    La primera vez que Colombia jugaba en Europa, jugaron Didi Valderrama y Carlos valderrama.

    Look at the empty stands behind the goal which Colombia defended in the first half and England in the second.

    Back then we thought Barnes and Waddle so good that we were willing to play a natural left footer on the right flank. For most of the last two decades we have had right footers on the left flank, not because they are really amazing but because we don't think any of the natural left footers are good enough.

    Peter Shilton - 125 caps from 1970 - 1990. A quarter of that time was spent at Forest, during which time he won the League Championship, two European Cups, A supercut, and two League Cups. In comparison, his caps whilst at Forest account for about a fifth of his total caps.
    Viv Anderson - 30 Caps in ten years. 60% of that time ( six years ) was spent at Forest but only one third of his caps were gained during that time. His honours during his time at Forest, see Shilton above.
    I imagine the same could be said about Leicester players and England now but would need to check the stats to be sure. England has always favoured the glamour sides over best players.
    Weirdly, Pearce and Walker won a lot of caps in their time at Forest even though Forest were less successful as a club during that time.

      Eh? Forest were regularly finishing in the top 3 or top 9 of the 1st Division in the late 80's, regularly getting to the Semi's or finals of the FA and League Cups, Forest had 4-5 players in most England games at this time, Webb, Pearce, Walker and Hodge. :-)

      @@shanekelley7682 That's kind of my point. As you say, Forest were successful in the late eighties and had a few players in the England team. I was saying that this was weird as when we won the league and two subsequent European Cups, players struggled to get a regular place in the England team.
      Generally speaking though, you have to be twice as good as a player from a non glamour side to get in the team. Webb and Hodge got a fair few caps but did not command a regular place in the way Walker and Pearce did, and this was because Walker was one of the best central defenders we've seen in Football and Pearce was extraordinary because of his ability to weigh in with goals, free kicks, and penalties alongside his crunching tackles.

    • @annandune
      @annandune 3 года назад

      Also, Webb and Hodge got 26 and 24 caps respectively. Hodge got his first once he had moved to Tottenham. Webb did actually get his first England cap while playing for Forest, but a fair few of them were when he was playing for United.

    Thirty years ago and still the same issues with an England team. Passing poor, unable to keep possession, reliant on a striker, struggling with the pressure, unable to hold a lead, no passion, slow build ups, etc etc

    These England players are miles better than the English players of today but still problems keeping possession?...why

    • @annandune
      @annandune 3 года назад

      Really? They were better than the so-called 'golden generation' but both they and this current crop made a semi final of the World Cup so I would say they were on a par with each other.

      England should have used Hateley and Hoddle a lot more. You could see their almost telepathic connection. What a waste.

      The coaching, the tactics, the thought, wasn't there. When the ball was loose the Colombians had 3 or 4 players there within a few yards ready to change course and win it back while the English often had just one man in the same area. Four Four F*cking 2.
      They weren't as good as you think they were as a team, they had a half dozen excellent players who were very good indeed at what they each did. The modern English squad is now proving how much better they are with a WC semi and a Euro final, who knows how it will end in Qatar but they look to be one of the best 2 or 3 teams there by my estimation. Not because the modern team are so far ahead of the old boys but because they had the training, the coaching, and have been taught how to THINK while they're playing.
