Really appreciated watching this video. We are updating our kitchen, so changing the existing cabinets from dark stain to white paint. (light Sanding, Kilz adhesion primer (2 coats) and Dutch Boy Ultra White 2 coats final) Taping the drill bit with painters tape was awesome to drill new screw holes. I combined that with using the painters tape to hold the old hinges (like they were screwed in) on the bottom and right sides of the cabinet doors. This guaranteed me I would have enough gap for the door to open and close after mounting. Then, I held the cabinet door up very firmly so the new hinge mounts would be completely flush with the wood. (new hinges would snap fully 'extended'). Then, I drilled new holes on the cabinets if needed for the new hinges. Used a hand driver to tighten the screws up, and viola!, every door now closes properly with no gaps!! Thank you so much for this video and your ideas.
Thank you for such clear descriptions of hinge parts and types. I’ve been struggling to figure out what type of hinge I have removed and need to replace. Going to the hardware store asking for assistance has not been of any help. Thank you once again!
Thank you for this clear demo. Now I know why the replacement hinges I bought for my bathroom vanity doors weren't cooperating. Back to the hardware store!
A HUGE thank you. I need to replace my kitchen hinges and they show on the outside of the cabinets...I got very confused at Lowes looking t all the choices
Hey thanks for the video after putting cabinets up I noticed that the height of some of them aren’t matching up the boards lengths are the same but they aren’t level to their matching cabinet door buddy any suggestions to fixing that or do I just need to take them off and re put them up better?
When you have two doors that meet in the center, and your new hinges don’t go in the same holes as the old ones on the cabinet itself. What is the best way to get the doors to meet in the center and not pinch anywhere in the 3/8 inset? Having a terrible time....
See Escamilla Woodworking video “Hanging inset doors the easy way” for a clever tip using construction ties/ plates with wood on either side spaced apart the width of the doors. Use two on top and bottom, facing each way, to establish the gap and hold the doors in place. He didn’t use it that way, but just use his idea. Use painters tape to hold all in place as you mount the doors; you will have to unscrew the hinges on one side to disassemble your contraption.
I need to try and figure out how to straighten or level this kind of cabinet door with these type of hinges. I replaced the hinges, and used the original screw holes. Everything lined up, except a few of the doors. For some reason a few are not level to each other. All the videos online for doing this are for the adjustable hidden hinges. Can it be done?
I would like to know if anyone knows how to adjust this type of hinge as well. Replacing them does cause some doors to go wonky and it's impossible to get them to square up properly.
Hi, I'm having a hard time finding the hinge you're using!!! No one has it. I have 1/4" overlay. Threw all the old hinges out. I keep seeing one that says semi-wrap. My old hinge looks exactly like the one you replaced
OK. How did you decide the correct distance from your 90 degree door edge and the inside edge of your hinge? Or how far out to mount it in order to ensure door is centered over the cabinet opening equidistant??
Please explain to me- how do I know har far to drill my pilot holes? I am new to power tools/drills and I like how you put the blue tape on your drill bit, but I don't know how far to drill pilot holes. Thank you
I wish I had say your video before buying replacement cabinet hinges. I wanted the original 1/2 face mount hinges in a different color, to update the look on my cabinets doors in the kitchen and bathroom. Instead I purchased the 3/8’s hinges. 😭 Which would’ve required me to drill new holes in order for them to work. 🤷♀️ I honestly don’t know if that would’ve worked or not. Would hv worked? 🤔 I was to afraid to find out, not to mention do all of that extra drilling new holes and making sure the measurements were correct. I’m stuck with bags of extra gold hinges I couldn’t return to the seller off eBay. Anyways, I know the difference between them now. Your video was so helpful! TFS! 🤝
So glad I found your easy to understand video. I am a 76 year old lady about to paint my kitchen cabinets and was worried about replacing the hinges. I have one question. What if the place you need to put a new screw has a stripped out hole already?
Good video on those hinge stile, but...... I have TV stand with two doors very similar to what your bathroom cabinet is and about same size but with no hinges, they are just setting in place with temp nail to hold the the doors in place, I'm tied of the nail in nail out.... My problem is, my doors go all the way to edge of cabinet on both sides and sets against a 1" wide 3/4" thick wood strip frame, I dont have that space you have around your doors where the hinges screw in.... I want 4 self closing hinges or some way to latch doors shut.... So how or what stile hinge will work? What kind of hinge would you use if your doors went to the edge of of your cabinet? Is there a hinge that will screw along the outer edge back toward wall and still close the door? I want 4 self closing hinges or some way to latch doors shut.... Thanks for any ideas that you can give.............
I replaced my hinges and they are three hole on the cabinet doors. I matched the new hinge holes to the original ones on the cabinet. How can realign them so they will close? Two cabinet doors are suppose to meet but not rub in the middle and they are crooked and are too close together. Am I going to have to take them off and make new holes? There is no screw or any thing to adjust them. My brother suggest I go back and get the ones you can adjust. Are they the self closing hinges? Thanks
I've been looking for self closing hinges but I'm now realizing that I likely already have them! Mine look very similar to yours, and when you do get the door close to closed, they do seem to finish closing... They are likely pretty old though, wondering if replacing them with new versions like you did would help improve their closing strength? Any suggestions for a self closing cupboard hinge that is MORE self closing? This type seem to work from about 30 degrees, but ideally would love something that will work when the door is at least 45 to 90 degrees open.
I reused my hinges bc in my area they cost $9 ea. I scrubbed the old paint covered hinges with Q-tips and Acetone .Readily cleaned off all the grit and old paint. It only took few minutes.
Thank you for this video. I was replacing the new hinges with face mount hinges and really didn’t know how it should go. But following your simple directions helped me to install the bathroom cabinet door without any problems.
Well done! In the past I’ve replaced literally hundreds of doors, mostly with the half overlay/ inset doors, on older face frame style cabinetry. Usually a big PITA! 🙄 Thumbs up! Stay safe and Healthy! 👍😁🇺🇸
Hey George, have you ever tried to clean/strip the pain off of hinges like these? I have seen some place the painted hinges is hot water but process looked fairly tedious.
@@EverydayHomeRepairs Hi 😄 Soaking them in vinegar, and basically wire brushing them, but like you said, a royal PITA! I’ve heard some that soak them in hot water with baking soda? Hello Scott, can you tell me where you got those hinges? The ones with the angle (45 degrees?). The Home depot one linked to, don't have that slight angle that fits doors cut to 45 degrees (like the ones in your video). Can't find those hinges anywhere. ..
My doors on my armoire are crooked. They have 3/4 partial wrap hinges. I took hinges off and put doors up to see how they would be straight. To make them straight, the left bottom of the left door has to shift 1/2 in. Inward and the right side bottom of the right door goes past the armoire 1/2 in. I am so confused. I measured the cabinet and cabinet and doors are the same size. Is there away to straighten them using the hinges. Thank you for any help!
My door stayed ajar a half inch so I did something wrong. At 3:29 you do not mention whether hinge is flush with wood or not. I have 2 doors that need to close together, 4 hinges. Hours later I can't figure it out.
great video, we have an old house with those exact doors and hinges. Question, do they make a hinge (or an add on piece) that would allow for soft close (vs just close)?
I’m replacing some hinges exactly like this. I have some cabinet doors that worked perfectly putting all the screws back in the same holes. I have other cabinets that didn’t work so well for. Some are rubbing at the opening. Some are now propped open and won’t close all the way. Can you give me some insight on what could be going on or how I can fix this?
Try removing the doors, remeasure when they will hang to not rub, mark the spot for the hinge and red rill a new hole if needed. If you want to patch the old hole buy wood filler putty in a small tub. It’s quick drying and fills holes and chips lightly sand repaint if needed and install.
I just subbed too. Thanks again.❤ Btw, what do you do if it’s already stripped? Also, do you absolutely need that same type of drill bit to install the screws?😊
Was looking for instructions, on an inset hinge, new install. I can't get these to sit flat to screw them on, especially in tight corners. The springs, preload these past the 180 degree point. I need 4 hands to stretch these open, push them flat, drill or mark holes and screw down
I wish I could upload a photo, if I can I don't see how. I've got new hinges that have a plastic insert and they're really difficult to open. I'm assuming this plastic piece needs to come out but I'm not sure how as it's really tightly in there. They're the same hinges you have, just with a plastic bit inside the hinge itself. Is that normal and will loosen up maybe once installed or do I remove them, if so how? Thanks so much for the video, hope my question makes sense.
I just bought new inset hinges. I did exactly what you did and now my doors are sagging and the double doors under the kitchen sink do not line up. Is there any way to adjust these type of hinges? When I tighten the screws on the facing, I literally watch the cabinet get pushed to where it doesn't fit properly. If I loosen the screw the cabinet goes back to where I placed it but then the hinge is loose on the facing aspect. I don't see any way to adjust. So frustrated because I already broke one of the self closing components due to "trying" to bend the hinge a bit. I also tried remounting the hinges. Got better results but not perfect. Thank you in advance.
I just replaced all of my hinges (24) and all went well - except one door. It will not fully close. It stays open about 1/2". What is my next step? Thanks!
Hi, can I replace this type of hinge with a embed type hinge for the kitchen cabinet doors? My doors only overlap the face frame by about 1/8”. I’m trying to make the doors soft close. Any installation tips would be appreciated. Thanks for posting your helpful videos.
Scott, I have self closing hinges in my kitchen cabinets that lost their vigor, and the cabinet doors stay open. Is there a way to fix the hinge so i'ts tight again and keep cabinet doors closed?
To help you troubleshoot this one we might need a bit more info. If you join our facebook group "Everyday Home Repairs Community" you can post pictures of your hinges and describe the issue. Then we will have more info to work with and get your problem solved. Thanks!
How do you know exactly where to put the new holes on the door so that it still aligns with existing holes on the face frame? It appears that you didn't push the hinge all the way up against the side of the door. At least that's what it looked like in the video.
I just aligned to where the old hinges were places. It was easy for me since I had a painted and non-painted area. I did push the hinges against the door but it might not have looked that way since the profile of the hinge and the profile of the doors didn't match perfectly.
I have old hinges. Both parts are on the outside door. I do not want these old school ones but I'm not sure if it is fine to buy the ones you just installed or if it will work the same.
The kitchen cabinets in my apartment uses these, and the bottom hinge pin fell off the other day.... is there a way to fix it or should i just buy a replacement?
I would just get a new one. Take one of the hinges off and then take a trip down to the large home improvement store. You should be able to find a match and the install as shown in the video is easy. Let me know if you have any follow up questions.
We updated our kitchen cabinet hinges with newer ones. When attaching to cabinets the holes didn't line up, they were overlapping where the gap should of been and when tightening the screws down, the bottom or top would drop or lift not allowing the doors to align. What did i do wrong???
Is there a reason the screws used to mount the hinge to the cabinet frame have a flat head while the screws used to mount the hinge to the cabinet door are longer and with a round head?
You could have them all the same if you prefer. The rounded heads go on the outside visible part of the hinge, I think because they are more decorative. The flat heads go on the app inside and will be flush with the surface of the hinge. It seems to be the standard design.
@@KB-qk7kn thank you! Just a beginner here. I guess it indeed just looks better. Now I feel like checking every cabinet door’s hinge I see to take a look at the screw choice.
Hello, we are replacing the old hinges. The new ones are the exact sizes. However, the door do not close. My husband want to put the old disgusting hinges back on. Please help me find a solution !!! or the right hinges!!!!. Thank you !!!
Will replacing old face mount hinges flex sagging kitchen cabinet doors? My granddaughter bought a 1987 vintage home and many of her kitchen cabinet door either don’t close all the way, they sag or just don’t align properly. It’s unfortunate that they are not adjustabe. I’d appreciate any advice you could offer. Thanks!
We are replacing these same type hinges because the old ones are rusty and have been painted over several times. We have installed all hinges on the uppers and several on the lower cabinets. We are down to 3 sets of doors and no matter what we do we cannot mount the door with hinge attached to the fronts of the cabinets. The hinges are sitting exactly where the old ones were but the hinge will not lay flat on the cabinet. We have tried every "trick" we have been told about and none have worked. Any tips for us?
Hmmmm, I think the best path is to join our Facebook Group facebook.com/groups/623172345205906 then you can post some pictures and ask the question. With pictures I am sure myself and/or the other 65,000 members could give some feedback. Thanks!
Super helpful video, man! Much appreciated. My question is this: where did you find those specific hinges that you installed? We went with a white countertop/black accents look, and we have almost the exact same hinges that you used to have on yours. We’d love to save ourselves a bunch of online shopping and just go get the ones you bought!
I went to Menards which is a big box home improvement store found throughout the Midwest. If you don’t have Menards you can try Home Depot or Lowe’s. Best of luck on the project!
Hi Mauna, are yours more like these "concealed" cabinet hinges? Check this video ruclips.net/video/ekf7mpMNDPU/видео.html I did on how to measure and select the correct hinges. Specifically this video is upgrading to soft close hinges which is a nice feature. Let me know if your hinges don't match the concealed hinges.
Question? can those face mount hinges be replaced with something else? I want to get away from that face mount type. What would you suggest? Thank you for great video.
Simple answer is yes. I would recommend a Euro style hinge. Make sure you buy the right size over lay for your cabinets. Lowes sells a hole drilling jig to make installation easier.
My cabinet doors when hung are anywhere from 1/2 inch to a couple inches apart. I’ve tried rotating the doors to make sure the right cabinet face is on the right cabinet. This has been extremely frustrating
Goddamn i spent maybe triple the money for doing it myself instead of buying a replacement for cheaper lol but the pride i feel everytime i open that missplaced door is priceless
How do I measure correctly hanging 2 doors I DIYED I have the same hinges except its self closing I'm stuck on how to measure where on my TV stand to hang them. Prob simple but I'm lost!
So, the hinges are self closing correct? What I would do is make the doors slightly wider than the opening, depending where you want to place the hinge. The beauty of these hinges is you have some room to play to.see where the doors look the best. That's why making the door wider than the opening is key ( I hope your doors are wider than the opening) Btw, I build custome furniture so I have some knowledge but I am not an expert. Please me know if this help. There is a video in RUclips that will help you visualize it, if I find it I will send you the title. God bless
In you tube his channel name is dusty guy and his video is " cabinet overlay hinges". Its an old video but it will help you visualize it. I hope this helps
@@ronnieves2398 I already made the doors they are larger than the opening. Just was confused. As the hinges don't sit flush unless the door is opened for me to measure so it makes it difficult to figure out being by myself

Try removing the doors, remeasure when they will hang to not rub, mark the spot for the hinge and red rill a new hole if needed. If you want to patch the old hole buy wood filler putty in a small tub. It’s quick drying and fills holes and chips lightly sand repaint if needed and install.
Great. Thank you
You’re welcome!
Best explanation
Thx!
Thank you so much! That was extremely helpful!
Thank you, bless❤ like it.
Very nicely done video.
Thank you, this was very helpful..
I just replaced all of my hinges (24) and all went well - except one door. It will not fully close. It stays open about 1/2". What is my next step? Thanks!
I'm having the same issue with some of mine...hopefully someone will answer!
Will that type hinge work on a 5/8" plywood door, or 3/4" plywood door?
Thanks for sharing!!!!
Happy to help!
Hi, can I replace this type of hinge with a embed type hinge for the kitchen cabinet doors? My doors only overlap the face frame by about 1/8”. I’m trying to make the doors soft close. Any installation tips would be appreciated.
Thanks for posting your helpful videos.
Same here. It's infuriating.
Thanks!
Self closing hinge barely moves prior to installing. Is that normal or is it defective?
What did i do wrong???
you put an existing door. how do you fit new doors with these hinges.how do you mark.
Is there a reason the screws used to mount the hinge to the cabinet frame have a flat head while the screws used to mount the hinge to the cabinet door are longer and with a round head?
yes
@@KB-qk7kn what is the reason ? Why not keep them all flat or round?
You could have them all the same if you prefer. The rounded heads go on the outside visible part of the hinge, I think because they are more decorative. The flat heads go on the app inside and will be flush with the surface of the hinge. It seems to be the standard design.
@@KB-qk7kn thank you! Just a beginner here. I guess it indeed just looks better. Now I feel like checking every cabinet door’s hinge I see to take a look at the screw choice.
Great idea to look at others. While there are standards, personal taste is also important.
Can I use that type of hinge on the inside so it doesn't show?
How and where can I buy those same exact hinges.
Hey, can you replace self closing hinges for the regular ones and what is the difference? Thanks!
Hello, we are replacing the old hinges. The new ones are the exact sizes. However, the door do not close. My husband want to put the old disgusting hinges back on. Please help me find a solution !!! or the right hinges!!!!. Thank you !!!
Just installed a half inch door but it wants to stay partially open and not tight against the frame. What did I do wrong?
How do you install the same hinges but installed inside the frame with 1/2 overlays
Thanks!
Thank you. I did not know how to express what my problem is with 1 of my kitchen doors! SAGGING is the word. Appreciate you.
William you find them in Amazon on line. I got mine from there
Home depot have them...same style but different sizes
I made sure I got the exact kind and my door doesnt close. Someone said I need to adjust the pin? What pin?
Hmmmm, when you close the door where are you seeing the interference?
How many inch did you drill?
What do you do when the holes on the cabinets strip out?
I cannot get the screws that hold the cupboard in place to tighten any more and they are not flush. Any suggestions?
I have the same problem
My kitchen cabinets have a side pocket to insert the door hinge what are they called and can I switch out for a different hinge
Is there a way to change this exact vanity drawer to a soft close drawer?
Are 30 degree bevel face mount cabinet hinges different? How do I know if my old hinges are 30 degree bevel type?
Seems the same hinges when you tight end the screws the door move towards the. Center of I loosen the screws the door goes back towards the hinges
if I am using a spring latch how do i install this kind of latch
With this hinge type what do I do if the cabinet door doesn’t close all the way?
Hi Cherie, can you locate where specifically the door is interfering with the face frame?
Question? can those face mount hinges be replaced with something else? I want to get away from that face mount type. What would you suggest? Thank you for great video.
Simple answer is yes. I would recommend a Euro style hinge. Make sure you buy the right size over lay for your cabinets. Lowes sells a hole drilling jig to make installation easier.
I tried to replace my hinges in all my kitchen now the doors dont completaly close , any help?
My cabinet doors when hung are anywhere from 1/2 inch to a couple inches apart. I’ve tried rotating the doors to make sure the right cabinet face is on the right cabinet. This has been extremely frustrating
I can not find them anywhere. What is the name of model number
Please help. The new hinges are identical to the original but they won't close smoothly. 😢
Just replaced face mount hinges on old doors now the doors hit the wood frame on the outer edge of cabinet.
What can I do?
Adhesive Bumper stops
What is semi wrap??
So I keep getting a gap on my door hinges why is that I keep getting that result
How do you replace the springs
Goddamn i spent maybe triple the money for doing it myself instead of buying a replacement for cheaper lol but the pride i feel everytime i open that missplaced door is priceless
😂
@@tiffanysmith3210 are using the hinges like the ones in the video?
@@ronnieves2398 yes except they say self closing but exactly the same
