  • I cringed for every time I said the letter 'p' in this video. This pop filter does not work well and I'm bad at holding the microphone still, oh well.
    The title is clickbait but acceptable clickbait in my opinion. This is my subjective opinion of course.
    Maybe I should upload these at more reasonable hours.

    The purpose of this video isn't to actually prove why fashion is objectively the greatest form of art, obviously art is subjective and I say at the end that fashion is objectively the best and worst. I just want to highlight fashion as an art form as it's most often overlooked as utilitarian, and also highlight the process behind it that people may not have been aware of. This is a video I would have liked to have seen when I was younger so that's its purpose. Not a systematic breakdown of fashion's qualities compared to other arts. Yes the title is clickbait, but watch Veritasium's video about clickbait if you want to know my justification for clickbait. Thanks for watching, I hope you were entertained and also might have learned something!

    I’ll chime in here and say Cinema should be the greatest art form as it combines all forms in one. Music, fashion , moving picture (in a way is like painting)… Cinema is the current form that moves people and allows people to help their lives. Which I think is true definition of art

      In a sense, could it not also be argued that Video Games are the greatest art form ? As it possesses everything cinema does BUT it also ✨combines✨ it with an extra element: interactability ! You cannot actively control and shift around the story characters aesthetic choices (visual & audio wise) etc in film for example but you can in video games

    • @khris461
      @khris461 Год назад +7

      @@albinocify it could however at the end of the day. In the game, your actions are predetermined. There’s a great RUclips channel called Cinema Cartography who do an episode on “are video games art” and one point is that in a game such as last of us 2 regardless of your choices the outcomes are the same. Even if in a game that has multiple endings, it’s the fact that the endings all has actions that lead to a predetermined ending. There’s no live action playability so to speak.
      Because if you go on what you are saying then in that case a film like “Clue” with multiple endings or the Netflix Black Mirror interactive episode could apply which to most agree that it’s just an entertainment simulator. Not saying games can’t be meaningful but cinema has “when good” a less gimmicky film to me when viewing and thinking rather than a game which more than often opt for entertainment and playable simulation then an art medium. I hope that makes sense, apologies for my English.

      I think my personal issue with cinema is that it's always a huge time sink, making and consuming it. It's also something that stays on a screen and doesn't exist in real everyday life. Cinema has a greater impact on the masses while fashion is much more individual.

      @@fashionlover4 it’s a good statement however personally I think the role of art should help people be able to live life better and thus if it can reach masses it means more people are able to get through life better at a higher level. It makes it very important to reach large audiences so they can be able to live a more meaningful life if the art they’re consuming has good moral value, which is a topic for whole other conversation about morals and art.

Although fashions unique selling point is that everyone has to partake in it, I feel like the majority of people dress just to be clothed, whereas when people paint its giving them a feeling, when people make music they're curating a feeling, the same can't be said whenever people wear clothes which is what you described as fashion. Also, when you're describing the garment making process, I feel like the same can be said for practically any artform but really enjoyed the vid. And you've convinced me to give sewing another try so ty!

    Fashion is an art form in the same way cooking is. It is primarily a utility and only really considered a creative medium at a certain echelon or level of acclaim. They can provide nourishment, comfort and connection but ultimately fail (even at their highest level often) to transcend into zeitgeist defining work that can dramatically shift culture such as Film, Music or at times Fine art.

    • @jodyisthatyou4296
      @jodyisthatyou4296 Год назад

      @mace wystan I appreciate the perspective. The ultimate point I'm making is that it's hard to make the case for fashion as a zeitgeist defining work of art at the same level of others when the average person you would meet on the street does not frame it in that way. If I was speaking to someone and asked them what were the era defining artworks of their youth there is a very slim chance anyone is going to mention a fashion show, piece of clothing, editorial etc. That does not mean it is not relevant or significant but it does illustrate that it does not operate on the same level as a text as other media in the consciousness of the masses.

      @@jodyisthatyou4296 "but ultimately fail (even at their highest level often) to transcend into zeitgeist defining work that can dramatically shift culture such as Film, Music"
      As a fashion student, I completely disagree with this analysis. Fashion is definitely more able to invoke emotion, explore concepts and affect the public consciousness than cooking. In fact I'd argue fashion is better at defining culture than any other medium of art. cinema, music etc. is often recognisable by period from two factors in my opinion - fashion within it, and technology used to create it. Most art such as painting, while recognizable by era to the trained eye, are not easily recognisable by period to the layman, whereas pretty much everyone could tell whether a movie was set in the 40s, 50s, or 60s based on the outfits of the characters alone, purely because as said in the video, people take part in fashion regardless of whether they intend to or not. Would the layman be able to tell you which of those decades certain paintings came from? I doubt it.
      While I get what you're saying that the average joe doesn't know what margiela collection did what, you can't seriously tell me that, for instance, Ossie clark's designs in the 60s didn't reflect and affect the cultural atmosphere at the time. So yes, the specifics are not known to the average person, but the innovations of cutting edge designers trickle down through the culture to affect the average joe who isnt into fashion eventually
      Im not arguing fashion is the best artform, in fact I personally think music is the purest art form, but I think fashion is often overlooked and undervalued as an art form, to the point most non-enthusiasts don't consider it an art form at all

    • @jodyisthatyou4296
      @jodyisthatyou4296 Год назад

      @@gpu213 I appreciate your thoughtful response and agree with the fact that it is undervalued generally. To be clear, I'm not coming at this from the standpoint of someone who does not have skin in the game: I've worked as a stylist and designer for years.
      I'm not arguing that fashion cannot represent an era, ideas etc and be effective. The "layman" does not consider fashion to be art or is particularly engaged with the construct outside of putting outfits on every day and deciding to what extent they engage with trends. I feel this is prohibitive to considering it the artistic medium that best defines an era. I would also argue that music, art, film and economic conditions shape fashion at writ large more than vice versa although in some instance the opposite can be true (viv westwood and sex pistols).
      The food analogy is primarily a means to speak to framing of the endeavors with regards to consumption and utility. I generally agree that fashion generally does a better job than cuisine at speaking to a place and time.

    sick vid as always, and I definitely agree that a huge perk of fashion is its universality of impact, but for me where I find fashion falls somewhat shorter than other forms of art like film or literature is in effecting its audience emotionally cos i find myself feeling less strong emotions as a result of contact with fashion than say with movies or books. but then again i would say that the best fashion is fashion that evokes that kind of strong emotion, and the emotion doesn't even have to be deep like sadness or anger, it can simply be humour or fun. but idk i guess whats good about art is that because of its huge intersectionality we dont have to decide a greatest form and we can appreciate all forms of it together as well as separately. but fundamentally i think art shld make its viewer think and feel and i think fashion is very successful at prompting thought, but making its audience feel is less common (but when done well is insane)

    • @Lv-sg4zp
      @Lv-sg4zp Год назад +1

      That’s a great point. Some designers have done work that evokes emotion like that. I think Alexander McQueen is a good example. Personally, the last time I really felt deep emotion watching a fashion show was during the Chanel 2010’s shows, when Karl Lagerfeld was still around. They invested so much on the scenery that it really felt like we’re inside a movie or an interactive play while watching. Maybe the scenery or the runway in itself is a big factor to make people feel like that, when it’s well done

      Thanks for your insight and I definitely agree. I think fashion has become quite disconnected to art for many people unfortunately as people are too caught up in practicality and also their own image. Fashion exists everywhere in our lives so I think it's easy to see it as very utilitarian but I think the best way it shows that it's not is when we see fashion in real life that we're not comfortable with. It always evokes a reaction!

    After reading a couple comments under this video , the fan base you have is one of the more intellectual on the platform. I love fashion and I somewhat agree however after reading some different perspectives and opinions I would argue cinema and or games are the most broadest form and two categories of art that cover nearly every aspect of art itself. While I myself am the biggest fan of fashion as an art form. Painting to me requires a level of skill and creativity that fashion does not rival even remotely. Simply do to the infinite possibilities that one can create on a blank canvas. Fashion is becoming extremely popular however I do feel as if the highest level of fashion is still very niche and most people who do enjoy it do not get pass the surface level of it.

    I'm not really into the whimsical side of fashion but 7:09 tweaking the pattern is something that I've been doing for years...
    In order to create garments with the least amount of seams (I don't enjoy _sewing_ ) the least amount of bulk and for the garment to have full range movement (compatible with nudity) I'm close to mastering the art of placing pattern pieces together in unconventional ways in order to achieve my objectives.
    Slight variations in the grain that the fabric is cut renders flexibility in areas of the garment that are sometimes to ridged for full range movement.
    I've never used CAD because areas like the underarm, crotch and rise are areas on a pattern that must be _felt_ in order to know if the fit is compatible with movement.....
    also _verticle_ measurements seem to be ignored in ready to wear clothing. At this point I make around 85% of the clothes I _wear_ .... including winter outerwear.

  • @gpu213

    The way I see it, every art form has different strengths, and you could rank each art form based on which areas they are strong in. For instance off the top of my head, the categories could include: Self expression, aesthetics, cultural/social commentary, abstract meaning, storytelling, emotion.
    there could be more but based on this, you could say that fashion is no.1 for self expression, fairly high for aesthetics, and social commentary, but weaker in emotiveness and storytelling. Whereas Cinema is high in storytelling, emotiveness and social commentary but weaker in abstract meaning and self expression. Or Painting is high in abstract meaning, self expression and social commentary but weaker in storytelling.
    Not saying that fashion can't tell stories at all, or that cinema can't have self expression, but I just mean thats what the medium is geared most toward portraying. So it's "easier" to create fashion that is aesthetically beautiful but its easier to create a film that tells a story.

    To me, the marketing and branding of fashion is the most brilliant part, because objectively literally anyone can make 'art', right? but it takes a curation of that art to make it digestible enough for an audience. In literally any form of art. Marina Abromovich wasn't the only artist doing performance art and Billy Childish isnt the only painter, but both of them had exceptional friends and collaborators who helped them decide what works to put out when to get the best reaction/response from the audience. Same with fashion, the creation of clothes will never be enough unless they are presented in a way that causes a reaction, mostly emotional, to the audience which inevitably drive product demand. Sometimes this is from the catwalk as marketing, like Thom Browne who basically never sells anything like his catwalk collections, or if its from traditional media pushing pretty standard clothing like Gucci (now at least, not when Alessandro started), or a mixture of the two like Westwood/Rick/Yohji, but whichever way you push it, I think its arguably the most talented part of a fashion business

      I think it can be annoying and very inauthentic, especially in this social media age and especially for small businesses but I do think it's still an interesting side to fashion and obviously very important. You're right that creating a narrative around your art like a brand is the hardest part but when I said artists generally dislike it, I meant more the menial tasks of promoting your work.
      I might make a video behind branding because it's a very interesting idea, thanks for your insight!

    • @understitchYT
      @understitchYT Год назад

      @@fashionlover4 It certainly can be inauthentic, definitely, I think theres a lot to be said about how tiktok is changing the online scope of branding to be more human-focused than ever before, but for a brand or a company thats larger than a solo artist making one off pieces for friends/etsyshop/followers etc its important to have, understand and utilise a narrative so you dont alienate loyal customers. Its the same reason YT channels tend to need to be on one topic or online shops tend to sell one sort of thing, so that consumers know where to go when they want to engage with that specific media.
      Saying that, I agree that its really crappy that artists sort of need to have that aspect these days, because really they should feel free to just create like they did before it evolved to the atmosphere we have now where its more like everyone for themselves. It no longer takes a whole team to build a business; because we have access to a way to do it ourselves, we are expected to do so and overwork to do it. Really it boils down to the individualistic consumerist society in which we live now

    I'm not sure fashion is the greatest form of art, I like the observations but personally wouldn't elevate clothing to no 1 above other art forms. It's certainly an interesting and often very complex process to visualise, manufacture and then wear essentially an idea. Fashion can say and do many things but equally has many limitations as in it needs to be worn, it largely needs to be made of fabric, it needs to be able to be cleaned etc. A fashion show often pulls in many other elements, music, lighting, atmosphere etc, which give the clothes more context, more drama, more more. Most people wear clothes yes and so maybe everyone should find fashion interesting, relevant to themselves, exciting etc but I think he disconnect is that (sweeping I know) the shows focus on the look of the worn garment whereas most consumers (I guess) also consider or indeed prioritise the practicality, is it warm, will it keep me dry, will it be comfortable etc. Hummm interesting, I like your ideas very much, thank you for sharing.

    I agree fashion is a great art but painting as well does the same thing, painting will always be a associated with the designer, and many painters have created worldwide talking points of what the painting is conveying(more of the older paintings cuz the modern paintings are laughable for the most part), essentially painting does the same thing 😂

      And I’m all for fashion, because I want to be a fashion designer myself in the future, but I think everything you’ve said about fashion can be applied to painting as well

    Something that is mass-produced can't be art, by definition. That's why a piece of art can sell for 500 million, but mass-produced pants or shirts won't.

      @@harrys919 Art prints also doesn't sell for hundreds of millions for the same reason, but they can sell for more than most other things, partly because it's limited edition, and partly because they are prints of something that itself is a singular artwork that already exist in the world and which confers value back on the prints.

      So if i only make one of a sculpture it is art, but if i make a copy of that sculpture it invalidates not only the second, but the original as well? How does that make sense

    • @magnuskarlsson8655
      @magnuskarlsson8655 Год назад

      @@gpu213 I didn't say that. In fact, I said the opposite: the original and singular art work gives value to the prints, and the prints in turn give value - by making it more popular etc. - to the original and singular art work. That's how prints can sell for absurd amounts, but not as much as singular art works. What people pay for, more than anything, and what makes it one of the best investments, is exclusivity - to have something no one else has access to.

      Wall art is often mass produced (not just prints). There's no way these aren't art, they're literally called art.
