t underestimate reading the flight of the ball, or the direction change of the ball after the bounce.
It improves judgement as well.
