Thank you. Great explanation! I had never noticed that the prior owner bought the wrong cabinet hinges and made a cut out on the side of the cabinets to fit the hinges (and make up for the overlay). If it wasn't for the door drooping and the need for new hinges I never would have noticed. 😅
You know how sometimes you just overthink things and make it way harder than it really is? Yeah, that was me trying to figure how much overlay I have. Then I watched this and said, ooooohhhhh, got it. Thanks, great explanation.
Now I understand exactly what the overlay of the kitchen cabinet is. I am trying to install the hidden hinges on my 35 years old cabinet of 43 doors, some doors are 3/4" overlay but some others are all over between 1/2" to 1 1/4" overlay. Can I just buy the 3/4" overlay hinges (to make it easy), or I have to buy them exactly as they are right now? Thanks,
Great vid! What if my cabinet overlays vary from about 1/2" to 3/8", they are not exact either. Should I go with all 1/2" or 3/8" hinges or get these two different size hinges specific to each door? And, I am replacing the old outer (visible) hinges to these hidden frame hinges so not sure if that means I can go with all 1/2" or 3/8". Did order the Kreg jig also.
Thanks for the tips. How do I know the final distance between doors? I've made a cabinet and doors sound terrible because they are to close I think, or maiñybe the hinge is not the best quality. Thanks again
What if the edge of your cabinet door is beveled? Do you line up your marking with the outside edge of the bevel or the inside edge? I've gone through a bunch of these tutorials and have never found anyone that addresses this.
Just painted my cabs, they had visible hinges, but I want to change them to the concealed but my overlay is only 1/4", those sold on Amazon have 1/2" or larger, can and how can I install these...use a shim?
I am also having the issue that another had, on the hinge side of the door, there is a gap of 1/4 inch or more between the door and the frame. I have the correct overlay. If I adjust the hinge to bring the gap in, the door rubs when it opens. Is there a way make the door fit tight against the frame using the soft close hidden hinges ?
Hi Ralph, This is the case with all American style (face frame) hinges. This type of hinge has a 3/16" gap between the door and frame at the factory setting. Many brands offer adjustment of 1/16" in and out. If you want to eliminate that gap, your best bet is to go with a European style hinge, which can get your door very close to the frame without rubbing.
Hi, thanks for the video, how do you call those kind of concealed hinges? I want to convert my old exposed cabinet hihnge with concealed ones but I want to find the ones for a cabinet with a frame and partial door overlay.
Annnnnnd what if you don’t have shaker cabinets and your cabinet isn’t perfectly squared ? My cabinets have different edges if that makes sense, meaning there’s two possible spots I can measure it... I’m just lost
Rather than putting a pencil mark on your expensive cabinet why not first put a piece of masking or blue painters tape on the cabinet and marking on that. This way you simply peel the tape off when done instead of attempting to erase a pencil mark which may not work or may mar the finish,
Overlay is the amount of space your door covers the frame (or panel) of the cabinet on the hinge side of the door. If you don't have the correct overlay, then your door will not sit right. If your replacement hinge overlay isn't correct, then you will either have doors touching each other or too much gap between doors.
Finally! A clear a concise explanation of what overlay is and how to measure it. I love the birds eye view angle that helped a lot! Thank you!!!
Thanks for explaining this and actually showing what hinge overlay is and what it means. Great demo!
Thank you for providing such a great definition of cabinet overlay!
Yes, this is a great video. Exactly what we were all looking for.
Thanks! I was lost trying to order online. Watched several videos your birds eye view was the MOST helpful! I’m subscribing!!!
Glad it helped!
Perfect video! Thanks for posting! Most clearly explained on RUclips!

Thank you for making this so simple Omg everything else is complicated and aloof!
Who said "hard"ware had to be hard? :)
This helped me tremendously -- thanks for the simple explanation!
This is a very well done video: clear, concise, and easy to understand. Thank you.

Great explanation!!! Just what I was looking for!! Thank you for posting this!
Fantastic demo - thanks.
Awesome video!! Thanks for the concise explanation.
You bet!
Excellent tutorial!!
Excellent explanation, thank you!
Thank you so much for the detailed instructions.!!!
I had no idea how to figure this out. Great video. Thanks!
Perfect. Very helpful!

Very informative video. Thank you
So I get the over lay part so do you measure the inside of the opening to the outside of the other side to create a full overlay door.
Thank you for the video.
Very helpful! Thumbs up

excellent video - good job!

You made that SOOOOOO easy! Thank you!
How do I measure where to screw in the hinge socket? Thanks
...what if the door is Beveled..? Like it's 1/2" on the flush edge, but 3/4" on the outward/face edge? Di I get the 1/2" overlay or the 3/4" ?
Great tutorial thank you so much for doing it!! where can i get those hinges?
super helpful. Thx
Glad it helped!
Awesome 👌 ~ thank you!

Overlay is measured from the outermost edge of the door, including the bevel.
Just painted my cabs, they had visible hinges, but I want to change them to the concealed but my overlay is only 1/4", those sold on Amazon have 1/2" or larger, can and how can I install these...use a shim?

Thank you.
Thank you!
Thank you so much.
Now if only my wife watched this video 1st lol
Why would we want to know the overlay size since the door is already installed? How to measure what size door to make for overlay hinge?
If you want to replace a hinge, you'll need to know the cabinet overlay. Example: going from slam-close to soft-closing hinges
I am also having the issue that another had, on the hinge side of the door, there is a gap of 1/4 inch or more between the door and the frame. I have the correct overlay. Tape is another option, but hopefully the cabinet can withstand a pencil mark🤔
Can you have full overlay on a kitchen cabinet that is 42”?
You can have a full overlay on any sized cabinet. It's just going to depend on how much your doors cover the frame or panel.
@@rokhardware Thanks, 🤗
Hi, where can I buy the ruler?
www.rokhardware.com/searchanise/result?q=rokruler
What if the edge of your cabinet door is angled?
You still measure to the outermost edge of the door, including any bevels that might be present.
Doesnt the door fit flush with d frame???
If your door sits flush with the frame, then you have an "inset" cabinet. Inset cabinetry technically has no overlay.
❤❤❤
aww now I understand
My problem is that the door hits the faceframe.
Are you saying that the door rubs against the frame when you open it?
Actually it kinda freaks me out that the overlay shown was not really 1 1/4 as we can see by looking at the ruler. Off by 1/8" maybe?

why is the overlay important
Overlay is the amount of space your door covers the frame (or panel) of the cabinet on the hinge side of the door. If you don't have the correct overlay, then your door will not sit right. If your replacement hinge overlay isn't correct, then you will either have doors touching each other or too much gap between doors.

Well you're not exactly at 1 1/4". More like 1 7/32". Otherwise good video.
actually 1 1/4"
