2:23 Guts,” the new album by Olivia Rodrigo, who two years ago catapulted from mid-level Disney teen star to pop supernova with her single “Drivers License.” Rodrigo has become part of pop’s elite, and her new album reckons with what that means, for her and for everyone watching her.
36:31 Zach Bryan, whose new self-titled album is currently the No. 1 album in the country, and who has carved out an idiosyncratic path through country, bar rock and roots music. He was also arrested last week for interfering with a police investigation in connection with a traffic stop.

It's difficult to read all the bitter (and one could say elitist) comments. Popcast and Popcast Deluxe stage high-level commentary about popular music and culture, situating the art and discourse in cultural, historical, and aesthetic contexts. Pop culture-especially popular artists-matter to people. Thinking critically about pop culture, especially alongside Popcast, allows us to not only better understand our times but also to better understand ourselves. I wonder how many of these commenters, had they lived in the late 16th century, would have denigrated the raucous plays at The Globe as sites of immorality and low culture, as many did.
Also, Olivia Rodrigo is a talented, unique, authentic artist. She draws from a range of genres and styles to construct songs that move many (including myself) while commenting on the complexities our times. Not thinking through her music means not thinking on what it is like to live and to live in the 21st century.

Tbf to olivia. Most 18/19/20yr old girls are full of self flagellation and insecurities. Thats the time of our lives that we have the most doubts and make the bulk of our mistakes and trying to figure out how we are going to deal with that. So i think thats extremely relatable. Which is important to her main target demo of teen and twenty something year old young women.

As a Gen X, i still appreciate the Art that Olivia Rodrigo puts out in both her album. The fact that she writes most of her songs at her age is impressive enough & they way she delivers it vocally gives people the feels is an accomplishment. I don’t think its fair to compare her to other much older singers (some who can pick & choose their own songs written by other people) and to comment that she is such a goody two shoes as not being real?… i guess some people want to see is a self destructive teen girl because she cant cope with fame, would that make you guys be more kind to her if she goes that route?

It's so funny.. the nyt popcast fortunately has been existing in a audio only format since 2014 - tweak the formula slightly, add video and upload the result to the nyt official youtube channel and countless people will start to bother pointing out how stupid this format seems to them. I've been an avid listener for 3 years by now and i am so grateful for this addition. If it wasn't for the 'videopodcast' on the main channel, those very subscribers probably wouldn't bother at all. Despite all the great and very same content existing in paper/digital form already by the time the episodes are on.
    Please keep it up

why is everyone obsessed with knowing who she’s singing about in particular? popstars have been signing about relationships forever but it only seems like female artists are under scrutiny for singing about relationships. it’s not like she ever mentioned any names in particular. it’s ppl that are obsessed with making female artists seem scandalous or like they’re feuding with someone, meanwhile taylor cheered for olivia at the vmas. gossip blogs and magazines just want clicks to generate ad revenue, including the new york times. your journalistic standards have plummeted

To end the topic of the song 'the grudge', it was supposed to be on the SOUR album but that album had too many ballads already, so isn't about Swift at all. Three other songs also were written before SOUR was released 'logical', 'love is embarrassing' and 'ballad of a homeschooled girl'. So the fans are going to feel like these songs are similar to SOUR because it's the same original topic. Olivia has over 130 songs she has written to still develop but she feels she already gave her best songs in these two albums (lyrics from 'teenage dream') which was the second to last song she wrote for this album, 'lacy' being the last song, pulled from a poem she wrote while attending a poetry class at USC. Olivia has said she writes songs to deal with her emotions and if fans enjoy the songs the better. But she isn't greedy to make only popular songs just for winning awards, she writes songs for her and her type of music that can be categorized in different genres. This is all refreshing for the listener. 🎶💜🎶

harmonic symphony like beethoven, ludwig, wolgang etc. uses the same common piano notes - the 5th note, if you play them slow and monotonous they will come with similar sound. We create music according to what we hear. Rock music has the same style I-II-IV-V progression, extreme notes with loud voice, uses similar chord and so they sound the same. Lady Gaga her music sounds like Madonna. Jon Bon Jovi sounds like aerosmith and journey. Taylor Swift never used special notes and chords. She only used effects, like itchy catchy sounds, if you remove them it may sounds the same to other pop music singer, miley cyrus itchy catcy also. Country music songs from 70's until today sounds similar bec they use 12 common chords and one instrument GUITAR. Our own music instruments never get EVOLVE for the past 50 years. Drums are the same, xasophone uses common 2 octaves with 32 notes, but not all being use, piano uses only 80 common notes, opera singer only uses alto and tenor, we just cry because of the drama.. we hear the same sound and music because our instruments are obsolete. Asian classic music is soothing and mellow because of the culture same with arabic. American music today are loud and the same, and so the people

by the way rapper uses the same tone of voice "RAP VOICE" and dance with the same chorus. Jay-Z, Eminem, 50 cents, tupac, SAME. they uses rap voice only...with the use of effects POW POW POW of hands moving to the left and right, Up and down, lousy trousers and trunks..sounds the same sir..and the most enigmatic of ALL - country music from 70's and today sounds similar. Since i was a child and i am now 46.. the same..all singers sounds similar..all singer uses one instrument GUITAR, with 12 common chords. It never evolve. it never change..and to those who have a high expectations kindly used AI so that the music will be sound different to humans
