no words can express how great Aoife's voice is and Noam just masters any sort of song put before him on any number of strings given. Sounds so perfect. Like the wind and a mountain steam.
That is a tricone National plectrum (long neck 4-string) guitar, circa 1929. He had talked about converting one to 5-string, like a regular banjo, but I guess couldn't bring himself to do it. I think what works nicely is that this instrument has more sustain than a typical percussive banjo, so he can slide around and the notes fade subtly without cutting off abruptly. She's playing a Martin 0-17 or 00-17. What an absolutely beautiful song.
Aoife has a beautiful lilting voice. I first heard her singing Blaze Foley's " Clay Pigeons " magnificently and this song is equally impressive. The name sounds very Irish, but then , we like to claim as many great singers as we can. Brilliant. Gerry Farry. 👍
I come back every month or so to watch and listen. Please, oh please, could the two of you put this on an album or release it as a single? Your version of Fish & Bird still gives me chills too.
Aiofe, I love your beautiful voice, playing and passion for music. There’s another song I’d love to hear you sing: The Water is Wide. If you take requests, this is mine. Thank you for the fantastic music! Jo
Subscribed. Thanks, Mr. Pikelny and Ms. O'Donovan. The soprano in my duo often sends me song ideas that one or the other of you have posted to YT. Thanks for giving us inspiration.
i don't know exactly what kind of instrument he's playing but wow it sounds awesome. this is one of the best and most feeling played songs i've heard in a while. lovely.
It's a banjo, just a very strange-looking, vintage one. When I saw him live with Stuart Duncan he explained how he saw some reviews that called it one of the worst playing banjos ever, or something along those lines, and he knew he had to have it.
Plectrum banjos were an answer to the jazz scene. the 5th string would always be out of key. so The plectrum and tenor banjo came into vogue for banjo and violin/mandolin players to get in on the action. The resonator was a form of amplification. His plectrum Im sure is tuned the same as his normal banjo, minus the drone string. An oddity for sure, but a real coolness factor.
Oct 2019 if anyone comes to this vid late as I have you may know that you can find both these fine artists often appearing on Live From Here. Google it

Very nicely said Gary.
Like a bird talking to the wind, this song performed by Aoife and Noam is a real moment of grace. Thanks a lot
Aoife O'Donovan, one of the best and more rewarding
companies on this quarantine. Thank you so much for that
This is such a classic! It should have a million views by now!
This is the most beautiful music I can recall. Amazing voice.

Absolutely beautiful! Thank you!
Your rendition is so sweet that you made chirping birds around you willing to join you

Why do you refer to his instrument as a guitar? Surely it's a banjo.
Rory Mannion It's a resonator tenor guitar.

Seen these two live before, and they are great.
That is one of the sweetest voices I have Ever heard.
Love how the birds start singing on cue.
You know sometimes when I play outside the house they turn up(the birds) and I swear they join in.
Geniale Version....danke aus Köln am Rhein. Manfred

Beautiful Lady, Beautiful soulful voice!!
Have to comment. That is exceptional counter-point (don't know what else to call it) playing on that instrument from Noam. Just magic.
I believe it’s a resonator plectrum banjo

How lovely!
The road may be rough and rocky. but acoustic music seems to be traversing it well these days.
Watched it again, have to comment again. This is fabulous stuff! Thanks for posting it.

Actually it's a plectrum guitar, not a banjo. It's a National tricone resonator model from the late 20s.

@jeeping_foodie Not banjo. Guitar. As above.
It has 4 strings though
Soooooperb.

This is great. Are you coming to the northeast? I'm in northern NJ but I might travel a bit to see the two of you.
agh you're coming to my town but i'll be out of the country
Tasteful and Tasty!
Hey Noam! Love the video and song! One question? Is the audio recorded separately?
Audio was recorded at the same time, but not straight to the camera. Then synced to the video. Had to do several takes due to the blustery wind!
As long as Noam sticks to the banjo, he can do no wrong.
This is awesome - another Welch & Rawlings quality, is there more of them?
Noam's lead work certainly has some Rawlings type licks.
Is this original?
Combine 2 people with weird first names and you get beautiful music. Got it.
Noam is not a weird name; it's a perfectly common Hebrew name, used much by modern Jews. I suspect her name is probably a non-weird Irish name.
It's an Irish form of Eva.@@danielboyarin90
I love her, but I don’t know how to say her name. Aoife??🤔
EEF-uh a common Irish name
How the new is Aoife name pronounced?!
EE-fuh
the 'rose-coloured glasses' filter. for a performance which needs none (;
Same arrangement as the one on the Wayfaring Strangers album...
Brooklyn never looked so good...
Too much noise in this side, but good music... From France.
The guy on the aluminum mandolin is good--The girl-- not a big fan
+iceaxe56 it's a banjo
+iceaxe56 you could have fooled me
+Matthew 1 Just know when someone can't sing and she fits the bill--like you are a big fan--liar
+Ernie Stedman And you are an authority
it's a national tricone plectrum guitar.
