Those are the same people. The people you meet in real life ARE those on twitter. It's all about filter and civility. People have it in the real world, they drop it on line. The Mike Tyson quote is THE quote for the 21st century. “Social media made y'all way too comfortable with disrespecting people and not getting punched in the face for it.” It comes down to this, people are safe posting on the internet, they aren't safe in the real world. So people, long ago developed ethics...a filter....if you will, on what to say and what not to say around other people. But those filters don't apply to anonymous posts on the internet.
I'm conservative and my wife is liberal and we get along just fine. Our home is balanced and we respect one another's views. Blows my mind how much hate everybody has for one another over it. There are crazies on both sides of the line and in every facet of society, that doesn't mean everyone is!

In this country, you have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers that I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to but they’ll get used to it very quickly. And it’s not going to stop them from doing business with us, but they’ll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we’re talking about, including child care, that it’s gonna take care. We’re gonna have - I, I look forward to having no deficits within a fairly short period of time. Coupled with, uh, the reductions that I told you about on waste and fraud and all of the other things that are going on in our country - because I have to say with child care, I want to stay with child care, but those numbers are small relative to the kind of economic numbers that I’m talking about, including growth.

I'm a U.S. Air Force Veteran. I didn't retire from the military (I only served for 11 years), though I'm retired now. I miss the days when people of differing ideologies could disagree, yet not hate the other person for their views. I you want to change someone views, fine. Lay out your views. Disagree with them, sure, but don't denigrate them. If you do that, you're going about trying to change their minds all wrong. That only makes them cling to and defend their beliefs even more. As Bill said, the actual democratic politicians are sane, reasonable, rational people who mostly speak respectfully and urge people to find compromise and focus on solutions. IOW, boring. GOP politicians have largely abandoned that because it's boring and doesn't get them views and donations. Thank god democratic politicians haven't gone down the same road but the incentives suggest they probably will at some point. People are bored with sanity and rationality and courtesy and respect. They want drama, controversy, and conflict. Social media provides that in spades, and now GOP politicians do too. It may be just a matter of time before Democratic politicians follow suit.

They don't come out in vigorous support of freedom of expression for the arts or free speech for political opposition or against censorship in news and social media. It's a problem with the microphone placement. The audience is fairly distant from the stage so they mic the crowd. Whoever is doing it is always keying on one or two individuals which makes them seem overly present and too loud. Poor sound design.

I always say that true American liberals shouldn't just be protesting systemic racism or corruption in the government and corporate spheres. They should be defenders of free speech and expression and be willing to criticize regressive ideas like jihadism without shirking away for fear of others calling them "racist" or "Islamophobic". Personally, I identify as a moderate, but I share more liberal ideas than a lot of people on the left. I you want to change someone views, fine. Lay out your views. Disagree with them, sure, but don't denigrate them. If you do that, you're going about trying to change their minds all wrong. That only makes them cling to and defend their beliefs even more.

As Bill said, the actual democratic politicians are sane, reasonable, rational people who mostly speak respectfully and urge people to find compromise and focus on solutions. IOW, boring. GOP politicians have largely abandoned that because it's boring and doesn't get them views and donations. Thank god democratic politicians haven't gone down the same road but the incentives suggest they probably will at some point. People are bored with sanity and rationality and courtesy and respect. They want drama, controversy, and conflict. Social media provides that in spades, and now GOP politicians do too. It may be just a matter of time before Democratic politicians follow suit.

I always say that true American liberals shouldn't just be protesting systemic racism or corruption in the government and corporate spheres. They should be defenders of free speech and expression and be willing to criticize regressive ideas like jihadism without shirking away for fear of others calling them "racist" or "Islamophobic". Liberals used to have the starting point of assuming that people do NOT have ill intent, that every human being is owed a basic minimum amount of respect and human dignity, and that dehumanization of any sort only ever leads to degrading humanity as a whole. Yes, speak out against the ills of society and problems facing those within it, but do so in a manner where opposition is heard and afforded the chance to express themselves.
Losing this mindset is how atrocities have ended up being carried out by people who are certain their truth is more important than anything and who fervently believe in their own superiority.
