  • what up!! oh what up. So today guys I'm going to show you how to make this enamel pin. pin. pin...
    So the game plan is to make little molds of plastic to cast the metal in. I made two, The base plate that the metal is going to sit in and then one that you're going to stamp in the metal
    so to make these what I did was I took some clear acrylic plastic and I printed out the images that I wanted and and taped them to the back of [the plastic]
    That way, I could see it and i could scratch into it. so you scratch it out first. (or draw it out) these scratches are going to make the lines that stick out on your enamel pin.
    what you do next is you want to get those [lines] nice and deep. I took a Dremel and i drilled out the lines.
    You don't have to use a Dremel, just so long as you get them nice and deep.
    If you follow me on Snapchat you'll know that I cheated and I went and got these laser engraved, just because it was going to be quicker and easier.
    It still wasn't deep enough so I took it and I dremeled it again.
    Go ahead and clean it out a little bit. I put a piece of tape on the back [of the stamp one] just so i could hold it [better].
    The metal i used was just solder. (Come to find out even lead free solder has bad fumes.. so use super good ventilation and mask or try a different metal) what you use on any electrical repair and a little tiny blow torch. heat it till its liquid. and your going to pour it on the little base. and push it in with the stamp and pull it off.
    so I mean that didn't work so I tried it again. lets try that one more time. Nope lets try again. liquid it up. and push it in.
    Guys this took so many tries
    But eventually I got one I was okay with. Then go ahead and cut off the excess. It looks good so lets run with that one. cut it off more. get it to where you want it. file it to get the nice little details on the edges.
    next were going to glue on the pin. I took the epoxy and mixed it. put it on the back of the [metal pin] it takes about 4 to 8 hours to set.
    but once its set you can go ahead and paint it. I started with a black paint but you could just leave it silver.
    now time for the enamel. you can get this at any craft store - its what people use to paint their model cars and what not. I mixed up the colors to what i wanted and with a paint brush i just painted it.
    with the small parts I used a tooth pick. tiny little detail in the eye right their. looks good
    I like to mix the colors on the same little pallet so they marry each other and have the same feel.
    again with the small little detail in the eye and... done. let that dry.
    all you have to do it put the backing of the pin on there and there you have it. DOOOPE.
    (UPDATE: that JB weld didn't hold too well.. so I recommend using super glue...)
    As far as a home made (hand made) pin I was pretty pumped on it. A little enamel pin. I hadn't seen one done.
    So guys I'm going to be giving away this one, or a different one that i made, on my Instagram. Go ahead and check out [my Instagram] . Just like the post with this pin on it... and... ya ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    (I kind of just must made this up... so there might be a better way to do it from home... but this worked well enough for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

    You should be careful with solder. Work in a well ventilated area and be aware that it has lead in it.

      Happy to help! There are lead free solders out there, but no matter what, ventilation is important especially with that quantity. :) Super cool project though!

      To avoid the use of solder you could try melting down pure copper, sterling or fine silver wire. You should still have proper ventilation but it's not nearly as toxic ad solder.

    • @blueorangeblossom
      @blueorangeblossom 7 лет назад +53

      Yes also, the spoon may have aluminum or a coating of some kind that would be toxic if burned off...enamel paints are also pretty toxic. The paints wouldn't be so bad, but the best thing to do would be to cast it in a crucible or even a homemade set up like sand. You can easily melt sterling silver jewelry or flatware for small projects, but you have to clean it with a hot solution called a "pickle" to clean off the dross...you can easily use copper with silver bc they work well together copper is the same, you can find it and melt it from other objects-it just turns green on the skin

      Yeah - because that's what works. Enamel pins need to be made with industrial equipment and super high temp materials. But go ahead - try making it like this and see how it turns out. Oh and don't forget all the safety equipment you need that he forgot to mention so that you don't get cancer :)

    • @bubbahotep380

      Yeah duh! Whats wrong with you people? Its way better to give your designs to a Chinese manufacturer so they can pump out a couple hundred pins for you, keep the mold, and pump out a hundred thousand for themselves. Whilst all the while hyper polluting the environment by using substandard materials and equipment, undercutting the market, and destroying our economy. Or even better, you can give your design to a pin producer (AKA Fukkin pin vulture) pay at least double to get your design made by the same manufacturer. Only to have both the producer and the manufacturer steal your design. Thats whats up.

      please dont try this at home. lead solder can cause lead poisoning and cancer, and lead-free solder will have you inhaling chemicals and metals. other comments have left more information about this but please please do your research!

  • @notfst
    @notfst 6 лет назад +43

    Not to be a downer but even cured solder is insanely weak. I wouldn't be surprised if that broke within the first month. With that torch you might get to aluminum levels and cast a actual metal pin.

  • @Bloodyro6ot
    @Bloodyro6ot 7 лет назад +97

    just dont use any solder which contains led for this. wouldnt be very healthy. also if it contains flux dont breathe in the fumes it creates while it melts. again not very healthy.
    doesnt the solder bend quite easily? i feel like that could happen and cause the paint to chip off.

    • @audreyh6628

      Green Dragon lead free solder is bad?

    • @smackmybones1371
      @smackmybones1371 6 лет назад +65

      Shmoxd lead free solder fumes are worse for you than regular solder. They require a more intense type of ventilation. I worked with solder in the military for a while so I had to be trained in safety precautions of soldering pretty often.
      Edit: I should clarify that it's because lead free solder has a higher melting point, and will become airborne along with chemicals and whatever else is stuck to it and is highly cancerous.

    • @Shmoxd
      @Shmoxd  6 лет назад +30

      Shiiiiiiit.... do you know of another metal with a low melting point that would work?

    • @smackmybones1371
      @smackmybones1371 6 лет назад +39

      Shmoxd there are certain metal which might be useful that you could experiment with. Bismuth has a really low melting point, so alloys such as Fields Metal which is like Bismuth-Zinc-Tin would be useful. Tin-silver alloys are food safe so they should be okay. Pewter is.. toxic to breathe but with proper ventilation as always, you could be fine, but it's less safe than the previously mentioned metals.

You might also want to experiment with metalclays like silver clay , you still get to use your blow torch and a lot less problems that the solder! :) do post if / when you try it though as I would like to see!

    Thanks for the idea. I was thinking, make a mold from that and use metallic clay. It's not inexpensive for clay, but you could make quite a few. I'd have to go through my saved RUclips videos to see what to make the mold out of.

    Nice! This turned out pretty great although I think enamel pins are one of those fads that just can't really be diy'ed. You're better off sending it to a company that will produce your design for you.

    • @boixgenius
      @boixgenius 7 лет назад +41

      JustRosieStorm nah this is awesome. if you're creative enough you can totally make one that looks professional.

    • @anitar.6245
      @anitar.6245 7 лет назад +39

      Beemanq I think what Rosie meant is that it isn't something that can become a common diy-thing because you need quite some things that a regular person doesn't own or can work with easily :/ Also, most diy's work with materials you can easily buy or use an alternative to, while with this it isn't the case.

    • @MsVixenChan
      @MsVixenChan 7 лет назад +7

      707 boi these materials aren't too hard to get, there not some crazy thing that you can only find on the Internet the only thing that may be a bit hard is the drill thing and the torch (even then those are easy to get your hands on like a cooking torch). But if you plan on making A BUNCH of puns this would be great. For your friends, to sell them you know something like that it's not that hard really.

    • @paper.dragonflies5975
      @paper.dragonflies5975 6 лет назад

      Honestly I feel like finding a good supplier would be harder (and more expensive) than getting the materials. It might be a pain to learn but it could save you a lot of money in the long run, considering how much enamel pins cost and you don't know whether your supplier is gonna be good or not because its one of those trade secrets that nobody shares.

      Between WalMart and Home Depot, you can get everything you need to make this. Or, there's a little website called Amazon, which will even deliver it to you ;)

  • @embeth6913

    Dude this is an amazing way to DIY those pins! But just a heads up to everyone that solder does have lead in it so be careful when heating it and don't put the pin in your mouth or anything.

  • @cecilisneat7220

    Do you think that laser cutting (engraving in this case) would do the trick for creating the press? Or would it help to dremel it after?

    • @Shmoxd
      @Shmoxd  6 лет назад

      Soooo I liked the engraving cause they were real straight lines.. I did have to go over it multiple times to get it deep enough though..

    • @Noneofconsequence
      @Noneofconsequence 6 лет назад

      thanks for the reply! that's what I suspected, it might be more conventient though cause you can make like five presses at once.
