  • In this video I make a bait tank to keep my minnows alive for long periods of time! I have never done this but I think it turned out pretty well. Comment below if you have any suggestions.

Looks good. You should start trapping minnows to save yourself money! I use a Gee's minnow trap. Cost about $50 for 4 of them. I have a creek on my property so I've setup a little holding pen for them but your tank I'm sure would work to. And trapping minnows is actually pretty fun, particularly when you catch a nice fish on one you trapped!!

a person could save a lot of money this way. A update video would be good about the filter issue and how your fish did after a week? I normally take the left overs home and put them in salt and into the freezer. good for all seasons. good job on the video

I use a garbage pale and a random filter from pet store in my garage. try to maintain a bit of a drop from filter to water for aeration and that seems to be enough to keep minnows for over a month at least. Filter was way under size suggested for volume in the pale but that doesn’t seem to matter!

Hey ryan! It worked quite well. The water stayed clear for nearly a month. After that i decided to add in a filter. I believe it was a topfin if40. I did not feed them as that creates more waste and from my research it seems to make them die quicker. The most important thing is keeping the water cold and oxygenized.

Another tip is try finding things at home or at the pet store so then the minnows can hide and maybe a branch of leaves because they love rocks and they eat leaves and bugs

It's one inch of fish per gallon to keep them alive. You still should run a filter to cycle contaminates out.

hey Wireworks! thanks for the comment, im not sure how many fish I had in it, but they did live for easily 4 weeks. Its important to note that I did add a filter... i should have from the start, but I didnt even think of it, and given these were bait fish, for fishing I didnt keep them for too long

These are emerald shiners. Minnows like algae as well as minnows. Emerald Shiners mostly eat insects. Maybe rarely do they eat algae, if they’re starving. Try buying tiny insects or worm like animals, like leeches

I bought some minnows the other day. They all died. Im not sure why?
I set up the tank and put an sponge air filter in and within a day the water got cloudy. They all died within a week. Im not sure what I did wrong. The tank was around 67 degrees there was only 12 minnows a 5 gallon tank
