    I watch this video at least once a month. Such a beautiful song and the way she sings is magic.

    This is brilliant, they picked up on the underlying roots/bluegrass flavors of the original and emphasized them.
    It is a great composition.

    I think perhaps the wonder of following Aoife O'Donovan is being privy to the evolution of such genius. She's never ceased to immerse herself in the company of the very best and the very best no doubt draw something extraordinary from the company of Aoife O'Donovan. A joy to witness....

      Spot on: she rarely puts a foot wrong with her choice of material and of who she collaborates with. Watching her grow as a songwriter, guitarist and (especially) vocalist is a total pleasure and a joy...

    I keep coming back to this cover! Partly because it's one of my favourite songs of Joanna's. But also because there is something absolutely magical about Aofie's voice and the guitar arrangement here.

    "I'm in love with the hook, upon which everyone hangs." Wow, this cover has me in sweet, joyful, mournful tears. This song and this cover are a gem for me.

      i'm curious what that line evokes in others? i love that line, too, and curious how folks are interpreting it as meaningful to them...

    • @rodriogq
      @rodriogq 4 года назад +1

      @@slithygogs i'm mostly curious to hear about that too! what's your take? to me the "hook" evokes the sense of suspension i experience when in love, that is, "hanging in a hook" meaning being in love. but it's funny cause then she'd be in love with being in love? i constantly think about that line haha

    • @slithygogs
      @slithygogs 4 года назад +1

      @@rodriogq aw. yeah. for me, i think of the hook being the person she's in love with, maybe someone who a lot of other people depend on. so in that line, maybe she's speaking of the pain/difficulty of loving someone who is really committed to a lot of other people. or, i also think of it being maybe a symbol for "God", or whatever word you want to put there for whatever is holding everything together. that symbol of what everyone depends on to feel ok, or like there is an order to things. not sure exactly, but all i know is that the line really strikes me and seems to make intuitive sense to me, if not logical sense.

    • @rodriogq
      @rodriogq 4 года назад +3

      @@slithygogs some say god is love, or the other way round. it hadn't occurred to me to think of the hook as a support (emotional or otherwise) for people, and it makes so much sense! isn't love divine? i do think so :)

    Usually I think stripped down covers remove a lot of what makes originals dynamic and interesting, but here the melody is so fucking incredible getting to focus on that and the lyrics utterly clearly is a genuine treat. Thanks for this!!

    Always happy to find another Aiofe video. She doesn't have the greatest voice as we typically think of a great voice, but her nuances just make whatever she sings into something you want to listen to. It's like another instrument in the band.

  • @matthirn7858
    @matthirn7858 6 лет назад +2

    Aoife is all about the subtleties of using her voice to emote the song. She almost always carries that emotion in her facial expressions and shares them with her collaborators. There is a deceptive ease in the way she does this. If you watch Chris, he is able to match her expression at the beginning of the song, but gets very focused on being paired to Aoife's nuances of tone and then he is immersed in performing, only to return her smile at the end. There is excellence throughout from this trio of gifted musicians. Julian's genius playing is beautifully nuanced here.

    Absolutely love this performance. Three of my favorite performers. I do wish my old ears could understand Aoife's lyrics: I love her tone and delivery, though she seems to swallow the consonants - I consistently cannot understand the words. Harmonies are spot on. Chris' singing and playing is tonally and dynamically perfect. Julian's guitar work, as usual, is magic.

    An extraordinary talent. The thing I get most is her delivery. I never get the feeling that she isn't singing directly to me.
    To me, when a vocalist becomes conscious of their instrument, they momentarily lose touch, because I can feel
    a waiver. She never waivers.

    Just heard this trio perform this song live at Tanglewood. It was ravishing-as it is here. All credit to Joanna Newsom for writing such a fine song, but this may be an instance where a cover sheds new light on a composition. Stripped of any pretension, O'Donovan, Eldridge and Lage lay out the depth and structure of the song for all to see and hear. Wonderful in the most literal sense-i.e. full of wonder.

    • @jennygoodwine2494
      @jennygoodwine2494 6 лет назад +1

      so far, i got that's she's on the 10th fret, and starts out on an E chord. lol

    • @mitchrussell7753
      @mitchrussell7753 6 лет назад

      It can be a little confusing. The song is done in F, so she's capoed at the 10th fret playing it like it's in G. Making it more confusing, she's tuned her guitar to Drop D, meaning she tuned the low E string down to D. The are G - Bm - C -D - Em, I'd have to watch it a couple more times to be sure of the order, but I'm pretty certain those are the chords used.
