I like it when you show how you make/set up your gear. I love to do little projects like this. Very cool. We have cats. Those Tidy Cat boxes are useful for so many things. I have many, many that i have repurposed for many different things!
Great idea for ur bait tank. I use a 55 gal. Plastic barrel cut in half. In my garage it gets so hot! I can't keep my blue gills alive much more than a couple of days. I even use an additive in my water.
Nice setup! I like the tiny cat box! Definitely “River Certified” when you can reuse garbage from the river/water that somebody litter in the first place! 👍
We have a small outside pond that we built a very similar filter system for. Obviously I hadn’t seen your video yet but I got my ideas from SC Fish Keeping. Actually did start it off with the plan of it being a bait tank but without being able to keep it indoors temperature regulation, more so here in NC, keeping the water cool enough for shiners, was almost impossible. So it became a goldfish pond. lol
Nice man! I use to have one made out of a deep freezer, but ended up just not using it may have to start one up again. Some times it's good to have one like after the rain where I'm at some times after the rain the bait that I'm trying to catch just does not want to bite. Great video!
Been using lava rock works well but thank you gonna use sotchbrite pads as well got a 200 gal. Rock in bucket with the pump. A4inch 4ft section of pvc with rock inside as well supended above tank also going to use your pvc idea for the cover before your patent kicks in lol
Yeah I slapped a bait tank together last summer and didn’t filter it. Just aerated it. Didn’t work out, unless you’re into killin perfectly good flathead bait. So if I’m gonna keep Let’s say a couple dozen chubs/gills alive for whatever length of time, how often would I need to change out the filtration media? Go Cubs Go!
Vonklink6741 I never change the media. I scoop a bucket of water out of the tank and rinse out the media in the bucket. Don't hide it off cuz that'll kill your beneficial bacteria. Go Cubs!
@@davidvanwinkle5648 nope, I treat it with the stuff in this video. The link to it is in the video description 😁 ruclips.net/video/f7wTcGIctvE/видео.html
So simple and effective!. I've been overthinking mine to the point I havnt finished it lol. I'm gonna do it this way. Do you have a problem with keeping bait cool? or do you just use it up fast enough to not worry about it? Also, do you use better bait in your tank or just in your portable bait cooler?
The water does get pretty hot in the summer, but they don't seem to mind. I lose 1-5 baits a week, but I think that's pretty standard even in commercial tanks. Yep, I put better bait in everything. Hope that helps!
Hey pal, I have a bait tank. Not as cool as urs. My biggest problem is I can't keep the water cool enough. My garage isn't finished and gets hot inside. Is there a better way that u can think of? Thx man!
Just what i needed to see brother 👊,how about water temp? Im wondering if i make one and keep it in the shade in my yard the water will get too warm and cause them to die?
Nice! I start with 10-20 creek chubs (a fish that doesn't muck up the water too bad), and they get it started. I never take every fish out of the tank either.
Sorry for the late reply man! I usually rinse it out in water from the tank (no chlorine) about once every 4-6 weeks. If I have bullheads, every 2-3 weeks. Thanks for watching!
Hey spencer, just curious if this current set up stinks up the garage at all?? Wanna build a similar system either in my garage or basement but not if it stinks lol
Do you think a bilge pump would work the same way as your pond pump, and be more durable, without having to go through a charcoal box? Or is the charcoal for ammonia removal a necessity with bait fish? Thanks, great video
The pond pump is basically a bilge pump that you plug into an outlet. The filter isn't completely necessary, but the charcoal and beneficial bacteria remove ammonia and the gravel and scotch bright pads remove dirt and gunk. Not necessary, but you will have to change the water more often.
how do you keep your water cool ? my garage gets very hot in the summer time so a little worried that it will get to hot for them and they will die . i am planning on doing same set up my pump does 1600gph and same 100gal tank as you thank you for the help i fish the Missouri up in omaha nebraska
@@RiverCertified ok thank you not sure if i can use mine that fast sometimes i cant get out that much , i wish i could but i cant , do you feed them at all ? i will be keeping bullhead as well
I've thought about that, but at a buck a bait and going through approximately 3000 baits a year, it's the best decision for me. I guess you just have to evaluate your position.
@@RiverCertified Yeah it definitely depends on how often you fish and how much bait you use. Sounds like a great use of electricity for you. Plus if you catch your own bait like I've seen in a few of your videos they're natural and worth much more and good to keep alive.
Jim Kasak fingers crossed, I haven't in the last year and a half, but I do worry about it when it gets hot. I'll make modifications down the road if I have to. Hope the video gives you some good ideas!
Yeah I just set up an old 20 gallon fish tank with a filter to try. I had a trough like yours but gave it to a buddy. He currently is using it as a doggie pool I may have to convince him it has a better function.
I really need a filter for mine. I got the same 95 gallon tank. But I really need a filter. Dang do i. That’s next year’s project. Well. That’s this winters project
River Certified I def will. But it’s going to be in the winter. To much fishing to do lol. I’ve looked at a million ways to do a filter and I still dont know what to pick. I like yours. Especially since it’s for the same size as mine.
So just an FYI, based off my research of filters. Activated carbon adsorbs a number of dissolved contaminants such as chloramine and chlorine, tannins (which color the water), and phenols (which cause odors). It will help keep aquarium water from turning yellow over time. It is important to understand that there are several important toxins that activated carbon does not remove. Most notably, it does not remove ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate. Therefore, it does not aid in toxin removal during the initial aquarium setup. Water changes or other methods must be used to address elevated ammonia, nitrite, or nitrate levels.
I know you said you use better bait in a three pound jar to treat your water. There are several of those to choose from. Could you please be a little more specific about you use please. I enjoy your videos. I've not had good luck treating my city water. Thank you and best wishes.
They do, go to an aquarium shop. They also sell net pouches so you can use what ever kind of carbon you want. The best to use is activated coconut carbon

That's what I used to have. Never had issues with bait dying very often tho. Do you run a filter tho? They make a difference
Yes , I need to upgrade the one I have now. I know of a guy who turned a flat deep freezer in to an awsome live well. He's never lost bait.
Nice setup! I like the tiny cat box! Definitely “River Certified” when you can reuse garbage from the river/water that somebody litter in the first place! 👍

Hey I noticed that when ever I put small shiners in my tank that they actually get bigger after a few month of feeding them dog food.
That looks like something a small town science teacher would knock together. I like it, and am jealous of it.

How do you go about water changes and cleaning the filtration media and how often? Thanks in advance just recently made a similar bait tank.
Absolutely flawless
How often do you rinse or change out the charcoal filter.. this one looks super simple an very effective.. thank you for sharing
Maybe twice a year. They pretty much sustain themselves once the beneficial bacteria get going.
@@RiverCertified ok awesome.!!!!!! That makes it even simpler lol..
Next question.. sorry lol... did you fill it from your spigot an just run it for awhile before dumping your bait in

I'm in the same boat and don't have many issues. I think the filtration helps a lot.
Do you feed your baitfish and if so what do you feed them?
you can feed them goldfish flakes they do jus fine with it
that's what I feed mine.
I feed my crushed up dog food . Sometimes i will chop up dead crickets or worms too, but careful not to over feed them because they will die
how long did you wait until the 5200 cure before you put water and fish?
Just what i needed to see brother 👊,how about water temp? Im wondering if i make one and keep it in the shade in my yard the water will get too warm and cause them to die?
I'm not sure how much water temp matters, at least for sunfish, bullheads, and bluegills. That tank gets freaking hot and they usually do just fine.
I was curious if/what you feed them? Just commercial flakes like goldfish or something else?
I don't feed them. It makes the water gross and they aren't in there long enough for it to be a problem.
Just setup a deep freeze tank today. Did you use anything to first establish the beneficial bacteria?
Nice! I start with 10-20 creek chubs (a fish that doesn't muck up the water too bad), and they get it started. I never take every fish out of the tank either.
Next question, do you run it all 24/7?
How often do you change out/clean the filter supplies? (Scotch brite etc)
PS this rules your work is my inspiration

Not that I notice, but I keep it aired out and windows up a lot. I think the recirculating water helps a lot with that.

Im been using an old boat mold to keep my fish in. Im been wondering how i can get the water more clear in it.

Is it worth it really though? How much in electricity does that pump use? Probably spending just as much on electricity as you do on bait.
