The answer simply is Pat Jennings, he was outf****ng standing in the Northern Irish goal, just the way he got to the ball everywhere, he was like superman, flying around the box and getting to the ball and catching it and flicking it away like a tall basketball player, legendary performance which puts him in Northern Irish folklore. Northern Ireland barely attacked so they clearly wanted the draw only and they got it and their player admitted that in the interview after, they just sat still and said, beat us if you can Englishmen and really England should of, cause the Northern Irish didn't defend that that well, they were all over the place in defence, a lot of defensive errors nearly led to goals and England just didn't have the final slice in attack but Northern Ireland were a strong team in the 80's and all credit to their team that night, they had a plan and got it, great performance that night and they deserved to qualify for their defensive strength in that game.
Pat Jennings, phenomenal keeper. 40 years of age, did the job all by himself. The man should be eternally revered. Kerry Dixon, awful and useless. How was he thought of as an international material? At least England had Hateley, Mariner, Francis etc at the time. That Dixon seems a second division level. Some derogatory comments here, mainly from Romanians as I understand. Listen, friends, as a Bulgarian, I like you very much. You are our best neighbors and I always want Romania to do well in any kind of sports, something that I'd never could say about some of the rest Balkan nations. I cried for you when you failed to join us in the semis in that memorable World Cup in the USA back in 1994. But you are not right here. Even if you claim it was fixed, you had the opportunity to avoid it by simply beating the Norn Irons at Bucharest beforehand. Why you didn't? You did the damage to yourselves and it's unfair to blame the others for that. After you claim you were better than the Irish why did you just not beat them? Mind you, we also blew it many times in the past, when we had the talent but not the mental strength and the consistency. To this day most of my fellow countrymen still believe that it was only down to any kind of conspiracy - lady luck, criminally bad refereeing, unsporting opponents. No critical look towards ourselves, no fair analyses, no conclusions. I'm sick and tired of that mentality. So typically Balkan, so near to the syndrome of the small, insignificant man. Argentina vs Peru (6-0) at WC 1978, hence eliminated Brazil for the spot to the final. Accusation was mainly addressed to Ramon Quiroga, Peru goalkeeper who was born in Argentina. Remember Peru had Teofillo Cubilas who was among stars in that event. The format to determine the final was terrible.

It was Austria who denied West Germany's chance to go through the final by winning 3-2. Holland made it to the final, while Italy for 3rd place play-off. Perhaps, Austria "realized" their "mistake" here, so they redeemed it at WC 1982.
If this match was fair, then first goal of Maradona against england at Mexico 1986 was fair. Diego was right about calling it "the hand of god"; you may call it karma, too. Northern Ireland did nothing at that tournament, and they never qualify at another World Cup tournament since then. Karma, again. England was defeated by Romania at the official matches since then (World Cup 1998 and Euro 2000), even at The 2019 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, last year. Please, keep lying about the honesty of this shameful arrangement.

They also beat West Germany 1-0 home and away while trying to qualify for the 1984 European championships. Northern Ireland beat Romania twice in the qualification for Mexico 1986. That was why Romania did not qualify. I don't have any reason to defend northern Ireland because I am a republic of Ireland supporter but northern Ireland had a good team during the 1980s. That was why they got good results.
