You are just a guy in a room expressing your thoughts. But then again, they are extremely well-thought-out and well-versed thoughts/information/opinions that do not feel forced in any way possible. They're purely informative and you do an amazing job of summarizing the articles found in the description. I really like listening to you and the approach you take to fashion journalism. Happy I found your channel and I am looking forward to you next video.
Я в мохнатые года смотрела "тед" и там говорили что сигарета 🚬 идеальное изобретение из-за того, что она вещественна, ее можно потрогать, она пахнет, она горит Мне кажется с модой тоже самое. Рей права.
I'm a visual artist and in the past studied both fashion and photography. You make a whole lot of sense here, as soon as you allow others to pull and push you, to be influenced by other work and artists, to listen to criticism then you are not making your work. I'm fascinated by Rei, somehow she's remained untouched, here is a pure expression, I see her work as soft sculpture on bodies. I find what is fashionable or fashion so interesting, an x element beyond the idea or construction, a desirability, an excitement surrounding something new. Thank you for sharing some fascinating ideas.
Thank you for posting. Im japanese. I'm studying haute couture history and ready-to-wear(pronto da indossare). There are few videos that explain ready-to-wear. I can't thank you enough.
Glad that you mentioned cdg's incredible advertisements. Some of my favorites don't even show the clothing, or people even. I think a lot fashion photography and advertising is pretty bland and uninteresting these days. It would be refreshing to see more brands push the boundaries of what fashion photography and campaigns can be.
I love how you touched on the novelty Rei strives for and how in fashion, especially, it is very refreshing to see creativity without reference points. I am now realizing the strength of these recent collections and how they rely on their ability to make a statement that appeals to the unknown and uncomfortable. You don’t miss 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻
My tutor that’s doing his ma at csm said same thing about going finding your own research through reading opposed to any technology it’s so true that everyone is just influenced by the same thing reason why Pinterest is evil in that respect
It does create the best results for anyone tho it’s a day and night difference in historical data consumption, people before 2000 didn’t have the internet so any history good chance the people righting about their times did it in their book of choice it’s like airplane is a completely different style of comedy to any comedy today that well we might not ever see anything like that again
Man I really like your way of viewing the world (of fashion) and I’m thoroughly enjoying your videos. Especially the last part about everyone becoming the same is resonating heavily. Please keep making these cause they aren’t only therapeutically beneficial for you but I’m sure many others that share your point of views. Love from Belgium!
The source of creativity of rei you analyses is correct I do feel like that too when I studied geography about 1st source of whatever then to 2nd as money or food, then 3rd is architectures, etc… very solid bro! I had that idea for that such a long time for rei but I don’t know how to articulate it to make people understand.
I feel like instead of trying to understand Rei’s work we instead just understand it as just Rei, for example if another fashion designer does something like Rei’s work we can just call it rei Basically making Rei a term in fashion for kawakubo’s work
Loved this video. Your last few statements about orginality and creativity are super important and definitely something a lot of people, including me lmao, need to be reminded of!
i love that quote from Another Magazine! Glad you mentioned it. I remember staring at the page when I read it for the first time. She rarely does interview so it was a special issue! ❤️❤️😊
One of the later points you noted, about globalization, and how we are all using the same reference points, influences in all of ur thought processes, how we should try things outside of Pinterest and other obvious “inspirational” sources - I would love to hear more on what you think about this. I’ve been struggling to rework my personal style to fit myself better lately. Because it’s just like, idk, I think it’s bc of how social media and endless access is set up, my style has become more scattered, like oh I like this this this this this this this and this. But it’s not cohesive, it’s not telling a story (my story) anymore, unless by accident. But I used to do this naturally. Before there were endless scrolling and seeking options
Men, do not hesitate for one moment to put a restraining order against your female partner if you feel your safety and health is in jeopardy. Placing a permanent restraining order on my female partner was absolutely the wisest protective move of my adult lifetime. My only regret is not doing it years earlier. Men, be safe!
wow, there is an equivalent to outsider art in music, called outsider music in fact, similar description where these people know nothing about music and go ahead to make music, very interesting. i find the knowledge of this to be very helpful in music making or life in general, to know that nothing you can make in its entirety can truly be completely original
Hey, I don't know how much other "media" than fashion you consume, but here's an idea for a video. Any charachters from tv/film/anime/whatever whose style you really like?
not to be #thatguy and I know this is extremely tangential to your point but... arguably, there *is* an aesthetic dimension to selection factors in evolution. Take the example that you used: flowers. They evolved to disperse genetic material with the help of a pollinator species so the color and scents they have developed in tandem to what attracts a specific animal. To the point, where orchids sometimes mimic a sexed member of a species to seduce the opposite sex! how can flowers seduce if they don't have taste!??
i think your most poignant critique..or rather..thought in this video is the phrase "deeply unsatisfying comfort." i think this will echo in my brain for some time.
"There is no pleasure in the work" Well she has succeeded. Not a single piece shown brought me any joy or enjoyment. There was a couple silhouettes that were pleasant if you ignore every other element at play from texture to pattern. I like the sound of her as a person a lot, she sounds strong, interesting, and comforting in a way as a person. But her work is...I don't see a point to its existence. I dislike it all and find it ugly in an uninteresting way. I wonder how she would feel about this? Its fascinating to really love someone's vision & voice (what she expresses in the interviews she hates doing) and not enjoy their work. Maybe that's part of its point and the new experience it brings.
What looks to be very conflicting about Rei's mindset is that it is virtually impossible for a human being to produce an original thought from a void (or the void, whatever). A mind needs to process things in order to arrive at a thought, and that just simply means that the mind received input from somewhere - it had a reference. While it's definitely much much more understandable now with Rei's frustration of not achieving pure blissful unreferenced creative naivete, it would still not sound wise for her to willfully blind herself from the fact her work seems to still manage to have connections and associations to various places and aspects in reality, even if she wants to believe they have come to her from nowhere. In this case, it would probably come off as just a coincidence, but at that point, it just sounds like pretentiousness being excused collection after collection.
loved this video but i really feel like you cannot mention granny Rei without mentioning Yohji at least for the early years and collections i feel like understanding rei completely if someone tried they would need to touch on yohji as well and especially at the time when their views started shifting like rei focus on the new and yohji looking to the past for inspo or rei dubbing red the new black and making a statement towards yohji
Wow I have no words. This isn't fashion and I don't think she wants anyone to think it is. Reminds me of that schitzofrenic Yayoi Kusama with bright colored polka dots arts and also on the other end of spectrum from Rei, Iris Van Perin whose work is fantastic in kinetic art sense but mostly unwearable in true sense of clothing. These are truly creepy and wired stuff that should be shown in modern art musicum next to Picasso or something.
She has been the best before I even really understood clothes I remember the first time I saw her work (knew nothing about her) I connected instantly on a spiritual level and called her mom in my head lol... I stopped wearing Play in 2008 and won't comment on that part of the brand bcuz the thought of Hypebeast or w/e consuming Rei's work and output actually does trigger me (funny I'm not a gatekeeper or snob with anything else not even things like hamcus, basketcase, etc...) I remember walking into Dover Street in Hamcus and some other shxt and basically almost getting hired on the spot... then about a year or 2 later while sleeping on the floor I thought to myself it would be really cool if I could work there and got called in for an interview the next day off a craigslist ad lol (retail is an insult to my type of brain output but if I was going to be in retail anywhere then I had no problem taking it on the chin at DSM) I came with an actual piece of quality creative work about 4 by 4 feet (I ended up selling at a later date for 4 figures+ not bad for the underdog) and an outfit that said I know more about clothes than you do/hire me I was so excited I could barely form any sentences and bombed lmao I have a tumultuous relationship with DSM but still smile like a kid in a candy store every time I'm there. I think if I met her I would break down was a bit teary-eyed watching this but as a natural creative I can't help it she's done so much for all of us regardless of our medium. Thank You, Rei. 🙏🏾
Complacency in confort is the mother of all stagnation, Rei Kawakubo is the living example of that theory, uncompromising, unique, challenging, confronting and raw like the finishings of her garments, utterly beautiful in all it's imperfection and ugliness, she is the real embodiment of what art should be, looking at the past without referencing it or as a source of inspiration ......................kudos to your work and insights, you have indeed a bright future, extremely refreshing to see a young person like yourself having such an understanding and grasp of the fashion industry .................Congratulations indeed.
And for the record, I always read the description boxes, I usually love to read how a creator summises their work
I read details
Your channel is dope
I think the inconsistency between collections is the consistency of Comme des Garcons

This is one of the most satisfying comments I have read online.
I'm so joyous that someone finally recognized how digital fashion takes the magic out of traditional fashion.

Bit of a tangent
@@zacstarkey1369 bro, ever heard of punctuation?
Bro trolling French in every video💀
I love your perspective. Rei and Yohji were the most daring designers during my first years in NY. Keep creating and voicing your opinion.

I loved the honesty in this video, by far the most interesting and thought provoking you've made. tytyty 🤩
I think cdg play is exactly what it needs to be. If it was anymore in-depth it would be too mainline
I love how much research there's in every single one of your videos, love them
