These little guys saved my life. My friend pulled the apparatus and THREE old birds woke up while I was carrying scrap to the ship. I managed to hide behind the shack when three tulip snakes appeared and latched onto my head. Like guardian angels they lifted me off, flying me high over an old bird as it tried to shoot me down. They dropped me right outside the ship and i managed to get to safety inside and close the door. They let go and we all huddled next to the item locker, hoping my friend would make it. We made it off that godforsaken planet with about 500 worth of scrap and no losses thanks to those little guys.

They aren’t even intentionally trying to harm you, apparently when 2 tulip snakes are flying, there literally trying to take you to their nests because they find you interesting, oftentimes this results in a tug of war because one of them wants you to itself, and same with the other, which results in them flying up in the air and eventually getting too tired to fly anymore and literally fall back down
Oh shit, then my guess was way off. I thought they ganged up on human sized enemies, dropped them, then ate the corpse. Yknow, when they're not eating bugs or berries/nuts, cause they look like herbivores not too high in the food chain.
@@chaosinc.382 They're almost bigger than normal snakes and snakes are predators. But i doubt they would try to drop someone and eat them. Good theory though

important tip, at least in my limited personal testing, is that you can actually prevent them from lifting you high into the air by leaning all the way left or right, and also forward as much as you can, and just staying that way. they'll carry you really far along the ground, and you will still go into the air a little, but not nearly high enough to take damage. just make sure they dont carry you sideways off a cliff or something.
Makes sense, though. These lil guys are clearly tiny predators that likely just barely rank above most prey items for dusk predators. Judging by their behavior, they likely feed on insects and whatever they can lift into the sky and drop. I'd also wager they're omnivores.

I would be interested in what exactly makes them stop chasing a player when the hive is still on the ground. Is it based on their distance to the hive? Or only the player's distance? Or a timer? Also another thing that's kind of unclear is their spawning behavior. Because they are considered daytime enemies like manticoils but one time I tried making it so only bees are in the daytime spawns of a moon but it didn't spawn any... I'm specifically wondering if there's some sort of connection with the scrap spawning mechanics since they're kind of both an enemy and a scrap item.
I still remember encountering them for the first time with a group of friends. We were cracking up laughing so much and so hard because one friend had a few on but didn't know what was happening and was just flying around randomly both outside and inside.
Great video, I really enjoy these videos as they've helped me get better at the game, and the format is fantastic! Small note on 2:00 - I don't think it's meant to be random, as I've dealt with the same thing in of modding other games. Pseudocode for what I'm guessing is going on (logic wise): int target = 0; for (int i = 1; i 0 && amt >= client_tulip_amount(target)) { target = i; } } What makes it decide to attack the player with the higher ClientID is this part: ` >= `, had it been written as just ` > `, then it would keep its current target (the lower ClientID with the same amount of tulips on them). Given that players usually don't plan out who joins first and get specific ClientIDs, it can sorta be random in practice and feel random, but that would be the case whether or not it was written to target the lower ClientIDs or higher ClientIDs, actual randomness in code would be written differently.
Yeah it's simply just because Zeek loops through all players in the order of the client ids like you said. Alter did describe it slightly wrong, the way it actually works is best described if you have 3 players in LOS: - None of them have any tulip snakes on them: highest client id - Two of them have 1 tulip snake on them: lowest client id that has at least one on them - One person has none, the 2nd has 1 and the 3rd has 2: still the lowest client id that has at least one on them (the amount you have on you doesnt change anything, it just checks if you have at least 1)
