I especially wanted to highlight you made about the corporatism and bureaucracy in Star Wars now. The more corporate it becomes, the worse the content is becoming! I would really love to hear your take on the Star Wars Star Cruiser hotel controversy. Thanks and keep up the great work!

    I like your take on high republic
    I personally listened to the audiobook and really liked how light of Jedi.
    I also listened to the rising storm, I kinda get what you mean about it being slow, but in my case i still cared about some of characters, and their personal arcs still kept the story alive for me.
    I can’t empathise with your take that they are not interesting enough, did you barely like any of them in the first book?
    If anything,the dynamics between the villains and and ending were the most interesting elements for me.
    I do get what you mean about tokenism, not subtle at all

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  2 года назад

      Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. In the first book, I found the plot pretty riveting and original. the dynamic between Avar Kriss and Elzar Mann had me intrigued. I enjoy reading about personal conflicts very much.. this was examined a bit in Rising Storm with Mann’s romantic relationship, but the rest of the characters I couldn’t care less about. The book I feel spreads itself too thin with character POV and we don’t get enough time to form any attachment to them. Plus I find the incorruptible Jedi like Bell Zettifar, Loren Greatstorm and Stellan Gios to be so tiresome. Heck, Obi-Wan was a “goody-goody” but he even experienced personal conflict in the Obi-Wan novel by John Jackson Miller. That actually is one of my favourite Star Wars books. Overall I just find the high republic to be superficial. And yes, the tokenism was way overdone in this book. Thanks for commenting!

    I really didn't like Light of the Jedi, I bounced hard off of Cavan Scott's earlier books, so I didn't try. I tried Claudia Grey's first YA book in the series, and was bored. I'm stuck on her adult book in the series, and I'm planning to try reading it, instead of using the audiobook like I started. But it's not great.

  • @andrewvillers6447

    Hey, sorry that I’m late, but anyways, a couple things to start.
    1) the Nihil are more like space Vikings, per se.
    2) the other villain are plant people created by the Sith, the Drengir.
    Now that that’s out of the way, let me say that I’ve kept up with the majority of THR’s content, sans the comics. I’ve read Light, Darkness, and Courage from the initial wave. The one I felt was the most political/woke/pretentious, was the Test of Courage by Ireland. Vern is a bit of a self-insert by J.I., she’s so overly perfect and stuck up that it’s impossible to like her. I didn’t mind the other two; I find Light by Soule to be pedestrian at its best and boring/cringey at its worst. Gray’s book was boring and loaded with bad ideas (Jedi sex, Geode, etc). The characters are bland with the exception of Elzar, who is not enough to carry the series. I liked Bell and Loden, but…well I don’t want to spoil for the audience. At the end, Jedi are dying and I don’t care, and that’s a terrible failure on the writers’ part. I don’t like the agenda, and there wasn’t a world established that I can care about.
    PS. Syl is also gay. Lots of gay characters. It’s not organic, it’s like they’re being shoved in your face.

    • @Ricky-ql6ib
      @Ricky-ql6ib 2 года назад +1

      Lots of gay characters for sure and Ireland just sucks... Now I liked grays book for the most part especially with the one master who's struggling with understanding why light and dark are split

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  2 года назад +1

      Exactly! The only thing that would get me to read more is if a future novel dealt only with Elzar Mann. I give you credit for checking all that out. I read Grays book Soules and this one. Now I’m done lol

      @@Dante19883, I can see why a lot of people are dropping this/aren’t paying it any mind. Thor Skywalker said this series suffers from overplanning, and I think he’s slightly off the mark. I think those in charge chose to overplan on all the wrong things, like diversity and representation instead of building a world with phase one that we would care about and want to thrive. Phase one puts us right at the point of crisis instead of establishing how the Republic was at its golden age. I understand we need conflict, but that could’ve come from the Republic thriving in spite of conflicts, which could’ve arose out of pioneering the Outer Rim and the Wild Regions. It also doesn’t help when TOR did what you tried to do, except it did everything better. It established characters that we grew to love, a Republic that was resilient, strong, relatable, and able to be rooted for, all while entertaining us.

  • @Milkfeedboy
    @Milkfeedboy 2 года назад +5

    Respect for reading the series but many of us "toxic" fans saw this miles away. On a whiteboard you could see the topics on what was important for them and it was like inclusion and diversity on top and story further down..You did not mention Justina Ireland who is an activist for her cause and social issues can not be in the back ground it needs to be front and center. Sadly what they are fighting for social justice can be a powerful tool when we can relate but it often becomes cringe and the story must be ideological as to not offend people.
    I find it hard to care for many of the characters like these since they act according to their authors political belief. Let's hate on the white straight male yeah!!! Let's lecture the audience and remind them how bad Trump is..Can we plz just watch a good show and for the next 20 mins forget we are on planet earth?
    Some years back I enjoyed many shows and the social issues was allways there and you could relate and wanting things to be better and be better. Take the Expanse it is a conflict where human fights human but not based on gender/race/religion its based on if you are from Earth, Mars or the belt. We can relate and understand and get excited for this amazing story. People are gay black and it does not matter because the story is amazing and that gives amazing characters.
    I will not invest the time in this Star wars from the story group and Kathleen Kennedy. It is not for me and that is ok. The sad thing is that many things move towards the High republic way of doing things or the show is problematic. Focus gets on is the black character black enough or is the character gay enough. Most of us have watched many shows and movies with diversity and strong female casts and now it is like that stuff never got made. So we are stuck with writers and their egos to change characters to suit what they want and need. Imagine going to another fandom and feeling the entitlement to shape it for what you want. So I'll rewrite the Jane Austin books and put In tons of action and macho men since we need the male audience to be able to relate to these books. Focus on making a great story first and the rest will follow. The problem with the high republic is that it is all mapped out and it matters not how good writer is when the foundation is about the message and ideological standingpoints.

    • @chaz9808
      @chaz9808 2 года назад +2

      You can tell they care more about “diversity” than telling an actual good story with interesting characters

    • @Dante19883

      I agree with you both. I got that sense a lot in the second book. Yes I’m done with the high republic but now I’m wondering what the new one shot novel releases will be like. There are two slated for spring 2022 release dealing with Luke and Lando and another as well.

    • @LA_HA

      This is happening across different franchises. Was told by a niece this was happening with Anne of Green Gables. Yeah, the book written at the turn of the last century. Took a look, and yep, if you don't like how the novel was co-opted and the general story was hijacked by people who used this popular novels and series to preach at people instead of creating their own stories.
      It's giving me the idea that the writers tried to write something on their own, but no one cared and it failed. So, how to make people interested? I know. Masquerade the new work as a well-established older work; change it to talk political ideologies; and then charge fans with being right wing monsters when the fans hate it, refuse to pay for it, and criticize it. It's legit Weird

    It kinda sounds like you dont wanna see gay content in star wars at all, when straight characters have romantic or sexual thoughts about a character you didnt complain about that, It honestly isnt anymore over the head then any romance in a book straight or otherwise, so if you just dont like any romance/sexual content in starwars i suppose thats fair, but i dont think it's as over the head annoying as you're making it out to be in the last 10 mins of this video

    • @Dante19883
      @Dante19883  2 года назад +3

      Hi there, thanks for your comment. No it’s not that at all. Inclusion of gay characters is fine, but there is a point, with gay or straight characters where it becomes a bit too much. Star Wars has never been a franchise that has been overly concerned with sex and romance. That is why generally attack of the clones was panned by fans. Lucas called it a love story, but do profound love stories really jive well with Star Wars? Star Wars and sexuality in my opinion is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Inclusion is great, but Cavan Scott (or the editorial committee) went way overboard with sexuality in this book. It got to the point where I felt like I was being forced to think a certain way. I would be saying the same thing if they overdid it with issues of straight sexuality. Thanks for commenting

      @@Dante19883 I personally view starwars like this, sex exists, obviously, if it didn't then people wouldn't exist, the thing is it isn't necessary to show it, any mature viewer knows anakin and padme had sex, but it has no reason to be said/presented because starwars is for everybody, but hey that's how i view it.
