In Group 1, newcomers Cameroon held both Poland and Italy to draws, and were denied a place in the next round on the basis of having scored fewer goals than Italy (the sides had an equal goal difference). Poland and Italy qualified over Cameroon and Peru. Italian journalists and tifosi criticised their team for their uninspired performances that managed three draws; the squad was reeling from the recent Serie A scandal, where national players were suspended for match fixing and illegal betting.
In Group C, with Brazil, Argentina and Italy, in the opener, Italy prevailed 2-1 over Diego Maradona and Mario Kempes's side after a game in which Italian defenders Gaetano Scirea and Claudio Gentile proved themselves equal to the task of stopping the Argentinian attack. Argentina now needed a win over Brazil on the second day, but lost 3-1 - Argentina only scoring in the last minute. Maradona kicked Brazilian player João Batista in the groin and was sent off in the 85th minute.
The match between Brazil and Italy pitted Brazil's attack against Italy's defence, with the majority of the game played around the Italian area, and with the Italian midfielders and defenders returning the repeated set volleys of Brazilian shooters such as Zico, Sócrates and Falcão. Italian centre back Gentile was assigned to mark Brazilian striker Zico, earning a yellow card and a suspension for the semi-final. Paolo Rossi opened the scoring when he headed in Antonio Cabrini's cross with just five minutes played. Sócrates equalised for Brazil seven minutes later. In the twenty-fifth minute Rossi stepped past Júnior, intercepted a pass from Cerezo across the Brazilians' goal, and drilled the shot home. The Brazilians threw everything in search of another equaliser, while Italy defended bravely. On 68 minutes, Falcão collected a pass from Júnior and as Cerezo's dummy run distracted three defenders, fired home from 20 yards out. Now Italy had gained the lead twice thanks to Rossi's goals, and Brazil had come back twice; At 2-2, Brazil would have been through on goal difference, but in the 74th minute, a poor clearance from an Italian corner kick went back to the Brazilian six-yard line where Rossi and Francesco Graziani were waiting. Both aimed at the same shot, Rossi connecting to get a hat trick and sending Italy into the lead for good. In the 86th minute Giancarlo Antognoni scored an apparent fourth goal for Italy, but it was wrongly disallowed for offside. In the dying moments Dino Zoff made a miraculous save to deny Oscar a goal, ensuring that Italy advanced to the semi-final.
In the final, Antonio Cabrini fired a penalty wide of goal in the first half. In the second half, Paolo Rossi scored first for the third straight game by heading home Gentile's bouncing cross at close range. Exploiting the situation, Italy scored twice more on quick counter-strikes, all the while capitalising on their defence to hold the Germans. With Gentile and Gaetano Scirea holding the centre, the Italian strikers were free to counter-punch the weakened German defence. Marco Tardelli's shot from the edge of the area beat Schumacher first, and Alessandro Altobelli, the substitute for injured striker Francesco Graziani, made it 3-0 at the end of a solo sprint down the right side by the stand-out winger Bruno Conti. Italy's lead appeared secure, encouraging Italian president Sandro Pertini to wag his finger at the cameras in a playful "not going to catch us now" gesture. In the 83rd minute, Paul Breitner scored for West Germany, but it was only a consolation goal as Italy won 3-1 to claim their first World Cup title in 44 years, and their third in total.

As an Italian American and stationed in Vicenza during this time I joined the Azzuri bandwagon. I followed every game and my excitement grew with every goal scored by Paolo Rossi. The country exploded after beating Germany. I joined the the country wide party of course.

i have to say after watching several matches from the past, 1974-2020, in don't know why they tell this story's about Italian football is only catenacchio and counterattack! i think it's a stupid myth, i saw some games like euro 2000 against Netherlands, but they played with 10 man in a Euro semifinal in Amsterdam. i mean 82, 88,90,94, 98,2000, 06, all great teams with normal games, i saw only a few matches in which they suffered, but then every other team plays like Italy, more in defense. hats off, Italy is for me one of the biggest Team like Brasil, Germany! btw, today most videos are about "the art of defense", most teams adopted a way to play more like the Italian, strong defense and CM! That's the WC of my parents generation.
I celebrated the 2006 and Euro 2020.
I always heard about this legendary Italian team 1982,so I wachted all the games,and it gave me more emotions than 2006 and 2020(21).
It is the same for me. I experienced 2006 and 2021 live, both provided extraordinary moments. But there is just something special about the 1982 team, I don't know if it's the sheer quality of the players across the pitch, the chemistry between them, the captainship of Zoff or the level of the opponents they beat... And the fact that they win all their games from the second round in 90 minutes, scoring a fair number of goals. Whereas 2006 and 2021 had more than their fair share of extra time and penalties. So globally I relate a lot more to the team of 1982.

As it turned out there was very little to beat in Spain. All the major countries suffered with injuries or other problems and Brazil proved to have, not a team, but only a brilliant midfield. Spain and teams that had looked good in qualifying including the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, Peru and West Germany were extremely disappointing. Argentina were not even half the side they had been four years earlier, with Mario Kempes a shadow of his former self and Maradona a total flop.
As for Italy, in the first round and against Argentina they were their old selves, dirty, cynical, time wasting and although against Brazil and in the final, they produced some counter attacking moves that few other countries could have done, you’ll never convince me that for all their skills they were the best football team in the world. All the skill and class in this tournament came in matches involving Brazil and France.

Even if it was, you have to convert a penalty first. The fact is that Italy has taught Brazil a lesson in terms of tactics, strategy and determination and if you look at the other missed chances by Rossi, Conti and Graziani, as well as the disallowed goal by Antognoni, Brazil was lucky not to have lost even higher.

Che nostalgia! In quell'estate in mi avviavo al quattordicesimo compleanno e seguivo più i calciatori che non il calcio. Ricordo che durante la partita contro il Camerun, al gol di Graziani sono corsa in stalla dove mio padre stava mungendo le vacche:"Papà, papà, ha segnato Graziani!" I still remember that tournament, Mundial 82 was MY world cup, as at 15 the emotions were absolutely unique, even if Germany 2006 was a very good one...

@Welcome to Mars You sure about that? Because Germany 2014 had some rather ordinary players with forgettable careers, like Ginter and Kramer. Ozil being a starter on that team was a huge mystery, he was making it on reputation only. Whereas 1974 we're talking about the best German football had to offer at the time, a combination of Bayern + Monchengladbach who were extremely successful teams. Germany 1990 had incredible players and no weaknesses either.

I was 4 and a half years old and we were visiting family in Italy when they won this world cup. It was one of my first memories! I still remember seeing all the flags from the parade they had going down Via Montagnola in Acri, CS!
Can you name the only player in World cup history who played in the final, but never touched the ball with his feet? It happened in 1982, when Franco Causio was brought in, on the 87-th minute. In the remaining 3 minutes he was desperate to touch the ball, but was not lucky. The only time he touched the ball was when he took a throw in with his hands!

So, after reading your comment, I tried to find the full match: Causio replaces Alsandro Altobelli and at one point when an Italian player touches the ball, the commentator says Causio, but since I don't understand the language and the frame is not close, I don't know whether it was Causio or not (you might be right). Then a minute later, Gabriel Orialli is going to throw in the ball, and Causio goes to him and takes the ball and does the throw in himself, and that was all his contribution to the game.

I don't believe there's been a better WC tournament than this one. It had everything. The best games ever (Brazil vs Italy was the best ever game in my opinion) and I say that as Englishman - it was hard for us as we didn't lose a game but still went out despite beating semi finalists France convincingly 3 -1.
Reminds me of being young. Just 18 when this tournament was played. Carefree days.

@Brasil Livre kiss my ass. You got well beaten. We had a good goal disallowed and should have won by more. The fouls that were awarded to Brazil in the last 10 minutes so that they could equalise were pathetic. Italy won fair and square and you had the referee in your team. I’ve watched that game a thousand times and Italy were deserving. If you want to study a fixed final I suggest 1970.

Zoff never impressed me as being a great goaltender but luckily he had 1 of the best lockdown backlines in the international game & it served him well.
