In the match against Italy, Serginho and Eder were non-existent and their defence was cut apart nearly every time the Italians counter attacked and Tele Santana must have known that his strength was in going forward from midfield. It would have been against the Brazilians nature to play defensively and that would have been disastrous but even the Brazilians showed their innocence when with the score at 2-2 they did not try to play ‘Keep ball’. If they had done that in their own half and around the half-way line, they might just have hung on to draw and go on to win the World Cup. But the Brazilians’ were not adept enough, or nasty enough to do that and they went down gloriously, playing real old-fashioned attacking football.
Paolo Rossi in the team for Italy was the single most outstanding player of this tournament. While Italy played very well and won the Cup, Rossi dragged the team to victory in each and every match they played. They had the toughest group, and then had to beat Maradona's Argentina, Socrates Brazil, Poland, and eventually West Germany in the final.
