- How I built my chest freezer bait tank to keep my minnows alive long term, especially those creek chubs that tend to die if the water isn’t kept cool and clean.

• Chest Freezer Bait Tan...
Thank you fir your time and sharing. Nice bait keeper Sir. I’m saving and building me one. Thanks again. Subscribed and ringing the bell.
Thanks I appreciate it!
Some great ideas.... thanks for sharing!
This is genius man......i am impressed!! so cool
Awesome set up...👍
Thanks!
Sam’s Club has a 5 cu ft for 169 and a 7 cu ft for 219 dollars right now. That’s with warranty.
I saw a guy with a set up for live bait that circulated the water in a 250 gallon water reservoir (one of those clear tanks with the metal grid cage around the sides)and the two pumps were circulating the water 3 times a day. One skimmed from the top and the other from the bottom into a big heavy plastic trash can with these scrubbers floating in it to put good bacteria back into the tank but he put suckers and gold fish in it to make that bacteria grow on the scrubbers floating in the trash can with the pump in it. He said the bacteria their poop produced on the scrubbers was necessary to indefinitely keep the fish alive
Looked look like a good set up. He had a piece of plexiglass for a lid over the top of one of those 250 water reservoirs.
Great video and very nice build you have there
Thanks!
Great setup
Thank you
Dude genius
FYI, they make these cool things called uniseal....I have 150gal stock tank ,connected to a 55gal biofilter...I used 2 inch pipe but they come in sizes Starting at 1inch I think....it's perfect for connecting pipe to drums ,tanks ,buckets or even a flat bulkhead...but really shines for curved surfaces
Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to check them out for whenever I build another one.
Also, rubber cement would work best to seal the corners
My fiance just got one of these freezers and I was gonna use a huge one that we stopped use when she got that one but when I seen this I told her like I might get one of these to do it
Hi. Enjoyed the bait tank video. Just have made one up and was wondering on you clean the bottom? I went a different route and used a a 700 gallon per hour external aquarium filter and a separate pump for air. Hope to have fish in it this week.
It stays pretty clean with the filter, but if I do a large water change I wipe the whole freezer down with a rag.
Murph, great stuff here. I am making this as you suggested. Can you put up a link to the Well Nut. I can’t seem to find them in the larger size. I need one just under 3/4”. Thanks
I just found the well nut at the local hardware store, but I switched it to just a rubber stopper that I found at Menards and just shoved it in there. Works much better than the well nut did.
Great setup. I’m going make one and copy some of your ideas. How much bait can you keep in that size freezer ????
I keep up to 100 bigger minnows in it and they seem to be fine, I bet I could keep more though. You can keep a ton of smaller sized ones in it. The colder you keep the water, the more minnows you can keep.
Great work! What temp do you recommend setting?
Thanks! 65f would be the highest temp I would go. Usually I keep it anywhere from 40-60 depending on the time of year and what water temps are in the lakes I’m fishing.
Hey bud awesome video and amazing setup but just wondering does it not freeze the water since it is a freezer cause I’m wanting to do the same thing but with creek chubs and is there any adjustments you think I should make with creek chubs compared to minnows?
Nope the temperature control keeps it from freezing, I keep mine in a 6 degree range based on what the water temps are in the lakes around me, currently my tank is anywhere from 53-59 degrees, but that will be lowered as we get later into fall and winter. They’re pretty much the same as minnows, just keep the water cold and they’ll be fine.
@@murph9567 ok awesome thanks 👍 also so the thing at the end of the video is that what controls the temperature
Yup the inkbird ITC-308
@@murph9567 Ok thanks for the reply and imma look and see if I can find a chest freezer and start on mine 👍
How did you connect the PVC to the pump? More silicone?
Most pond pumps have a threaded insert that goes on the discharge, so I just went to the hardware store and got a threaded PVC end that fit it.
Won't the plywood warp from the moisture from water evaporating
That’s why I sealed it.
How often do you change your filter material and when you do that do you just replace the filter material or just rinse it off?
I rinse off any pieces that get really dirty maybe a few times a year. You want all the bacteria that are living in there to stay so you don’t want to clean it often.
@@murph9567 thank you. Great video. Going to start mine today.
Do you ever have problems with the pump sucking minnows up?
No I only have larger minnows on the side of the tank with the pump that are too big to be sucked in.
Did the galvanized inside the freezer kill the minnows? I want to make one but was told I need the plastic inside because galvanized will kill off the fish.
Never been a problem for me.
Most are aluminum not galvanized steel.
When you first put this together did u loose quite a few minnows ?
Yes it takes awhile for the bio filter to build up bacteria and start working, but once it’s going then they should rarely die. Or if you use tap water from the city that will kill them as well.
What do you feed the bait
Nothing, I use them within a month of putting them in there.
Hey man awesome video. Any chance you could tell me the length and size of pvc pipe you used?
The intake is 3/4” pvc and discharge is 1 1/4” pvc. You can use other sizes though depending on what pump you have. Length depends the size freezer you have.
I got a 5cu ft chest freezer. By the way good luck this next season. Hopefully you sign with a team.
Thanks man. You shouldn’t need more than about 4ft of either pipe size.
@@murph9567 did you use screws or glue to hold the insulation board to the plywood?
I used the cheapest 2 part epoxy they had at Walmart
How often do you need to do a total water clean out?
Not very often, every few months. As long as the poly fill in the filter gets changed regularly it stays pretty clean.
@@murph9567 what about smell? debating putting one in the garage or basement... currently use coolers that always seem to stink after awhile
The bio filter removes most of the bacteria that causes smell. It doesn’t smell nearly as much as my Engel bait cooler.
what kinda pump you use
It’s just an old pond pump I had, I’m not sure what brand it is. I believe I say how many gallons per hour it pumps in the video though.
Hey Murph. Just wondering how long do your minnows stay alive in a system like this?
I don’t have an exact time for ya as I usually use them before they die, but easily over a month and many will last 2-3 months. The colder you have it the longer the minnows will last.
Thanks for the reply! Great build. This inspired me thank you
@@coreylefrancois2938 no problem, I’m glad to hear it!
