The whole Monster Zero thing, calling Ghidorah and Godzilla's rivalry ancient, the oxygen destroyer, Serizawa dying just like he did in the original (which was called King of the Monsters in America) the original themes of Godzilla and Mothra. You could tell the director was a big fan of Godzilla and wanted to do a good job.

    I don't really understand Rick's comment about the film saying nukes are good. The film doesn't say that at all. Godzilla feeds off nuclear radiation, which is what's needed to make him stronger so he can battle the other Kaiju (the ones who mean to harm the planet, as Godzilla is at worst indifferent). Nukes are a necessary evil at best, which is totally in line with what previous Toho Godzilla films have stated. I understand that the change in approach to using the nukes due to cultural sensibilities can be jarring, but wasn't Godzilla underwater when he was given the nuke? Realistically, how much damage could it have done? Marine life may be screwed, but I think I'd still prefer an area of the ocean being nuked than downtown Boston.

    • @mouse3872
      @mouse3872 5 лет назад +12

      On top of that he said that Nuclear weapons were never used in Godzilla movies BUT IN THE JAPANESE 90S Godzilla vs king Ghidorah they use the same plan to power up Godzilla

      @levischorpioen 5 лет назад +7

      Colton Ritter Holy shit, I completely forgot about that but you’re right. Not surprising, considering this film is essentially just a remix of a lot of stuff that has been done before by Toho (which is a huge compliment, by the way).

      Sith Reborn The problem for me is that 95% of the jokes fall flat. There was one joke in the movie that people in my theater laughed at. In Marvel, more jokes are successful. This movie tried so hard to be like Avengers with monsters.

    • @titanousgrimm4189
      @titanousgrimm4189 5 лет назад +2

      Will Morton yeah comedy is very suggestive, I personally found myself chuckling at most of the jokes. I don’t disagree that the jokes could have been written better, but I never thought the movie was trying to be an avengers movie. To me it felt like the old Showa Godzilla movies, just with CGI instead of suitmation.

    • @willmorton2123
      @willmorton2123 5 лет назад

      Sith Reborn The beginning is a blue object that is reacting and scientists are trying to figure out whats happening. Then a bad guy shows up to take the glowing blue object. (Avengers 1) The main evil plan is to wipe out a lot of life because humans have been using up all the resources and the planet is on the verge of destruction. (Thanos) And the obvious one is the forced jokes between a group of “heroes” trying to save the day.
      All of these shared universes that these corporations are trying to start (Warner Bros with DC and monsters, Universal with the “Dark Universe”) are just trying to cash in from the success the MCU has had by doing the exact same thing, but none of them have had the same success.

    • @titanousgrimm4189
      @titanousgrimm4189 5 лет назад +3

      Will Morton if you look for parallels you will find them, plus this film script was already written before infinity war or endgame hit theaters. Also the MCU was not the first movie to include those plots, they are common movie tropes. As to the cinematic universe Godzilla was the first, and universal was the second. MCU is just the modern example that proves it works well. And yes after seeing the results many other companies are trying to recreate it because they want to make the same money that the MCU does.

    They basically tell you the plot of the next one... Kong becomes the alpha of one group of Kaiju and Godzilla gathers another group, and the two gangs fight for supremecy, until King Ghidora is resurrected (possibly as a mecha, and probably summons a whole gang of space kaiju like Gigan and Space Godzilla) and then all the earth kaiju have to team up to fight them.

    I actually enjoyed the human drama more in this than the last film. Human characters in Godzilla movies are usually bland but in this movie they are better than most found from the Heisei Era. The characters here though are not the best but it didn’t bother me. I love that they kept the environmental messages more relevant here because the old movies have always been like that. A Godzilla movie isn’t complete without those messages. The monster action was just great and I wanted more. Wish there were more wide shots but it’s fine. The Rodan chase was so intense. As you can tell I loved this movie. You guys should react and watch all of the old movies!!

      I also didn’t mind the humans EXCEPT the unGodly amount of time they just stood around watching. Like Damn there are big ass monsters fighting and you want to just stand and watch at their feet as they are fighting and only run at the last second. And when they pulled the girl from the tub and instead of running straight to the truck and having that scene as you are driving away, they stopped to get her revived and have a family moment, and then suddenly remember what is going on around them... like come on! I was literally scream RUN, YOU IDIOTS! The entire movie. And just as in previous movies, the soldiers standing their shooting their guns which have been proven over and over again to be ineffective! Like if you pop off a few rounds and the monster isn’t fazed, the next option is to run, not to just keeping standing their shooting their guns for fun.🤦🏾‍♀️

    Godzilla’s nuclear themes don’t work for international audiences as the US and other countries have different relationships culturally with nuclear power than Japan. I honestly loved this movie through and through because its a GODZILLA movie. They are meant to be an action packed, monster screaming smackdown. I don't really understand the hate for the human side. Pretty straight forward if you ask me. Two sides, one side wants to save the earth with as little destruction, in a sense, as possible and the other. Destruction is necessary in Jonah's thinking. As for the monster, I loved how they didn't just do Mothra, Godzilla, Rodan, and Ghidorah. They put in those other four and gave us that amazing shot of the King giving his godly roar ontop of the rubble. I loved all the references especially the ending with all the King Kong stuff. Lastly, the post credit scene I think hints to Mecha King Ghidorah. Fingers crossed! :)

    Yeah regarding the nuke to revive Goji: Mark Russell has to make peace with the creature that killed his son; now Serizawa has to make peace with the nuke (He's from Hiroshima--I THINK canon states he was a baby in the city when 'The Bomb' got dropped) to power up Goji to save the Earth from G3.
    As for Japan's feelings RE: being nuked, well...does it really? Some Japanese film makers (like from GMK) pointed out the 'Ghost Godzilla' was 'fueled' by the spirits of the people the Japanese killed during the war (dont' forget in places like China, Indonesia and the Philippines, Japan's occupation was nearly as brutal, as the Germany occupation of Poland, and The Western Part of the Soviet Union) and had forgotten during the post war peace. The fact that Goji keeps flattening Japan...maybe, subliminally, the film makers also what to 'punish' Japan for it's role as aggressor but not owning up to it?

    The modern Godzilla isn’t a cautionary tale about nuclear weapons, he’s a cautionary tale about nuclear power and how it can be dangerous if misused or used for evil.
    The kaiju radiation is good in much the same way that the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone has been reclaimed by nature and become a wildlife refuge. The nuking of Godzilla jumpstarting him is just continuity being consistent. They knew he fed on atomic radiation so they needed to supply him with a large amount really quick.

    I think Godzilla will fight alone against King Kong. He was described as a predator at the very top of the food chain. If you take parallels with real predators, very few species hunt and live in large groups. Godzilla is a “lone wolf” and very proud, he accepts help only in extreme cases.

    First, love you guys review on this amazing movie and not shit on the story element, THUMPS UP! I know we all want monster fighting but the story, in my opinion, is not as bad as everyone give it credit for... and that's sad because I love this movie a lot but I can understand why people don't get the entire picture.
    SPOILER!!!
    Besides the CGI fight being too expensive and was not enough to fight that people complain that it cut to human whenever a fight started, the story is really just... you really need to understand each character dynamic to understand why they do what they did.
    For example, Emma Russell, the movie mentioned that she is the one that came to Jonah Alan (Charles Dance) as she already planned to release the Titans even before this movie. Mothra was just a test subject for the Orca, she was nowhere near an Alpha and Emma probably though Mothra would be the easiest Titan to test the Orca on. But when the Orca work, her plan is in motion already, with Jonah Alan as the eco-terrorists and acts as the bad guys, Emma would have an excuse for her plan. Ghidorah is also an Alpha rival to Godzilla, it was the best decision since only Alpha can fight another Alpha and she knows that she only need one of them for her plan, so releasing Ghidorah to fight Godzilla before any others Titans would prove the easiest and whoever left of the two will be a main player in her plan. Then we all know what happen until Ghidorah, Emma's plan was going well until Ghidorah decided to awaken every Titans, that's when "she realizes she fucked up" moment kinda thing. And with all the things she sees, the destruction that her decision caused would explain why she would want to stop Ghidorah and fix her mistake.
    The same thing for Mark Russell and Madison Russell, the character did evolve throughout the movie! While it might look like a mess, it makes sense to be a mess because everyone in this movie has their own motive. Ghidorah (destroy everything), Godzilla (keep Nature Balances), Emma Russell (Restore Earth using the Titans), Jonah Alan (Emma's plan/Ghidorah DNA), Mark Russell (Kill Titans -> fix his mistakes of leaving his family because of his own ego), Government (Kill Titans), and Other Titans (Obey the Alpha).
    As I mentioned, the story is not that bad when you understand it but oh well... Glad not everyone is hating on the movie =)) And Mike Dougherty did his best and I do appreciate him going above and beyond to make this movie even though in a lot of ways, the movie indeed has flaws... I mean every movie does!
    Enough said, wonderful and fair review as always! and Long Live the King!!! PS: Hype for Godzilla vs Kong!!! xD

    I think people aren't giving Kong much of a chance. Like they said, this Kong was made to fight Godzilla. He is the biggest one yet. The old Kong has to climb up the Empire State building, this one uses it as an armrest. He is incredibly smart and if they're fighting on Skull Island, then he knows the area better than Godzilla. They could bring back his lightning ability from 1962. Plus he's a got a hell of a right hook and he knows how to use his surroundings to his advantage at the expense of his opponent. And now that I think about it, I think it would be cool to see those two fighting side by side. Sure, let them have a fairly large fight and then Mecha-king ghidorah comes out, beats Godzilla down and then Kong comes out of nowhere and saves Godzilla. You hear this cool music and they start fighting together. Plus they could use any fight scenes in the middle of the movie for Godzilla and Kong to fight each other and only have them team up at the climax

    I think what you aren’t taking into account is that this Godzilla, because he’s benevolent, and the nuclear bomb was used to heal the primordial god of the planet, it’s more akin to nuclear power. A potentially deadly weapon used for good, without harming the environment of used properly.
    The green mushroom cloud was the oxygen destroyer, not a nuclear bomb.
    Not to mention, the other monster is literally from space. Humans fucking up the planet? That’s bad, but we aren’t intentionally do it and some try to right the wrong.
    Ghidorah was trying to permanently destroy the entire god damn planet.
    I think the folly of man is on the small scale here.
    EDIT: In round 2 Godzilla was bodying Ghidorah- a decapitation within seconds. The water is Godzilla’s strength- he was swimming circles around the dragon.

    As a fan of the old movie Godzilla's I'm very conflicted about this movie. On one hand it is by far the most epic destructive Godzilla movie I have seen!
    On the other hand they have thrown some major points of lore to the wind. Godzilla going nuclear is when he's DYING! Not something you can just wake up after all healed.
    It's a death sentence not a super Saiyan power-up.
    Then again, they did admit Ghidorah was from space. Though I understand why they left his long backstory out.

Of course, in my defense, I grew up watching the Saturday Afternoon Monster Theatre in the '70's, with all the costumed actors, puppeting, claymation, and english translation of japanese dialog. I have also watch the original US B/W version of Godzilla, and the 70's, 80's, 90's, and Y2k versions of Kong and Godzilla. I have not watched Skull Island (on my bucket list), but This new Godzilla seems like an updated version of DESTROY ALL MONSTER, a japanese concept where all the monsters are kidnapped from their containment on Monster Island by aliens in control of Monster Zero aka King Ghidorah.

THAT is what makes a Godzilla movie, not the stupid human drama. His performance was extremely lackluster and the movie suffered for it.

    But if you ignore the dumb humans in this movie, the movie was good, not the best but pretty enjoyable as a Godzilla fan.

      +Choco Banana I thought that at first, too, but then I remembered that technically none of the events of the 2014 film would have happened if it hadn’t been for the actions of humans. Miners drilling into the earth woke up the male MUTO, the female wouldn’t have been anywhere near San Francisco if her dormant spore hadn’t been dumped in a nuclear waste storage facility near Vegas, and Godzilla wouldn’t have come to San Francisco or Hawaii if people hadn’t woken up the MUTOs. Everything that happened was because of humans. So yeah, her hatred of humanity kind of makes sense.

    This movie was approved by The Japanese studios who own the rights to Godzilla...and the Fact that the Doctor who sacrificed himself for Godzilla whose father was killed in the Hiroshima Bomb finally made peace with himself and called Godzilla old friend was to end part of an ongoing story.There's a lot more depth to this from the Japanese point of View.
