Parents of Murdered Parkland Student Joaquin Oliver on Using Art to Demand End to Gun Violence

- democracynow.org - Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, return to class today, amid heavy security, after summer break. It was six months ago Tuesday when a former student, armed with a semiautomatic AR-15, gunned down 17 students, staff and teachers in just three minutes. It was one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. After the horrific attack, many of the students who survived the shooting became leading activists for gun control. Among the students killed at Stoneman Douglas High School was Joaquin Oliver. On Tuesday, Democracy Now! spoke to Joaquin’s parents, Manuel and Patricia Oliver, who have started a new nonprofit called Change the Ref to promote the use of urban art and nonviolent creative confrontation to expose the disastrous effects of gun violence.

I can say as a father myself that Manuel is wise and intelligent, full of love and compassion. Patricia is an awesome mother, the example for others. Joaquin was fortunate to be born into your family. Stay strong and keep fighting for the soul of our country. God bless you.

Culturally, demographically, I am as far removed from the Oliver family as I can imagine, but I have been drawn to their few appearances on the videos here. The trial now is at an end, and it was heart-wrenching to hear all of the families make their impact statements. Mr. Oliver's testimony and Victoria Gonzalez's touched a cord in me. In so many of these crimes, we are witnesses from a distance. The crater of impact only encompasses the family. When I hear the Oliver family, I imagine the orbit of the earth, the history of human existence, has changed with the loss of Joaquin. Joaquin's family is a beacon for us all.
That video was heartbreaking. Those poor parents.
I very rarely cry and I'm balling as I watch this.....this is so powerful....there's so much change we need to make happen....

I never knew Joaquin, but I will never forget him. My heart aches thinking about what he and all of the other victims went through. Kids should NOT have to hide from bullets. Anyone who thinks guns are greater than kids is sick.
As a father, I could only imagine the pain of a senseless loss of your child by a lunatic who got his guns with help of irresponsible gun laws. Bring attention to the forces who let loose gun laws to live and provide easy access to them by irresponsible gun owners.

I'm not one to defend U.S. law enforcement, but, they are not to blame for the gun laws or lack thereof. Also, I imagine that the FBI is swamped with reported gun nuts, and not staffed to handle each case with full attention that they deserve.

No parent should ever have to bury their children. But the cowards who were supposed to protect his child (FBI, teachers, on site security guard) should be buried under the prison. Dana Loesch put this whole distraction to rest. Taking guns from law abiding citizens isn't the solution.
No one is taking your gun if you are a law abiding citizen but if you are not mentally stable you should not get access to gun.
