Very nice project. Like how the filter came off ice shanty buddy. Saves a lot of dough from buying bait.
Nice job dude, a well thought out build that is effective and efficient. I need a garage live well for my shad, I fish for Striper. This should do the trick, thanks for the post.
I really like your setup
Great idea!, I can adapt this system to my aquaponics. Grow my veggies and raise some tilapia at the same time. this is much cheaper than purchasing a large fish tank and the best part it's insulated and you can cool it down if you need to. 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟
I just want to thank you for the tips on the tank!! The keeping the water cold with the timer etc.. Also the filter scrubbers, Im a striped bass fisherman and I have been having an issue trying to keep my eels alive. And you my friend hit the nail right on the head, with the freezer tips.Thank you
You prolly dont care but does anyone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any help you can offer me.
@Cain Jad Instablaster ;)
@Ray Emmitt Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Ray Emmitt it did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out!
@Cain Jad you are welcome :D
Why keep the water so cold? You can buy a thermostat on Amazon very cheap to regulate temp in freezer.
Interesting design. Should work pretty good!
Nice setup. You should look into insulating your filter and plumbing. that should help your condensation problem.
Nice video man
Great video
good stuff well done
Very nice setup
Thank you for the video
The water needs to be very cold?
A suggestion for your temperature control would be a temperature controller for a beer cooler/kegerator.
It uses a temp probe to turn the freezer on and off based off your desired temperature parameters.
It will be way more accurate and efficent then a simple outlet timer.
Ian Singer that’s what I originally wanted to do. I’ll have to look into it.
Thanks for the video. I'd skip the scrubbies, almost no bio activity at those temps. Most pond people shut their bio filters down below 50 or so degrees
I use a 10 gal fish tank. Put like 100 shiners in it and trap more as I use them. Water changes every week and filter change every month. Seem to work for me.
Should of drilled a extra hole where you got the wood for the other pump pipes. That way the discharge gose back into tank. Incase of pump failure. No dead fish or mold growth from water leaks
Very cool idea man. Thanks for sharing! liked and subscribed.>>>>>>>
How much did this cost in total
does that return just freefall water back in tank
I built this same setup thanks to your video. I was wondering do you leave the pump and aerator running all the time and how many gallons does your aerator do. I have one that does about 40 gallons do you think that is ok?
Joseph Broza I have a more In depth video on this but mines about 3-500 gallons per hour. I leave jt running all the time
How long does it take to chill water?
Awesome video, I have been scratching my head on how to built this type of set up in my garage. If I can suggest here is a cold temp controller that I will be installing on mine, Johnson Control A19AAT on Amazon $99.50 CAD. Regulate the temperature in your freezer between 20 - 80F or -6 to 26DegC.
Thanks again for creating this video
S SSTL if you watch my last video on this tank I actually installed a thermostat that does regulate the temp. Did that this year. Worked great!
Great I figured you already had lol, thank you again for the info..
Just getting my chest freezer going..just curious what your using to treat your water? I’m in town near a brook up in Houlton..mine doesn’t run..it will be out in the garage for the winter..hoping a small aquarium heater will keep it from freezing plush a decent size aerated..want to do a filter like yours..might hold off and just do the water change once a week or so? Looking at the “better bait” system to keep the water quality up! Tight lines bussy
Buddy
I’m just using the filter right now. With that I only need about 1 or 2 water changes per season. Depending on how much bait I have. I also will be using the better bait chemical this year
I am building my bait tank like yours but putting mine in the back of my garage which is not insulated. I am wondering what size pvc piping you used and any other info you could give me to get started thank you.
Joseph Broza check out my other video on the set up. It’s more in depth
Do you let the water pump running all the time or is it on a timer
All the time
I have the same setup, but having problems with my shinners dieing,What's the best water temperature for shinners? How long should they normally live without feeding them? Thanks..
I’m 40-42 degrees. Don’t overload it. If the water gets cloudy drop some carbon/zeolite mix into the filter. They will last months without food. Let them sit in an bucket for a few days before putting them into your tank. That’s let’s them get a lot of waste out of their system and out of your tank.
@@mainetroutwhisperer Thank You, for the reply back, the local fisheries said I should be at 55*...I will drop my temp.
Ok cool never would have thought you could run the compressor and regulate the temp that way without taxing it to much or making the water to cold but I see the key is the timer . Nice idea. Also curious how do you clean the filter and you mentioned you do complete water changes if so why ? That defeates the purpose of what the filter is doing ?
sam111880 just tracks the filter out and rise it off. I do maybe 2 half water changes a season. When you have 40 dozen fish it doesn’t tend to keep up well. Lol. I always over load it.
@@mainetroutwhisperer I might want to try a little fish hatchery project in this basement. It has come to my attention glass aquriums which are usually much more expensive are not much better in quality for raising fish. You could uses any container even plastic provided it won't leak. So I was think of using my 20 gallon plastic bin. It's in good condition and I was only going to raise a few dozen fish at Max. What your opinion on that. Am I missing anything with enclosures just so long is they don't leak you should be good is my thought?
My other thought is it's the pump / filter and aerator that dictates the living quality of the fish / water quality over time so if you get that equipment right the container you uses should matter as much as long as it doesn't leeche harmful toxics into the water or have had harmful water polluting chemicals in it that would leeche out. Let me know if I am missing any major thing with containers... Want to play this small experiment really cheap until I get a feel for it... Possible upgrading it
Note the basement never gets below freezing but most months of the year I say it's 50 to 70 deg range in winter it could possible get into high 40 deg range but do you think I should get some cooler/heater stick to regulate temp or just the filter/pump and aerator is enough. If the normal temp in that range. You seem to like keeping everything really cool like 30 to 40 deg range but it could greatly vary with what type of fish variety your raising like to here your opinions... And what type of shiners or other fish are you raising what are you feeding them as well? Thanks for the response your setup looks great very professional looking
@@sam111880 Its just a large fish/aquarium tank. So look up stuff for that and just upscale it. I also have an updated vido on this where i installed a thermostat. Just search it in my videos. Im only holding my bait for a few months for ice fishing. I trap it, let them sit in a bucket for a few day to get all the crap out of them, then put them in the tank. I like leaving the tank in the mid 40s. Keeps bacteria down and over levels down. Dont feed them at all. Thats where you get into issues. If you have a smaller amount of fish it would prob be ok, your filter might keep up.. idk.. If the amonia levels spike you will have a massive die off. I always add a mix of carbon/zeolite to my filter to help with that. Container should matter as long as it holds water.
bring it up to about 40°
I was in Ocho Rios Jamaica in this picture
TONY Gray sick dog 🐕
How does it suck the water outta the bottom of the bucket to go back innto the main tank?
Cat Daddy Fishin gravity it fills past the level of the discharge and flows out
About how many gallons will the tank be then?
Jon Sorensen it holds about 50, but I don’t fill it. I’d say around 40
Ya were building one for this summer catfishing and were trying to figure out pump sizes and all that. We got the filtration figured out. No bucket like yours it sites in the water with what ever pump we are going to use. We thought about a sump pump but are worries about heating up the water maybe. We got a 10 gal freezer so we figured about 80 gal of water full so maybe 70 gals. So the pond pump your using sounds like it may work well for us. Thanks
Jon Sorensen it works great! I’ve linked it in the description. Few people have built a tank like this since my video and worked well for them as well
Put the freezer on some bricks to avoid rust if u get water down there
how often you change the water ?
nightmarehollow5 I changed it twice this year (75% water change) Ran from Nov-April.
Maine Trout Whisperer did you caulk up the freezer first , the corners and bottom ?
nightmarehollow5 yes. All the seams
I see you must have seen my bait tank filter build on iceshanty.com and. Well done, Freshbait aproves. Good luck this year
Yes I think it was from you!
Glad too see my thread is still alive and well helping other people . Another thing that I’ve found is a PID controller to set the temp and it’ll keep the water in the freezer at that temp by kicking the freezer on/off.
Jeremy Gourde where do you get that?
Where do the shiners go in the rivers and cold water? I can always find them during the summer but they like disappear when I need them for ice fishing of course lol
Massbass Outdoors best place to set traps is in the shallow weed area/near laydowns. But even better are small little private ponds. Just like farm ponds/golf course.
How many fish can you put in that fish tank. I'm thinking of using it for smelts which won't last as long as shiners.
not sure, but as I said in the video i have about 8doz in there now and it doesnt look like many fish. It can hold alot.
Any issues with rust?
bankrup3001gt no not yet
Hows the ink bird working out for you. When you had it on a timer and the water temps were at 31 were you getting ice
bankrup3001gt works awesome. Yeah had some ice. Not anymore
How often does the freezer run?
Not fish safe! Get better silicone!
