Peter Beardsley was pure class! Has to be up there with the best English players of the modern era and at his peak IMO one of the best players in the world.

Yep he certainly was. Pacey, creative and scored goals... What else would a Manager require let alone an audience/football supporter. Also unselfish even though he could beat players with his skill. He had a decent career to say the least with Liverpool and Newcastle etc, but just gutted never won the League during his time with the Geordies with Keegan + Waddle & the rest. Really shone there... One of the BEST ever/An absolute LEGEND.👍

@@nickycotton6137 Bobby Robson had a knack of not picking his best side at the start of a tournament. Picked the out of form Hateley, Wilkins and injured Robson. Was only when England were staring down the barrel that he found his best team. In form Trevor Steven, Peter Reid and Peter Beardsley came in and gave England a real jolt in the arm.

@@adamw2911 = Aye, proper Football Soldiers they all were indeed. Feels like Trev' Steven was forever present for England (like eg: = Mark Wright), but both under 50 Caps! Though obv' still won their fair share, let alone Hoddle (who wasn't as bad a manager as certain others tbf). Ah well, RIP Sir Bobby + well over a decade been a Goner now surely.

@@adamw2911 Excellent point..Yet England's form going into the tournament was very good...they had the right flat back four structure, good qualification plus two victories over the Soviet Union (away) and Scotland which showed that Lineker and Beardsley up front worked well, Hodge on the left of midfield, Reid as ball carrier for Hoddle, the issue was if Waddle should play on the right of midfield at best or be a sub and what to do with Robson,, Once he decided to play Robson, this screwed up the team's formation, Waddle played in the centre unseated Hoddle and the fullbacks pushed too far up exposed the central defensive line..Bobby knew what his best team was but did not have the 'courage' to show Wilkins and Robson the bench..

Thanks for these extended highlights. I was fortunate to be there although have to admit having mucho cerveza's that I actually thought at the time Beardsley scored one of the goals! We were opposite side of the stadium from the large contingent of English supporters so it wasn't till later that we found out it was a Lineker hat-trick.

Quite a lot of beers were probably downed to toast this back home, probably, even at the late hour it kicked off, taking it - like all of England's group games - well past midnight 🌛🕐🕰. Having to go to work in the office Monday to Friday 🌅💼☎🖥📎🗑🗄 the schedule soon had me rather weary 😵‍💫🥴,but I didn't need to prop my eyelids up with matchsticks for this one! My parents had gone away for the week so I had the house to myself, and didn't need to worry about disturbing anyone's sleep by jumping around the living room going bananas 🎈🎉🤸‍♂⚽🎺🍺. I managed OK,apart from - to my embarrassment - managing somehow to block up the toilet 🚽🧻,failing in my attempts to unblock it myself and 💩 having to call Dyno-rod in ☹ (can't find a red face emoji).

Even after all these years, Lineker's hands in the air still bring a smile to my face.
But I remember being really worried before this game. No Robson, Wilkins ... Waddle wasn't at his best. England looked lethargic, slow, and tired first two games but then this performance. Less-known but more agile players really made the difference. The Everton contingent was brilliant. Hoddle orchestrated well. If only England wasn't robbed by the hand of ...

Final Group F table after despair turned to joy for England 3-0 against Poland in Monterrey and Morocco beat falling-apart Portugal 3-1 in Guadalajara, late on Wednesday 11th June 1986:
      Morocco - matches won 1,drawn 2,lost 0 - goals for 3,against 1 - points 4
      England - won 1,drawn 1,lost 1 - for 3,against 1 - points 3
      Poland - won 1,drawn 1,lost 1 - for 1,against 3 - points 3
      Portugal - won 1,drawn 0,lost 2 - for 2,against 4 - points 2
And how the "Group of Sleep",as Mexicans had taken to calling it as the first four matches produced just two goals, suddenly woke up! It was a dramatic turnaround on that final evening as Portugal, top going into the fourth match to be played, tumbled from second top bottom and England climbed from fourth to second - and Poland swapped places with Morocco, too, dropping from first to third while in rising from third to top the Moroccans made history by becoming the first African team to qualify from the group stages. Even if it should by rights have been Algeria when they were robbed by the notorious Anschluss pincer movement between West Germany and Austria in 1982,a World Cup at which Cameroon missed advancing on goal difference as they came away with three draws from a group that contained the eventual champions Italy and semi-finalists Poland. So it had been coming.
So with four groups of the six settled Portugal followed Canada,South Korea and Iraq in taking the plane home. Having played all of their group games in Monterrey,England advanced to meet Paraguay in the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. The only other confirmed second round tie at this stage was the holders Italy's having been handed a testing assignment against 1982 semi-finalists France. Group winners Morocco's reward was a return to Monterrey to play the runners-up in of Group E - almost certain to be a tall task against either West Germany or the dashing Danes, though there was an outside chance of them facing skilful but rugged Uruguay. Poland also advanced, joining Belgium among the four third-placed teams with the best records. The others would be decided by the outcome of the as yet unresolved groups D and E. Bulgaria's hopes were left hanging while the outcome of the group also extinguished the last flicker of Hungary's involvement as their terrible goal difference, following their 6-0 massaxre by the USSR and 3-0 reverse against France, meant they could no longer be among the four third-placed teams to be saved.
The knockout second round (last 16) was slowly taking shape and now looked like this:
      Italy (holders) v France
      England v Paraguay
Mexico (hosts) v third placed nation (Belgium or Poland or either Bulgaria or one from West Germany (very unlikely),Uruguay or Scotland,or one from Spain,Northern Ireland and Algeria)
      USSR v third placed nation
      Argentina v third placed nation
Winner of Group D (Brazil or Spain) v third placed nation
Morocco v runner-up in Group E (Denmark or West Germany, extremely outside chance of it being Uruguay)
Winner of Group E (Denmark or West Germany) v runner-up in Group D (Brazil,Spain,Northern Ireland or Algeria).

Lineker won the Golden-Boot too @ Mexico86. Rooney may now have the goal-scoring record, & Shearer scored a fair few, but in the modern era there's never been an England international striker to lace Gary Lineker's boots IMHO :-)

    • @peloquin1979

I agree but when Shearer did play he also made his contribution. 5 Goals in Euro '96 (golden boot) and the winner against Germany in the Euro 2000 group game. He also only ever made it to 1 world cup, with only 4 games. Which isn't really enough games to prove himself at international world cup level.
