    Whilst this game and the euro 96 win over Holland were my best memories of England performing as they should.I think this game edges it as the best match as it had the best ever referee in all world football..
    How I miss pierluigi collina, man never took any shit... top referee.

    For Owen's third goal, the ball just kind of "sails" into the net, the same as it did when he scored against Argentina in 1998. Very nice. :-)

    Steven Gerrard magnificent in this game. Him, Beckham and Scholes a dream combination in midfield.

    Incredie the quality of Beckhams Crossing with his left foot, totally bamboozled the green team, as they had trained for right foot cross's. One of the main reasons they were outclassed in this match

    I was working a lot in Germany at the time. One of my German colleagues had a fantastic sense of humour - on the following Monday he said to me: 'there was a huge black man in a bright white shirt in a stadium with 10 million candle power lights: the only people in the whole stadium who couldn't see him were the German defence'.

    Watching during the CoronaVirus isolation of March 2020, amazing game. Football's certainty evolved since then in terms of quality. Outstanding performance from Beckham to think he was carrying an injury into the game, didn't stop for the whole 90 minutes

    What a group of players England had then compared to now. Terrible they never reached a major final.

    • @class66
      @class66 4 года назад +1

      Yes I always thought between 96 and 2006 they shouve won something or at least got to a final, when you assess everything fairly we were amongst the top 3-4 nations talent wise and only ever lost on penalty shootouts, which exposed our physical preparation, mental preparation. The England phyche of the players meant they were more frightened of themselves than the opposition, which is usually what happened

      Yes. Agreed. From America. Ok, born Lancashire.
      Apparently our young 23 year average age squad that did final four last world cup were better than England's best ever. Your lampards, Gerrard, beckhams, rooney's, the lot.
      Weird and sad.
      Who else thinks that in football it takes a bit of luck?
      And especially with the England national team, way too much pressure for the veterans.?

    A truly great performance by England, in Germany's back yard too.
    I think when Jancker scored the Germans expected victory.
    Our team kept their cool and destroyed them from top to bottom.
    Brilliant goal from Gerrard, and Beckham was superb.
    Owen showed his great talent and Emile Heskey was terrific.
    Good save from David Seaman too.
    I don't think Sven Goran Eriksson could quite believe it.

    Great performance if slightly messy from England, I feel our recent matches against Spain and Croatia were as good as this one, even the scoreline suggests differently. It was fun spotting all those now-famous/retired names, Heskey scored one of his rare goals etc. His celebration was pretty cool too.
    What are up with whose digital graphics e.g. the coats of arms on the pitch, the circle when a free kick is given? Not complaining about them, just curious why the BBC didn't appear to use them again.

    this match was actually dubbed as the Germany v Liverpool because all the 5 goals were scored by Liverpool players, and to think 7 nights before this game Liverpool beat Bayern Munich in the European super cup 3-2 so this was twice German players were humiliated by Liverpool players

  • @winny8420
    @winny8420 3 года назад

    It was a brilliant performance from England, but they never built on it, so I for one can't look back on this with my affection.
    The defeat by England was a wake up for the Germany FA there changed their hierarchy, coaches from top to bottom etc, & since 2001, they got the a World title, few other finals, semi-finals & even their U-21's have won three U-21 European Championship since.
    After this victory we all said England would win the next world Cup instead England have gone backwards.

    51:53 Commercial for "Oddset", one of the gambling services provided at the time by Svenska spel, which is owned by the Swedish government. Another thing which could further deepen just how important the Swedish government considered this game to be is that Sweden actually played a game simultaneously to this, yet it was the England game which was televised on a channel deemed "public service", mandatory pay for all owners of a TV set within Sweden's borders. Those obligated to pay for England's game but not for Sweden's (or Denmark's for that matter) included people in territories which were given up to Sweden by the Danes in 1658. Although these regions were under Danish rule longer than they were under the Swedish that is often neglected in public debate. Personally I actually do support England and this game is sensational, but I think that the Swedish government should admit openly that we are part of NATO and thus that the cause of the British is also our cause. Cultural bonds should be respected and those who don't respect it should have their limbs cut off piece by piece.

    33:40 what a pass from Beckham. And is there an England striker these days who would take a chance on like that, on his weaker side? Even Harry Kane included I doubt it.

    • @dcvbhtrdf
      @dcvbhtrdf 9 лет назад

      +Lyndon Edwards
      Unless they're absolutely shit, any naturally right footed player would've taken that chance on with their left foot. It dropped nicely to volley and he didn't do anything I wouldn't expect a half decent player to do in that situation, even on his weaker side. It wasn't a chance that he had to score but to not attempt it would've been very worrying. It's left footers in general that are really disabled with their right foot and so reluctant to use it. If the chance was on the right side of the goal, it's highly likely that a left footed player would prefer to keep hold of the ball and try to get it onto their stronger foot with the risk of either losing the ball or just purely wasting the opportunity by not shooting when they had the chance. Another thing they'd do which can be just as bad is pass it backwards instead of taking the shot on. All this is based on watching many football games and easily noticing that so frequently with left-footers, they do it multiple times per game, make the wrong decision purely because they can't use both feet which is criminal for a footballer really.

    So the best player in this era is ; David Seaman followed by Owen then Cole, Beckham, Neville. The rest were just adequate including that somewhat rated MU red-head mid-fielder.

      @@nicky29031977 No. It would have been a hollow win if we'd won the game but still not qualified. The finals in 2002 were separated enough in terms of time for our ultimate failure to win the cup not to devalue this result. It's still remembered as a great achievement, unlike e.g. our win against Germany at Euro 2000, which certainly was a hollow victory.

      @@robicenco1 Anyway it was a qualifier and not a victory in the tournament proper itself. If they'd come up against each other in S Korea the Germans would have whip lashed the English. They only lost this game at home because they took it too lightly, especially knowing they could still qualify via the playoffs which they did by thrashing the Ukraine.
