If you're bleaching your hair, and you don't want to waste your time and money, add "Unred" packets to your bleach. (Add more for long and/or very reddish browns). Add "Unred" to your hair color too. This stuff works best.
Brad please make another “how to pick the right hair color for you” - quarantine has me on the verge of coloring at home and I need the guidance of our hair lord and savior Brad Mondo
if you end up with over toned hair (where its holding onto the base color ,violet, blue etc.) you can use a clarifying shampoo and it will remove the overtone.hope that helps you guys!!!
The part where you mentioned holding up your hair to a white sheet of paper; the only thing I wanted to comment on is that you may have better luck holding it against a gray sheet of paper. As an artist, we typically use gray as a background and base for figures because it allows us to determine the true color that we're using. White or black backgrounds/figure bases distort true color because there is too much brightness or too much contrast. Gray is in the middle, therefore showing us the true colors that we're using. Just wanted to share lol. Thank you for making these helpful videos!! Have a wonderful day love! :)

@@tarien2004 ...yes, you can. It completely depends on the hair quality you started with, the product you're using, and upkeep. I mean, I guess you can have no damage that you or anyone else noticed? Bleached twice within the last month and my hair looks and feels fine. 🤷♀️
@@jesse5658 although it may look and feel fine, the chemical formula for bleach is the definition of damaging. the bleach oxidizes the melanin molecule, ultimately permanently changing your hair color and texture. You may not be able to tell, but anyone with a cosmetology license would tell you the same
I recently read a response to a question about color from a stylist and she said "Please consult a stylist in person, we do not like giving free advice that we paid for our education." OPPOSITE OF BRAD MONDO❤❤❤❤❤ Thanks a million!!!!!
He should make merch saying "BLEACH DOESN'T LATHER" (someone down in the Comments said he should make merch saying "don't start at the roots" and I wanted to add this 1)😂😂
Sometimes the retail workers at Sally’s have no clue what on earth they are selling. I recently went there and was led in a very strange direction and none of my questions could be answered, so the staff person simply read labels of products to tell me what I needed. In the end I tried to remember what Brad had said, so definitely be aware and listen to Brad. 💕
A lot of us do read labels bc we don't remember exactly what a specific brand says. A lot of brands are different too, and I want to make sure I'm telling the person the correct ratios to mix. We're not all hairstylists but for my store, I can say we are pretty knowledgeable and yeah still learning but that's kinda how it goes just in life lol. I try to stop ppl from ruining their hair and usually suggest conditioner or a treatment when I feel their hair could use it. But yeah it is a job like target or sm I guess, I have 0 retail experience and they let me work there still
@MommyS I work at sallys and I don't think you'd need to tone your hair to put color over it, I'd suggest just getting it light enough for your color to take if that's what you're going for. But for t14, that's a pale ash blonde so you'd need to go pretty light for it to be able to tone your hair. I'm not sure if you're wanting lvl 8 or lvl 10 hair. For 8, just go with the color and for 10 use the toner once you're light enough.
Scarlett I understand you are trying to help customers not ruin our hair, and I appreciate that. I have ruined mine before, but that was all my fault. It is good for staff to know some concepts about hair bleaching, which it sounds like you do. That’s very helpful! In the situation I was in, the woman didn’t know what the toners were so I felt bad wasting her time when I can read the packaging and look it up myself.
I just toned my level 8 roots and level 9/10 ends with T14. It made the level 9 a dull GREY and the level 8 is now a dark brown. Just FYI. Now, I’m working on getting it back out. 🍋🚿🚿🚿He is definitely right about the dullness of permanent color. And now I realize the ash/grey looks awful on medium red brown skin 😅 I personally was better off with the warm level 8 orange!
I would pay a professional to bleach my hair as I'm after ash or silver hair from dark hair. I was refused by all hair dressers saying it will break etc. I did mine, bleached it twice and now I'm about 9 or 10. Waiting to tone it. My hair is fine, still soft and healthy.
Doesn't mean the cuticle isn't blown, or that it will hold color. It's great that you DIY after pros are smart enough to say "No, because having to do a "Do-over " when your color was gone in 2 shampoos means a loss of $$.
I went to a hairdresser. Had my hair bleached twice to get to lever 10. My hair is now yellow and fried. Wish I did it myself at home, at least I’d save tone of money
I would have loved seeing some examples where you show toning/toned level 8, 9 and 10 hair, just to see what results you can actually get. I'm sure it'd also be helpful for people who would otherwise waste their money and ruin their hair trying to get a result they can't actually achieve. :D
I wish I could Like it more than once! You solved all the problems in a single video! Also you have talent to teach! Your teaching method is fantastic! Thank you.
@@Aceyroch - if you go pastel, you probably know. Even at a level 10, the first time you color it, it will mostly just tone, no matter how long you leave it on. I always have to do blue, lavender and pink pastels twice.
@@estefanyaguilera4578 hey! I died my hair with box die once and low and behold, it did not lift! Ended up with orange hair! Purple shampoo did not work much at all for me. Blue shampoo did help much better, although it did not fully erase the brassiness since it is just a shampoo. However, in saying that, it went from bright orange to a more neutral tone with brassy highlights. I lived with it for years before I got it touched up!

Meee 👋🏻 got let go from my job on Thursday due a lack of work (hotel industry.) this mid 20’s crisis has led to me needing to change my hair up a bit 😂😂
I went to a salon and they refused to do my hair saying they are too damaged. I wanted to go from burgundy red (already faded a bit) to my natural ash blonde, possibly with ombre into blonde if at all possible. They said my hair will break if they try to get rid of this color. So I decided to do it myself. Bought a color remover and it got rid of ALL of the red without damaging my hair at all. If I can do it at home, then why do they refuse to do it in the salon? I will redo the color remover to get rid of last bits of orange and then either look for a toner myself and then dye, or go to different hairdresser who won't have to use bleach, just tone it and dye it. Job done.
I went to cosmology school and had a horrible experience because everyone else in the class already knew most things and I was a beginner and my teacher was shitty not gona lie. She seemed like she didn't have patience for the one student who wasn't experienced. However Brad, you've opened my eyes back up to this and are kinda making me want to go back to school somewhere different and try again.
That is a horrible teacher! I understand they have to teach the material in a short time but if you have students at different places then it is your job to bring them to the same level before moving forward. Especially if you are just starting out in Cosmetology school. Because if you are just starting you can't and shouldn't think you know everything already. I have always found it best to put aside what I think I know and approach learning with an open mind. I wish you the best moving forward and hope you have an amazing experience if you give it another go and find a school that fits your needs. Be the best you!
Brad, I am so so blessed rn.. 😅 I walked up to Sally’s yesterday with the intent of buying T18 from Wella, only for it to be closed.. divine intervention from the God’s kicked in... there’s a reason why I’m watching this right now.😂😅😅
I just luv Brad Mondo, sometimes I watch his videos on hair just to see him and have a good laugh. Very uplifting. Thank you Brad . Luv from Australia ❤
Adorable and my mom is a hairdresser and has trued to explain this to me for YEARS AND in LESS than 14 MINUTES I finally understood what the freak she has been trying to tell me!!! THANK YOU, Brad..u adorable queen you!!!
Brad's explanation is an A+++! Love, love love! NOW, I finally understand the chemistry and science of how I get the results that I get with my hair. About 4 years ago, after paying around $150 to have my hair professionally bleached platinum, I decided to do it myself. I've been bleaching my hair platinum blonde since then with perfect results every time (except once during COVID when I - oops! - in a hurry, processed my hair too fast and my hair broke off in spaghetti-like strings - Brad has a video on this which I wish I had watched, lol!). Note that before I did it myself for the first time, I watched several (many!) videos on RUclips and am able to get the snowy, white result with very little damage. It takes 2 days of bleaching with lots of coconut and argan oil to start off each bleaching session. I finish off with a "flash" ash toner - yes, T18 (meaning I leave it on max for 2 minutes). Note: my hair is very short such that in 1.5 months I cut all the platinum off and begin again with virgin, dark ash blonde hair.
Currently bleaching my hair from brown(natural/roots) and a very very very faded out purple, and I’m going peach. So this video is just what I need even though I’ve watched it 20 million times already lol. I watch it every time I want to tone my hair because there’s so much info in this video that my brain can’t process all of it 😂
My hair is a level 9 with level 8 on the ends and when I went to Sally Beauty today, the girl who worked there recommended T14 to get my hair silver, so I think someone watches your videos xD
@@princess-ml7vp unfortunately it was still really yellow 😭 i ended up mixing a tiny amount of purple dye into some purple conditioner and I got a really light purple/silver so that kinda worked
I put t14 on my level 9 hair the other day and it turned green. It was ashy and pretty inside but once I stepped outside it had a green hue to it. Ugh.
Brad might I just say on behalf of all of us girls trying to find our perfect shade in this crazy hair world thank you !!! to Brad out own little hair God!
Accurate! Most of the women working at Sally’s or any beauty supply store including Cosmoprof are either estheticians (meaning they NEVER studied hair in school- cosmetologists do), or they don’t have any sort of formal training for the beauty industry. This is coming from a cosmetology student.
3 out of the 4 employees at my Sally store are professionals and have been doing hair for 30+ years. That’s not to say that they won’t hire people with no prior experience, they do, BUT it’s not fair to put that label on every Sally employee. We DO have to go through an extensive 2-week training about color theory, different types of bleaches/dyes/toners, and after-hair-care.
@@hunnybee271 I agree! It’s just to get people out on the floors. After that, there are monthly training activities we have to sit through and interact with in the office, and we get tested twice a year on our overall knowledge. If there’s an area we’re lacking in, we have to refresh with learning courses. Not all employees are gonna be as motivated to learn, but at least in my case, I make sure I ask my coworkers questions if there’s ever an issue I can’t help a customer with, that way I understand how/why things work. You’re right though, 2 weeks isn’t nearly enough to cover everything, and I don’t think Sally employees should be giving concrete advice if they really aren’t sure. I don’t have a problem telling customers I honestly don’t know, and a lot of them appreciate my honesty so I don’t misguide them and ruin their hair.
"Hi beautiful." That sweet dose of Brad love just makes my morning. Brad darling, could you do a video on toning down red? I've been red for awhile but now I want to get back to my natural brunette. I used an ash color on the advice of the lovely lady at my local Sally's, and that helped, but not enough. Thanks for all that you do and all the love and fun you give us.
YOU ARE A LIFE SAVERRRR. I’m seriously considering bleaching my hair to get that balayage effect but I’m doing my due diligence and researching the heck out of it before making the leap and you have been the BIGGEST help!! It can feel overwhelming but you’re helping get the confidence to do it. Now, fingers crossed I don’t fuqqq upppp lol
This was a good knowledge refresher. You Made a valid point they don’t know at Sally’s. (Unless they are coincidentally licensed as a cosmetologist) but the workers are not expected to have a legal license.
A good tip too: Go to Sally's and match your hair shade to an existing hair swatch. The blondes are colored 8, 9, and 10. They also tell you the undertones of that particular swatch. If you match up to an 8G swatch, that means dark blonde with gold (orange tones). Get a blue based level 8 toner. This way, you won't have to guess, buy the wrong thing, and end up with raunchy hair. This works for other colors too. Some even have recommended toners on the back of the box!!!!
@@lalamarie003 I've been bleaching my hair since high school, and I honestly thought that's what they were there for until an employee looked at me sideways 🤔🤭
@@lalamarie003 don't take advice from sally's workers. they arent trained or certified in cosmotology 90% of the time and will just advise you to use whatever they want. hair isn't "one size fits all" and that goes for hair products, swatches, etc. you have natural undertones that you need to pay attention to. there's a reason a professional made this video

No wonder rainbows always looked better when I drew them on grey paper, wow! Thank you!
Totally happened to me! Went to Sally’s, asked where the toner was, the gal immediately took me to T-18! I said “no, Brad Mondo says no T-18! Lol she looked at me like I was crazy. You cannot bleach with no damage. Bleach IS damage. What I think you mean is you didn't fry it completely, and for that I say awesome!!
I can't... Been doing this professionally for over 30 years. The editing and advice is so annoying, and scary! So much more to it's than this. Lasted 13 minutes... Just awful! Million$, I know, but I don't know how or why. ED D DII TTT L EEE SS SSS S!
@@tarien2004 ...yes, you can. It completely depends on the hair quality you started with, the product you're using, and upkeep.

@@jesse5658 although it may look and feel fine, the chemical formula for bleach is the definition of damaging. the bleach oxidizes the melanin molecule, ultimately permanently changing your hair color and texture. OPPOSITE OF BRAD MONDO❤❤❤❤❤ Thanks a million!!!!!
He should make merch saying "BLEACH DOESN'T LATHER"
(someone down in the Comments said he should make merch saying "don't start at the roots" and I wanted to add this 1)😂😂
And "color doesn't lift up color." Hahaah
MommyS oh no! I hope it’s growing back quickly! I’ve been there before. Big chunks of hair broke off before I learned what toner was.
Messed up my hair color yesterday after listening to a Sally's worker. I knew I should've trusted my own research.
This should be used for Sally’s training purposes lol love the store, but like you said they try to recommend products that aren’t the best for you.
Sally’s employees ONLY recommend Wella T18 if you’re blonde and want to get rid of brass. They need this video 100%.
FACTS
That’s because Sally’s isn’t a professional store, so they don’t really know anything.
Most arent licensed stylists. Very few are.
@@GenevieveMathews-bu4ve it is a professional store, but the employees aren't professional stylist.
Wish I did it myself at home, at least I’d save tone of money

brad mondo needs to come out with his own hair color and toners that are accessible to others than just licensed cosmetologists.

I have phobia of hair salons, every one I went to are too judgy and just make me plain uncomfortable so I sweared to NEVER visit a hair salon 🙃

I watch it every time I want to tone my hair because there’s so much info in this video that my brain can’t process all of it 😂
I have watched about ten in a row on toning. Do I get it? Nope, not really. Is there anything between my ears? Nope, not reaaaaally.

I'm pausing every 30 seconds and going back and forth more times than I'd l like to admit.

The girls at Sally’s are not professional hair dressers. Do not ask them!!!
I only ask the ones who have funky hair :)
@@l.w.5183 that's awesome that they provide training but 2 weeks isn't enough to fit all that info /:
