Jax the rabbit lol. I remember when I first picked up the original marvel star wars issues, I thought WTF about the rabbit. But if you can get past it, the stories are actually really good. They are some of my favorite from the bronze age.
Great episode! I prefer the newer stories and the dark horse stories, but it doesn't stop me from appreciating this early issues. I believe they are iconic even if they are not the best the franchise has to offer.
Okay I’m an old man. I grew up with Star Wars in the 80s. I’m just enough to remember Empire Strikes back in the theatre. Yes they sort of do suck, but at the time they weren’t bad. As a kid, we could just pass of the green Vader as looking different we didn’t scrutinize the films as we do now. I do agree with all of your points.
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed… I mean in comparison to today’s books they do suck, but I do enjoy them overall. They are kinda fun lol
Frankly, I love these original marvel star wars issues. I mean I grew up with them so that may affect my judgement. Even today I get warms feelings of nostalgia reading these stories. I have the vol. 1 omni. Its great
Great video D! Not a huge fan of these original issues myself. I prefer the dark horse stuff, but listening to this I think I can see why. I had no idea how much the writers were restricted by Lucasfilm. I'm sure they could have been so much better
These are perfect time capsules that share an era of Marvel and Starwars...one which would be changed forever as the years go by!
Yes, it is incredible how much it has changed in almost 50 years right? There is an amazing charm to these books and I really feel that marvel did a great job with them despite all the limitations Lucas film put on the writers and artists
'Oh those Lannisters!' Taking Brotherly love to a whole nother level that'll make Luke/Leia blush! Hehehehe
Lmao I know right!?
Personally I think the older Star Wars comics are awesome and worth revisiting! It helps see how other artist and writers added stories when the property was hot, new and unexplored! Plus, to this day, there have been products made of obscure characters( the green 'bucky o'hare' lookalike for example ) as action figures and more! Personally I own a Pizzazz collection of Starwars comics in a combined collection by American Entertainment with a Leia cover by Brian Steelfreeze!
Nice!! And I am with you totally… I love these comics!
This was a good topic..i was curious of this older Star Wars comics that were releases as omnis
Found my own comment
I collected the first 30 or so books that came out at that time. I even had Dave Prowse sign a few of the first 3 books when he showed up at seton hall around 1979 or 80. I loved then, I grew to like Chakin’s art but at that time, I didn’t.
Original Marvel Star Wars was great after that first year or so. It really got good before and after Empire Strikes Back era. Then it got sorta weird and lost toward the end with all the added characters sometimes getting spotlight over the main crew.
I'm a HUGE FAN of STAR WARS 11 to 37!
According to Roy Tbomas, the STAR WARS comic saved Marvel Comics from going out of business! The success of SW kept the company afloat in those years before The Xmen sales blew up and JIM SHOOTER took over!
George Lucas himself wanted Carmine Infantino to draw the comic because Lucas was a fan of Infantino's ADAM STRANGE comics at DC when he was a kid! When Archie Goodwin took over the writing, he brought even more of a Space Opera sensibility to the book, which was much closer to George's developing vision!
BTW You forgot DAVID MICHELINIE and WALT SIMONSON who worked on the book in between the films Episodes 5 and 6, probably around 1980 to '81!
Great, interesting listen Dante. Jax the rabbit sucks, but I think the title overall was pretty good
I had bought some of the comics... but man I was just mainly dying to see Star Wars again. I remember when it premiered on HBO I snuck into the living room at 2am or whenever it first came on. My parents were not thrilled and sent me back to bed. I couldn't sleep bro! Lol
lol that’s amazing! I love hearing stories like that. I would have loved to have been growing up to have that feeling of Star Wars mania!
I have only started reading them this year. I think they did an amazing job considering the limitations they had (not allowed to use Darth Vader after the movie adaptation and not pursing the romance between Luke and Leia (they were not given a reason for it)). There are also concepts the comics created that the filmmakers started to utilise going forward.
Exactly!! I love them as well. They are so great. And I’m glad you can see how important the comic was to the overall success of the franchise
@@Dante19883 like you, I have just read Epic Collection 1 and will be reading 2 as soon as I finish Knightfall Vol. 1!!!
I used to get the UK comic back in the day. It was weekly so there were hundreds of issues. Lots of reprints, random unrelated stories but a few exclusive stories too.
I preferred Marvel UKs Transformers series (332 issues) and Thundercats (129 issues).
Yeah I didn’t know about the weeklies until I got the epic collection volumes. I think that would have been cool to be able to get those
EVERYONE talks about the rabbit. But NOBODY talks about the porcupine. And THAT is how you discern fake “disgust/outrage” from the real thing.
Anyway, as someone who grew up with them, I can unapologetically say the Marvel Star Wars comics were great. That first arc with the rabbit (and porcupine) was an early homage to The Seven Samurai/The Magnificent Seven.
Marvel had to start drawing these books before the movie came out and they weren't given access except to a couple stills. That's why the art doesn't always match the film.
Excellent examination of the struggles writers of this title experienced. I can really say that I am impressed with the fact that they could still make this book sell even with all the restrictions. I wonder what their excuse is for the rabbit though. Not cool! Stupid jaxx
I'd love to get volume one but it's pretty much 300-500 or so lmao
The original Star Wars comics were great. There was a cool issue where Leia is captured by a Stormtrooper who was from Alderaan. It was a great issue.
Yeah! I agree with you! I really loved the original Star Wars… well never see unique stories like that again. I haven’t gotten tot that issue yet, but that’s sounds interesting. Can’t wait to get to it!
@@Dante19883 I just found it. It is issue $6. Great issue.
Dark Horse reprinted Marvel Star Wars in omnibus form. I believe they got all the issues in those volumes.
Star Trek and Galactica both predate star wars, along with Flash Gordon, the series Lucas originally wanted to do, and the series that was based on, Buck Rogers.
When these came out I did read some - and was very disappointed - stopped purchasing after a few issues.
I bought the omnibus - didn’t finish it. It was that bad.
Lol ha ha you do have to be patient at times with it. Guessing you won’t be picking up the other volumes? 😂
Ill take vol 1 if you have it!!!
Plenty of time to watch star trek: the next generation
Hell yeah it sucked. The stories were waaaaay out of continuity.
By today's standars yeah, I'm sure they suck, but I think people who grew up with it like them. Might be nostalgia though lol
They made stuff up instead of making stuff up now and claiming *'it was always there'* even tho it was never in the original movies, etc.
