    In case you guys didn't catch it, when Mothra sacrificed herself, her body disintegrated over Godzilla's and initiated a reaction in him that allowed for his atomic form. When he's blasting out that radiation in the end, you can not only see her wings in the blast wave, but you can hear her call, as she's essentially assisting Godzilla in battle. That's the nature of their symbiotic relationship, and why she's considered the Queen. And as others have mentioned, she usually lays an egg that will grow into a clone of the mother, so Mothra lives on.

    • @t-rexcellentreviews1663
      @t-rexcellentreviews1663 Год назад +65

      Agreed, and the fact that his sacrifice had a lasting impact on Godzilla really makes this scene special, in the novelisation, he actually does recognise the doctor as one of the humans who has been following him for the last couple of years since he first saw him after he woke up from his battle with the Mutos, and when he realises the doctor gave his life so that he could defeat Ghidorah, Godzilla goes out of his way to honour and remember this single man, showing more care for Humanity by ordering the Titans to peaceful coexist with humans and help restore the planet, later in Godzilla: Dominion when he goes back to the ruins of his old lair, he even thinks that this is the place where he lived with humans and the place where one died for him, showing that the doctor final act is something he is not ever going to forget.

      @@wolfwing1 it would have been a nice idea, but ultimately pointless, the combination of intense heat, radiation and breathable air was already killing him, the bomb just sped up the process just like it sped up Godzilla’s healing, honestly, we can take heart in the fact though that the detonation DID spare him a lot of pain and at least allowed him to die with dignity.

    There are a few things from the original series that might help you understand some points in this movie:
    1) Mothra is benign and absolutely no threat to humans--this is why the Monarch staff are so comfortable around her. There is actually only one of her species and she endlessly reincarnates her mind via being reborn into the eggs she lays (eg. they are laid in safe areas and one will hatch where her current body dies).
    2) The Oxygen Destroyer is basically a super-nuke that kills all carbon-based life. King Ghidorah isn't carbon-based, so he's immune (he's silicon-based).
    3) The final scene is Godzilla using his most powerful attack, called a nuclear pulse. It was introduced in some of the 90s material and is only possible when he has fed on massive amounts of radiation and his internal temperature spikes. One new thing in this movie is, if you look and listen close, you see the Mothra wing pattern and hear the Mothra scream when he uses the pulse, suggesting that Mothra donated her power to him for the attack.
    The monsterverse is based mostly in the run of Godzilla where humans are the real villains of the story. Our destruction of the environment and just general meddling created all of these problems, and Godzilla is just leveling the scales.

    • @theprogressivecynic2407
      @theprogressivecynic2407 Год назад +6

      @@Urmomsdaddy1 There isn't a name for it. There are three general series:
      1) The original Japanese movies (which are divided into 4 eras: Showa, Heisei, TriStar and Millennium); this is where classic characters like Mothra and Rodan were introduced.
      2) The 1998 American movie continuum
      3) The Monsterverse series (which this is a part of)

    • @theprogressivecynic2407
      @theprogressivecynic2407 Год назад +4

      @@Urmomsdaddy1 No problem. There are some weird Kaiju from the original series that I hope make it into the Monsterverse. For example, Biollante is the result of an experiment that combines human, rose, and Godzilla cells--the result is a plant Kaiju triple Godzilla's size, which is absolutely impossible to kill because it turns into spores upon bodily destruction, and will eventually reform. It's just a feature of earth, and will become the dominant lifeform on the planet the moment a Godzilla isn't around to whack a mole it back into spores. A good percentage of the original series has an overriding message that humans messing with the environment and trying to play god results in horrific outcomes.

But, Mothra's special, considering she has also red, black and gold patterns in her wings. What a beautiful queen for Godzilla. It's also extremely awesome how they put a scientific spin on how Godzilla and Mothra are symbiotic species. One helps the other during their life cycles. Also, don't worry about Mothra. If they do with her character the same way as in the old Toho movies, then she always comes back. The old Mothra lays an egg, she dies, then that egg hatches into a Mothra clone, or rather a reincarnation of her own mother. She will continue to do this forever, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

    The director, Michael Dougherty, is such a massive kaiju fan and you can tell. Even the little things like the numbers of the Monarch outposts homage the debut years of the monsters. Outpost 54 is 1954 for Godzilla, 56 is for Rodan in 1956, and Mothra is 61 for 1961. The only exception is Ghidorah who is Outpost 32 when he debuted in 1964. It's 32 to homage The Thing, which had an Antarctic outpost labeled Outpost 31. Even Bear McCreary's score echoes both Godzilla and Mothra's original theme. I love his downright horror theme for Ghidorah. Also in the traditional lore, Mothra has two twin priestesses who communicate with her psychically but in the og movies, they are about a foot tall. The twin scientists in this are meant to serve as that role. I also love they kept Ghidorah's origin as an alien and is honestly my favorite depiction of his rivalry with Godzilla. It really makes him feel almost biblical especially regarding the scenes where they talk about how many cultures viewed him as their devil. Monster Zero is actually a reference to the alternate name an alien race has for Ghidorah in the 60s Godzilla film, Invasion of Astro Monster. Lastly, Serizewa sacrificing himself is an inverse of the original Godzilla where that Serizewa was forced to use the oxygen destroyer to kill Godzilla whereas its effects are inverted here.

    I think most people misunderstand Dr. Russel's plan. If Ghidora wasn't in the picture, the awakened monsters would have just followed Godzilla's lead. i.e. no mass destruction, just healing. However, she messed up by not carefully studying all of them like Monarch was doing to try to figure out which one's were good and which one's were bad. She wanted quick results in order to fix the climate emergency and to be fair, it would have been fine if it wasn't for Ghidora. And she can't be entirely blamed for not anticipating that one of the monsters was an alien which up until then, were not known to exist. She can be blamed for rushing though.

And showed an image of said weapon and it was not the design of the OG fans lost it. Also during comic con panel a fan asked about the OG music, and he said oh yeah we're gonna have it fans lost it. And man oh man did that music hit. Also the shot of Godzilla waking to the final battle has been parodied and shot to make it seem like he appears in end game x'D

    I LOVE that final kill shot Godzilla gives Ghidorah's remaining head at the end of the movie.
    Also Godzilla's Japanese name is Gojira. It's a combination of the Japanese words for gorilla (gorira) and whale (kujira). Godzilla absorbed the radiation from that nuke and grew from 355 feet to 394 feet. Mothra sacrifices herself and lends her energy to Godzilla as he entered his Thermonuclear form. What I love after the fight is that glare that Godzilla gave to Rodan. That was hands down a "bow down or die" look.

    Ghidorah is Godzilla’s equivalent to the Joker, and Godzilla always stops whatever he’s doing and immediately goes off to face him whenever Ghidorah is back on earth. It’s personal between them; the two absolutely hate each other.
    The next movie is so heavily edited and trimmed that it really feels like a lot of lost opportunities, but for what it promises - Godzilla vs Kong - it pulls out ALL the stops and delivers like no film has ever delivered. Can’t wait to see your reactions.

As a kid, I grew up with these monster movies and saw elements in this film from 2 old school films: Monster Zero which has aliens come "in peace", capture Godzilla and Rodan to take back to their planet to fend off Ghidorah, only to come back to earth with all 3 monsters under mind control tech built into their ship to conquer earth; then in Destroy All Monsters, all earth's monsters vs the "undocumented" alien Ghidorah.

    Alright, nerdy reference breakdown😂. Cause this movie is definitely a love letter to Godzilla. Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidorah are the three most popular of the old Toho monsters outside of Godzilla himself and the last time all four were on screen together was in 1968. The outpost numbers mostly correspond with the year each monster made their first appearance. Castle Bravo in the ocean is outpost 54; the first Godzilla came out in 1954. The base in the rainforest where Mothra hatches is outpost 61, Mothra came out in 1961. And the outpost in Mexico where Rodan breaks out is outpost 56 and Rodan came out in 1956. The only one that doesn't match this is for Ghidorah, because he was first introduced in 1964, but the outpost in Antarctica is 32. The oxygen destroyer that the military used to almost kill Godzilla in this movie is the weapon that actually did kill him in the original '54 movie. It works by destroying all oxygen in water, so any and all sea life will just suffocate. In that movie, the oxygen destroyer was invented by a Dr. Serizawa, but in that movie, he sacrificed himself to use it and kill Godzilla, whereas this movie's Serizawa sacrifices himself to save Godzilla. The title King of the Monsters is also what the '54 movie was called when it was released in America and in newspaper credits, one article is written by Steve Martin who was Raymond Burr's character that was added to the '54 movie when it came to America. My absolute favorite easter eggs are the three pieces of music that are taken from the old movies and reworked into this one. First is one of Godzilla's theme's which plays when he first breaks out of the ice to confront Ghidorah in Antarctica. The second, more famous theme which has been around since the very first movie and was used in nearly every movie that came out after 1989 was the track that played when he was resurrected and burst out of the water in front of the submarine. And lastly, Mothra's theme from the old movies was heard when she hatched out of her cocoon in the waterfall. And speaking of Mothra, in every movie she's been in, she's been accompanied by two very tiny twin priestesses. This movie works them in in the form of the two sisters, one of whom tells Mark that they're third generation Monarch and shows him pictures of her family, all of which depict two twin sisters in them. And there's two or three instancrs where they use Godzilla's roar from the old movies, the more high pitched one. You hear it once when Ghidorah pushes him into the hole in Antarctica and again when he shows up in Boston at the end. Godzilla glowing red is a reference to Burning Godzilla from the 1995 movie when his heart went into a nuclear meltdown and slowly melted his body from the inside out. The whole goal of that movie was to try to find a way to kill him before he exploded because such a blast would've destroyed the world. So there was a little nod to that with the thing at the end about Godzilla possibly going critical mass and exploding

    Only Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah are old school Godzilla monsters. All the others are original monsters created by Legendary. At the waterfall scene they show an older doctor who is the young Dr Brooks from Kong's movie. Also the twin doctors are an homage to the twin "fairies" from the old Mothra movies. If you watched the closing credits, you see several news stories how the monsters radiation is restoring the planet. If one of the monsters starts getting destructive, Godzilla is there to put them in their place.

    Dr. Russel's plan wasn't diabolical. If you see the end credits, you see news reports of Godzilla restoring marine life and keeping other Titans under control. Another titan, Mammoth restoring forests etc. None of the Titans are attacking humans. So her plan would've actually worked, if not for Gidorah. They didn't account for him being an alien species and not one that is part of the Earth ecosystem like Godzilla and the other titans. Thats why the Oxygen Destroyer doesn't kill him.

This is my favorite of the movies, because it's loosely based on the original 1964 "Ghirdorah the Three-Headed Monster" which has sentimental value to me. In 1999 (maybe 2000), I was given the VHS for my 9 or 10th birthday from my Great Grandmother (Died 2003) and Great Aunt. I still have the movie to this day. So for some things, Godzilla's red form is known as Burning Godzilla in the original series Burning Godzilla was formed when the Radiation in his body reached critical mass. In this form he not only had a stronger breath attack but his energy was practically erupting from his body. If he was left alone he would've exploded and caused an explosion powerful enough to take the earth with him. So they had to freeze his body to prevent this. Also fun fact in the movie involving Burning Godzilla the Oxygen destroyer was a key plot point as the monster he fought against was born from a unique mutation of the Oxygen destroyer and an ancient life form called Destroyah one of Godzilla's most powerful foes.
    Also in the series Mothra is more than just a giant silk worm it is in fact a deity, she is a benevolent and kind being who will gladly aid humans but she cares most for her followers. Twin fairies who serve as the voice of Mothra, Mothra typically after attaining her Imago form will lay an egg ensuring that even should she die there will be another Mothra to take her place. Also yes Mothra are typically all female there was only one male Mothra Mothra Leo who could be considered the most powerful out of all Mothra, Leo literally has the ability to travel through time.
    Finally King Ghidorah is a heavily recurring Villain for Godzilla and being one of the few monsters to give Godzilla a real run for his money. Also not sure if you noticed but the Ghidorah heads in this movie have distinct personalities. Finally in terms of numbers there are alot more than just 17 monsters in the old series. In fact the monsters here that are from the old series are only Godzilla, Ghidorah, Kong, Mothra and Rodan the rest of the monsters here are completely brand new.
