I tried different types of plastic in my electric oven. It doesn't smell at all even if you accidentally use the wrong type of plastic and it shrinks even if it's not the appropriate type (but it just doesn't shrink enough to become harder). So you won't get a lava pool in your oven anyway :з
ItzMeMilica it’s always fun when you don’t have to go out and get supplies I had an old pair of sunglasses lying around and some gems and old earrings and I made fake designer sunglasses and not gonna lie I wear them again now cause they look really cool

This type of plastic releases toxic carcinogens when heated, just an FYI to anyone looking to make these. It also takes 100s of years to degrade so I think some companies are trying to phase it out of use. I'd recommend buying a pack of Shrinky Dinks sheets, which undergoes the same effect when heated as the takeout containers but is specifically engineered to contain far less toxins so it is basically safe. The sheets can be bought for a few dollars at most craft stores.
I just got Shrinkydinks plastic paper today at Michael's, made little pins with Sharpie and my little brother loved it. I grew up with Shrinkydinks and I miss them so much!
I love jenn and her DIYS because it's not just like half a** DIYS it's actual DIYS like for instance her last video she could have just said print pictures on sticker paper and there's your DIY sticker but no she actually made them and that's just really cool to me
I bought cookies from the bakery section at Wal-Mart and after I got home I realized it had the number six triangle on the bottom! I was so happy because I couldn't find any plastic before and the cookies were fairly cheap so it's like 2 in one: a nice treat and cute pins!
As someone who has had a pin collection since '96 and been looking into making my own, this sounds like a FANTASTIC time!! Thank you thank you thank you!
HEY! you can also sand the plastic before you put it in the oven, that way you can use regular color pencils and the color will remain the same 😊 TRUST ME IT WORKS!
I'm from the balkan and I managed to find it in a craft store we have here, its just clear plastic food containers as Jen said. Mine were about 30c a piece, so thats really cheap. Also, if you cant find any with a big flat part, the ribbed parts on mine flattened out when i put them in the oven so you can almost use the entire container! Hope this helped!
Are you kidding your videos are amazing and you have a calm voice. I can’t believe what you can make with plastic. That’s me sorted for the weekend with this and the kids. Thanks
For anyone that doesn't know, if you sand the plastic before you bake it you can color on them with pencils or use a printer and they will be a lot darker when they come out of the oven, also you can buy sheets of shrink plastic online.
Using the enamel paint used to paint models works great on the sharing plastic. Looks great. If you also seal them with the hard UV resin used on nails, it protects the front and back. Of course you need a UV light to harden the resin. I color my resin with gouache paint and then do the final coat in clear resin. Your pins on shrink plastic looks great. Thanks for sharing.
You can lightly sand the plastic before you do any tracing, and after you use the sharpie for the outline you can color it in with colored pencil. Once it shrinks, the pigment from the pencil is a lot more concentrated and isn't see through at all! I've done this several times, it works great and gives a lot more coloring options :)
Adeya Harris-Smith Ive tried but every time I've glued the pin on it it breaks off the nailpolish with paint and I have a chunk of paint off my pin 😢 I need another way to make the back white and keep it waterproof!
If anyone sees this, I hope this helps. If you can't find plastic with the six, I know one place to find it. If you've ever heard of Chips Ahoy cookies, you know there's a plastic thing holding the cookies. That should be the right plastic. Make sure to check just in case and be smart!
Keep cooking them and they will flatten on their own. If they're still curled after another five mins you can put them back in the oven to heat up for a couple mins and then remove to promptly cover them with something heavy (soup pot works great!)

Erica Garin it's because #6 is not recyclable at all (almost) in all US states. So upcycle your #6 plastic. The fumes and inhalation of our art supplies is just as toxic, so no matter what plastic you use you're going to have an effect later in life possibly 😂👍
MrsG87 I agree with the upcycling, but that’s not exactly great advice you gave at the end there haha. True, we’re all gonna die, but it’s not too difficult to open some windows and let the oven air out afterwards to get rid of the fumes and maybe not give us cancer lmao
Tyler Burney that's what I was saying, too. Having worked with multiple mediums, and having amazing art professors in college that don't sugar coat anything, if you're going to inhale anything it's more likely you're going to inhale your marker fumes, chalks, pastels, etc than you would the plastic fumes from this (unless you're going to stick your head in the oven, which please don't do LOL)

I had to stick all of them together with some strong glue which is always hard, and I had to go through extra steps to stick the pin backings to the thing... I had only one marker that was good on the plastic -Which was dark blue- . All the other markers were easily erased... But even the one marker I had could be erased if you pushed on the plastic too hard, so I had to redraw the pattern during the cardboard process as well. I made the pin, the whole thing took around 5 hours. I'm very tired. But I'm glad and relieved that I was able to finish it. *I really enjoyed your video! I'm not kidding, it was really fun and inspiring.* And I wouldn't have to go through all of these and spend so much energy and time if I had the good marker, if I could find the right plastic and all. Thanks for taking the time to make this tutorial and explaining everything :> I don't think all the time I spent on the pin was worth it, but if I can make one easily the way you explained, I can give it a try later. When I have enough time -and nerves- to search more places for the plastic and buy good markers Goodluck ^v^
To people having difficulty finding the #6 plastics, the number 6 stands for polystyrene and is a single use plastic so common containers would be those clam packaging used for bread and pastries that are clear and thin or the foam-type typically used for pasta and take home food. #5 is polypropylene which is the clear and thin microwave-safe kind. So the only easy way to get those #6 ones is by buying bread coz all other types available in the grocers are the #5 or the polystyrene foam type ones.
So what actually happened to the #1 plastic? I hear it will do the same thing but that it doesn't shrink as much. I'm all into recycling and #SaveTheMermaids so any plastic I can use will be beneficial.
Not trying to sound rude or pretentious at all, but you should look up how a microwave works. Then you will know why a microwave won't work and why an oven does. :) it's all about a transfer of heat to shrink the plastic; microwaves do not use heat like an oven, they use frequencies and waves.
Awesome, cool ways to make Christmas tree ornaments too. Just also use a hole punch. I have used coloring books because I am not an cool artist like you are. Thank you for your beautiful creativity ideas, you be a special talent gift for this crazy world!!!
We don't have kankens , artsy socks , sharpies , special vans' collections (only classic and period in dfrnt colors) , aesthetic clothes , vintage (hard to find some pieces) , clubs or schools for modern dancing or painting , just a smaaall area for skateboarding not even 3m , also no concerts (just rai and it's yukh) /// in other cities it's different but my city and the cities around us are the same if u wanna smthg go to the capital city or one of the big cities (small comparing by london for exp) or just buy it online
Those a DIY videos are most of the time not helpful here , if u wanna go out in my city u have 3 choices ( fast food , cafes , rests )( shopping )( just have some fresh air but not at the morning it'sso fckg hot )

There are the cutest pins I've ever seen!!!🤩
So what actually happened to the #1 plastic? I hear it will do the same thing but that it doesn't shrink as much. I'm all into recycling and #SaveTheMermaids so any plastic I can use will be beneficial.
is it true ?
@@venus-ir1os nope, unfortunately it didn't work for me haha. It didn't shrink very much at all and didn't get thicker/stronger either.
D
Yeah mine didnt work with the #1 plastic it worked when i did #6 plastic
@@zedyz8106 where did you get the #6 plastic?
Jen-"Oh...got a text message. That doesn't really happen very often."
Me-"Relatable😂"
I love how you show them in the oven so we don't burn the house down
Thxs
I can't find #6 plastic anywhere
Ou same ;)
I've been doing all the DIYs in all the past videos, but at this point my mom is questioning my sanity 🤣
hello Jen. I have a question. can you use microwave? thanks.
Isabel Oliva I HAVE TO KNOW
+Cinderella0203 Roblox but why? Btw thanks
i know this is late but DONT put plastic in the microwave. it may lead to some types of cancer if prolonged exposure!!!
Not trying to sound rude or pretentious at all, but you should look up how a microwave works. Then you will know why a microwave won't work and why an oven does. :) it's all about a transfer of heat to shrink the plastic; microwaves do not use heat like an oven, they use frequencies and waves.
Cry Baby okay thank you
Those are so cute!
bro she just drew a wholeass polaroid from memory, i cant even remember the colour of mine.
Just so some of y'all know, I found that Dairy Queen pre-made ice cream containers are number 6 plastic😂

Who all came to watch this video cause you thought that'd be fun, but aren't gonna make it cause don't have anything in house.
We don't have sharpies in my country
Yaaaaay
😹😹😹 I can relate
Y???
Which country do you even live in
Can I put the plastic in the microwave, and how long should I put it in
it only works in the oven! I'm pretty sure it'll explode or something in the microwave
Talen Tommo it does work I tried
I have the exact same cardigan
Skyzer 123 please tell the timings you set?
Skyzer 123 how long did you heat it up for
You can sand and color with color pencils before shrinking. It will intensify when shrinking.. So cute! Subscribed!

The only reason I’m watching this is because I can’t find band pins in hot topic.........;-;
Edit: Also, isn’t it toxic for plastic to be heated up in the oven? What other plastic can I use???
Pickle Gerard
You can buy shrinky dink plastic.
It’s what I use to make mine. They do the exact same thing, I find mine at my local dollar store
You can use a #7 plastic or something but I think it would have the same risks as the #6 but oh well
