As a college professor, I see most incoming college students are totally unprepared to survive college - and even less prepared for life. College are not doing much better at preparing students - and they are charging more and more for less and less useful 'education.' In the pre-Reagan years, Unions were the path to the Middle Class and America had a strong middle class that strengthened our economy. In the post-Reagan years, Unions were largely 'busted' and Higher Ed said "We'll be the path to the Middle Class" and our Middle Class has shrunk consistently in the past 3 decades.
In 1976 America was tied with Denmark on the GINI coefficient of income/wealth disparity. Denmark has been #1 on the Democracy Index (USA is 29th), #1 on the Press Freedom Index (USA is 55th), and #1on the Happiness Index. America's media monopoly calls Capitalist Democracies in Europe socialist. EDEN is the ticker symbol for the Capitalist Democracy Denmark and America reached parity with EDEN 200 years after it was born. Then trickle down Feudalism redux took over. Democracy works when allowed to.
The whole education system starting with middle school and high school needs to be revitalized and changed all together to meet the needs of a modern world. On some levels the education system is based on economies and jobs of the past. Not for the future.
Of course they are not prepared. Former Middle School high School English teacher here. But I'll give you some math that I'm sure you're aware of already. Take half of a teacher's time away working with students to attend meetings about the state test, take away class time actually teaching to train them on how to take this test, when is there any time left to teach them how to write? And yet Bill is here arguing that we need to keep the standardized tests. You can't say you support teachers out one side of your mouth and then advocate for standardized tests out the other. If you're not an educator better to keep that mouth closed altogether IMO

I disagree. The older generations were much more sensitive. There’s a far-left and far-right annoyance that gets offended at everything today, but if you lived before the internet then you’d know people were extremely sensitive and judgmental. Rock n roll was “Satan’s music” and most of us weren’t allowed to watch “vulgar” movies. Nowadays are more careless than ever.
I think since we can say fuck and shit rather freely now, I do it about 10 times a day at work, Gen Z is looking to create new unspeakable words. It's an interesting act of rebellion.
Most times, those words are self-censored to appease the almighty algorithms. So the Internet personalities on various platforms don't use them, and their audiences subconsciously avoid them, and the brainrot spreads.
@@AtheismScientism Yeah, it's weird for people to think Gen Z is somehow in general more sensitive. And since when does "Gen Z" hold the levers of power to have things broadcast or not? Your theory is all well and good, Bill, but the problem is that, unlike Clinton and Obama, Kamala has no single, distinctive moment or episode upon which she can focus such efforts. Clinton had Sister Soulja. Obama had Reverend Wright. But all Kamala can focus upon in this vein is general principles or ideas, which simply don't resonate in today's TikTok world.
Her moment could have been giving a speech giving credit to Joe Biden but then pointing out what she could do better and the mistakes that she learned from. Making her appear humble but with a stronger understanding of the issues could be that moment. But she won't criticize Joe Biden at all.
@@oeckstei But don't you think that would sound like she was going out of her way to find fault with Biden? Clinton and Obama both had the luxury of having a particular incident to which they could respond. Kamala, not so much...

@@oeckstei I totally agree with that sentiment, but Biden is still her boss. Imagine giving a televised speech to millions of people and the main theme is criticizing your boss and then explaining how you could do their job better....then still having to show up for work for the next 150 days. My suggestion wouldn't qualify as a Sister Soulja moment, but a softer version that she probably should do is speak directly to the American people and say "Joe Biden and I have accomplished X, Y, Z but the job isn't done. So, in my first year in office I plan to do A, B, C."

Too late for Kamala and she is no Clinton or Obama, who had the political instincts to do the right thing at the right time. Kamala needs other people to tell her what to do. If it is so important to prevent Trump, how could they come up with such a weak candidate. That's an insult to voters.
Trump n Harris both insult voters, better people are abundent, our polit system is faulty , more than tax, welfare ,unemployment, cps ,educ, all govt sys
Kamala needs just one unscripted interview. Or one where she answers a simple question. Or one where she doesn't laugh inappropriately. Or one where she doesn't appear bereft of ideas and how to articulate them. Or bash Trump without any relevance to the question at hand. Is that too much to ask?
Bill sure did struggle with this one. Even the audience had to be queued up. Humor and condescension combined is an art form. And like anything aging generationally, Bill is becoming what he once successfully criticized.
I love anti woke Bill Maher. As if everyone doesn’t remember the Obama years when anytime someone would criticize Obama, Bill would be like “gee I wonder why…” big eye roll. He totally paved the way for all this

In summary: Kamala needs to bring out that same energy she brought with "the greatest privilege on earth is to be an American". We love that. We need that. The president should first foremost be America's biggest cheerleader.
And it was all a lie. She's just pandering to undecided voters. As soon as she takes office, it would be back to the same ol BS of hating America and blaming white people for everything. If the left actually wanted to fix the democrat party, they'd vote for Trump. It would send a pretty clear message to the democrats if Trump won in a landslide. If Harris wins somehow, it's pretty much a vote for status quo. When even your own party doesn't hold you accountable for the nonsense, why change?
Agreed. They should also stand behind America's most treasured tenets: liberty, freedom of speech/expression, the bearing of arms, the freedom from unreasonable searches...unfortunately under her administration over the past four years, we have seen exactly the opposite. Think COVID restrictions and mandatory C19 vaccines that turned out to be therapeutics...none of us in the middle and to our right will forget that time when we step into that booth.

The problem with standardized testing is that teachers "teach to the test," making sure the students can parrot back the expected answer and not apply any critical thinking.
As a former teacher, I can tell you that I have no answer to the problem. Most teachers try a myriad of ways to increase critical thinking skills but fall short for many reasons. But standardized testing is a problem because of issues at the local, state, and federal level that teachers have no control over. At the end of the day, teachers like to eat, pay their rent, and well, you get the picture, and like other jobs we have to do what our bosses tell us to do whether we agree with it or not.

Surprisingly good this time. Telling people not to commit crime and learn more in school, is a good thing no matter where you come from. Next time we might even hear how poverty can result in unwanted behavior and that education is a good way to get out of poverty.

As a college professor, I see most incoming college students are totally unprepared to survive college - and even less prepared for life. College are not doing much better at preparing students - and they are charging more and more for less and less useful 'education.'
In the pre-Reagan years, Unions were the path to the Middle Class and America had a strong middle class that strengthened our economy.
And yet Bill is here arguing that we need to keep the standardized tests.
You can't say you support teachers out one side of your mouth and then advocate for standardized tests out the other. If you're not an educator better to keep that mouth closed altogether IMO
Unions are just as corrupt as the government and giant corporations. They may have played their part decades ago, but now they're just another 'cog in the machine' so to speak.

@@oeckstei She did say that her presidency would not be a continuation of Joe Biden’s presidency. That says a lot!
Disagree, if Kamala Harris clearly stated (is that possible for her?) that she disagrees with trans women competing in women's sports or irreversible medical procedures on minors with gender dysphobia that would be a slam dunk for the "politically homeless" progressives who aren't on-board with the Dems on these issues but otherwise would be all-in for Harris.
Yeah, that was his Reverend for 28 years lol.
