As a teen, a friend and I spent a few years culling a stunted pond full of small bluegill. We would catch hundreds of small ones a day and pitch them in the woods for the raccons. Although earth worms were a bait of choice we were literally at times catching them off bare hooks About five years later we were landing much larger ones, including some hybrids. We also noticed an increase in the bass population. Somehow as kids and from reading countless fishing magazines we had an intuition what needed to be done to turn that pond around. It took a few years but absolutely worked.

Love catching bluegill from a little pond near my house. Recently began using Spam as bait. Cut into small cubes and heat in the microwave for a minute to get rid of excess moisture so it stays on the hook. Also caught a couple of good sized catfish using this bait.

Something I learned to use for brim and sunfish several years ago is using a tiny piece of one of my old bass worms and put it on a small hook. I forgot my red worms and needed to catch some brim for catfish bait. And now I rarely ever buy live worms to catch brim as long as the sun's out cause that worked so well. When I was growing up my family grew crickets commercially and sold them over a large area. Our cricket buckets weren't the ones you buy at the bait shops, they were 5 gallon buckets with screen wire stapled over large holes cut in the sides. When we went fishing the way we found the big ones was to literally toss a handful of bugs on the water. If the big ones didn't start popping them pretty quickly we moved on to a different spot. I always had a rig ready with a hook and no weight. When we tossed the crickets in I'd toss my line in the bunch. Never failed to get me hooked up, that topwater action was a blast.

So much fun catching bluegills!!! I've been getting tons of them lately (in the 6 - 9" range, looking for a 10") just throwing a crappie magnet grub on a 1/32 oz jig at my local ponds. I use the Gulp scented products (minnows or tipping the jig with a crappie nibble) when the bite is slow (cold water and middle of the summer) and they work great but right now here in NC the bite is on and they are very aggressive, hitting the jig as soon as it hits the water. I've caught a bunch of bass as well with them, they catch everything!

Beer batter and panfish deep fried will really surprise you how good it is! We’d catch them, clean them and fillet the meat off the sides and de-skin and put them in milk cartons, cover with water and freeze. You can keep adding fish fillets until full. When you have several cartons of fish meat…thaw them and fry them! Wonderful tasting white fish meat!

Been baiting trot lines for years with hot dog chunks and they produce almost as good as crawfish tails or shrimp We joke around here that we knew a trick to turn a 99 cent pack of hot dogs into a catfish dinner That price aught to tell you how long we been doing it
Buy the cheapest dogs ya can find cut em into chunks about as long as the dogs are thick Just before you head out the door stick em it the microwave just long enough to get the juices flowing an stick em on your hook in the outside and out the other outside skin of the dog then tip the point back in a little so the fish don’t feel it till it’s too late Trot lines limb lines cane pole yo-yo or fishin rod it don’t matter they’ll all work Good luck an Tight lines
