That's exactly right! All those stats about good economy are just stats tricks, and US is not alone in it. Many indicators show there is a lot of money flowing around, but what good it's gonna do when it's never enough to buy a home for a young family. I am a European, but I consider American exceptionalism to be a factual thing. Fun fact: Mississippi, that Maher mentioned, has around 3 million people and a nominal GDP of 140 billion dollars. My country, Croatia, has around 3,5 million people and a GDP of around 80 billion dollars. In other words, the poorest American state out of 50 of them has a living standard twice as high than a developed country from south-central Europe! Does America have problems that need to be fixed? Absolutely. But Americans have no idea how good they have it and the fact that all of that was achieved in only 250 years proves what kind of geniuses created America and how productive and energetic Americans are.
In America, 90% of that GDP is distributed to the top 10% of the population. The average GDP is $85,000, the median GDP is closer to $39,000. Bill's stats are INCREDIBLY misleading. He's relying on the economic illiteracy of his viewers to make his point. Also, in America, 10% of the population owns 90% of the stock market: the stock market being up doesn't help working families at all.
@@abhinavsrivastav8677 That was John C. Bogle's vision: a stock market that helped everyone. He is the man who is most responsible for democratizing stock ownership and providing the tools needed to be successful at investing to the masses who are on strict time and capital limitations. Bogle considered stock ownership the best possible way for the common man to get his fair share of the nation's immense wealth. 90% of the market being owned by 10% of the country is a hell of a lot more democratic and equal than it was 50 years ago, when Bogle and Vanguard started the index fund revolution.
I think the trouble the Democrats had with the economy question was that it’s tough to hear the stats are goods when you are not experiencing it. Elitists telling you are doing well when you know you are not does not fly.

Yes, paycheck to paycheck is because the benefits of a great economy have gone mostly to the wealthy. The big Trump tax cut for the wealthy, and the Republican-pushed end to campaign finance laws, have helped give the wealthy an even better chokehold on the economy. Biden started a lot of things that will help, but it takes awhile. Remember that a lot of Democrats who voted for Obamacare lost their jobs, because it was so unpopular then. @Ron-Ayres you are so out of touch, which is my point. Do you honestly believe people who are struggling to pay rent or buy groceries or afford fuel to get back and forth to work care about what the data on inflation is or how much profit one company made? Come to back to reality
@@corpsesofliberty3661 I agree that referrring to nebulous, abstract, and vague topics like 'the economy' or 'democracy' is not even a remotely helpful way to talk to voters struggling to put food on the table. I _do_ understand living on the breadline from sustained firsthand experience, so slightly hurt at your assumption that I'm out of touch or don't live in reality, when I feel I live a stark reality, honestly much starker than I'd like. Getting by each day is - like countless others - all I can manage rn. At the same time, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect voters to understand that the direct source of our pain is the supermarkets - or any other business, oil company, utility or energy company - all callously increasing prices, actively hurting their own customers, while laughing all the way to the bank and record profits. Voting is an obvious and clear way to voice our anger and strike against the deep unfairness of living through such grinding poverty every single day. But to be angry at Biden's administration for the supermarket making record profits from my misery, just strikes me as being angry at the wrong entity. That's displaced anger, looking for a place to rest, projected towards someone that isn't the cause of my feeling. Anyhoo, go well. Tomorrow is another day...
@@Ron-Ayres Ron, it’s clear that you're well-educated, and I am as well. So, I’m wondering if I should feel insulted by these strawman arguments being put forward. No one’s angry at the supermarkets themselves; the frustration is directed at the outsourcing of American industry and jobs to other countries. When China is no longer willing to absorb massive tariffs, Americans will be compelled to produce and purchase our own goods or source them from actual allies. PRO TIP: Now might be a good time to start a business that China currently has market domination. This, of course, is a simplified outline of a broader strategy aimed at reversing decades of economic decline in the U.S. If you’re trying to trace when the American Dream began to fade, it’s when we handed over key industries to the CCP and outsourced to third-world nations. Reclaiming control over our production could be a crucial step toward restoring it. Analogy: Blue is looking at the battlefield from 1000 feet above, but Red is looking at it from 5000ft.
@rabbit251 you know that has been done in communist countries and socialist country's before correct? It buried the country. It is the worst idea to try it again. Then The Government gives "hand outs" that are worth less than the money that the middle class would have earned if taxes had not been raised on the "upper class".

That's exactly right! All those stats about good economy are just stats tricks, and US is not alone in it. Many indicators show there is a lot of money flowing around, but what good it's gonna do when it's never enough to buy a home for a young family.
I know people in Germany who, both college educated, employed for many years now, don't even think about buying a property for themselves in the city they live in as it costs way too much. I imagine a lot of americans are in the same situation.

They know how much their grocery and gas bill is every month, and they've seen it get worse everyday. If you don't want to learn that lesson, hey, that's fine. His point is that if the average American did understand some basic economics, they would realize that the things you described, now improving, could get worse again if the policies that are being proposed actually get passed, *probably won't because at least big businesses know better and will lobby congress to ignore the idea of deporting their cheap laborers. In 1970, the average American man living in LA would earn on average, 10k a year and could buy a house for only 30k. That is an income to asset ratio of 1:3. In 2024, the average home price in suburban LA is 915k and the average income is 76k, that is an income to asset ratio 1:12. As you can see, the wages have increased but the essential assets one needs to create a life for himself have increased far more. The 'American dream" used to be a real and attainable prospect. Now it is just a pipe dream from a bygone era. Boomers like Bill Maher, however intelligent he may be, gives you one half of the story while conveniently omitting the other half. The raw truth is that a large cohort of young Americans feel hopeless and yearn to return to a past age, an age where their parents could get by far easier than they currently can.

In America, 90% of that GDP is distributed to the top 10% of the population. The average GDP is $85,000, the median GDP is closer to $39,000. Bill's stats are INCREDIBLY misleading. He's relying on the economic illiteracy of his viewers to make his point. @@corpsesofliberty3661 I agree that referrring to nebulous, abstract, and vague topics like 'the economy' or 'democracy' is not even a remotely helpful way to talk to voters struggling to put food on the table. It bears no relation to the way I think, feel, and talk about life every day.

Voting is an obvious and clear way to voice our anger and strike against the deep unfairness of living through such grinding poverty every single day. But to be angry at Biden's administration for the supermarket making record profits from my misery, just strikes me as being angry at the wrong entity.
Yeah, because the working class listened to Trump instead of the facts. The truth is inflation was caused by Trump's shutting down the country. We were better off 4 years ago? No, 4 years ago the country was shutdown, people were buying toilet paper in droves, we had mass graves, we had hospitals full of people sick and dying. So no, let's not play that game ever because the truth is No.
Always has been.
I was gonna say, does he not know about inflation?? he didnt even touch around the subject

Rent sure as hell isn’t down. My rent went up about 10%
Trump actually invest his money in real estate speculation that drives rent up. They use to invest in malls but now buy houses and apartments in block investments.
How would trump fix that?
statistics deals with averages, it only matters whether rent is up or down in swing states
That next. Also it's being propped up by an evil algorithim. Theres a doc on it the channel "more perfect union" i think...somebody correct me if im wrong.. Insidious stuff.
That’s good to know. You’re one statistical point. Data, which shows rents are falling, has many, many such points and they’re going down.

I don't think you understand what GDP per capita means Bill, it doesn't mean how much money you totally have. It means how much economic output + taxes you contribute to the economy. While it is used as a metric for standard of living, it doesn't capture the entire picture.
Also it's an average that doesn't factor in wealth inequality. Bill is basically telling us to stop complaining about the economy because the rich people are doing better than ever
Carrie, which side caused, promotes, and… dare I say it?… wants a wealth disparity?
Yeah the rich people really skew that number upwards. Most people don't make anywhere near 89k a year. I'm recently had to take a pay cut to make only 40k this year.

Even in a good economy, some people struggle. There's no reason to believe you'd be doing better today if Trump had been elected in 2020. It probably would have taken longer to get Covid under control, the supply chain problems would have been worse, inflation would have been worse, and we probably would have had a recession. Trump was terrible at handling crises. He had a good first three years only because he was handed a strong economy from Obama.

I’ll also say that unemployment figure either isn’t true or isn’t great. I recently lost my job and have been having to fight in the job search arena, so I’ve been struggling a lot and been doing a lot of research as to why I can’t get a job. Part of the reason unemployment is so low is because we have lots of people currently underemployed and also lots of people quitting the workforce in frustration because they can’t find jobs. You can tell me inflation hasn’t really affected me much, but I know my go-to cheap meals that used to cost 88 cents now cost $3. Don’t get me wrong, I think Trump’s tagline of MAGA is a bit condescending and discounts how America really is still great in many ways, but please don’t lie to me and gaslight me by telling me things are great that aren’t great. I am not technically unemployed, I’m underemployed, so I’m not included in the unemployment number, but I made $25, 827 last year from my new job that I started on January 3rd. If it weren’t for my vacation payout I got when I lost my last job I would be homeless and starving right now, and even working full time and lots of overtime this year, I’m still on the verge of it. And I know plenty of other people dealing with similar circumstances. Just because you are privileged enough not to be dealing with it, it doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
Doesn’t matter now. MAGA won. GG enjoy the ride
- Billy, average numbers are lies, you know better yet you say these things. One multi-trillionaire does not make everyone a millionaire.
That is correct, but what is also correct is that YOU will pay for the tariffs not us in Europe and they will increase inflation, even Leon Musk has admitted that.
