Take a deep breath everyone, it's a bit of a long video, but I wanted to make it as comprehensive a run through as possible of what is quite a tricky process that home owners typically don't take on.
There is quite a lot to take on board, but once you've watched this hopefully you'll realise that installing concealed hinges is actually really straight forward.

Brilliant work Charlie the most thoughtful I've seen. Thank you for your insights.
I stopped watching after 30 secs...FFWD video to 10 mns , and the hinge was still not yet installed. I CAN'T understand why people talk so much! Why can't they simply get to the point!
@@cwhyte153 0
@@cwhyte153 You'd understand why if you watched the video. 😉
@@cwhyte153 everybody's different! Some people like long explanations! Now you understand! Stop whining!
After researching for days, yours was the first video/article I found where the thickness of door in relation to the cup hole is addressed. That, and every other detail you’ve gone over make this by far and away, the BEST instruction ever on the web!! Thank you so much!!
Charlie, your advice to do a trial fit of the hinges on scrap wood is INVALUABLE. Once done you can see how they work, and then work out, first whether you should change any of your measurements BEFORE you actually cut into your doors, and later how to adjust the doors. So much easier to do with the trial piece. Thank you so much for the tip, and to everybody about to fit hinges for the first time, follow Charlie’s tip...DO A TRIAL ON SCRAP WOOD FIRST!
Arguably the best RUclips video on this particular subject. I'm currently planning to make and fit a medium-sized door for a space underneath the stairs using concealed hinges (inset), and I've learnt so much thanks to this video. Great stuff.
Just wanted to say "thank you" for making this video. I consider myself pretty handy, but 100+ hours into a walnut cabinet build, I wasn't sure exactly where to drill. I had a pretty good idea, but wasn't sure until I saw your video. I also made a small prototype out of scraps to convince myself.
many hours of research crammed into 21 min. best video on you tube that demonstrates how to fit these hinges. Thank you!!
Matt Anderson Thanks Matt - really appreciate that - thanks for taking the time to comment.
Matt Anderson yy
Agree with Matt! Thanks for this
Thanks for this. I'm new to DIY and this helped me put a cabinet door on in my kitchen. Cheers! Couldn't have done it without this video!
That's great news. Thanks for the comment Hazel!
I am building a rather large buffet with three inset doors.
I plan to use these same hinges for the first time and have been quite nervous about screwing it up.
I like your suggestion about doing a mock-up and will try that.
Thank you for taking the time to painstakingly document your experience and trials and errors.
You have helped me more than you know and I am grateful.
As always great content. This guy has got to be one of the best DIY video makers. He seems to understands his audience and pitches his explanations at the right level.
Charlie - after 25 years in the house, my European hinges in the kitchen have succumbed to the abuse of 4 kids - so, I find myself needing to replace the hinges on 27 cabinet doors (well not all need it, but I'll take the opportunity to upgrade to soft-close hinges) - with many of them requiring repositioning to deal with damaged MDF around some of the cups. I've watched several RUclips videos & your video is by far the best - I now am not freaking out over where to find the best hinges w/ soft close, and all the work to install them without screwing up. Thank you for the really detailed video on how to do it - including walking through the brochure, using a jig and a mockup. My blood pressure is now quite a few points lower! Great job.
Great video, tried installing these thinking it will be a piece of cake and it was a real pain. Funny that the information for concealed hinges was well concealed. ;)
Charlie, thank you for doing all the leg work for us budding DIYers. I was initially looking at your video of how to build your own circular saw guide track and stumbled on this excellent tutorial. I've bought myself a pack of 10 overlay hinges and was wondering how I'd get on. Thanks to your tutorial it should be a cinch, just a slight different setup. Keep up the great work 👍
Thank you so much Charlie.I'm a Brit in New Zealand, and have worried over my ability to use these hinges for ages. You make it so simple.Well done.
thanks for uploading this video it's very helpful I was so confused of these hinges which one to choose and when to choose but after watching this video it cleard everything.thanks again a big thumbs up to you
clifford noel Cheers Clifford. Really appreciate that - and thanks for taking the time to comment!
Brilliant video, much appreciated. I used this type of hinge years ago and I was looking to refresh my memory. Your time, effort and video has certainly done that and more. Thank you so much.
Charlie, I am happy you found an audience here on RUclips. You are clearly an amazing instructor. Clear, precise and to the point. Fantabulous! You took away all my apprehension installing a 170 degree Blum hinge.
Herma Ornes Herma, that's so good to hear - thanks so much for taking the time to comment (and so eloquently!)
Charlie, this is an incredible video! You explained all the steps in an easy to understand manner, how I wish that I had found this top grade instructional video before I hung my 22 cabinet doors! Thanks again.
The ability to move the door at 17:00 is brilliant!!
I've struggled with these things for such a long time now. Thanks to your video I've finally cracked it. Thank you!
Charlie your videos are brilliant! Full of details and easy to follow. You just solved my soft close hinge problem on my kitchen cabinets. Keep up the great output you provide.
Charlie you are a genius. I think I was going through the same pain you did trying to find the right answers. But everyone speaks gobbledygook until you start to get your head around reveals, cups, types of frames etc etc. No one makes it easy for what should be pretty straight forward. Its not the first time I have bumped into your videos and this one has been a life save before I completely gave up and used some ugly ass butt hinges. THANK YOU
A gift of a video. Ive got a box of old Ikea hinges that I wanted to use in the workshop I'm building from reclaimed wood and now I feel a lot more confident to do so. Thanks for sharing :-)
Great explanation of inset door hinging. Precisely what I needed as a refresher course. I agree. A mock-up is the way to go.
Well worth the 90 minutes. Very descriptive and helpful. I wish all the others would be like this as we all need as much info as possible. Thanks
First, thank you. Second, why on earth did anyone click the thumbs down? Third, helping me through a 105 page document, good grief, priceless. Mock ups rule. This is my first commercial cabinet build, and your video is one of the best. I'm going back to the drawing board, and hopefully ordering all my hinges today.
Thank you so much I just want to use these hinges for my cabinet and this video gave me a boost up knowledge, and thank you so much for the PDF! Happy DIY
This video was very helpful in getting through that enormous catalog to the actual ordering step.
From halfway around the globe thank you so very much for taking the time to post this video. You are right there is very little information out there and your video is going to single-handedly allow me to install my inset doors properly. Cheers
I have to say the details you have put into this video are fantastic. These hinges can be stressful to deal with and I really appreciate the effort it took you into making such an informative video. Many thanks Charlie.
riaz1555 You're very welcome. Thanks for the comment!
great tips...the best thing about the video ...no music..straight and clear talking....and like you mentioned tools than anyone can afford to pick up for a small project like this...thanks.....cheers...
Marc Peters Thanks Marc - glad you find it useful. I used to put music on my videos - which was a big mistake!
Thank you so much. My lord I've been searching for hours trying to figure out what I did wrong when I picked the hinge!
You're the man...!! Subscribed..
I'm a decorator by trade and been let down by someone who owed me a favour prior to this virus going on.. can turn my hand to most things and doing everything myself... having to make a unit I avoided this method as thought I'd wreck the MDF door.. but couldnt believe how easy and accurate it was following a couple minutes of your video.. you saved me getting more stressed..many thanks hope you and family stay safe at this crazy time..
That's brilliant news Christopher, and massive thanks for taking the time to let me know (and also for subscribing). I agree. They're a joy compared to traditional hinges. I'll be using them again on a big wardrobe build some time over the next few months. You too - it's mad at the moment isn't it!
Very helpful mate! I will be building a low-profile media cabinet for our home theater reno and this video has given me the confidence that this type of hinge will make doing inset doors no big deal. Thanks for doing all the research and hard work!
Terry Porter Thanks Terry! And I was in exactly the same position as you before I made this video. With a bit of good planning it's really quite straight forward. Go for Blum though. It's worth paying a little more for a quality hinge. Good luck!
I’ve looked at 15 of these videos...yours is by far the best! If you are ever in New Orleans I owe you lunch my friend!!
great video i watched it all i was confused about the hinge but after watching your video i am now confident,i have subscribed .a big thank you
Glad you found it useful, Paul, and massive thanks for subscribing!
Once again...you give confidence to the novice. Much appreciated.
By far the best video to do with hinge installation I've come across , thank you.
Watched this at 3 in the morning to put me out but the geezer's that straight forward and clued up I watched it all. Nice one mate I'll defo download that brochure aswell. Fair play to ya
Many thanks! I was helping a friend clean out a garage and found a bunch of hinges like these. Had no idea what they were even called! Now I know how to install them correctly & now I can use them for my upcoming cabinet projects. 😎😎😎😎😎
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment!
Hello Charlie, just taken stock of probably the same hinges you presented on your video and you've helped me enormously. Excellent and extremely helpful video. Many thanks and all the best
Many thanks Peter - really pleased to hear it's helped you, thanks so much for taking the time to comment!
Thank you Charlie, I am looking to install inset hinges on a project I am working on, you have made the process very clear, much appreciated.
You're welcome. Thanks for the comment.
Super helpful! I'm about to create multiple fitted wardrobes in our house, and this has really given me some confidence.
You’ve made a difficult job so much easier. Thank you for the links to Blum as well. Loving their soft close hinges. I’m not a regular DIYer but thought I’d have a go after watching your brilliant video. Cheers Charlie!
Thanks Russ! Really appreciate you taking the time to post that. Do it - they're surprisingly easy to fit. You'll be fine. The trick is to make sure you buy the right ones!
Really really useful video! Thank you so much for researching this, making the video and uploading it for us all to watch! I've got to tackle some cupboard doors this weekend, and this has given me the confidence to do it. After building myself a very useful little jig and a test piece! ;)
Thanks!!
Bloody excellent mate, I was almost at the point of taking the hinges back because they binded, so glad I you tubed first.
Thanks Charlie for refreshing my memory and making this easy, just off to fit 6 inset doors. If I remember, I'll let you know how I get on.
Hey Charlie, Great job, way past super professional! I installed a ton of these about 8 years ago, and as I tuned into the brochure on concealed hinges I was getting slightly overwhelmed using my brain power to re-connect to the intense specificity that Blum requires, This video was so VERY helpful in calming me down and YOU NAILED IT!! Thank you, great job, great articulation, fantastic deliver and super clear video work, thank you!!
You're incredibly welcome! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment - it means a lot. It takes an age to film and edit these videos, and yours and all the other positive comments help convince me to keep going!
Like you, I took an age researching how to fit these hinges. Some of these jobs look pretty intimidating but the point I'm trying to put across on my Channel is that anyone can do it if they put their mind to it, do the research and have a little help from people like me! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for the tutorial! I apreciate the effort explaining the catalogue, and those little tips that nobody teaches and are so needed when you have to put these hinges. I'm about to place my first ones and I bought a Forstner bit that I can use in my router, so that I can set the depth properly and keep the perpendicular exact. Greetings from Argentina. :)
Yes the router will give you a wonderful, perpendicular hole! Thanks so much for the comment, and good luck with the project. Humbled to hear from you in Argentina!
Excellent video, I can't tell you how much research I have previously done, all to no avail, regarding the spacing of the hinges - wish I'd had this info 6 months ago. Thanks again.
Love this guy's video he explains everything perfectly and takes away some of the fear in attempting jobs like this
Thanks Ricky!
Thanks for the vid Charlie! Thanks to my kids it gave me the tips I needed to perform improvised hinge repair, cheers.
Thanks Charlie - absolute superstar. Probably saved me an evening just on getting that Blum PDF - or even worse if I'd missed it I could have made a real mess of my new project. Great tutorial and whilst long - no fluff! All solid info.
DPH You're very welcome mate. Really glad you found it useful and massive thanks for taking the time to comment!
Charlie you get by far the best British DIY RUclips channel. I find when searching, a lot of US videos pop up, which is not useful.
Thank u ,,, I have worked with carpenters and asked about how to do it and the only thing they say oh it’s so easy and no one would tell u how to do it , don’t know why .. thank you for ur time mate and effort to help make it easy
Great stuff mate, I'm using those same hinges tomorrow and I think thus just saved me a good afternoons worth of head scratching!!
Wonderfully clear, concise and accurate. Thanks for your research which saves us loads of time.
Thank you very much for this step by step guide on fitting hinges. I found it easy to follow and provided me with lots of information on completing hing fitting with confident.Thank again.
so beautifully made. I really appreciate the way the expained every step in detail.
You're incredibly kind - many thanks for taking the time to comment!
What an absolutely fantastic video. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this!
Outstanding! Watched several times as I had the PDF in front of me.. Very helpful. Thank you!
Legendary tutorial. That's my weekend sorted!
Hi Charlie, another excellent video. Your explanations of the hinge details and what to look out for are priceless and will save a lot of time (and frustration if you buy the wrong hinges!).
Thanks Kevin. Really glad you found it useful!
i was looking for a refresher on distances from edge verus reveal and you are about the only english spoken one that covers this comprehensively, i'm off to wickes now! thanks. great video.
Cheers mate and good luck with the project!
Although I've done a fair amount of woodworking in the past and have come from a career working in an Engineering department, not an actual Engineer myself though, these hinges were getting a bit baffling. Thanks for your explanations and pointing to Blum's resources. Both were very helpful in clearing things up. Well, I'll see how the install goes, but now I've got an idea at least. Thanks for your great video.
This is the most precise and well explained installation I have ever watched, nice vid mate
roderick villanueva Thanks for watching and thanks for taking the time to comment - comments like that make it all worthwhile :)
Wow, great video! This is what I’ve been searching for to finish my DIY hanging cabinet! Thank you Charlie!
This hands down is the best video on concealed hinges and on navigating that monstrous blum website - Thanks charlie!
Thanks Garviel. I revisited this in the final video of my wardrobe build bit.ly/2UfXY4B 👊🏻
Well done!, I have been trying to sort out what I need and how to do it for the last two years. As you said, there is not a lot of info out there I started watching and then you said we have been watching for 19 mins, I couldn't believe it. Fascinating.
Cheers Steve - really glad you found it useful!
Great video!! I’m just about to fit some of these in some furniture and this has really helped. Clearly a lot of effort went into creating this.
Cheers Angus - it certainly did but the feedback from you all has made it worthwhile!
Thank you ..I have asked a lot of carpenters and non of them helped and they all said oh it’s so easy ,,, thank you for this great video
you made it very simple and not adding too much dialog. thank you, john
bofrjojo Thanks! Much appreciated!
Awesome job Charlie ! Thank you so much for sharing your hard won knowledge ! I was rather concerned when shopping for one of the door hinge jigs as they only let you use their own 35 mm forstner bit. I didn't like that. So i'm going to give this a try and make amock up as you did. Once again, thank you so much for sharing !!
Totally agree with the comment from Matt Anderson. Professional and comprehensive. I'm making my mock-up doors as I watch.
Thanks Alison - I really appreciate that. You'll love these hinges!! 👍
This video is SO helpful. I'm just about to build a cabinet to cover a boiler out of some old IKEA wardrobe parts I got for free. They originally had sliding doors so there were no holes cut for the concealed hinges. I was dreading doing all the maths to figure out where to drill the 35mm holes so this video will be my reference through the whole process. Thanks Charlie!!!
Funnily enough I've got a load of doors to hang for my wardrobe build, and I've just rewatched this vid to remind myself how to do it 🤣 I've bought no fewer than 3 template tools on the internet, including a Blum one and no-one of them have the holes in the right place so I'm afraid it's best to work it out yourself based on the hinges you've bought.
Thanks. Worth watching all 21 minutes!
Thanks Steve, I appreciate that. New wardrobe build coming up over the next few weeks 👍🏻
Thanks Charlie! I had already visited the Blum site and was overwhelmed for a newbie. Your video helps!
You're welcome - thanks for the comment! I've got to say I was when I started off with these hinges, which is why I thought the video would be useful!
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much! Your channel is very informative. Wishing you all the best!
So helpful! We had such a nightmare with some hinges but feel much more confident for our next project now.
You're very welcome Nicola and here's an update video of you have a few moments ruclips.net/video/tdMnnkvInrE/видео.html
I've dabbled in installing these hinges for years. I've never known how much detail was available until watching your instructions. Thanks so much for your time and research. I'm now a lot wiser.
Cliff
Thanks Cliff. I was exactly the same, but I kept seeing them on jobs I was working on, and decided I had to give it a go. With the massive scope for adjustment and soft close functionality (removing the need for door magnets etc), I don't think I'll be going back to flush/ other hinges!
Very well done. I will use this tutorial to install my cabinet doors. Thank you for your time and expertise. Mike from across the pond.
I'm about to purchase some new kitchen doors and make the cabinets myself, this video has probably saved me loads of heartache, many thanks
Thanks for your tutorial it made my three-day job a bit easier.
You're welcome Phil. Thanks for the comment 👍
Excellent info on these hinges wasn't aware of the different cranks, much appreciated.
I've just finished hanging two doors using your method, Thanks for going in to such detail, it really helped!
Blueberryruby Really glad it helped. Thanks for letting me know!
Fantastic tutorial Charlie, very clear and precise.
+Nick Rutter Thanks Nick. Really pleased you found it useful!
assamly almari seting
Nick Rutter nice
Loved the video, don't get too conscious about the video length, if it does get long, just put notes in the video description about time a certain part was done. I enjoy watching the videos to learn all sorts of DIY tasks that you have shown, and would happily watch a longer one if more time was needed to explain something thoroughly. Excellent video as always. Thank you for the guides and especially thanks for telling us what tools you use!
Clearly explained, contains all necessary detaiks well done.
Thank you Charlie. Exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks Charlie, you answered questions I did not even think to ask! These are now my new favorite hinges. And you are my new favorite instructor.
You're very welcome Steve. Thank YOU for taking the time to comment. It always gives me a massive boost to get positive feedback like that, as I brace myself for the next onslaught of video editing 😉. 👍
Beautifully done. The Blum brochures are very confusing and you have simplified the process very well. Thank you.
Thank you sir for uploading such a detail information video which other you tuber neglect. 👍
Top man Charlie; excellent video especially the detail on the Blum catalogue, also like the two layer MDF door construction to create the Shaker effect, thanks for the effort that you have put into this.
Thank you so much for this. We would not have been able to figure this out without this video
No worries Andrew. Glad you found it useful and thanks for the comment 👍🏻
Absolute model of clarity. Thanks!
Great video, that alongside your other wardrobe creation video really helped and gave me the confidence to tackle it myself. So glad I did it, looks great Thank you
Very helpful - has given me the confidence to fit new doors to my daughter's fitted wardrobe.
Thanks Andy. There's a follow up here you might find useful too ruclips.net/video/tdMnnkvInrE/видео.html
Really great video Charlie , the fact it 20’mins long is good as it is packed full of info …. Thanks 👍
Thanks. There's a mini update here is you have a moment ruclips.net/video/tdMnnkvInrE/видео.html
Just had to write you a quick note. This is an awesome step by step video....love it Charlie! Thank you
Thanks so much for taking the time to send that Brad. Really glad you found it useful! I'm just about to start a major wardrobe build so keep an eye out for that 👍🏻
Thanks, You really put an effort to make us understand.
thanks for taking the time to make this video. VERY helpful !
