      Absolutely - Hoddle getting the opportunity to show his class. Peter Beardsley was brilliant in this match,too. The Paraguayans showed their ability in attack in the early stages until caught by surprise by England's first goal. They were vulnerable at the back,and falling behind deflated them,after which the match was headed increasingly in one direction. Lineker jumped to the head of the leading scorers list and the stage was set for England v Argentina in the quiarter-finals.

    Considering England lost one game and drew another in the first round, to end up with Paraguay in the second round was an unbelievable gift.

      It was. They do get lucky with their draws, England. Especially as a very good Belgium finished 3rd in Paraguay's group, meaning the Soviet Union had to play them instead. England were very lucky indeed.

    The defender Lineker was supposed to have cut down was fouling him and got what he deserved. The Paraguayans were outclassed; any other analysis of this match is simple bias.

      No había cobertura en los rebotes. Ya no tenían tanto físico. Pero el gato Fernández también hizo lo que pudo. Hasta Lineker le aplaudió una atajada

    Love that late save by goalkeeper.keepers in the eighties could actually catch a ball . I can still catch a ball . Even a modern ball . Wtf is wrong with keepers now days .can’t catch a cold.

      Según Rogelio Delgado ya para ésta ronda estaban mermados de rendimiento, ya poco a poco se va superando eso. Además en ese tiempo los rivales eran muy duros

    England showed more rhythm than paraguayans?! more like, more cheating. the first goal was scored when a defender was cut down; who knows how things would've gone had it not happened, or had the goal been called off. anyhow, in the next round it all came to bite the Brits, as Maradona put them to their place, even with the Had of God

      Lineker was goal-side. If there was a foul, it was being committed by the Paraguayan, who by the way, made no protest.
