Just to point out.
I got really excited when my USB hub arrived to get this working with my iPhone 14. When I plugged everything in my external HD was not showing up on my phone :(
I was super bummed out.
I left everything plugged in for over 10 minutes and now it appeared! Awesome.
I'm not sure, but the USB hub may need time to charge up or something.
I wanted to share my experience because although it works, it did not happen instantly for me as it shows in the video. So, you may just need to give it a little time.

Thanks for Vid. I finally figured it out. Anyway using my Iphone 15 Pro Max i was able to transfer my pics & Videos directly to an external SSD without using any other power supply.
Great job! Apple still makes it more difficult than it needs to be forcing you down the iCloud path. How are they doing that you may ask? No select all or option to move all of them at once. I have 8,000 and my wife has 22,000 photos :). So far the best solution is to use Amazon photos since we are prime members and it’s free. It is a backup, not a sync like iCloud, so you can delete off your phone and keep them in Amazon photos. I’ve heard I could pay for iCloud, get them uploaded, then from iCloud website on my Mac, export to external SSD. Still working through this but making some progress.
They really make it tricky. So annoying that you can’t “select all”. Let me know if you find an amazing solution!

I’m doing exactly this.
I tried iPhone to OC to external HDD but kept failing.
Tried PhotoMechanic on PC, but PM6 does not recognize the iPhone as a drive.
Tried Mac finder, but it will only accept a sync of the iPhone. I don’t want to sync with my MBP (work laptop).
Then I tried Mac w viewer to hard drive but it kept failing.
So I am on day two of syncing iPhone to iCloud. It seeps stopping the sync. Such a PITA.
If it stops again I’ll go buy the camera adapter and cancel iCloud.

Why does Apple seem to think the “time” or “time remaining” of file transfers is this super secret ingredient of the universe? FFS tell us how long it will take. It’s a freaking math problem not a portal to another universe.
@@Pterodactyl-kn3vegood luck! The method I mentioned worked but it took me several days. You might have faster luck with a windows machine. My Mac would sleep after a few hours (another known quirk haha). So, in summary, I paid for a higher tier Amazon photos, uploaded everything, then I bought a new external drive for photos only, and downloaded them from Amazon photos to the drive, then I canceled the subscription. 40,000 plus photos, and over 10 g of video, all in one place now. Still a PIA. Cheers
I did exactly and the “SAVE” option is not available.
This might be a formatting issue. However, BEFORE your reformat your drive make sure that you save all of the files on the drive to another location because reformatting will remove all of your files.

Bought the two adapters you suggest. Transferred videos from IPhone 14 to external hard drive, but when I play them from the hard drive only the audio plays-no video. Any suggestions?
Do you need to power off your iPhone before you disconnect your ssd or just close the apps?
I always close the apps and then power down the phone before I unplug the SSD
I wish I had seen this video before I went to a Micro Center store today. I bought a Seagate ONE Touch portable storage device a year ago and was told that it is not compatable with iPhone ( I have IPhone 12) if I want to transfer photos directly to the device.
One of the Micro Center store assitants recommended that I purchase a Lacie portable SSD and I did. However, it doesn't work for my iPhone 12 either and I contacted the company's helpline. I was told that Lacie portable SSD only works for Mac computers and iPad not for iPhones.
I'm going to buy a Lighting to USB Adapter and a USB Hub tomorrow and see if I can transfer photos/videos directly to the ONE Touch portable device.

This might be a good solution for me because I have been having so much trouble with copying my photos and videos from my iPhone to my external hard drive using iCloud! I am going on vacation in a couple of weeks to Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida and I will take tons of photos and videos with my iPhone 14 Pro Max and need a quick and easy way to copy them to my hard drive without needing to pack a laptop, especially when flying and having to pull the laptop out when passing through TSA at the airport.

This doesn't work for me ...yet : ) , my hub lights up, so has power, my hard drive lights up and I can feel it spins up, so has power but it just doesn't show up on my iPhone in files folder. Any ideas? iPhone 13 Pro, IOS 16.4.1. Does it need to be that exact hub? Question on 'hub', I have a UGreen usb-c 'hub' with USB C and USB 3.0 ports, are all ports on these types of devices connected, as in, it's a true hub or are some of these just powering usb ports and the data/power can't flow between ports? Thanks.
It also works with a power pack. I use it for my IPhone 12 Pro Max.
Would I be able to use files from a hard drive In iMovie using the adapters? I have a hard drive with a bunch of files and soundbites, but it’s a pain using my laptop and importing the video on my iPhone onto the computer.

Hi, I made all the connections as you said, buying the same products from amazon. The only difference is the external hard drive that in my case is powered by USB-C cable. The iphone does not show the HD in the "files" option. Any advice for this situation?
I wonder if it is a formatting issue? I am not sure, but sometimes you need format your drive. HOWEVER, if you are going to reformat your HD make sure you save everything on the drive somewhere else because reformatting with cause you to lose those files.
I also follow the links, bought all the things, but the iphone does not show the HD in the "files" option, do you have any luck of figuring this out?

It only moves a copy. You will still have the file on your phone.
Do you have a way to get selected photos from an iphone (13 in my case) onto a PC using a similar method instead of the Import Photos function in Windows? Something like the method you show here, but saving to a folder on my PC instead of a hard drive? For some reason I thought I could connect my phone to my laptop and export, but the phone does not recognize my PC's hard drive as a Location. The Import Photos function on the PC is just a pain when I only want to move 10-15 of my 2500 photos.

When I try to save the file to the drive the Save option is grayed out. Any reason why? I think I know why, the drive is set to Read Only. I can fix that quick.

Thank you for your video, I purchased through your links. Is there a way to "select all" in photos / video at one time in an album to transfer. I want to transfer and wipe all the photo media and videos from my photo but it's rather a PITA to have to select each photo or video one at a time.
This question has come up over and over, there is a way to select faster. however. there is not currently a "Select all" button which seems like a MASSIVE oversight by Apple.

Great question, it does! Give the time of creating, resolution, size all of that. Is there specific metadata you are looking for? I can make sure it keeps that specific info you are looking for.

Did you figure this out? Sometime this is a formatting issue. But before your reformat your SSD or hard drive MAKE SURE YOU Move all of your file/photos/videos to another drive or shove them elsewhere. Reformatting your drive will delete all of your files.
Doing that and then trying the same process will sometime resolve the problem.

Hi, I have a 13 Pro and am using a WD My Passport external hard drive. Everything works up to the point of clicking the "save" in the upper right corner -- it's not clickable. Do you have any idea why I can't actually move the images over to the external hard drive? Thank you.

@@spillthegoods He discovered that iPhone13 cannot save to an NTFS drive, because it shows up as read only on the iPhone. He reformatted the drive to exFAT, and it worked like a charm. (We had to empty the hard drive first before reformatting.)

Does using a usbc to lightning cable not work?
It does work IF you have an iPhone 15 or later. If not, you will need to have these adapters to give the SSD or Hard drive enough power to show up on your files.
welp I should have seen this videos before returning my external hard drive because no matter what I did I couldn't transfer any photos :(
