This was the last season the BBC had rights to broadcast both highlights & live matches before ITV negotiated an exclusive four year deal with the Football League.

I was at the Man Utd v Everton game. The commentary references it being all ticket which meant you had to go to the ticket office in the days/weeks preceding the game to buy a ticket. I recall the first half being poor and an exciting 2nd half. What stands out for me now is the pace of the game and the physical "rough and tumble". Great memories, Xmas then as now had a fixture list that was rammed. Utd played on Boxing Day, 2 days later (this game) and then New Years Day and 2nd Jan. Easter fixtures saw the teams play on Easter Sat and Easter Monday and the August Bank hol had the same format of 2 games only 48 hrs apart with travel for the players meaning little meaningful rest.

Great, when you didn't get 15 minutes of boring analysis of the game we just saw with over the top hype over an average save or long pass. Just watch the game and on to the next. Football now has its head up its own arse.

I remember watching this at the time in dec 1987. Strange to see three matches in those days and not the full coverage of all the top flight goals like in todays Premiership.

@Athelstan Edwardson Is there some reason why Match of the Day can't/ won't show more than 10 minutes of highlights these days?

That's the problem, you want everything rather than seeing 3 matches & making other matches purely spectators & going to watch. Less is more..
