As a teacher of AP US History for over 20 years, I fight the battle against presentism on an almost daily basis. On most days I come home so drained and depressed that I question whether it’s a battle worth fighting.

Yeah except there are still crappy people and good people throughout history.
The biggest slave owning states fought to keep slavery.
Those were classical crappy people.
I teach in the public schools. Maher is right on point here. Glad Maher isn't backing down. Don't apologize for what you said, Mr. Maher. Hold your ground. You're speaking truth and people need to learn to deal with it.
Maher is wrong. He's ignoring the victims entirely. They knew it was wrong and there were more of them. If you don't want it done to you you shouldn't be doing it to others. That's uncomplicated and uncontroversial. People with money and weapons simple profited from exploitation and cruelty. This hasn't changed. Democracy has just given voice to the oppressed.
Good thing that Ministry of truth thing hasn't materialized yet, otherwise Bills voice would be canceled by the cancel culture and labeled as hate speech.
Glad to hear a teacher is willing to listen to open-minded points of view,,, as you should hold as a standard in your class room😉 keep it real and fight the good fights🙏

The people they were abusing knew it was wrong... but they aren't even taken into consideration. What a whitewash.
I'm pretty far on the left, but Bill says perfectly what I've been trying to formulate for a while now. Not prosecuting people for who they love is not the same as blindly denying both history and biology.

I suspect this contributes to the arrogance we see in todays student attitudes, they are told they're better than everyone who ever preceded them, just as Bill said.

Maher is wrong in his interpretaton of "presentism".
He is trying to wipe the lines between morals and mores.
Moral values and the Golden Rule have been known for more that 2000 years.
If you do to others what what won't find acceptable oneself if in the own shoes, then that is not "presentism".
Does evey single crime of the past have to have consequences today? No.
Do we have to acknowledge that terrible crimes were committed in the past, for own gain? Yes.
Thank you!! I’m a nobody. Just a lowly useless white male with 12th grade and trade school education. I have been saying this for as long as I can remember. The most ignorant thing a person can do is judge people from the past on todays standards. It never ceases to amaze me people do this. It’s a form of self righteousness that can’t be imagined by anyone with common sense. Of course you are going to cringe when you hear about the things people did, you live in the moment. But to persecute them, that’s a level of arrogance I can’t fathom. Unfortunately the people that do this have been given too much credibility and are warping the minds of the youth. It feels like irreparable damage.
the only ones who don't wanna judge the people of the past by todays standards are the ones who have a vested interest NOW to not be associated with the evils of the past. A (large) minority of whites doesn't wanna say outright "slavery was an evil thing" because they feel connected to the slavers and sometimes admire them, as well for their ungodly slaughter of 30 million Native Americans. Which was a genocide. more than a 100 different cultures and tribes have been eradicated by white Americans. To say: "Oh thats not a bad thing, you have to judge them by their own standard", THATS the real arrogance.
Slavery and genocide was and is always an evil thing. ESPECIALLY in the form white Americans did it. And spare me all the "indentured labor" analogies. That's just an evil group's justification for their evil actions.
You are not a nobody, mate, you are a person and you have value to many people.
Why bother posting if you are a nobody? Obviously no one is going to take it seriously.
It's just manipulation...Trying to make you feel guilty so that they can have their way.
Dont EVER start a statement with "I'm a nobody". You are as valuable as anyone. You make a difference in this world. Your voice is as important as anyone's. Do not apologize or belittle yourself.
Other than having to say that to you... I enjoyed your comment. Have a great day!!

The past? As perpetually validated by EEO-1s, EEO-4s, and countless independent research studies, except for more strategically placed "window dressing" of more token women and minorities in sports and entertainment, absolutely NOTHING has changed. Bill Maher is WRONG. He missed the point; the USA was founded on the statement, "We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal," but at absolutely no point has this "principle" been practiced in the USA. In 1776, elite, well-educated, slave-owning, God-fearing White men began and have always made "the rules" and unilaterally continue to make exceptions to the "rules." If these smart, elite, slave-owning White men truly believed it was "self-evident" that all people, including women, are created equal, they would have said so, but they did not. They knew the meaning and value of words, and they elected to omit a specific timetable to officially establish a so-called "egalitarian" democratic republic from both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. The
aforementioned is the "truth," and has absolutely nothing to do with playing the race card or the sex card. tripoetry.com/Letters/reynoldsrap-systemic.htm

There is a difference between judging history and understanding it. In order to truly understand, you have to put aside the standards of the world that you live in and instead put yourself in the shoes of people who lived in the past. As hard as it may be, you have to attempt to understand the standards of the past. But instead, many people today are much more focused on simply judging history through the lens of presentism in order to push a narrative. This also leads to an oversimplification of history.
History is a complicated expance with fallen people, some who try and do good, in an evil world.
Soon they'll be blaming the cave men from 57,000 BC for our current year 2022 problems.. Watch.....
Africans did not sell their slaves. As Mr. Maher points out His-story is written by the victors. In the case of the trans Atlantic slave trade, and un-fought war. History?? Not! Current? Yes. US law clearly states that slaves and their offspring are not human. but mere animals.
Great comment.
Jefferson advocated for abolition, thinking it was morally repugnant and also would lead to bad economic results, He knew it was bad, like we all do. Yet he kept his slaves and annecodatly spoke of how they were better with him than the Deep South. We can talk about how thats gross and how that compromises him as a human while also talking about how is Americas best president and without his influence we wouldn't be the amazing nation we are today. We have to understand though the systemic pressures he lived within, society and systems had it that we had slaves during his time, he had a small part of that system but while being was not as powerful as the system. He advocated for it and failed one of the best politianas ever didn't do it, the system pushed on he and he accepted. We should see these people and question there morality or speak of there compromises the same we should think about ourselves in relation to sweatshops, homelessness, and environmental destruction. We have a hand on the wheel and should be judged, but its all our hands and the systemic powers that guide the ship.

I hear what you’re saying, but I don’t think it’s “presentism” to be critical of slave owners at the time, especially when abolitionism was also so prevalent. Certainly these people were of their time, but they also had agency, and they made conscious decisions to enslave, torture, and brutalize in order to make a profit.
@@DABIGDAWG001 - Whether or not the owning of slaves was "understandable" in that era, the real issue with regard of the history/mythology of the United States was that it was supposed to be a nation "conceived in liberty" yet retained slavery for political and economic reasons nonetheless. It is terrifying that we even need to have this conversation about history and the fact that Bill's stand on this is brave rather than simple common sense.
You can say that "that is how it was then" and "that was wrong in the end" without contradicting. The problem I see every so often is WHO is complaining. And the "who" is usually the Elders. Who want "how things were" taken into account. Because if they are not "Back in my day" cant apply to "now".
The elites. Not the every day people

@@Iansco1 Yes. Problems arise when context isn't taken into consideration. Columbus may have enslaved the Caribs, but it's also worth noting that the Caribs were believed to be warlike cannibals. And human sacrifice was a widespread practice among the Central and South American natives encountered by other explorers. It was an ugly and messy time. But 'presentists' allow their bias to blind them to key historical facts that don't reinforce the 'rightness' of their bias. That's how you end up with dishonest narratives like, "The natives were innocent people living an idyllic life and the evil white men came and destroyed that perfectly harmonious existence forever."
It's virtually impossible to study history without rooting for or against certain players. Having biases when studying history isn't a problem as long as you are aware of it, maintain perspective and don't try to excuse bad acts because they were committed by 'your team'. There is no argument from me against that. The issue arises when you try to compare the kinds of slavery. I am a native. And slaves were and still are most common in the world. But not the sick form of slavery that the American Colonizers brought about. Small pox blankets. Slaves even in the scriptures were treated humanly and as human beings. with the option to be set free after a time. Not selling tickets for family gatherings and cookouts with their children to watch brutality, beatings, burnings and dismemberment. And fighting over body parts to take home and display on the mantel . Using black pre-toddlers binding them. And using their cries as alligator bait. (That is where the term comes from). Even to this day by the laws established in this land (NOT THE PAST) descendants of slaves are legally "by law " not considered %100 human. This is the current law. Which makes it STILL legal. No you (if you are a descendant of colonizers-forefathers, as I am under the laws against me given to my forefathers) do not get a pass to make yourselves seem as though you did nothing different. When the law is current. Mr. Maher bends the facts as your forefathers did in their own inimitable ways. Ther are nuances to this. And while you may think you have facts, our greats & grandparents tell us all. And we know truth. My great grands were chattel. And I knew them before they passed. And I tell my children all.
Africans did not sell their slaves. As Mr. Maher points out His-story is written by the victors. In the case of the trans Atlantic slave trade, and un-fought war. History?? Not! Current? Yes. US law clearly states that slaves and their offspring are not human. but mere animals.

@Nuno Graca We're better at some things and not as good at others. We're probably doing better at combating racism now than any time in the last 500 years. I'm not saying that we don't have a long way to go, but things are measurably better. I think our worst trait in any age is self-righteousness. We're quick to point out police officers who racially profile, or someone who doesn't respect another person's pronouns, but we translate that into "I'm not prejudice because I'm not as bad as that person," and we ignore what we need to improve about ourselves. We ignore the fact that because someone doesn't share our political beliefs we often stereotype that person as having other beliefs also, or we assume that the person is less intelligent or less well educated than we are. I think social media contributes to this, as people reject friends who disagree with their politics and embrace those who share their own views and create bubbles of people that keep reaffirming their ideas.
Constitution. aforementioned is the "truth," and has absolutely nothing to do with playing the race card or the sex card. tripoetry.com/Letters/reynoldsrap-systemic.htm

Except that the form of slavery performed in America, chattel slavery, was *not* normal. It was *magnitudes* worse than even the kinds of slavery performed by other imperialist colonial powers, because those other countries (like Spain and Britain) eventually let people out of slavery. They had *some* way to get out. It wasn't *inherently and purposefully* tied to race. That's literally why American slavers wrote their laws the way they did, to include "black" as a concept tied to slavery rather than "christian" or "muslim" like those other slaving nations did.

As someone who has trouble making peace with his past, I needed to hear that. Thank you Bill Maher, we don’t always agree but damn it at least you’re authentic.
Yo, I recall wearing orange pants and a red sweatshirt to grade school once... Being ignorant and misinformed is the norm, that we grow out of. No one emerges as a perfect being.
@@JD.......... very true, the thing I grew up around people that learned how to be cool a lot faster than I did. I would always just be the guy in the background.
I actually don't. I never gave a shit what people have ever thought of what I said... ever. I just don't care. I always recognized since I was little that all people are just animals. We live, we breathe. We die. The end. No one is more special than another, so who gives a shit what the next guy thinks.
@@rickrolled2765 Of course some people are "more special" than others. Think of Charlie Chaplin, Michael Faraday, Isaac Newton, Edward Hopper, Mohandas Gandhi, Nikola Tesla, Gabriel García Márquez, J.R.R. Tolkien, Al Pacino, Ernesto Guevara, Aileen Wuornos, Chiang Kai-shek, Édith Piaf, Guy de Maupassant, Ted Bundy, Ishikawa Goemon, Isadora Duncan, Tazio Nuvolari, Elon Musk, Louis Kahn, Jeremy Clarkson, Utagawa Hiroshige, Gary Ridgway...

This is one of the best New Rules segments yet! Thank you, Bill. And I must say, I agree with every point that you made!
NOT a NEW rule.... an old rule America founded on... and after woodstock seemed to have lost and perverted..... (NOT to denegrate woodstock----- BUT I wonder and wish woodstock was clean and sober so I could be comfortable and at home attending---- but seems that implies it was ONLY christian to have done so)...... and so objective exploration and moderation are thrown out like a baby in the bathwater. shrug.
Me too and not a big fan of Bills
then you're a person of the Right . Good on ya .
@@jimmymags6516 nope person of the middle... center I kick both sides in the shins and will be forgotten when I die.
@@jimmymags6516 And you're a person on the Left, and so that sucks for you.
My favorite history teacher always said we must judge those by the standards of the time they lived in, not by the current standards of the time we live in.
How about we just not judge them in the first place? Learn from history to better understand the present.
There were always people against the status quo who saw what was good from what was bad. We fought a whole war over it.

I almost died practicing presentism a couple of weeks ago. Each year my former University sponsors a hike to the highest peak east of town. Not a problem. I already did it twice before. Problem occurred, the last time I did it I was 20. Now I'm 81. I failed to cognitate that 81 year old bodies don't hike as well as 20 year olds.
